Nantucket

“Ever been?” says Admin.

“Long time ago,” Spence says. “Ran into Ishmael.”

“Ha ha,” says Admin. “Did you see the Dishlickers cook book?”

“It’s great! We’re so grateful we got sent a copy. In case people don’t know, this is another wonderful project of the Plunderers, a – how would you put it?”

“Dynamic.”

“Exactly. A dynamic group of friends here at chetthedog.com. If they were running the country we’d be – what’s the expression?”

“Right side up.”

Today at 4, Cisco Brewery on Nantucket Island: Spencer Quinn, sponsored by Nantucket Bookworks.

Welcome Julian, Hannah, Andrew.

Good morning, y’all! Right side up indeed! And our platform could be: A bone in every home, and a fish in every dish!

Right side up, dynamic. Yeah! We are basking in the compliments.

And Kirby, LOVE that slogan. Better than a chicken in every pot. Hoover wasn’t it?

Indubitably! The whole quote was: A chicken in every pot and a car in every garage. It was his campaign slogan in 1928.

We are trying to control ourselves and just read a little of the Dog Who each night. Love everyting so far, except the cover. Now you know, being an English Shepherd, I love the herding breeds. That being said, I picture Chet being a more burly police/military type, just like Bernie. Maybe somewhat more like BSD. Border Collie look-a-like just doesn’t fit, IMHO.

    Hey!
I’m doing handstands! I’m doing cartwheels! I’m doing double back flips…oh wait. I’m staying right side up because we got a mention and because all you Plunderers and Chet keep me that way.

Right side up and tip top too! Thanks Spence and Admin.

It’s a glorious day here in Chevy Chase. Thank dog, fall has arrived. The low last night was in the 40s and the high today will be in the 60s. What glorious weather. I just love it. Kept the porch door open last night which allowed all the cool air to come in. Of course, mom and dad and grandpa may be freezing their whatsies off, but for me, it is just grand.

So glad the cookbooks arrived yesterday for Barb and Maggie (and Macy too). I was getting a little worried about TMG, but they have appeared to have been foiled again.

The last of the cookbooks got mailed yesterday –the final one to Dawson, first class, relatively plain envelope, with stamps and not a postage meter slip. I did have some trouble filling out that d**m customs form though; it really is not very dog friendly, especially for those of us who are large pawwed. Hope it gets there sometime this century.

Going walkies soon, so BBL .

    Wookie

P.S. We have picked up the pace a little on the book, we are up to Chapter 15 now. May accelerate a little more over the weekend too. It is sooooo good!

    Good Morning Kirby and B&M:

    Like the slogan!

What a beautiful, crisp, sunny day here in Westchester! I love this kind of weather!!

Masquers: The trees are just changing a bit in some places. Hopefully, when our colors are in full bloom, the Prof and I can walk the Bear Mountain Bridge and take some photos!
Question…Would you know anything about the weather in Salt Lake City at the end of October? The Prof will be there for a conference 10/24 thru 10/28, and I need to know what to pack for him. I will miss him during this time. Wish my Kat Kelly was still here to keep me company….

Hi, Bear: Unfortunately, my transition date has been pushed back to October 10th. I think my boss is in denial…

    Good Friday Mroning to ALL!!!!!

Wookie: Thank you for the special attention. I forgot about the nuisance customs form. The things to know about that is that the item is never worth over $75. and that it is a gift. Otherwise, customs thinks they should be paid. I actually send you a card with the check yesterday. Thought I’d done it the day before but there it was in my bag when I went to work in the morning. We’ll see whose arrives first. One would think it would be the simple envelope.

    Good morning all,
I have a moment to catch up before I leave for the church where the TOGA is being held.

Well if we get to rule the world, or the USA, we will have to remember that Rio is the supreme commander. Although Alice will probably complain a bit. She likes to think her beautiful fluffy tail makes her special.

    Spencer!… Don’t fall off the ferry on the way back from the Brewery. I used to know a poem about Nantucket that went something like this;

There once was a man from Nantucket
Who kept all his cash in a bucket.
    But his daughter, named Nan,
    Ran away with a man
And as for the bucket, Nantucket. …snort!…There have been other versions of this over the years…heh!

Nantucket…Mom has read history books about it and watched programs on the history channel about it. That is where the whaling ship sailed from that was sunk by a whale, and Melville got the idea for Moby Dick from that true story.

Now is a really good time to thank those of you who got my photo into the cookbook. Thank You!

  41. Kirby T. Penworthy
    1:16 pm on September 16th, 2011

Hey, y’all! Mom and Maggie are back. Mom is properly groomed, but Maggie’s hair is still missing. Turns out the Frontline isn’t working quite as well as it should (I think we’ve discussed this before) and Maggie’s allergic to flea bites. So she got a steriod shot and now she’s taking the same flea pills that I am, and Mom has to wash/powder everything with borax to get rid of all the fleas.

Mom loved the cartoon. But Bee, Mom’s nicer. She’s even been known to tell people if they can’t renew something because someone’s waiting for it, that if they want they can keep the item and just pay the fine for a few days. (It’s only 20 cents a day for a book — even if you keep it an extra week, it’s a lot less than going out and buying it!)

  42. B.Stover
    1:28 pm on September 16th, 2011

Kirby: I know your mom is nicer. So is my brother who was a school librarian before he retired.

The first sentence of Melville’s Moby-Dick is “Call me Ishmael.” Whenever I see that name I think of the novel rather than the bibical story.

  43. BearSpiritDog
    1:56 pm on September 16th, 2011

Hey! I remember Ishmael. Isn’t that G&BooBear’s new friend?

Kirby: Our library cleverly doesn’t charge late fees. Of course the tardy ones feel guilty and slip a extra donation into the box to make up for it. So the library comes out ahead.

  44. Kirby T. Penworthy
    1:58 pm on September 16th, 2011

Bee: I’m glad your brother is a good guy. School librarians absolutely should be nice — mean ones turn kids off to reading!

One of the things they discussed at the conference Mom went to on Wednesday was Accelerated Reading and Lexile scores. Have any of you had to deal with those? Mom had a run-in with my girl’s middle school principal because my girl flunked reading one semester. Turns out she didn’t make her quota of points because towards the end of the semester she decided to read “Pride and Prejudice” — heavy reading for an eighth-grader! — and hadn’t finished in time to take the test. As she put it, if she had read a bunch of “baby books,” she would have had more than enough points. But since she was reading something challenging, she fell short. She told Mom at the time, “I used to love reading, but I don’t anymore.” It just about broke Mom’s heart. It took my girl years to recover from that. The good news is that she’s back to reading again, and even has her boyfriend reading for pleasure, too! (His mom was astonished when she walked in the room and found the two of them reading books!!!)

Melanie. You should invite all the Plunderers for a visit. That way you’ll have a reason to visit Mr. Melville’s house. Mom & Dad mostly go to Washington monuments when friends visit. Although they always like to take me to the Tidal Basin in Spring for the cherry blossoms. Lots of fun, pink snow and everyone stops to pet me. Lots of out of town people hug me because they left their dogs at home and miss them. I say just let us ride shotgun and we should come along on all family vacations. Wookie the tour guide

It isn’t that I dislike Suzie the woman/character. (I do agree with Rio that her reaction to Anya is completely silly.) It is that she gets in the way of the partnership of Chet and Bernie. Siber-H: You are an expert in big projects; your mother shouldn’t question if a little bit of stucco needs to be sacrificed for the long term vision of the project.

Melanie: Cyber Dogmother—I love it. I can’t wait to smell puppy breath and give puppy tummies…

Rio: I was wondering the same thing about CHarris and the pugpy temptation. I could not resist.

Rose: Utah is a beautiful place. I hope the professor has a great time.

Rose: I won’t be traveling alone. I will have my four-legged mama, Luna with me. I worry about her, you see and I don’t like to leave her alone. I hope you don’t mind if she comes with me—she’s bigger than me, but she will hardly take up any room at all. Have I mentioned that I’m smart enough to answer to my name as well as my mama’s name?—Like I said, I don’t like her to ever be alone.

The purpose of this particular project is to have FUN. It isn’t one I can nap in. Yes, most Huskies dig.

Huskies dig for the fun of it, to make a nice place for a serious nap, to keep cooler in the summer, and for warmth in the snow in the winter.
Oh, I almost forgot…there are Huskies who will dig to escape to get out in the world and have a great adventure. I don’t do that.

Siber-H: We have quite a few diggers in the kennel. Take Charlotte, for instance—that little girl started digging a hole this week, now about knee deep that she’s been storing her portion of a moose inside.

Melanie: I love a good pair of socks. When I landed my first professional job, Bev, my mother said if I had to dress like I grown up, I should at least have fun socks.

BSD: I love those pink little paws.

And sorry to disagree with anyone but we like Suzie. There is no reason Bernie has to be sad and lonely and “relationship-less” to be a good detective. Suzie is goodhearted and likes Chet and that is good enough for us. As far as her reaction of Anya, we haven’t gotten that far (because we are trying to stretch it out) but if you remember, Bernie didn’t tell her what he was doing on the assingment. If he had been more open about it she probably would have been less concerned. Per Barb, who as a woman has had a little experience in these matters, if a guy is hiding something there might be a good reason for it. And that is all we are going to say about that!

Hello Everybody! We have been sitting around idle but couldn’t post; the reason being that it is Oley Fair time. Mom & Pop are over there every evening and Mom turns the computer off before she goes, and won’t let us in the house to turn it on. The fair is the biggest event of the year here. People come from all over, some as far away as California. But do you think we are ever taken to the fair? No !!! We have never been there. And its a hop-step away. Mom says there are lots of farm animals there and thats the reason we are not. We don’t get it.

Suzie…how can anyone who loves Chet and Bernie not love love love Suzie? Like Dawson says, without Suzie, Chet would have been a goner…maybe many times over. And who doesn’t love someone who carries cookies in their car? We ask you.

Siber, we are so excited to see pictures of your construction project in progress. It sounds great. You are inspiring us to get back to work ourselves.

Stover, why ask why. We sibes are born to dig. Thats the thing about us. You just never know when you need an escape plan, or a convenient place to stash a bone, or cookies, or maybe a dead groundhog or two. Not to mention alternate sleeping arrangements.

Melanie, great sox! Our mom says to tell you that while some women are clothes horses (what does that mean? …our horses never wear any clothes), and some love to buy shoes, and some love to buy purses, Mom lives to buy sox. She can never have too many. Fat sox, thin sox, high sox, short sox, fluffy sox, wooly sox…well you get the point.

This book changed our opinion if Susie. In the previous books, we could take her or leave her. This one developed her character more.

Still absolutely HATE the cover art. Mom would find her mind picture of Chet changing back and forth between a border collie mix (not near big or intimidating enough) and her long time mind picture of a large GSD type. And Susie should not have been on the cover!!

The poor garden is now stripped. Sign, couldn’t plant until the middle of June and having to bring everything in now. The beans and the tomatoes still have flowers on them. Jeez .. .

8 green tomatoes (lots of others that were less than 1/2 inch round), so it will be Fried Green Tomatoes tomorrow! Yummers . .

Thank you for admiring my sox. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. . .
Two years ago I bought black sox. Then Zoë and Dan bought a different size black sox. So we were always looking in each others laundry pile. Last year I bought navy blue sox. Great in the sun, but that was the only time I could see which ones were blue or black.

More to Rio: During 2010 when W.L. was on the run, I recieved emails and comments on Snowhook’s blog of support from all over the world—it meant the world to me especially as I felt helpless in the effort, stuck at home as I was. So, those many months ago when comments appeared on the blog by a certain pug, Staff, Wookie and others it felt as an extension of the support from the year before—and odd as it sounds, visiting Chet’s for the first time felt like a reunion of long time friends.

The relationship between Archie and Wolfe (hey, I wonder if that’s where I got my name?) was complex and wonderful.

I like Susie because she reminds me of mom. A little insecure but extremely loyal. I would not want to see her role become any more prominent, but the Dog Who was just about right. Having said that, we wish that we were able to spend more time with Chet and Bernie together.

I am going to go out on a limb here (don’t worry, if I fall then I can Blur myself to safety) and suggest that too much Susie means too little of our favorite duo.

I also think that Chet should ride shotgun all the time. After all, he is the partner, not Susie.
