Good morning all. We are doing some yard work before possible afternoon rain. Organic fertilizer being put down.

ML, If you have to call someone out, a Handyman might be able to do what you need and not charge as much per hour. In our area at least, plumbers have a high per-hour service call charge. Eric, our go to Handyman would know how to use a drain snake.

We too are wondering about Wolfie and his house guests.

Today may be “moving Monday ” for us. Gramp is scheduled to go to rehab today if all bloodwork of the morning looks good.

So, today will be chaotic. Hopefully when he is settled in there with things to do, and people to talk to, he will stop calling here at the crack of dawn every day, and then saying” oh, did I wake you up?”

Best wishes for a successful Moving Monday for Gramps and T&G’s folks, and for Callie.
Also wishing for an affordable Maintenance Monday for Macy’s bunch.

    Good Morning!

We have never used Angie’s List but have wondered about it.
    Do they charge for it?
Macy’s Mom, I hope a plumber can get everything fixed soon for a reasonable price. You do not need extra problems like this right now.

    Cherokee and pal…cute photo yesterday.

I hope Callie can visit gramps when he gets settled in rehab.

Siber, I think the way it works is that the service provider pays to be listed on Angie’s List. You, as the consumer, do not pay.

Barb just finished spreading the organic fertilizer on the front lawn. The ingredients included “feather meal” and composted poultry manure. It did not smell great! We here have not heard of feather meal. Yuck.

Nothing better than a Manure Monday! Now we are ready for the rain.

Garden report: Spinach, lettuce, kale, beets, onions and snow peas are all up.

  16. Tupper and Gilly
    1:13 pm on April 21st, 2014

Siber – actually contractors cannot pay to be on Angie’s list – they can only be there if they are recommended or trashed by a consumer. So you can pick your contractor by the number of good reviews they have or avoid the ones with bad reviews.

Diane – a friend’s mother had a four hour phone deal with IRS “customer service” the other day. You have our sympathies.

It is now definite. Gramp is moving to rehab today. He is kind of scared. He is just now realizing just how sick he was and what a close call he had. So he is a little fearful about being ready for less medical care.
We are sure he will be ok – this rehab is very good with PT and nursing care. Plus we will be there to make sure he gets the best care possible. He just has NO strength right now, but we know rehab will be just the ticket to get him back on his feet.

  17. Tupper and Gilly
    1:18 pm on April 21st, 2014

Ps – we forgot to say that yes, you do have to pay to access Angie’s list, but joining gives you many benefits, and discounts on many contractors services.

Not sure about the membership fee – different fee in different areas.

    Thanks T&G.

I am sure rehab will get gramps feeling much stronger.

Wose, you seem perkier already. Mr. Carrot is helping.

Now here’s what you need to do. Lie on your stomach with your front legs, er, arms, stretched out in front. Place Mr. Carrot horizontally over your arms and gently clamp your teeth on him. Then alternately pick up a front paw so you rock gently from side to side. Mommy says I look like a Kat when I do the paw thing. Do this for about 10 minutes and you will feel wonderful.

OK, T & G, We having received confusing info, because a painter we know told us he dropped Angie’s List, as it was costing him over $200.00 per month to be on it. Ummmm.

Now, Care that you can access for babysitters or dog sitters, etc, that you pay a service charge for access to information.

Barb, This sounds as if something fishy could be going on with Angie’s List.

  26. Barb & Maggie
    3:51 pm on April 21st, 2014

We saw that picture of Jace too, He looks very cute and happy.

Siber, IMO, I would not use Angie’s List, but that is just me. Personally, I would look to referrals from people I know, or call local businesses (i.e. my small town paint store).
Angie’s List SAYS that contractors don’t pay, but in reality they get 70% of their revenues from contractor advertising. Evidently if you are an advertiser they don’t publish a negative revue – they just put it is an A for positive and a B for negative. At least that is what we have read. Contractors pay for advertising in addition to their “free listing” and it will be about a minimum of $1,000 per year. One of the guys who gave us a wallpapering quote said his company dropped it due to the advertising expense. Consumers pay about $15-$20 per month to be members, but I hear that it set up as an auto charge and is hard to get stopped. In other words, it is not really what you see advertised on T.V.

  27. Siber-H
    4:19 pm on April 21st, 2014

Barb, Thank you very much. I am glad we had this discussion about Angie’s List because I have been curious. I never do business with anyone that wants to put an automatic charge on my credit card every month because it is always hard to get it stopped.
Bah, I will stay away from Angie’s List. Angie is probably really a fat, bald, dude that smokes a cigar.

I looked into joining Angies list. They wanted us to sign up for a set fee per month. We declined. They had out email addy and peppered us with emails about joining. Finally had to block them. Very annoying

    5:04 pm on April 21st, 2014

Well, thank you all for the very entertaining discussion of Angie’s list. In the meantime, I called a guy my brother-in-law used, he came out, snaked the line, looked at my leaky faucets, and told me how to fix my leaky toilet tank with aluminum foil, all for a tidy $125. I will probably have him back out for the faucets. ta-da and I got the radiologist to resubmit the claim to the correct insurance this time, paid a bill for two months, and straightened out the bank account. Then I took apart my bedroom and removed a large quantity of dog hair before running out of steam. At least the area by my side of the bed is Belle free and even MOPPED. Alert the media!

    5:07 pm on April 21st, 2014

When Angies list started it was a good idea but we think someone got greedy. At the beginning it cost $25 a year. Mom cancelled when they called her for reviews of work she’d already reviewed. As Staff said, very annoying.

And ML – Roto-Rooter has done good jobs for us more than once, for a reasonable price.

What a cutie baby Jace is. Thanks for the post.

Wose – rock Mr. Carrot. Believe me, the cat thing with the front paws really does work. I do it all the time!

Macy’s Mom!!! Good for you!!! (I also mopped, but only one room) I’m assuming it’s you despite the post saying it was from Macy.) this week is shaping up well, no?
T and G–thanks for your moral support and good news about Gramps (even if he’s temporarily uneasy about needing less care). Perhaps you can sit on him–that should be quite comforting for anyone who doesn’t have a Mr. Carrot to hand.

Oh my – we do love the Wedgwood egg. Hobbit, if we ask really nicely, would you send it to us, please. We understand that LouLou has access to a credit card….

ML – you did so well today, we are very proud of you and happy for your success. And we also learned all about Angie’s List – we don’t belong, but we had friends that used it many years ago, and sang its praises to the moon. Sounds like it is less praiseworthy now. sorry about that

We are (no so patiently) waiting for Zeusikov too! Congrats again, Howlers.

Now – for our day. Remember when we said Gramp was definitely moving today? We lied. Or the hospital did. Or the insurance company. Or the rehab center. Somebody lied.
Mama sat at the hospital ALL DAY long waiting for the transport to take Gramp. She kept asking about it, only to be told 1 o’clock. Then 3, then 4, then 4:30. At that point Gramp was so exhausted and stressed, she told the nurse he wasn’t going to move today. At 4:45, the nurse came in and said that Gramp’s very expensive and comprehensive health insurance denied coverage for a rehab facility since he could “walk 100 steps”. WHAT????? He can maybe shuffle 100 steps, holding onto a handrail and a therapist. But he can’t get out of bed alone, and he really needs to build his strength back up.
Mama spent the next half hour on the phone with the insurance people. Seems there WAS a prior authorization in place for yesterday, but the hospital didn’t move him because of the holiday. So now the insurance was denying him, since they didn’t think he needed more care.
    Guess what?
Gramp will be moved to the rehab place tomorrow.
And now we have to go put our Pink Bulldozer in park, before it rolls over any innocent bystanders.

Barb says she is going to work tomorrow to rest. Today she had the kids for 6+ hours. Hour and a half of homework (from last Thursday), trip to pick up Jack from a play date, hour at the library, and five meals/snack while they were here. Barb is whooped!

Now, relaxing with a glass of red wine, grilling bacon wrapped scallops, baked potatoes and baked onions. Chives from the garden to top the potato with sour cream. Yum, plus the quiet is wonderful.

Zeus, hope you get to your new pack soon, they will love you and care for you. We know this because our mom met your mom so she told us so. Amalia, you tell those insurance people!

Rio, tell your friend that her knee is no different from the injuries that I encounter on the ski slope. I am a certified outdoor first responder. What is needed is RICE. Rest, ice, compress, and elevate. Vapor Rob won’t do any harm but it won’t do any good either. Clears the sinuses though.

Swelling needs to be taken care of immediately or it takes on a life of its own. Believe me I have seen this and dealt with it for many years.

Rio, I have been reminded that I need to ice my knee also. About a week ago I took it in to the guy Mr.Staff saw when he broke his kneecap last (2013) January. He gave me a cortisone shot and it feels so good I forget to ice it. He said to ice it in the evening for 2 months. TWO MONTHS! I keep forgetting because it feels so good. I am remembering about every other day. Does this mean I have to do it for 4 months?

Off to ice for 20 minutes. Nighty noodle

Tupper and Gilly..so glad Gramp is getting moved today. Everyone needs an Amalia on their side.

Both McKey and Robert came up Easter weekend, or part of it, and it was much appreciated. Cousins got together for a bonfire down by the river at night (I slept thru that) but it was successful.

ALso James and Will (Martha’s sons) made a wonderful brunch after Church since Martha had strep throat (better now). I got to sit with all her children in Church as she won’t do an Easter Egg hunt for them if they don’t go. I love my family and I am so lucky to have them. Good Spring to all of you.
