At least he didn’t mention chickens!

To answer Staff’s question from last night. Yes, you can plant the onions now. I did mine about April 1st, and even had a snow afterwards. They don’t mind cold, or frost, at all. I think sets are the way to do rather than seeds, for sure. I have picked a few small ones already.

Funny that your planting season is so much later than ours, yet our last frost date is usually said to be May 15-18th, which is very close to yours. We won’t have that this year, but we will have night time temps around 40 next week. I am going to plant my Italian beans that you sent me after the next warm up.

Good morning, Barb and Maggie. Notice the tag in today’s post is “chickens”. Fern is rather put out.
We received our tomato plants on Wednesday, and we may plant them this weekend, although given this Spring’s slowness in warming up, we aren’t sure yet.

Howlers, you are right – we just noticed the Tag. Oopps!

Remember Peaches? MPM will get a kick out of this story. Peaches lives on a farm near us with a bunch of other chickens. This week Mrs. Schultz that owes the farm took some baby chicks into the school for show and tell. She gave Peaches a bath and took her in too. The kids loved her, because she likes to be held. Peaches will never have to worry about her old age at that farm!

Good morning, B&M, Fern, OH and all! Bucko is wired this a.m. and yelling to beat the band! We aren’t sure if he likes OFA’s post or not. Mom has green onions already and lots of ‘mater blooms. Looks like the bell pepper is about to bloom, too.

Happy belated, belated birthday, Maggie! Lets just consider this your birthday week.

Mom is having a tough week. Dad had chemo this week (that went fine) but Mom always takes off work to go with him. Then last night, we had the same problem ML had the other day. Plumbing back-up GAH! This is the kind of stuff Dad always handled and Mom is going nuts. So now, waiting for plumber to come work his magic then run into work. Of course, Dad is giving Mom grief about feeling bad about missing more work. Mom can’t help that. She has worked so many years she feels awful for missing (not for missing to take Dad to Dr, but for other stuff right now.)

BooBear, please sit on your mom and knead all the guilt right out of her. Purr a soft tune. She will release all of that stress and then she can concentrate on you you you!

Barb, how do you give a chicken a bath? We have not tried that!! The chicken on this here farm who sounds like Peaches is Peg, the Ameraucana who lays green eggs. Now there is a chickie who loves being held. Of course, Fern loves being held too. Heck, we think all them chickies get far more attention than us us us.

  15. Barb & Maggie
    9:48 am on May 9th, 2014

Howlers, I imagine you either use a mild people shampoo or dog shampoo. I know people who are showing poultry will bath them, but we never did. If they are allowed outside then they will naturally dust bath, which is enough to keep them clean. Peaches probably needed her little feet washed since she walks around a chicken coop and yard.

If chicks are hand raised and held when they are little they imprint on people and never forget.

According to Wikipedia, “squash” (cucurbita–from the Latin for gourd) is from “askutasquash” meaning “a green thing eaten raw” from the Narragansett language (also known as Massachusett Language, an Algonquain language of the Algic language family). What fun!

Of course there is also the beverage “squash” and the sport. The verb “squash” is derived from Latin “quassare” meaning to shatter.

    I’ll stop now.

Must be quite messy if Admin and Spence are running around with their heads cut off.

B&M and O’Howlers, I would love to hold baby chicks, Peaches, peg, and Fern.
I do believe I was meant to live on a farm.

BooBear, I do think the Howlers have given excellent advice. Thinking of your mom and pop, and hoping you get to sit on your mom’s nice warm lap.

Boobear, Tell your mom she has nothing to feel guilty about, absolutely nothing! List your priorities, and I bet the job isn’t in the top 3!

Howlers, I think you may want to hold off for a week on the tomatoes and peppers, too. We are going to wait till at least the 20th. What varieties did you do this year? We are trying one new one called Marianna’s Peace. If you Google it, there is an interesting story.

We still laugh when Barb’s brother, who is an extreme foodie thought it was really funny when he overheard a woman at the farmer’s market asking who kind of tomatoes the vendor had. He asked his wife “Who would ask that?” And she replied “Your sister for one”. I explained to him that there are hundreds of varieties and they all taste different.

    Thank you Bee.

Bee, you and Staff will appreciate this – twice this week we have seen a pair of Baltimore Orioles in the yard. A male earlier in the week, and the female was at the feeder today. The neighbors have a lot of trees in their backyard, so we think they may be nesting there. We have 4 trees in our yard, but the two evergreens are a little small to attract nesting birds just yet.

Rain is gone and now it is sunny and beautiful. Off soon to buy hanging ferns for the front porch and some more alyssum plants. Also offered to work 3-4 hours this afternoon.

  39. B.Stover
    12:34 pm on May 9th, 2014

Rose: The Northern “Baltimore” Oriole is smaller than the Robin. (Oriole 7 – 8 inches; Robin 9 – 11 inches.) The male Oriole has more orange on breast and bottom and even on the wings. His beak is black as is his head. The Robin is a dark gray on top and head, and a duller orange on breast. His beak is yellow and he has a circle of white around his eyes.

HOH: There is also “wash” pronounced “warsh.” And there is the opposite: when the “r” is not pronounced, as in “haaad” instead of “hard.” There is something called the “rhotic” dialect referring to the “r” being “hard” (pronounced). That doesn’t answer the question of adding an “r” though. It may be a dialect brought over from England and Scotland but I don’t really know.

And for Dawson from a couple of days back, water is definitely my drink of choice, like Chet. Although I understand there was a past preference in this house for martinis, shaken not stirred or something like that. It was another grand day here. Got all the business done early in the day so I stopped by a friend’s gallery to say hello. They didn’t know I was in town, so it was a fun surprise. While I was there, the door opened and another mutual friend stopped in, so more hugs were handed out. Then the owners adult son and daughter showed up unexpectedly. More hugs and laughter. Then yet another mutual friend stopped in. It was just great.

I am wondering if maybe, just maybe – if there was a chorus of Plunder voices requesting a picture, maybe dear Nicki would possibly aquiese….
