Next Year
“And now we all get to wait until next year, as they say in baseball,” Spence says.
“What if we don’t want to wait?” Admin says.
“There’s a lot of waiting in life.”
“I’ve noticed,” Admin says. “So life and baseball are similar in that respect. But there’s a lot of spitting in baseball, too, and you don’t see much of that in normal life, in social situations, say.”
“Probably a good thing,” says Spence.
“Doesn’t Chet have some observation about spitting? Maybe how you never see women doing it?”
“Possibly. Maybe we can dig it up.”
Digging? Digging is on the schedule? Today’s starting out perfectly.
Welcome Buddy, Two dudes on a chair, a fox (!?), and a dude with a cool stare.

Morning plunderers! My world is perfect right now. Mom is home, grandma is still sleeping, and I am laying next to grandma on the couch with all my toys within sight. It doesn’t get any better than this, unless Slim Jim’s are involved.
9:40 am on October 29th, 2011
Good morning. Loved the game last night. Sorry Macy, know you are not happy today!
Did anyone see the articles on Boxcar Hunter? We mentioned it last night, have to go back and read some posts we missed. Boxy traveled thru several states on the top of a freight train before being rescued. Wonder how he got there. Hope it wasn’t some nasty teenagers.
Alice Johnson was up above. Hi there, Alice Magnolia!
9:49 am on October 29th, 2011
Good morning! Going to be an interesting day. Zoe took part of the crew out in the Honda and 6 ended up going. Some two snuck in there. Haven’t had a phone call yet, so I’m guessing all is going well.
I’ll be headed down the hills. Doing some errands and taking some pictures for the Royals’ Mum.
Then scrambling back up here before the snow hits. Rio was right about our first snow. It was wimpy. This one is supposed to make up for that.
I received an email (snickering here, you know who you are) and will post a picture or two over the weekend to get ready for Howl-o-ween!
10:01 am on October 29th, 2011
Spitting, scratching and adjusting is all that goes on for hours and hours in America’s favorite sport. I hope you can dig and dig today Chet.
Good morning all.

Morning Jasper, B&M, and Melanie!
We are waiting on some snow here in Croton on Hudson today…Bring it on! All the end-of-the-worlders have already cleared out the supermarkets.
Melanie: Cool picture!
B&M: I posted the link to the Boxcar Hunter story, and Daniel, the dog who survived being gassed last night at 6:24pm. It was sitting in the Bermuda Triangle of moderation, but it’s there now.
Miss Macy: Sorry your team didn’t win. I’m sure Mr. Redbone will be sending some Southern comfort along to console you.
B and Siber: I read all three “Dragon Tattoo” books, and enjoyed them. The first book is the best. I would recommend to all that you should see the foreign language versions of the films. The American version promises to stay true to the foreign film. We’ll see…The Prof and I are anxious to see it. We’ll both be comparing it to the original.
B: Sorry to hear about the “Ides of March.” I like George Clooney and Ryan Gosling, and Clooney has directed some good films. Oh, well.
Greetings to ALL!
10:13 am on October 29th, 2011
That fox in FOC sure is cute.
Rebecca: Thing number 2 is so very adorable!!! The Prof should be home very soon. He just wants to thank the girls for watching over me, and kiss then goodbye. I’ve packed some of the sugar and chocolate chip cookies for them as snacks for thier trip back. I heard some whispering about paying a visit to the pug….
10:33 am on October 29th, 2011
Good Morning Everyone!
Siber-H: Chet’s post is for you! Carry on.
Had a small problem with internet connection last night, but it seems to have cleared up nicely this morning.
Congratulations to St.Louis – the World Series winners.
Rose: Thanking you for the links last night for Boxcar Hunter and Daniel. Incredible stories! Little Boxy now has a family and Daniel is a Miracle Dog with big things ahead.
We know Melanie is right about the blog moderator not liking more than one link in a post. tsk tsk…such a touchy guy sometimes!
Jasper: We had no idea your mom was so fierce. She really took care of business up there in the U Pee. Heads were roll’n!
10:33 am on October 29th, 2011
Thank you Rose. We read the story about Daniel too. Heartwarming, but sad for the other 18 dogs who did not survive the gas chamber. He is out of a shelter in Alabama. We need more no-kill shelters down there!
10:36 am on October 29th, 2011
Rose: The acting in Ides of March is very good. It’s the writing that I object to. I kept waiting for something different to happen but it never did. And I questioned the reason for some things. I’d be interested to know what you think about the movie.
11:07 am on October 29th, 2011
Bear: I am always touched when I come across any news that has to do with animals. I am very happy Boxcar has her forever home!
It is really amazing how resilient the nation within is.
B&M: It is terrible hat there are still shelters that kill there animals. I could never work in a place like that. Just last Sunday, the Prof and I stopped by PetSmart, and they had some dogs and kitties outside who were up for adoption. I couldn’t stay long, becuase I was tearing up, wishing that I could take a doggie or kitty home.
B: I’ll get back to you when the Prof and I see the picture. I’m very curious now.
11:08 am on October 29th, 2011
BTW: I like the staring dude too in FOC. T&G, he’s one of yours, right?
11:10 am on October 29th, 2011
B&M: I apologize for my terrible typos….
11:15 am on October 29th, 2011
Rebecca: The Prof got home about 10:15 (NY time). There was much twirling, hugs, and tummies had by all. After many kisses and wiping of tears (me), Luna and Belle blurred off about 10:45. Belle’s pink backpack is full to the bursting. Thank you for allowing them to stay with me. They protected me well.
Hope the pug is up and at ’em.
11:25 am on October 29th, 2011
B: If the movie’s not that great guess we’ll wait for it to come out on DVD. We rarely go to a theatre unless there is something special we would like to see on the big screen. Looking forward to the American version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Believe the foreign versions of the trilogy are on Netflix streaming video. Have not read the books.
Melanie: Wonder how Zoe is doing with 8 members of the pack squeezed into the Element which is prepared for 4. What a image!
Love the Halloween Dog! I may dress up as the Big Bad Wolf for the occasion. Good Grief! The big day is on Monday……
11:33 am on October 29th, 2011
Good morning to all. It is snowing like crazy here. We lost our internet last evening so we missed hearing from all of you during that great game. We are using 3g connection now; should have thought of that last night.
Great picture, Melanie. Jasper, we agree with you that a perfect day is when all our people are home with us, with toys close by. That is how we are spending our “noreaster” day here too.
11:34 am on October 29th, 2011
Oh yes… We loved the Girl with dragon tattoo books also…all of them.
11:36 am on October 29th, 2011
Hey Everybody! Forgot to say. There’s a rumor on Facebookie that Chet is serving up bacon (or at least someone with opposable thumbs is – possibly Spence)
11:38 am on October 29th, 2011
OH: Have you seen any of the films? The foreign language triology is great! Love the woman that plays Lisbeth. Her name is Noomi Rapace.
BTW: How are the howlers getting along with the stunning redhead?
11:40 am on October 29th, 2011
Rebbeca: Please advise when the girls return home. I’m worried about some of this bad weather they may be blurring toward.
11:45 am on October 29th, 2011
Siber: Just wanted to let you know I will start reading “The Affair.” Then I will try to read the rest of the series in order.
11:46 am on October 29th, 2011
Rose, we have not seen any of the films. Do you know if they are available on Netflix streaming? We’d love to see how the lead plays Lisbeth.
All of us Howlers have decided that Kat fits in well with our pack. She sleeps like Dima, plays like Meashka, and barks right back at bossy me (Sasha). Even Buddy and T.C. say she is pretty kool. But we are still going to call her “Pipsqueak”, to keep her in her place.
O NO lights are flickering here now! Bye for awhile.
12:03 pm on October 29th, 2011
The Celebration continues in St.Louis this morning! First time I believe I’ve seen a smile on Tony La Russa’s face the entire time. What an incredible series it was. Game six will surely go down in sports history as did Pujols’ 3 HR slammers in the 3rd game in Arlington.
Hi Rose! I may have mentioned last night about seeing the foreign versions of the films. They really are very good. The ones we saw seemed to be dubbed with a few subtitles.
Saying goodbye to the girls this morning must have been very difficult, but having the Prof home will make up for your sadness in seeing them go. Wonder if they will make one more attempt to visit with Rio…..
BTW Thank you for the cookies which were some of the best we have ever tasted. I wonder if you would be willing to share the recipe?
12:11 pm on October 29th, 2011
OH: I believe Bear said he thinks the foreign versions are on Netflix streaming. As for me, the Prof and I own the 3 DVD’s. Would be willing to share them via mail, if not available on Netflix…Traveling DVDs, what a concept!
I’m glad that Kat has received the OH stamp of approval.
12:25 pm on October 29th, 2011
Snowing here…in Westchester. Egads!
Hey there, Masquers: We saw the Swedish language films with English subtitles. The DVDs can be viewed that way, or with English dubbing. I prefer to watch in the original language. I kind of feel that if you watch the film dubbed in English, you don’t get the original power of the words and emotions as if you watch it in the original language. Hope that makes sense.
It was very hard to say goodbye to the girls. They are wonderful four-leggeds! Rebbeca has raised them well. But I’m real glad to have the Prof back home!
Talk among Belle and Luna was that they planned to make a stop or two. Rio needs to be on the look-out, since the girls decided to wear their Halloween costumes home. He may only be able to tell them by the smell of cookies….
(Whispering): Masquers you are too kind. The recipes were from the Pilsbury Doughboy, and Nestles…..You would not want me in your kithen.

That was “Kitchen”
12:32 pm on October 29th, 2011
Barb wanted to report this little story. You all know what a terror I am with the mousies and rats. Well last night she had a trap set under the kitchen sink (hates to do it, but necessary). We heard it snap while watching the game. We immediately went to the kitchen and opened the cabinet door. The mousie was laying there dead. I took one sniff and walked away. I could tell it was dead and did not need my attention. Barb cannot figure out how I know the difference within seconds after death. Any opinions? Are kats the same?
12:36 pm on October 29th, 2011
Maybe it is just your superior sense of smell….

DIGGING!!! Chet, Great minds think alike. I’m with Admin.–I don’t want to wait until baseball season begins, but digging is something to do while waiting. Perhaps Admin. should take up the art of digging. I’m trying to get mom interested in it.
About spitting—We don’t understand why baseball players that are chewing bubblegum need to spit.
1:11 pm on October 29th, 2011
Amazon has all three of the Girl with the Dragon Tatoo etc. on streaming and with English subtitles.
I keep seeing Elements on the road now. I’d never heard of it until Melanie bought one.
1:12 pm on October 29th, 2011
Maggie, This may or may not be the explnation about the dead mouse, but it could have been you had no use for it because it wasn’t moving anymore. Predators (that’s us) are attracted to movement. It gets our prey drive going. That is why you two-leggeds never ever want to run from a grizzly bear.
They have done studies and dogs can see movement much better than they can see the same thing standing still.
1:18 pm on October 29th, 2011
The director of our Media Com degree program was involved with the filiming of Ides of March. She’s hosting one of our Humanities teas and will discuss it. I’ll have to think of a diplomatic way of saying I didn’t like it. Perhaps I’ll just ask why one thing happened and why another thing didn’t.
1:18 pm on October 29th, 2011
Mom made homemade chicken soup ’cause grandma was feeling a little sniffly. Mom is going to make Ina Garten’s lemon yogurt cake this afternoon. I love when those lemons squirt, but the taste and smell makes my nose wrinkle.
1:38 pm on October 29th, 2011
Rose: I hadn’t received a text from Luna or Belle Starr—the first usually from an excited Belle Starr and then followed up with a logical text from Luna offering more explaination—so I figured they were having a great time with you. Thanks for taking care of them—or was it the other way around?
I did receive a text from Luna saying they were hoping to stop by Rio’s place (this time wearing ‘Hello my name is’ nametags.
1:41 pm on October 29th, 2011
Rebecca? The girls aren’t in cat costumes are they? Today is National Chase a Cat Day.
1:43 pm on October 29th, 2011
Siber, I think you are right about the movement. A mouse that was dead for 10 seconds couldn’t possibly have a different scent.
1:45 pm on October 29th, 2011
Siber-H: I believe they are in cat costumes. And, since my last post, I received a text from Luna that they wanted to stop by your place. They started their journey with Yummy Chummies for you, but I don’t know if they still have them. If you see two large cats wearing name tags, they are not to be chased.
1:54 pm on October 29th, 2011
Ok, Rebecca, I for sure won’t chase them. They are welcome to stop by here and visit with me. Mom said she would throw some ribs on the grill for us.
Don’t tell the girls this because I want them to stop by, but the weather here is awful..sunshine, high of 67 degrees.
2:16 pm on October 29th, 2011
Kat is very happy that today is named for her.
But about Cats…we only chase them when they are outdoors. One day Buddy got out by accident, and Mom & Pop didn’t notice. They looked up to see Dima stalking and turned around to see what he was stalking. It was the Budster…pal of all us huskies! He just somehow looked different outside.

Sob sob, sniff sob, sob
Not only did the Rangers not win, but now its SNOWING!
Horrible awful icky slippery snow.
Big clumpy flakes of icey snow.
awww woooooooo\
can this day get any worse?
Oh, wait a minute – the CL was in DC for the weekend, and is supposed to be flying back home tonight. Maybe her flight will be cancelled. Maybe she will be rerouted through Parump, NV., or better yet, through Roswell NM where the Marauding Goats can get her. Maybe she will get lost in the snow, never to be seen again. Maybe its not such a bad day after all.
2:44 pm on October 29th, 2011
Siber-H: I recieved a text that they may be coming to your doorstep any moment now, but empty pawed. It seems the Yummy Chummies didn’t make it past their visit with Howlers. They do have homemade cookies courtesy of Rose.
2:48 pm on October 29th, 2011
Baseball!…. We will Wait Till Next Year again…sniff!…Me and my friend are used to waiting till next year for our team….sigh!….Oh well, it was really really fun while it lasted and we learned a lot about some other teams and players….snort!….That is always high on our list in the Fall…heh!
Errands!….My friend left early this morning and worked out at the place Stinky Mama works for. I’m supposed to tell Stinky Mama that she is up to 4 circuts now…grunt!…Then she had to do grocery shopping because she has once again been given permission to cook supper…heh!… After that she had to run to some other stores because lately her mother decided that she doesn’t want to leave the house during the week and do these annoying errands…wheeze!…She waits till the weekend and then asks my friend to do them for her…grunt!….My friend obliges but she has A LOT of work to do on her projects today…sniff! ….Finally we are downstairs and she is working on the finishing touches of about a billion little cards…sneeze!cough!…I’m not allowed with in 10 feet of her…wuffle!
2:57 pm on October 29th, 2011
Siber-H: That is excellent advise not to run. Too bad guy didn’t take it!

2:59 pm on October 29th, 2011
Rio – 4 CIRCUITS??? Thats not supposed to happen. Is your friend’s club “smart”? Does it have 13 machines? Kinda the whole point is twice around 13 machines and 13 boards for a 30 minute workout.
We admire her fortitude, but wow! With the smart card pushing you, even our athlete ladies couldn’t make it 4 times.

T&G said it’s snowing and dog is it! I left their place (they are so cute in their howl-o-ween costumes, I’m not sure exactly what they were but it involved a whole bunch of package tape) and it was just a few flakes.
I just got home and the snow is covering the road, falling very thick and heavy. The generator is ready to go, just in case.
The computer is hooked up to the generator so people will be getting their pictures returned. No matter how deep the snow, the MG’s will not stop us.
Just showed Thing 2 to Zoe, she totally approves.
The movies are very good, and extremely intense.
YSAS was in 7th heaven yesterday. He was a cop raiding an illegal gambling parlor. They had a blast. For those of you who know “The Princess Bride”, I asked him, “Did you have fun storming the castle?”
More dogs is costumes.

3:17 pm on October 29th, 2011
Rebecca, we are happy to tell you Belle and Luna are in good spirits, though tired, after our fun romp in the snow. The Yummie Chummies were great, and we made sure to save some for their visit with Siber. Unfortunately, the Pipsqueak didn’t see it that way. Siber, please accept our apologies on her behalf. She needs more manners training.
3:26 pm on October 29th, 2011

Circuts!….Stinky Mama, my friend says she has been doing 3 circuits since she first started – 45 minutes….sniff!….Today she pushed it to 4 circuits and did 60 minutes…wheeze!… She said she probably won’t be able to go over 4, at least not for a very long time…heh! …Oh and she said to tell you she has dropped 10 since Oct. 1st…sniff! …Whatever that means…cough!
3:47 pm on October 29th, 2011
BSD: That picture is a great example of learning from others’ mistakes.

Snow!… Melanie, now that is some Macho Snow!…snort!…Thank goodness its the weekend and you can just hibernate till it passes…..snort!
3:51 pm on October 29th, 2011
Dawson,
Please check your SDD.
No snow here in North Dakota. It is not sunny today and a bit windy in the 50’s. Rather nice all things considered.
3:52 pm on October 29th, 2011
Melanie: The team is jealous of the Pack’s snow. While the temperatures are falling, the snow isn’t. The team is training on frost covered ground. SDD checked and response sent.
3:52 pm on October 29th, 2011
Rio, Kudos to your friend! She is simply amazing. When she makes up her mind she is unstoppable!
4:25 pm on October 29th, 2011
Rebecca, The girls are staying with me until tomorrow morning. We are having a barbeque tonight and they are going with me to the dog park tomorrow morning. They will continue on their journey after that.
I just finished showing them all my projects in the yard.
4:31 pm on October 29th, 2011
Bear, That picture is funny.
Love the Northern Lights, especially since I never get to see them.
SNOW!! That looks like the heavy wet snow that destroys trees. I’d be happy with it.
4:42 pm on October 29th, 2011
SnowBella: Heh! Mistakes. Now if I could only learn from my own…
5:00 pm on October 29th, 2011
B: We trust you to be very diplomatic. It will be interesting to hear how the discussion went.
Wonder if MollyPop’s Mom is snowed in too…..
5:12 pm on October 29th, 2011
Break!….My friend is taking a break from working on the project…sniff!…Now she has to go put together her awesome spaghetti meat sauce….wheeze!… She said she is going to make stuffed manacoti for supper. She uses that Dry Cottage Cheese instead of that other kind of white crappy cheese…heh!….So there is a lot of kitchen work to go do now. I will follow her closely because apparently I am always under foot in the kitchen and I do not want to disappoint anybody today…grunt!
5:35 pm on October 29th, 2011
At this point the snow is relatively light. Which is good. It’s been 3.5 hours and we now have over 8 inches of the stuff.
Riö, tell your friend that she is awesome!
5:47 pm on October 29th, 2011
Rio: Junior trained with the A team again today! He is ambitious, that’s for sure. Maybe he gets it from your friend.
Siber-H: Thank you for hosting guests that happened to blur by with little to no warning.
6:20 pm on October 29th, 2011
Melanie, The picture is beautiful, but it is OCTOBER!
Bear, Very funy shot.
We have a movie, True Grit, but may not watch it tonight.
Siber and Wookie, Know you have both read most of Tony Hillerman. We got one that was written in ’96, called Finding Moon. It is not set in the SW. and does not have Chee and Leaphorn in it. It is about Vietnam and is set in 1975. Have you read it? It is good so far.
6:26 pm on October 29th, 2011
Barb & Maggie: AJ and I saw True Grit with friends who Rio’s friend will meet in March — they are part of our pit crew and they are not giants. One scene of the movie made me cry—you’ll know it when you see it. Since then, when I see people cry, I say to myself that they are having a “True Grit” moment. I really liked the show.
6:27 pm on October 29th, 2011
Barb, Mom skipped over that Hillerman book because it wasn’t set in the southwest. Let us know what you think of it. I’m also wondering if Wookie read it.
6:35 pm on October 29th, 2011
Over a foot of snow. Our neighbor is out snowplowing. Seems useless at this point. why not wait until it’s all over and there’s a chance that our neighbor down the street with the tractor snowblower will come and do it?
Yes, Barb and MagPie. This is January weather.
Another dog costume . . .

6:36 pm on October 29th, 2011
I did not write snowplowing. That is this snigglefritz spell thingy.
He’s snow blowing with a snow blower. Jeez Louise
6:49 pm on October 29th, 2011
Bonanza!….Woooooo!…While my friend was cooking she picked up an open bag of shredded mozzarella cheese and dumped half of it on the floor right where you-know-who was standing underfoot…heh!heh!… It was a free for all! I was snuffling up cheese as fast I as I could while she was trying to gather it up in a dust pan…..wheeze! ….I think I got far more of it than that dust pan did…wooooooo! …Being underfoot all the time has some real advantages….snort!snort!
7:05 pm on October 29th, 2011
Melanie: Great pictures of the snow and Halloween costumes!

hi everyone. No time to read all the entries so far but will catch up later. Melanie says goodnight as her Internet is out of commission with the storm. And we are sitting here in the dark with no power, so Mama says we have to conserve cell phone juice.
We hope toall be back up to speed tomorrow. G’night all

Deja vu!… snort!…. I remember not too long ago being without power and heat…grunt!… I froze my whatsitz off…sniff!…It’s no fun at all. I sure hope Zoe and Dan and Melanie are okay thru the night. Not to mention all the Newfs! They will probably try and keep everyone warm during that awful storm…wheeze!
Supper!….Was amazing! I just found out that I love love love stuffed manicotti…heh!…No doubt about it. I love it!…Wooooo!… Her mother must have liked it too because she did not say any disparaging words during supper…heh!…No nice thoughtful words either, but we have to take baby steps with this Supper Thing…grunt!
8:15 pm on October 29th, 2011
PS:!…I also hope Stinky Mama and her family are safe and sound if not cold and bored tonight…grunt!…Hopefully this power outage thing won’t last as long as ours did, which was for 10 days it seemed like…grunt! ….Awful business…sniff!
8:21 pm on October 29th, 2011
Rio: I don’t know how you managed stuffed manicotti on top of the bag of cheese you had as an appetizer.
Warm wishes going to the Golinka Gang and the Newf Pack! AJ and I call such nights ‘Little House on the Prarie’ nights, because it usually means we’re reading by oil lamp and wearing our knit caps to bed to keep warm.
8:30 pm on October 29th, 2011
Manage!… Heh! Rebecca, you obviously have no idea the amount of food I can put away….snort!…Legally or illegally. That cheese was just an appetizer…sniff!… Of course I do not, under the watchful eyes of my friend, get very much table food. But her mother always manages to sneak me a couple spoonfuls of whatever they are eating. And that manacotti was Wonderful! …woooooo!
8:38 pm on October 29th, 2011
Rio: I may learn first hand in March how much you can consume. Luna, Tenzing and Belle Starr always sit near AJ when he is eating. I think he has a track record of giving the ocassional handout.

Well I am turning off the computer and saying goodnight. I hope Dawson gets a chance to read the message for her to check her SDD.
All you powerless people have a good warm night.

All buried under a blanket of snow
No phone, internet or power tonight
Cuddle together by fireplace’s glow
Safe & warm til the morning’s light

B&M. My dad says it’s been a while since he read Finding Moon, but he recalls that it was very good. It was one of only two non-Southwestern novels that Hillerman wrote — the other being A Fly on the Wall, which he wrote much earlier in his career. That one was also quite good and set in a newspaper newsroom — which made sense since Hillerman began as a reporter before he became a novelist. Wookie

Wookie, This book has a setting partially in a newsroom, at least it starts that way. Moon Mathias is a newpaper man, but not sure he will be back there – right now he is in California, heading for Manila. Haven’t gotten very far, but I think it will be good. The book jacket says it is a story Hillerman wanted to tell for a long time, so I am wondering if he is pulling from personal experiences.

yikes!!! Neighbors tree came down invent house right over our Grampa’s bedroom. It took out our fence and part of the roof overhang. There is a tree branch sticking right out of our attic.
Trees are breaking all over the place and Mama is a quivering mess.
She wants to go sleep in the cedar closet in the basement.
Have we mentioned how much she hates snow?
They are calling this a “snowicane” Apparently there is an eye to this storm like a hurricane. Carpola!
Hope to talk to you all tomorrow – sob sob – if we make it thru the night
Signed

Girls, T&G Everything will be okay. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Stay in whatever you think is the safest part of your house. Wish all of you were here with us in boring no-weather NM.

T&G. Please be careful, and do not, I repeat do not, try to herd falling branches. Seriously, be safe and stay warm.
B&M. My dad said he had forgotten how it started; that is interesting. If you do like Finding Moon, he would strongly encourage that you read A Fly on the Wall as well. Wookie

Melanie, Family, and The Pack have a generator so they have power, but their internet is down.
The Corgies don’t have a generator and the battery in their cell phone will only last so long.
We may lose communication with all of them until service is restored.
