National Dog Day

“Apparently it’s National Dog Day,” Admin says. “Know anything about it?”

“I think it’s fairly recent,” says Spence. “Other than that, no.”

“Does it mean Chet gets the day off?” Admin says.

Day off? I don’t like the sound of that at all. I’m a player!

“Saw your interview at LitStack,” Admin says. “Okay to post it?”

Loving this . . . (Although who ended up being the sidekick is debatable.)

Tell Spencer, Admin, Audrey, Peter and all, to take care!

Today is getting ready for Irene. Making sure there’s enough gas for the generator, grabbing milk and yogurt. Other stuff that I put on a list that I’m not remembering because I have not had enough coco.

Morning ALL!! Sounds like a party might be going on in AK! Love it! Take pictures!

Greetings to all – especially Alice, Abbie, BlueCat, Gus and BooBear, Buddy and TC and any other Kats who may be listening.
National Dog Day indeed! What folderol! Like they need a day. These stupid Dawgs around here get treats just for being alive, they get to go for car rides (which, truth be told, make us sick) and they get to go outside and chase bears.
And do WE get a day? We who hunt down vicious mousies, both real and catnip; we who hold down the carpet when the sun shines in and threatens to lift it up, we who keep blankets firmly tucked around people’s legs in bed; we who are impossibly cute and/or beautiful? NO! It’s not fair, we tell you. It’s absolutely unamerican! It’s obviously a plot by evil forces who want to subjegate the rights of all Kitties……what? What did Tupper just say…..oh….National Kat Day is October 29…….
    um…..nevermind. Happy Dog Day.

Good morning and Happy National Dog Day, to all those worthy of the recognition (no kats, of course). Dog Day is actually on our calendar.
In October, we have National Feral Cat Day on Oct. 16th as well as the regular Kat Day here to fore mentioned. Who knew Ferals had their own day? Is there as National Feral Dog day, I humbly ask?
On a more serious note, we have had way too many disasters this year. What is happening? Is everybody getting ready for tomorrow? Guess there are some good things about living in Illinois, not many but a few.

Happy National Dog Day to all my canine friends here on the blog!! I hope Chet and Audrey have a special day. We are going back to the dog park at sunset for a small celebration with my closest friends and treats from the three dog bakery.
Today, Kats should simply be ignored.

Bear, National Feral Cat Day is Oct. 16. Regular National Cat Day, for those who are semi-civilized is Oct. 29th. Also, just in case anyone cares, National Mule Day is Oct. 26th, and Dec. 2nd is National Mutt Day. Didn’t some reviewer call Chet a mutt?

SiberH: Thanks for your concern. I think in the part of NY that I live in, it will mostly be very heavy rain and winds. The concern seems to be for the residents of NYC, and those in Long Island coastal areas. NYC is shutting down all subway and commuter rails beginning tomorrow at 4.

Earthquakes, now a hurricane – and we supposedly are in a less risky area of the country.

Barb: I don’t think I’ve seen Songcatcher. Are you getting it from Netflix?

  41. Barb & Maggie
    2:40 pm on August 26th, 2011

Yes, Songcatcher is from Netflix. Welcome to the Rileys has a lot of language – so if the f word offends, probably don’t want to watch it. We are fine with language, just extreme violence is something we stay away from. Welcome was interesting, and was sort of uplifting in a way, but not in a sugary, unrealistic sense.

Gosh, the weather is acary. Barb’s bro and SIL are far enough inland that they are ok, but we have a lot of blog friends that are going to need to hunker down, or escape to higher ground!

Back from errands. Jeez Louise, I wish I had been able to get out yesterday. NO SHOPPING CARTS! Had to wait to grab one. And I really didn’t mean to knock that poor man down. . .

Latest on hurricane in this area. “Supposedly” it will hit CT as a Category 1 and come through MA right in The Royals’ and The Pack’s county. wow . . .

We’ve battened down the hatches. The police have robo called saying we are expecting 10 inches of rain and that though they will be patrolling (1 car for the town) don’t expect instant help. He also said that if it were snow we would have 7 feet.

Always looks on the bright side, our police chief!

YSAS is going to Queens for the duration. Leaving the city tonight, he’s got an audition in 10 minutes and going after that.

They have bottled water, boarded (bored) games, batteries and such.

They are closing all Mass Transportation on Saturday at 12 noon.

Jesse really helped out today. Everything that can move is either in the garage, shed or tied down.

Whew, I’m going to have some V8 and relax with some Due South.

    5:13 pm on August 26th, 2011

We finally got the computer away from those dang cats. And now we are getting to scared to say much. The weatherman says we are going to GET HIT with THE BIGGEST STORM in 50 YEARS!!! He says we may get up to 10 INCHES of RAIN and may have FLOODING and HIGH WINDS!

Ok, to be honest, we are a little concerned. We have had a tornado, an earthquake and now a hurricane – geez, not the kind of triple header we would prefer.

We live on top of a hill, so flooding is not a big concern. We have lots of big trees in the yard, so that is a little scary. We did not get bottled water – we filled a few jugs. We do have a good supply of batteries, candles, charcoal (to grill with) and most important – potato chips. Any emergency can made a little better with potato chips. And dog biscuits…lots and lots of dog biscuits.

Some of these toys can go to the bull-pen, she says some can be retired, but I disagree….gruffle!…I might make some trades, but I will never retire a toy….grunt! …Then I will have room for the big slugger to come and make his home here in my warm soft bed….wuffle!

National Dog Day! Wow. and all we get to do is help with hurricane preparation. We can’t talk long. Pop is stopping at the grocery store on his way home. Its probably so crowded he won’t make it home til midnight!
Mom is getting ready to go clean stalls, after she unloads the rest of the feed (dog feed, cat feed, bird feed). She unloaded horse feed already. Just so there is enough food for us, we will ride this storm out just fine.
Mom is all in a frazzle with all of the dire predictions. Are they just going a little crazy again? Or is this hurricane really going to be that bad? We were afraid Pop would have to go to work Saturday night so that he is there in case of any outages. But he found out that he can stay home until/unless there are outages at the hospital.
Tomorrow morning, Mom and Pop are going to put away everything that is outside: patio furniture, porch furniture, firepit furniture, riding ring obstacle course stuff. We are hoping our lounge chairs get to stay out.

We think that the decals will go like hotcakes! Not everyone wears something that will hold a patch, but we can put decals on our cars, our refridgerators, our windows, our kibble tins…the list goes on and on. We would be happy to pay $2.50 for each one – what a deal!

We leave our best bones to Siber, Wolfie and Wookie
We leave our Service Dog vests to TYB
We leave all our leftover Kibble to the Pack – (there is a month’s supply for us, a midmorning snack for them)
We leave our brushes, leashes and collars to the Snowhook team

    we leave Basil and Sage.

Well, strike that! Hamlet looked at the map wrong. He’s not in any of the evac zones so YSAS is going to Queens.

Hope he remembers to plug in his phone.

I’m loving the decal idea, but it gave me another thought…I love magnets, in fact my fridge is home base for lots of them. Would magnets be an expensive item to produce?

Prof and I got through the hysteria at the supermarket. No water or bread, but suprisingly, plenty of milk. Just charging up all electronic devices now.

Hmmmph We are very hurt. T&G are not leaving anything to us after Irene meets them. So just see if they make it into our will.

Mom and Pop just finished cleaning stalls and stuff. Pop now had to go back to work, and Mom has to log back into her work at 1:00 am. Those two need to catch a break…like win a lottery.

Mom has a bee sting or a bad bite on her back and she said it hurts. Its so darn humid here, she is taking a shower no.

Dogs were domesticated a long time ago, but unfortunately not so for Mom. Can one of the plunderers explain, very slowly, how she should apply her patch to the sleeve of her winter jacket? And she loves decals and magnets. She’s in for either and/or.

Well furry and non furry folks, my running around has tuckered me out.

Wait, that’s weird. Tucker can be food, right? So if I’m tuckered out does that mean I’m tired OR I’m out of food.

Howlers – we are SO sorry. We forgot one line.

To the Howlers – we leave Gilly’s herded collection of snakes, little birds and chipmunks. We are not leaving the bear – it was grumpy and non-cooperative.

  90. Tupper and Gilly
    9:26 pm on August 26th, 2011

Howlers – in regard to your Mom’s jacket and the patch – the patch is an iron on IF and only IF the item the patch is being affixed to can take the heat of a very hot iron. Don’t even try to iron it onto a nylon, leather or man made fabric jacket

If the coat is wool, or some such – first decide on where the patch will look best. DO try it while wearing the coat and looking in a mirror – take it from us, eyeballing it will not work. After seeing where it will look best, mark around the area with a pencil, a seamstress chalk or if necessary, you can use scotch tape on the back of the patch, temporarily tacking it, and then “puff” baby powder at it. When you pick the patch off the jacket, you will have a perfect outline of where you want to put it.

Now, if you CAN iron it on, heat your iron to the wool setting. Iron the spot of the jacket where the patch will go, getting it prepped and warm for the patch. Place the patch on the warm fabric, and cover it with a thin piece of cotton, like a handkerchief or bandana or cotton t shirt. Place the iron on the covered patch and hold for a 20 second count. Do not move the iron around. After 20 seconds, lift the iron and let the patch cool for a minute. Check for adhesion, and if it is stuck, you are done with that part. IF it is not, repeat the iron over the covered patch for another 20 seconds.

Now, for the bad news – iron on patches are not permanent. The iron on stuff is really only good for holding the patch steady while you sew it on. The good news is that you don’t have to be a fancy needleworker to sew it on. Once the iron-on part is stuck, you can just do simple whip stitching around the edge, or even just tack down the corners.

We know you can do it!

Take the patch, and one motor vehicle of any kind.
Proceed carefully to the nearest tailor, seamstress, etc.
Explain exactly where you wish the patch to be placed.

If other folks do happen to join the race festivities with us in Alaska, we can supply some cold weather gear (some, but probably not all). 11:34 pm on August 26th, 2011

Hey, y’all! Mom just got home a little while ago so I’m real late getting on the computer! Nobody was home tonight, so Mom decided to go shopping after work — the book store (of course!) and a new cardigan for work because she blew out the elbow of her old one (she wears it year-round because the library is always cold!) Dad had to go scout a football game and my girl is in Myrtle Beach at a bachlorette party this the weekend — Mom has already texted her to make sure she’s OK. She says it’s real windy, but she’s fine. Mom told her not to be one of those stoopid people who decide to check out the “gnarly” waves the hurricane kicks up! Here we just have a stiff breeze and a lot of clouds, but Mom says we really dodged a bullet. What?! Is there a perp out there???

  106. Snowhook Bella
    11:35 pm on August 26th, 2011

Mushers, like the dogs that pull the sled come in all shapes and sizes. AJ has said on more than one ocassion that he wishes he were my height and weight to lighten the load, and I’ve told him that there are many, many times I wish I had his stride and strength. AJ is tall, but fit and slender. I don’t know of many mushers though that are as tall as him.
