Hmmm–I guess I’m first today, hoping for any news…?
Alice M. Johnson, I left a msg for you on yesterday’s.
Storyteller, Melanie, everyone with colds, teeth issues, anything–thinking of y’all as I go to meditate.
8:34 am on January 21st, 2014
Ice fishing?
Good morning all.
8:49 am on January 21st, 2014
Good morning, everyone! Belle Star, Lucy checked in here this a.m. She was wiggling because she thought if someone saw sparkles on the crash cart, they’d clean it to make it work, a no go in disguises. She slept in the Storyteller’s room to guard him. Today she will also keep an eye out for Melanie and hopes no one notices “Out of Order” crash carts all over the place. Here it is as warm as it is getting today š Temp will be 20 degrees colder than yesterday, at least.
All who are hospitalized, ill, stresses, worried or otherwise not tip top, this Tuesday is your special day…make it so.
9:19 am on January 21st, 2014
HOH: How is it that sparkles aren’t a good disguise? This is baffling! I used my most stealthy, low key, not-to-be-noticed crash cart colored sparkles.
It was a full room last night with the Storyteller. It was a lot of my Four-legged telling the Storyteller in through the snout (one, two), out through the mouth (three, four). He is a good patient.
That Damn Pixie is about ready to board her plane. Have a good week all youse.
9:31 am on January 21st, 2014
Good morning all. Thinking about Leonard and Melanie this morning. Hope all goes smoothly for both of them. Maybe they can visit in the hospital.
Diane, I think this the right procedure for donating. First you can put it on the blog if you want, but more importantly, send an email to Staff, who put her email address on the blog a day or two ago. it is ndrew….
Then you mail a check for whatever amount to Rebecca at Snowhook Kennels. Is it OK to post their address on the blog? Someone let me know.
If Spence really is fishing, have fun.
Bitter cold here, so Barb is going to Fresh Market to buy her fish this morning. Salmon is the choice of the day.
9:32 am on January 21st, 2014
Belle starr–I don’t understand about sparkles and the [Damn] Pixie. when you have a mment, will you clarify? Thanks.
9:49 am on January 21st, 2014
D: Belle Starr is a spoiled little 4 legger who loves baby animals and wants them ALL and loves sparkles/glitter and is sure it will help any occasion. The Damn Pixie is another for her 2 legger (Rebecca). (whispering) Shhh, a blog alter ego, of course. Belle Starr only. The pixie/Rebecca/Best Damned Musher’s Wife is a real, overworked person.
9:59 am on January 21st, 2014
Barb & Margie–Thank you, I will try to find Staff info.
10:05 am on January 21st, 2014
Howdy! It is snowing today, and Mom drove all the way to work!!!! Gah!!!
Diane, thank you for wanting to help Snowhook. Here is their webpage. It has their address, as well as on online option to contribute. That’s how Mom does it.
http://snowhookkennel.blogspot.com/
And Belly Starr is very real. Mom will be meeting her when she goes Way Up North to Alaska.
10:11 am on January 21st, 2014
Hi Diane, I don’t know what the standard operating procedures are for putting personal addresses on the blog, but what I can tell you is that if you GOOGLE Snowhook Kennel, their address can be found there. And a bunch of other cool stuff. The Snowhook website accepts PayPal payments as well. (If I am not mistaken).
10:16 am on January 21st, 2014
HOH, I am a spoiled little two-legged who loves baby animals and wants them all. I love anything that sparkles and glitters too. That is why belle Starr and I are VBFF and twins!
10:18 am on January 21st, 2014
Belle Starr, I hope I did you proud with the prayer last night. I feel bad because I was very late in posting. Even Beau seemed mad at me.
10:20 am on January 21st, 2014
Wose–Thanks. Does a fascination with shiny objects count as sparkles and glitter? And what about things that glow in the dark (because anything, no matter how cool, just gets better if it glows in the dark–except possibly plutonium and stuff like that).
10:20 am on January 21st, 2014
…there should be a question mark at the end of that last.
10:24 am on January 21st, 2014
Diane: No problem. Why shiny objects certainly do count as sparkles and glitter in my book. I can’t speak for Belle, but I love shiny objects like diamonds, rubies, sapphires…. : ). Belle and I both like that glittery Pixie dust too. It make anything look extra special.
10:26 am on January 21st, 2014
Hey, Snowhook Kennels is celebrating their 10th year! I think that calls for something extra shiny, and extra glittery!!!
There is a very handsome FOC named Baxter who looks a lot like someone else on this here blog.
10:28 am on January 21st, 2014
And finally, IT IS SNOWING!!!!!! Yippee! We are expected to get 3-6″. In and out of the quilt today.

One more finally…..
NATTIE, will you be styling KINKY BOOTS at the Iditarod ?

11:14 am on January 21st, 2014
We are so worried about Melanie and T&G’s mum having to travel in this snow!
11:15 am on January 21st, 2014
Wose: Your prayer last night was wonderful. Beau was probably grumpy because Rio snorted and sneezed all over his bible.
Diane: What is glow in the dark? It doesn’t matter—I must have it. I have two mamas. One is Luna, she is my four-legged. Luna is the matriarch of the kennel. Ain’t no one mess with mama. SnowBella is my two-legged mama. She likes sparkles as well, but usually says no to me getting a baby aminal of my very own. I took to calling her the Damn Pixie who Stole My Sparkles recently. My inventory is low. I’m convinced she decided to use it as fairy dust once she chopped all her hair off and got the nickname of Pixie. She can not be trusted. Pancho and Lefty confessed to taking my sparkles for a disguise, but my money is still on her. Is my two-legged mama overworked? I have no idea. I do know she is on the road a lot these days whatever that means and the Giant misses her a lot.
11:23 am on January 21st, 2014
Wose: Is ten more than two?
11:30 am on January 21st, 2014
Isn’t Spence once again under a blizzard warning?
Melanie and the Storyteller and Amalia, Thinking of you guys today and praying for your good health and safe travels.
Wose, We hope you feel better soon and thank you for the lovely prayer last night.
I am happy for you getting SNOW! No snow here, nada, nothing, gah.
11:44 am on January 21st, 2014
I think Belle Starr was too busy sparkling crash carts yesterday to notice the photo of the baby donkey–or else it is the first baby animal she doesn’t want.
I wonder if Snowhook dogs ever try to blur out to a village to see their two-legged mama or if Luna forbids it.
Off to MRI. 4th times a charm (I hope). Stillness awaits–gah
12:14 pm on January 21st, 2014
Greetings all.
Currently at the hospital. The Storyteller’s room is directly over the surgical area where Melanie is, so we are taking that as a good sign.
Melanie’s biopsy was postponed for over two hours this morning while test results were awaited. She finally went in around 11:15. I will go back down to check on her around 1.
The Storyteller looks much more like himself today, but still has a painful, wracking cough. Of course, he has charmed all the nurses and is getting special attention and lots if checking in. No doctor yet today, but he has had another X-ray and more blood tests.
No snow here yet, but we only live about 3 miles from the hospital, so no worries for us. We are more worried about Melanie getting home. Martha will be picking her up, and she has lots of experience driving in rotten weather.
We will update you all after we check on Melanie.

This made me laugh over and over. Duluth Minnesota January 1 2014. It is -13 with a wind chill hovering about -30 or lower. What should we do? Well, I think we should go surfing.
http://gearjunkie.com/lake-superior-surfing-minnesota
Crashing waves. Ice covered rocky beach. Thundering surf. Wind howling. Icicles on the helmets. Bare feet in the snow and the water at 38 degrees feels warm? Sounds like surfing weather to me.
Love the haunting music.
12:42 pm on January 21st, 2014
Oh my dawg! Those folks are just nuts!
12:42 pm on January 21st, 2014
Do NOT like the elevator but a crash cart on the stairs (with a few left over sparkles) looks suspicious. The Storyteller looks almost like himself today. Poor Melanie, She is in a room with a big tube thing that sounds like it is being hit with a stick. I don’t like it one bit but for Melanie I’ll stay close. Back to work.
12:43 pm on January 21st, 2014
Hey DianeC. My SDD is ncdrewatgmaildotcom. Just write it differently from the way I spelled it. OK? I will tell you all the secrets about that sparkle stealing pixie and how to help snowhook and any other little thing you want to know. heh heh heh.

***Plunder Booty Fund Report***
Right now we are at 925.00 with a 40.00 match waiting to be matched. If it gets matched we will be at 1005.00. WoooHooo
Yesterday we managed to match 90.00 dollars so that was wonderful. Remember folks the goal is 1500 of the 2000 booties that Snowhook uses each season.
We also would like to send some moola up to Snowhook to help keep the Giant nourished so don’t forget Feed the Giant and the Checkpoint fund.
We are almost to February and the race STARTS IN FEBRUARY THIS YEAR!!!!! Not a lot of time left guys, gals and all the furry feathered ones.

Just to let youse know…we are out of town for a couple of days…will check in as often as we can.
Melanie must be very comforted to have the Storyteller close by. He certainly went to a lot of trouble to be there for her.

******HOSPITAL REPORT*******
Melanie is out of surgery and (kinda) awake. She says everyone was very kind. And she was going back to sleep. I will go back downstairs at 2 to see how she is.
The Storyteller had lunch and went for a walk. The coughing sounds very scary, but resp therapist is coming in a bit to do a treatment.
Whew. Glad there is an elevator between upper floors and surgery area.

This is to get your blood pumping for the Iditarod.

I believe AJ is the last one (the 4th) to slide down the steps on his belly. for those of you new to the Iditarod the step are the hilly part with the sharp left-hand turn at the bottom.

Phew, that was close! Was famished so followed my nose to the cafeteria. Several people wondered why the crash cart was there. Did get away with 2 really delish sandwiches. Back to duty, hopefully heading home soon.

Will show Lucy the poodle Iditaroder when she gets home, after all, she is a cousin. MPM: Wow, the falls are impressive even in a semi frozen state. Lots of neat things to watch today. Hey, Diane, how did Conan’s v e t visit go and how are the little guy’s teeth?

Staff, I loved the Iditarod poodles, plus I just enjoy looking at Standard Poodles. Thank you.
3:16 pm on January 21st, 2014
What year was it that the poodles ran? Did they end up going the next year too?
3:28 pm on January 21st, 2014
The Niagara Falls cam is way cool.
Thanks Mollypop’s Mom
Barb, The Poodles only raced one year and it was a long time ago, but I don’t remember the exact year.
3:31 pm on January 21st, 2014
I am guessing the late 70s or early 80s based on how Johnny Carson looked.

3:49 pm on January 21st, 2014
Macy, let you family know we are with them in spirit.
3:50 pm on January 21st, 2014
Macy, I know it is a sad time but also a relief that his mom is finally at peace. Loving thoughts to your family.
We looked up John Suter, and the race where he finished 38 out of 52 was in 1988. According to the article, he ran again in 89, 90 and 91 and then was banned from racing again. Now only northern breeds can race. His daughter ran the Jr Iditarod (154 miles) and placed 3rd, also receiving Rookie of the Year, in 1992. She ran a team of Poodles.
3:53 pm on January 21st, 2014
Ah, Barb, we were just about to tell you that š

4:04 pm on January 21st, 2014
We are calling Lucy Lou home for a nap and dinner. She may go back again tonight to watch over the Storyteller.
4:14 pm on January 21st, 2014
Amalia, good to hear that Leonard will be watched over again tonight. Those lung things can be very scary sounding. Our best to Melanie too.
4:21 pm on January 21st, 2014
Lots of great links today. Maggie, why were the poodles banned?
Mom is home. Her drive took 3 1/2 hours. Pop was supposed to leave work at 3:00, but now they are having a problem so he is still there.
We have a lot of snow already. The farmer who stores some equipment in our barn just backed a haywagon up there. Mom is all poodled up about it because they figured he had everything up there months ago, so they put the horse trailer up there before the first snow. That is always put up last, so it can be accesses quickly in case of emergency.
4:23 pm on January 21st, 2014
Macy, we are relieved for your mom and dad, yet we know it is sad too. Give them some kisses for us, only make them dainty like yours.
Kat is still with Melanie. Hope she can blur home later, with the low visibility.
4:26 pm on January 21st, 2014
Day began here in S.E. TN at a balmy 40 and peaked at 10 a.m. at 44. Been dropping like a rock since then. Now at 30. Have had snow but the ground is so warm nothing is sticking š Could be in the single digits for our low tonight, yikes!
4:30 pm on January 21st, 2014
Macy, you and your family are in my thoughts.
Royal Mum, thanks for updating us on Melanie and the Storyteller. Hope he is tip-top soon.
4:36 pm on January 21st, 2014
CHobbit, hope everything turns out well for you.
4:48 pm on January 21st, 2014
Macy’s Mom: peace to you and your family.
Re: poodles. I recall a lot of controversy about the musher and his dogs. I don’t have time to research at the moment but I vaguely remember an article where it seemed like the dogs weren’t well taken care of and the harnesses were pulling the dogs’ hair out or something. Other mushers were upset/annoyed. It was long ago so I might be wrong but I got the impression that the musher was running poodles equally for the oddity of it along with his theory that they were strong, energetic, pulling dogs ideal for racing. He probably got some sponsors just for his visibility and from being on the Carson show.
4:51 pm on January 21st, 2014
HOH, Melanie, CHobbit–Thank you for the updates–it sound slike things are coming under control. What’s a crash cart?
4:53 pm on January 21st, 2014
Macy’s Mom–I just got caught up. May you all find peace and serenity serenity.
5:19 pm on January 21st, 2014
Diane, a crash cart is an emergency tool for when some “crashes” or flatlines. It is what they use to show the person and try to restart the heart. Clever disguise, heh?
5:20 pm on January 21st, 2014
GAH! Shock, not show, heh?
5:24 pm on January 21st, 2014
Diane, we didn’t know what a crash cart was either.

Hope Momma held dinner for me me me.
5:41 pm on January 21st, 2014
Howlers, from what we read the mushers were not thrilled with the Poodle team. There was a saying after Susan Bucher won the Iditarod “Alaska, where women win the Iditarod and men mush Poodles” or something close to that. Evidently they got more annoyed with Suter each year. One article said “no one wanted to see a Poodle kick a Husky’s butt”, maybe written by a Poodle person. There was also speculation that Suter just wanted a movie deal out of it. The final year while a tv crew was filming, one of the Poodles got stuck to the ground. It was quickly freed and was unharmed, but he got banned after that.
5:44 pm on January 21st, 2014
I am seeing the doctor later today with the results of the MRI. Sadie and I are at the v e t for followup tests. However both Sadie and I have improved.
It is a little rainy here. We need our cold back. Stop hogging it and return it please.
5:48 pm on January 21st, 2014
Yark, I was wrong about the Poodles only doing the Iditarod one year. Mom just poked me in the rib and said it isn’t the first time I have been wrong.
I am sure he doesn’t want to, but keeping th Storyteller in the hospital one more night sounds like a good idea.
Amalia is going to be tired when she gets home tonight.
6:00 pm on January 21st, 2014
Thanks for all of the information on the poodles in the Iditarod. We are inclined to believe what C.Hobbit said, that Suter was just racing poodles for the publicity, and certainly not for their best interest.
6:17 pm on January 21st, 2014
A Poodle can probably handle cold, as they were originally bred as a water retriever. However their coat doesn’t repel the snow and ice they way a husky’s will. Also, huskies have it in their DNA to run, Poodles do not. We agree that he probably wanted the publicity.

7:12 pm on January 21st, 2014
(Pookey here) Pleased to report that Lucy got home safely, took a good nap and has headed back to the hospital to guard the Storyteller tonight. Only one incident last night, well early this a.m., when someone came into the room. Turns out, after the confusion in the semi-darkness, to be the person who draws blood and boy, was she shocked to hear a growling crash cart. Lucy says she learned that lesson and it won’t happen again.
I want Lucy to come home because I am tired of putting up with the BIG puppy š
7:25 pm on January 21st, 2014
And the latest news to report –
Left the hospital at 4:30, after tucking in the Storyteller and going back down to surgery to check on Melanie. They gave her a pain shot during the biopsy at 11:30 – it finally kicked in at about 3:30, so at 4:30 she was looking just a little unfocused, and was in no pain.
Martha was with her, and Melanie was slated to be released at any minute, so we think they probably got home before the snow started.
Meanwhile, the Storyteller is now headed for a CT scan – they think he might possibly have an embolism in his lung.
I am about ready to dive into a vat of peanut butter ice cream and not come out until I eat my way to the surface. Someone pass the cookies – I’m goin’ in!
7:58 pm on January 21st, 2014
Good thing Leonard is staying put. Can they tell from the CT if there is a blood clot in the lungs?
7:59 pm on January 21st, 2014
Awww – Magpie, you are too cute!
7:59 pm on January 21st, 2014
Mac and Mattie: Please make sure your Melanie is tucked firmly under the quilt tonight, she needs it. If y’all can’t hold her down, call me and I’ll come help, even if I have a short attention sp…leaves blowing!
-Darah
8:00 pm on January 21st, 2014
Barb and Maggie – they do a blood test to look for certain markers in the blood that would indicate a clot. If they find the markers, they do a CT scan to verify. If they then find a clot, they start treatment.
8:16 pm on January 21st, 2014
What a cutie you are, Maggie!
Royal Mum, thinking of you and the Storyteller. Hope all goes well.
8:19 pm on January 21st, 2014
Yeeks!
T&G: I am eating some nutty moose track ice cream in sympathy with the Royal Mum.
The quilt is getting a lot of use so far this year.
Gone fishing, sort of? I wonder what Spence means by that.
Fonzie? I think Spence was referring to the new FOC’s language when he called him Fonzie. The new friend called his house a “pad” and said there were “cats” around as in “cool cats”. Something Fonzie would say.

Night all. Sweet dreams and stay safe under the Quilt.

(Pookey) 18*F and snow showers here. Won’t stick, ground is too warm. We think mom has lost her mind, she’s been standing outside in the night and snow and cold.
(Darah) What’s wrong with that? I do it every night. Once I slept on the patio at 23F. She’s been testing her Alaska clothes, whatever Alaska is, to see if they are warm. I think I’ll go back outside and bark at leaves blowing in the wind.
10:05 pm on January 21st, 2014
Gah! For the next 10 days we are to be in the 40s and high 30s–this is very bad for us and for mushers.
It sounds like everyone is where they are supposed to be and all will be okay. Those who need it, keep hanging in there.
Double Gah! I went to the doctor at 4:45 to get the results of my MRI. I had hand- carried the disk over to the doctors office right after the MRI this morning (waited in the office 20 minutes for it). Anyhoo…the disk is unusable as it wouldn’t read on any computer in the doctor’s office. He said that had never happened before (why did it have to happen to *me*). Doctor has called the MRI clinic twice since noon to at least get a written report faxed over. No go. So I wasted a doctor’s visit at rush hour traffic and another appointment is rescheduled for tomorrow. I guess it is a good thing I am retired.

Philip has a race this weekend to qualify for next year’s Iditarod. This warm weather is awful. They need to look at the weather history and consider moving the Iditarod to an earlier date.
Will check back in before bed. I also get results from Sadie’s tests tomorrow. And my car goes into the shop. For some reason I had thought retirement would be more like having my feet propped up, reading books and eating bon bons.

Dear Ms Belle Star. I think I found your sparkles. Mommy and Daddy took me out for a walk tonight in this fluffy white stuff and it sparkled like lots of glitter. We won’t talk about how I know about glitter Something about Mommy and a Christmas project. Anyways it was beautious just like you and Ms Wrose.

Hobbit: Mom looked at retirement that way too but as Melanie says, “Plot twist”. Now she wonders how she ever had time to go to work and do anything else!
Mom said she worked up a sweat getting into the cold weather gear.

Time!…You retired guys better hope my friend does not read about you whining over being too busy and not having enough time…grunt!….She spends at least 11 hours a day getting ready for the busy-play, going to the busy-place, being at the busy-place and finally coming home from the busy-place…sniff!…Throw in about 8 hours of sleep give or take and she has 5 lousy FREE hours a day….grump!…Do not let her read you whining about no free freakin’ time during retirement….growl!

Oh!…And those free hours are in the evening and are eaten up by supper-time (or getting supper), doing dishes and walking us…grump!….That walking-us part could be given up for pete’s sake…sniff!

I too have many friends who complain about never having any time now that they are retired. snicker. I remember my friend Lois telling me how she was finally going to get all her closets cleaned up now that she retired. Heh. Never happened.

When I get to Alaska, it had better not be like Vermont in “White Christmas”! I have called in my order for an extra helping of snow, pronto, or at least by Feb. 18.

Funny story about me and Wanda. When I was in high school, she worked in the snack bar in our cafeteria. Several times a week I would go in for a hamburger, with extra pickles. After a few times, she would automatically ask “extra pickles?”. Fast forward, met Rick, he took me home to meet his parents, the first thing I said to her was, “you’re the pickle lady!”

Hamburgers!…The standard order here for hamburgers is “Well Done, and extra pickles”…snort!..heh!heh!….I wonder what Wanda said after being called ‘the pickle lady’…chorkel!

Rio: I remember those working days. I let a lot of stuff slide. For 10 months of the year I had no life as an educator and then during those 2 summer months I was taking classes to update skills and certifications and later caring for aging and ill parents. All too soon work loomed and I had to prepare for the next school year. I would try and cram in house and auto maintenance in during breaks –I had very little free, fun time.
I think the 40-hour work week is a joke. Most people have an unpaid lunch hour and most people spend at least one hour a day driving to/from work. That means 10 hours a day away from home. Add in errands and shopping and no wonder people are stressed and dogs are lonely. It was in the 1920s that the 40-hour work week was instituted. I think almost 100 years later, we are overdue to institute a 35-hour work week with more vacations and holidays. We are working ourselves to death. Other countries are much more civilized about how to live and work. Getting off my soapbox…

Rio. Don’t tease poor old Staff just because I didn’t log off the computer. You know she has a very short attention span and way too many use this computer.
Hmmm
Another potholder? We just gave another one up and tomorrow Staff is actually going to mail yours and Wolfies. Finally.
I could do another though for somewhere between 1000.00 and 1500.00. We have got to get going on the booties.
So I will tell that Staff to choose a number and then tell her she must make another potholder. So what do you order oh puggy one? Garden Veggie or one more Chicken one?
I will check back in the morning Staff is going to feed me now. I am a STARVIN’ MARVIN! heh hehehehhehh heh.

HOH–Crash cart sounds like a brilliant disguise, but possibly scary for the patient (at first–before the fact that it’s a disguise is revealed).
Everyone–Thanks for all the Iditarod information–really interesting.

Macy’s Mom–What a beauty! And with access to pickles, too…(Maybe now she can visit you in your dreams, looking as she did then..)
I see Rio is now plural pugs. Is this an aspect of blurring, or cloning, or…?
Hoping for more health news, guess I have to wait for tomorrow’s (today’s) page.
