Good morning, everyone! Welcome, Daisy Belle as a friend of Chet. Mmm, Opening Ceremony…not the best, not the worst. Colorful and lively.
Relax and get as healthy as possible to all, especially those in need.
Have a stressless Saturday (if that is possible).

Good morning all. We agree, Daisy is very cute.

Barb is going out later. Lyla has some sort of church thing that she wants Mimi Barb to attend. If it isn’t snowing yet she may run to Fresh Market for some Saturday specials.

We thought the opening ceremonies were pretty good. Wonder if someone lost their job when the 5th snowflake did not morph into a ring?

Good morning all. We dozed off during the opening ceremonies, so I guess we missed the good parts.

    Greetings!

I am login’ all this Olympics talk. Since I have personally boycotted the Olympics, it is fun to hear your opinions.

My, what a green thumb you have, Sharon!!!

Daisy Belle looks a little like Sammie, but ther is only ONE Princess Sammie!!! (I still really love the picture so Sammie and her girl running. Sammie had her college girl sweater on, and was running like the wind!). Sammie, how are your girl and boy?

Missing the Pixiie. Hope she is safe and gets home soon.

    Thinking about:
    Melanie
    BooBear, Karen, and Truman
    Dima
    The Royal Mum
All the rest under the quilt or peeking from a corner of the quilt.

Tonight, the Prof and I will have our own Beatles celebration by watching A Hard Day’s Night, Oscar winner for best screenplay.

    Enjoy!

AJ posted info on Facebook regarding the Iditarod. Here is the first part:

“As of today, we are still planning on having an acceptable trail starting in Willow and going over the Alaska Range to Nome. We do have trail concerns from the top of Rainy Pass to Nikolai. Because of these concerns, a contingency plan will be used if the Alaska Range conditions are not acceptable. On February 17, a decision will be made whether the Restart will be in Willow or Fairbanks. The alternate route would start in Fairbanks and travel as listed below. If the alternate route is used, the Ceremonial Start will be held in Anchorage on Saturday, March 1 at 10:00AM, and the Restart will be on Monday, March 3 (time to be announced) in Fairbanks.”

    Hello All,

Just returned late last night from an excellent run around Willow. The trails are hard and fast and require constant care with the team but we’re out and running again.

So, that’s the good news. The informational news for those of you who are planning on coming up here this year is that Iditarod sent us an email last night regarding POTENTIAL changes to the race.

They are considering moving the race to Fairbanks due to extremely low snow conditions over the Alaska range. This area is the most technical section of the race and has the potential to be dangerous even in the best years.

The race committee will make a decision by the 17th of this month. So, do a snow dance because the alternative trail that I’ve included a description of isn’t quite the Iditarod that the drivers enjoy.

Thank you all again for your support. I think of you all often. There was one problem however before I forget to mention it. The Twix bars required sampling before they went in the drop bags. Unfortunately the box did not contain enough samples and so now I’ve got to go to the store for more.

    See you on the trail…

    AJ

    Race Route Information

As of today, we are still planning on having an acceptable trail starting in Willow and going over the Alaska Range to Nome. If the alternate route is used, the Ceremonial Start will be held in Anchorage on Saturday, March 1 at 10:00AM, and the Restart will be on Monday, March 3 (time to be announced) in Fairbanks. You will be able to fully re-supply in Nenana at the checkpoint, however, straw and Heet will not be provided there. You can have unlimited help while at Nenana except for feeding and putting on booties.

As you know, Food Drops are scheduled for next week. Those bags identified to go to Ruby and beyond, on the regular 2014 Route, will be sent out immediately as would normally happen. Those bags identified for Skwentna, Rainy Pass, Rohn, Nikolai, McGrath, Takotna, Ophir, and Cripple will be held in refrigerated containers until the final route decision is made. Mileage information and food bag distributions for the alternate route are listed here:

Fairbanks – 50 miles to Nenana

Nenana – 65 miles to Manley No Food Drop in Nenana, no straw and Heet provided

Manley – 75 miles to Tanana Skwentna bags to Manley

Tanana – 120 miles to Ruby Takotna bags to Tanana

Ruby – 50 miles to Galena Ruby bags no change

Kaltag – 60 miles to Eagle Island Kaltag bags no change PLUS Rohn bags

Eagle Island – 62 miles to Grayling Nikolai AND Cripple bags to Eagle Island

Grayling – 18 miles to Anvik Rainy Pass AND Ophir bags to Grayling

Anvik – 18 miles back to Grayling No Food Drop in Anvik, straw and Heet provided

Grayling – 62 miles to Eagle Island Same bags as above

Eagle Island – 60 miles to Kaltag Same bags as above

Kaltag – 85 miles to Unalakleet Same bags as above

Unalakleet – 40 miles to Shaktoolik Unalakleet bags no change

Shaktoolik – 50 miles to Koyuk Shaktoolik bags no change

Koyuk – 48 miles to Elim Koyuk bags no change

Elim – 28 miles to Golovin (no food drop) Elim bags no change

White Mountain – 55 miles to Safety White Mountain bags no change

Safety – 22 miles to Nome Safety and Nome bags no change

Should the alternate route be used, ITC will deliver (1) one additional 50 pound food drop bag to any checkpoint after Nenana and before Unalakleet. You have the option to deliver this bag during next week’s food drops or wait until after the Route decision is made. Updated information will be distributed to you on a regular basis.

The Coton de Tulear is indeed the national dog of Madagascar, but there are really 2 branches of the Coton family: the Malagasy Coton and the Euro Coton. Daisy Belle is a Euro Coton. They are a bit smaller and tend to have less of the possible tri-colors. And yes, Daisy is very smart (but not as crime savvy as Chet).

Bonus joke from Daisy: “how can you tell if a Coton is French or Malagasy? The French ones are a little more ‘oui’ ! “. Woof! That’s a good one, Daisy!

We will all hope for the best in terms of snow for the trails. Right now snow is in the forecast the 13th, 14th, 15th but I don’t know how much and weather forecasts often change and are wrong.

If A.J. draws an early start number, it is conceivable that we could drive up Sunday, stay the night doubling up in hotel rooms, watch A.J. take off and drive back to Anchorage Monday. We are gaining daylight everyday so that is in our favor. It is a long drive but a pretty one and I usually see Mt. McKinley looming in the sky so that would be neat. I can check with my nephew about borrowing another vehicle and I can drive 3-4 people in my car.

I would be glad to try and reserve other rooms using my Alaska resident rate if that is allowed. Yep, Dawson, we are watching everything you do. By the way, I like that towel in your bathroom.

Even though Mom and Dad aren’t getting to go North to Alaska for the big race, we really hope that there is lots of snow and the restart will be in Willow! Can’t imagine that they will change it unless absolutely necessary.

Mom got a really cool pot holder in the mail today too!!! Thank you, Staff! Mom loves it.

Luna, is Little in the starting line up and has she been sponsored?

  92. Alice M. Johnson

Staff is a poodled up. She has her return flight leaving Anchorage at 12:35 a.m. on Monday/night Tuesday morning and is all worrit if she goes up to Fairbanks she will not get back in time for her flight. She needs a lot of rest you know although she often takes naps in cars. Yikes… What are you guys thinking about. I suppose I can book and then cancel if I decide not to go as well as if the start stays in Willow…

    Pondering…

Staff made reservations. She decided it would be better to make them and then cancel than to not make them and be sorry. 99$ one night, March 2nd, two queens. Must be cancelled by Feb 27 or she will be charged….Whew!

She is also a little afraid of buying new technology for SiberH…wheeze!…I think a bunch of paw-written notes from us to SiberH and his Maw begging for him to come back would do the trick…snorkel!

Boy, pugs, one good snuffle and that lovely flower would have been confetti!

Staff, you will know by the 17th if Fairbanks is involved, plenty of time to cancel. I am really torn about this whole situation. On the one paw, it would be better for the dogs to start at Willow. On the other paw, I have never been to Fairbanks, heh, I’ve never been to Alaska. On the other paw, I don’t like mountain roads. On the other paw it would be an adventure, on the other paw…wait I think I am out of paws.

BooBear: Orion has been a steady and solid team member for years. Elim too. They keep on plundering on.

It will be nice to know who is on the team. That will come when the v e t checks have been completed.

Tony Angelo’s Siberian Huskies have been withdrawn from the Yukon Quest. He pushed the emergency button for help before he reached Dawson City, thereby disqualifying himself. Dogs and musher are fine.
Hank DuBruin’s team of Huskies is still in it.
The race for first is still between Brent Sass who is only a few miles ahead of Allen Moore and it has been like that the whole race with Hugh Neff 10 or so miles behind them. The end is near and may be a squeaker!

Diane, Rio’s friend does an intricate paper technique called quilling. You can look it up on Google. It dates back to the Middle Ages. Each piece of paper is cut and is individually curled. Very labor intensive.

Rio, is your friend left handed?

  127. Luna
    11:41 pm on February 8th, 2014

BooBear: I have heard it straight from the musher’s mouth that Jem or Marco are on the A team so far this year. Jem’s nose gets a lot of recognition, but the rest of him goes largely unnoticed. Marco is from the fruit of Whitey-Lance’s looms.
