Naming Names
“Here’s something that occurred to me last night,” says Admin. “Maybe a little late.”
“Shoot,” says Spence.
Uh-oh. Gunplay involving those two? Not something that could end well.
“It’s about Bernie’s name,” Admin says.
Bernie’s name? Bernie’s name is Bernie, the best human name out there. I also like the name Myron. As for names in the nation within: Chet! Here’s a crazy thing: once we met this human who claimed he was named Chet, too. Was that confusing or what? He turned out to own a bar down in a town called Dirty Springs that I never want to see again. Talk about gunplay!
“What about it?” says Spence.
“Well,” Admin says, “there’s that famous breed of rescuers called the St. Bernard. Just wondered if there’s a connection.”
Spence smiles a little smile, says nothing.
I wait for more, but there is no more. These guys! But no guns are coming out, so it could be a lot worse.
Welcome Isabel.
And here’s hoping Rio and Co. are all right. To Melanie: amazing detection on those covers; totally news to us.

Laughing out loud. Now I have to check out the origin of the name St. Bernard. (And, Chet, why Myron??)
8:48 am on March 5th, 2011
My brother and sister-in-law are going to the Tigers/Jays game today in Dunedin, Florida.
9:00 am on March 5th, 2011
Well, we seem to be back in business this morning. Paws crossed here.
Read last night’s posts, and we thought Staff/Alice Magnolia (love that name)/, and Alice did a nice prayer for Rio and Co.
Not sure what was wrong with our computer, but maybe Molly’ Mom can offer up an opinion. We thought it was the key board because we could not type, but the mouse worked. We took the key board to the neighbor’s and it worked there. We also brought a keyboard home from their house and it would not work. When we plugged the connection in to the tower, the lights would instantly flash and then go off. Same for the borrowed key board. Tried it over and over. This morning, turned it on and viola! (as said in Ingrid books) light was on and it worked.
Now we are going to disconnect this borrowed key board and plug ours back in. Hopefully, will be back soon. If not, you know why!

B&M: Sounds like a technological dilemma…or something from the X-Files. Good luck!
9:16 am on March 5th, 2011
What a great way to start the morning! Laughing . . .
Names . . . YSAS has four names. (Last grandson of a Southern family. Notice he goes by his Northern name. Except for Riö. Riö is the only one allowed to call YSAS by his first name.)
He never had a nickname. Ever. When he was around 3 years of age he discovered that Zoë’s “growing up last name” was the same as his and he THREW a FIT! “That’s MY name, not yours!”
You’re welcome on the research Chet!
9:16 am on March 5th, 2011
And Staff or Alice, which ever you were, that was an awesome prayer.
9:27 am on March 5th, 2011
We meant to include Abbie in there, too. Not Alice twice! Rio would have jumped on that!
9:40 am on March 5th, 2011
The cover from DOI spoke to mom at the bookstore. She finally gave in, made the purchase, and fell in love immediately. That cover is awesome. It is still our favorite. Mostly because it changed our life.
9:46 am on March 5th, 2011
Hmmmmm………
I wonder if Bernie’s last name is a deliberate oxymoron?
Must be.
Pondering…..
9:50 am on March 5th, 2011
Wölife, while you’re pondering . . .
This was on Spence’s facebook. We’ve added it to our.
We want Spring, Bubbles and a band in the play yard!

Barb and MagPie, did you ever figure out what was wrong?
10:01 am on March 5th, 2011
Nope! It must be magic!
Barb can’t remember where she heard of DOI. She thinks she read a review somewhere, because she requested the book on a library loan to start with, then bought it later. You would think for such a life changing event she would have better recall!
10:07 am on March 5th, 2011
I found DOI and loved the idea. Read a couple of pages and bought it. Laughed hysterically, read out loud to Zoë. She read it. Dan read it. We bought another copy for our neighbor!
10:18 am on March 5th, 2011
We absolutely loved, loved, loved ‘Tea and Dog Biscuits’!
Best book we’ve read since TFAT!
It’s the true story about an English couple who repaid a cosmic debt by fostering and finding homes for German Shepherds. A wonderfully funny (and touching) story about the Nation within.
10:27 am on March 5th, 2011
Mom found DOI at the library of course (notoriously cheap, remember). She did not actually pay for the books until she went to meet Spence in Houston and wanted to get them all signed. With the proper motivation she will buy a book.
Melanie, thanks so much for the dogpark concert. It made me want to get out and
sniff some buttsmake some new friends, but we are having a cold snap today. Highs around 50 with a wind chill of 35.I have to imagine that when A Certain Pug sees today’s post he will be skipping, skipping. (Has anyone else tried to visualize that. We can’t and we have a pretty good imagination).
Barb, it sounds like a short to me. Paws crossed for continuing keyboarding ability.
10:27 am on March 5th, 2011
That is cool!! Joe West and the Tree Ringers are the new hippies. And I want a bubble maker like that.
10:29 am on March 5th, 2011
Would Bernie be considered shambling? That is how mom thinks of him.
10:35 am on March 5th, 2011
Hi Macy. I’m pondering the adjective “shambling” for Bernie…I don’t know. Can you describe what you mean?
Wolfie: I read the excerpt for Tea and Dog Biscuits on Amazon and downloaded it to my Kindle but haven’t gotten to it yet. Thanks for the recommendation.
10:45 am on March 5th, 2011
We loved the concert, too!
It made our hearts happy.
11:00 am on March 5th, 2011
Melanie: Hat tip for the great detection. I love the video. I have started watching the Boardwalk Empire with McKey Carpenter although I haven’t spotted him yet. I remember you saying that he is in a scene where a pregnant girl is going to see the doctor and he is in the background. Do you know the name of the episode? I hope it isn’t in one I missed as I am starting mid-season.
Staff gave me her copy of Dog On It on one of my visits to the lower 48. She also turned me on to the blog. And she said a good prayer for Rio and friend last night. Thank you. I’m reading another book taken from Staff’s bookshelf, The Penguin Who Knew Too Much, by Donna Andrews. 🙂
11:05 am on March 5th, 2011
We miss you, Rio!!! We are praying for healing for both you and Wookie.
Wonderful prayer last night, Alice.
11:08 am on March 5th, 2011
Hmm, I don’t know if I can put shambling into words. It is kind of a bear-like slightly hunched over walk. That is about as close as I can get it.
Good Morning Sir Wooks, whenever you may see this. *nose bump*
11:11 am on March 5th, 2011
Melanie, we just made ourselves giggle thinking of you and the pack showing up at a dog park. Com-moootion!
11:18 am on March 5th, 2011
Macy, Remember, Suzie called Bernie shambling when she first met him and wrote an article where she mentioned hime. Must have been in THAT. He was miffed!
11:25 am on March 5th, 2011
Thank you Staff & Co. for that wonderful prayer for Rio & his friend. Rio & Co.: Have a great time and get some rest!
11:49 am on March 5th, 2011
St. Bernard part one: The earlies written records of the breed are by monks at the Great St. Bernard Pass in Switzerland (Mont Blanc and Monte Rosa–pass that connects Switzerland and Italy) in 1707. There are earlier drawings and paintings.
It is believed to be a Molosser breed (mastiff-type; so are Newfs but Melanie can say if this is not correct) from an ancient Greek shepherd dog…now an extinct breed…of the Molossis people in the mountainous regions of northwest Ancient Greece.
It is mentioned by Aristotle in History of Animals and by Virgil in the Georgics: “Never with them on guard need you fear for your stalls a midnight thief or onslaught of wolves or Iberian brigands at your back” (III, 404).
There is a Roman copy of an ancient Greek bronze sculpture of this type of dog at the British Museum called the Jennings Dog (named after someone who owned the sculpture). Here’s a link to a picture of that sculpture.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Molossian_Hound,_British_Museum.jpg
12:34 pm on March 5th, 2011
St. Bernard part two: Many of the St. Bernards used for breeding were killed during the severe winters of 1816 to 1817 while performing rescues. To preserve the breed they were crossbred with Newfoundlands (also possibly with the Tibetan Mastiff and Great Danes). The name became widespread in the 19th century. Before that they were often referred to as Alpinemastiff.
They were named after St. Bernard of Menthon (923-1008) who founded the hospices that bear his name. Here is a link about him:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernard_of_Menthon
According to dogbreedinfo.com the St. Bernard is
large, strong and muscular
gentle, friendly, patient and loyal
highly intelligent
a good watch dog
has a highly developed sense of smell and hearing
seems to have a sixth sense about impending danger
Whenever I think of a St. Bernard I remember the tv series Topper. (This has been fun.)
1:08 pm on March 5th, 2011
Maggie Magnolia – Mom has no idea when computer parts and pieces stop working. She reboots to get everything off to a clean start, which is a good thing to do frequently anyway.
1:23 pm on March 5th, 2011
B.Stover: Yes, the breeds of Newfoundland and St. Bernie ( 🙂 ) have been “aligned” more than once. Both breeds have been threatened with extinction.
Dawson: That episode you are remember is from “Royal Pains”. He is in the background (not near the camera) several times in BE, but the scene he is seen (snicker) in . . . He’s one of several men chasing one of the leads down an alley.
Macy: Hi to you. I think The Pack would totally enjoy
taking over a dog parkmeeting new friends.Barb & MagPie, I haven’t forgotten the first in the Donna Andrews series. It’s coming your way as soon as I get it packaged and at the Post Office!
1:24 pm on March 5th, 2011
What traits does Bernie share with the St. Bernard? I think of Bernie as a very humane person…with a few weaknesses.
1:27 pm on March 5th, 2011
St. Bernard’s shamble when they walk.
1:32 pm on March 5th, 2011
Gracie, Patsy and I went on a road trip this morning. Over to the Gluten Free Baker person. Yumm.
Stopped at the Tractor Store, they didn’t have what I wanted but they did have dried duck treats. Those went over really well!
Now I like to travel around and on one of the smaller roads I found tree damage but it wasn’t from beavers.
BEAR! Around 2 miles away from us.
It was with the camera phone, so I don’t know how great the pic will be.
1:36 pm on March 5th, 2011
How tall would that bear have to be? Yikes!
St. Bernard’s shamble…so does Bernie according to Suzie. Should we believe that? St. B’s are also prone to wobbler’s disease. I don’t think Bernie is…
1:53 pm on March 5th, 2011
The snow has melted a bit. Like a foot or two. But where Black bears (like we have here) stand up they are really tall.
I just ordered a grow light system for Barb’s seeds.
2:14 pm on March 5th, 2011
Wow!
Will the tree survive? Did the bear eat the bark or was it scratching for bugs?
2:19 pm on March 5th, 2011
Hey Dawson, I don’t know. AND did not stick around in case the bear came back.
You know the joke, where the bears are looking at the van or camper saying “I love the creamy center”?
2:29 pm on March 5th, 2011
Melanie: Yes, the creamy center…I wouldn’t stick around either!
2:35 pm on March 5th, 2011
The dog park video made our hearts happy, too. (Loved that saying so we are copying it.) This past week, Mom went to our favorite pet food store PtsMrt and a man was there with his St.Bernard. Mom said that she was really, really pretty and friendly. She didn’t mind all the attention she was getting from everyone. Mom really, really wants a big dog, but Dad says no since Mom has all that cat rescue. We may be getting a blind cat brother. His owner died and they are looking for a new home for him. Mom volunteered, but relatives may take him instead. Mom would LOVE to see Melanie’s pack.
About Bernie “shambling”…..we don’t see it. Perhaps because we picture him as a younger Tom Selleck and there was no shambling in that picture. And we don’t see Chet as a Border Collie either. He’s a much bigger dog with German Shepherd type blood in his mix. Just our thoughts……..
We know Mom is going to HATE the movie whenever they make it. It can’t live up to our imaginations.
2:41 pm on March 5th, 2011
Wolfie, Mom bought Tea and Dog Biscuits on her Kindle, but has not read it yet. She’ll put it at the top of her “to read” list since you liked it so much.
3:04 pm on March 5th, 2011
Hi everyone. I thought the prayer last night was truly awesome. And Macy — thanks for the nose bump and back at you. I’m feeling really good today. Had a great walk this morning with mom and dad and am moving around the best I have in quite a while. It’s hard to believe what I can do today given what I was like on Wedsnesday. The oncologist had told my mom and dad that this was going to be a roller coaster ride and I think she was right, but being on the upswing right now is very nice. BTW, if Rio and his friend do not make it back tomorrow, I may just have to go after them in the Wookiemobile. Wookie
3:15 pm on March 5th, 2011
Bee, Gus and Boo Bear, I’m certain you will fight it delightful. What I find so appealing is the quality of Barrie and Dorothy’s characters. They are good, solid decent people trying to do the right thing. Just like us.
Hey, I just realized who Barrie’s writing style reminds me of. James Herriot.
And I am a huge James Herriot fan. And I bet I’m not the only one, either.
3:18 pm on March 5th, 2011
I suggest that if a C&B movie comes out we have to think of it as a different medium. We have to try to be open minded and give it a chance. There’s a movie version of Woolf’s To The Lighthouse that, of course, can’t really “be” the same. It would be impossible in film to depict the indirect interior monologue that makes up the novel. However, it’s good as a movie version of the novel. It has excellent actors and acting.
3:20 pm on March 5th, 2011
I love All Creatures Great and Small…book version and tv series.
3:24 pm on March 5th, 2011
Happy today. I was looking at the weather for next week and we are to be in positive numbers all week (+10 to +15). It has been getting down to -30 and -40 at night but next week it is only to be -20. So I think we are finally on the downside of winter. How about you, Dawson?
Thanks for the good report , Wookie… and I’m sending positive thoughts to Rio & Co.
3:26 pm on March 5th, 2011
Wookie, I am so glad that you are having a good day!
You know, somehow I don’t think Rio is camping right now. I am worried.
The prayer last night was awesome.
I hope nobody minds if I send up another prayer:
Lord of all creation, you are infinitely boundless in the blessings you have provided us. We thank you for these blessings, each and every one.
Today we ask you to heal the hearts of Rio and his friend. We ask you to help them find calm in the wake of their personal storm, and we ask you to guide them back to peace. We ask you to release them from this burden of sorrow and anger.
Amen.
3:45 pm on March 5th, 2011
Amen
Nice prayer Wolfie.
We are very glad to hear Wookie is feeling tip top. You are in our thoughts, big guy.
I am also worried. Rio hates fresh air and cold weather. Rio going camping would be like me saying I was off to visit New York City.
3:49 pm on March 5th, 2011
Amen . . .
Now I’m off to see if I can find a youtube on pugs camping.
3:53 pm on March 5th, 2011
C.Harris: Temps have been -20 overnight and up to -5 during the day. Today though it is +10 degrees. I’m going to Vancouver on Monday and hoping the car will start after being left unplugged at the airport for 5 days. The temperatures are supposed to be above normal while I’m gone (the tease) and then back to half frigid by the time I get back (the reality).
3:54 pm on March 5th, 2011
Rocky the Undercover squirrel sent me the following link . . .

Dawson, I hope you are going somewhere for fun and not work.
4:00 pm on March 5th, 2011
Melanie, that was very cute.
4:01 pm on March 5th, 2011
YSAS has gone to Boston to see his SO in “The House of Yes”. I wish I could be there. He is also going to Faneuil Hall Marketplace. Yumm.
Many really cool shops and places to eat. I’m drooling.
He asked what type of flowers to take to SO and I suggested Iris. So Spring like. . .
4:03 pm on March 5th, 2011
Hi Wölfie! It’s supposed to be warm here . . . But with no sun and rain, the 50 degrees feels cold and wet.
4:19 pm on March 5th, 2011
Update on Wolfie’s boys:
From what we can tell, Cody is doing well. He has been submitting job applications and will take the California high school equivilency test on June 19.
He is getting his learner’s permit on Tuesday. According to his spokesman, Travis, Cody is starting to take responsibility for his actions, and has chosen to grow from this experience. He has seen the doctor and changed his medication, and has gone to counseling almost every week.
We don’t hear as much about Chad. He is living with his 14 yo girlfriend and is still upset with us. His girlfriend is dropping out of school so that she can be home schooled. I havent seen his name in the paper so that is a good thing.
I miss them. Not the craziness, But I miss them.
4:20 pm on March 5th, 2011
Wookie, Glad you are feeling better today, and Wolfie, thank you for another nice, thoughtful prayer.
Barb just started watching a live stream of an eagle nest in Decorah, IA. One of her friends said the grade school kids are watching it every day. She was surprised they were nesting this early – it takes 35 days for eggs to hatch, but still we thought it would be late April or May. Also, looked up incubation info, and it said it is common for the first hatchling to kill the 2nd, especially if the first is a female chick, which will be larger. Oh boy, hope the kiddies don’t watch that!
4:23 pm on March 5th, 2011
Is the House of Yes a play?
And how are the wedding preparations coming along? Are they still certain that they don’t want us to throw them a wedding? Are they not interested in salmon wedding cake, lol?
4:34 pm on March 5th, 2011
Oh! I just read that the Iditarod Race started today! Siber must be glued to his computer right about now!
4:37 pm on March 5th, 2011
Melanie: I’m sure Rio is helping his friend set up the tent, just like that little pug did. I can hear Home on the Range being played on the harmonica.
Wookie: Glad you’re having a tip-top day. You might be called upon to rescue Rio.
Wolfie: Thanks for the up-date on your guys. I’m glad the craziness is out of your life. With time and reflection, I’m hopeful your guys will come back into your life.
4:38 pm on March 5th, 2011
The best thing we like about this blog is that we can talk to people all over the world, each with their own point of view, taste and opinion. And yet, with all the diversity, there has been friendship, support and true caring.
We try very hard not to think less of anyone if their tastes are different from ours. Many times, our opinions have been changed by exposure….Melanie knows how we have always felt about Poodles, until we met the wonderful MollyPop, Mollie, Jasper and others on this very blog. And we know that every single one of us on the blog has tried new things, read new books, watched new shows because of the suggestions of others.
We truly hope Rio will come back soon, and understand that NO ONE here thinks he is foolish or, in his words, an idiot.
We think he is an adorably cute curmudgeon who loves to tease and grumble. And we think that given time to heal and work thru the grief that has gripped his heart, he will understand that we do truly care for him and about him. And we miss his snorts.
Hoping the water of the river is washing your tears away little dog, and hope you come home soon.
4:40 pm on March 5th, 2011
Wookie – If you’re firing up the Wookiemobile to go find Rio, I’m going with you
4:43 pm on March 5th, 2011
Wooks – If Rio’s friend has taken her cell phone with them. I’ll GPS it and we’ll be there in no time.
4:48 pm on March 5th, 2011
Yes! Let’s go find Rio and bring him back to the blog.
My blurring capabilities do have include GPS, although I am working on an upgrade for v2.
4:49 pm on March 5th, 2011
Not. Do NOT include GPS. Tripped by the ipaw again,
4:53 pm on March 5th, 2011
Wolfie – pack a lunch, and bring some snacks for Rio – you know how he does love his snacks!
4:54 pm on March 5th, 2011
Great posts…good news Wookie and Wolfie. The video was funny Melanie. The pug was certainly helping.
I hope Rio and his friend are feeling better and it’s a good idea for Wookie and Mollypop to go check. Life is too short to let sadness overpower you. Plunder on…
4:54 pm on March 5th, 2011
That’s okay Wolfie – Come with us. I can handle the GPS and you can blurr as needed. The Wookster is a good driver.
5:02 pm on March 5th, 2011
We could send mass emails too….and tell him that Chet mentioned him too.
5:07 pm on March 5th, 2011
Wolfie, Thank you for the update. It seems like Cody is doing better than Chad at this point, but they each will need to move at their own pace and it will take time. Tell Mary to hang in there!
5:20 pm on March 5th, 2011
Barb said she could let me go along too, if you want to swing thru northern Illinois and pick me up! I have a lot of SAR dogs in my back ground so I am a pretty good tracker.
Even though I am a cousin of the Border Collie, I do not picture Chet as a B C. He has to have some shepherd blood or some Malinois, or Tervuren mixed in there. Go Stover!
5:24 pm on March 5th, 2011
Maybe we should bring Siber H also. He is good at snow and wilderness.
5:26 pm on March 5th, 2011
Okay – Maggie Magnolia, we can pick you up. Wolfie will see about Siber-H. We will need some treats and chew strips.
5:27 pm on March 5th, 2011
OPERATION: RESCUE RIO
PLAN FORMULATED @ 1425 PST.
Objective:
To save Commnader Rio and Friend from frostbite. It may be frostbite of the heart and it may be frostbite of the (ahem) tender bits.
5:29 pm on March 5th, 2011
OPERATION: RESCUE RIO
Equipment needed:
Wookiemobile
Food
Gas
GPS
Treats
Chicken and duck jerky
Possibly some other stuff
5:32 pm on March 5th, 2011
OPERATION: RESCUE RIO
Decoder Device. I wonder if Rio has a decoder device turned on?
Crap. That would be useful.
5:36 pm on March 5th, 2011
I’m in! I’ll be giving up the Iditarod, but, hey, Rio is an old pal of mine.
5:40 pm on March 5th, 2011
You should probably bring bacon because Rio likes that. I can make some pies…how about apple….if Wolfie could blurr over here to Michigan to pick them up. It’s snowing here after raining all day so dress warm.
5:41 pm on March 5th, 2011
Hey Wölfie, Blur by and pick up some freeze dried duck meat!
5:43 pm on March 5th, 2011
Siber-H – Bring your cell phone. Your Mom will give you the Iditatrod updates.
5:43 pm on March 5th, 2011
Do you think we can come along – it may be enough to coax Rio out of the wilderness if he thinks he might get a chance to chase us..
5:57 pm on March 5th, 2011
us, too!! The more kats, the more Rio will think he needs to get back in charge! Can’t you just hear him? “Darn kats, think they know how to run a mission, heh, snort?”
5:57 pm on March 5th, 2011
Will do Molly!!
uh, guys, I don’t think we need to start loooking for Rio in the wilderness. He would not hightail it to the territory ahead like I would. I can picture him setting at some sidewalk cafe in someplace warm like Austin, TX….soaking up the university culture, and chatting up the locals, and making new friends. Crap, he might not even be missing us.
6:00 pm on March 5th, 2011
That’s usually true, SiberH. But Rio is not himself right now. He could very well be “out in the cold”.
6:02 pm on March 5th, 2011
Climb aboard, Herbals. We may need some magic so bring your wizard stuff!
6:04 pm on March 5th, 2011
When everything calms down, I think we should elect Rio as the
Mayor of Plunderville!!!
6:07 pm on March 5th, 2011
Where’s Macy? She should be going too.
6:07 pm on March 5th, 2011
Okay then, I’m always looking for any excuse to go to the wilderness. I’ll blaze the way and Maggie can do the actual Search and Rescue.
6:11 pm on March 5th, 2011
Wow Herbs, that is very
magnamoniousbig of you to offer your very hides to the mission. Of course, The Pug in Question cannot climb trees. We will offer good wishes to all involved, plus back-up supplies if needed, since we are *close* to Colorado.6:16 pm on March 5th, 2011
If members of the Nation ever want to chill out, Austin is a good place to do it. If you want to succeed in business in Austin, you had better be dog friendly. Every little coffee shop and bookstore has a few tables or benches outside so that Fur & Friends can hang out together. Even some “hitching posts” for the people that need to run in someplace quickly, like the dry cleaners.
6:17 pm on March 5th, 2011
Uh, thanks for the invite, but it is getting a little crowded in the Wookie Mobile, so we will stand by for updates.
6:20 pm on March 5th, 2011
Hey Dawson, got any beaver tail that we could take for treats? I also have a supply of dried rat jerkey. It’s pretty tasty, once you cultivate a taste for it.
This is developing into a PARTY!
6:21 pm on March 5th, 2011
Another good reason to avoid Dallas. The mayor resigned to run for congress and the interim mayor is the peabrain who gave Michael Vick the key to the city during Super Bowl week. The residents have demanded that the lock be changed.
6:29 pm on March 5th, 2011
The Pack is coming. They aren’t St. Bernie’s but they can rescue anyone out of the water!
6:33 pm on March 5th, 2011
Wait, they’ve decided to take the van because they wouldn’t fit in the Wöökiemobile and Mattie wants to drive, but Mac says that the guy always drives, and then Mattie said guys always get lost because they don’t ask for directions and Mac said that Christopher Columbus didn’t ask for directions and Mattie said yea, well he didn’t end up where he was headed did he?
Hmmm. I think I’m going to have to borrow my nephew’s Garmin.
6:36 pm on March 5th, 2011
Melanie – Very good, because I won’t go into water, webbed feet or not, and Siber-H feels the same. We have to be prepared for a possible water rescue. Good work!

Beavertail!
You guys are in luck because it just so happens to be the weekend of the Trapper’s Rendezvous and beavertails abound. I missed the dog pull this morning (darn!)and the squirrel skinning this afternoon (thank dog!).
A Question: Basil and Sage are herbals but Gus and Boobear are plain old cats, aren’t they?
7:29 pm on March 5th, 2011
Excuse us!!! Plain old? Believe we are insulted!!! There is nothing plain or old about us. Rio just doesn’t like us a whole lot so he always calls us old farts. But we still think he needs to come back. We don’t like to see anyone sad or lonely.

Okay, the Pack has started out. The GPS is in the van, and Rosalyn is in charge of that. Ellie decided to stay home, Patsy and Katy piled a bunch of food in, Franklin is going where ever Katy and Grace are going. Grace is riding in between the two front seats, Mattie is driving and Mac is riding shotgun.
Patsy has the cellphone. I have the land phone next to my bed.
I plugged in Wöökie’s house, so if the Wöökiemobile has already left by the time they get there, DebbieLM would you please plug in the next stop?
Dog willing and the creek don’t rise, they’ll be there soon.

Oops!
No offense intended. Plain…obviously Not! Old…well, be honest.

I need Molly to come get me. I’d ask the Newfs to swing by but Melanie said that they might think I was a squeaky toy.
8:12 pm on March 5th, 2011
I’m laughing at Sam as a squeaky toy! I have four pies ready.
8:17 pm on March 5th, 2011
Well, it sounds like things are coming together very nicely now. Mollypop and I will pick up Magpie and SiberH and all the kats. Wolfie, can you blur up to Dawsons to get the dried beavertail, and to Stovers to get the bacon and apple pie, and then we can rendezvous along the way with you and the Newf pack. Mission planning is not my strength (that is usually Commander Rio’ s role) but I will try my best with assistance from Wolfie, because this is so critical. Also, we need someone personing mission control for backup; I think that should be Stover. Everybody ready for the mission. — bark or meow yes if you are! Woof! Wookie

8:44 pm on March 5th, 2011
Okay, I’m on backup mission control.
8:54 pm on March 5th, 2011
Okay, guys, I guess we should start looking in Denver or somewhere in the Rocky Mountains or at some college in Texas.
9:03 pm on March 5th, 2011
Well, I blurred over and picked up the beavertail and jerky from above, and then picked up three pies from Stover.
I know, I know, there were FOUR pies. But I took a tiny taste to make sure Bee didn’t goof up the recipe, and then a bigger taste, and before I knew it, I was blurring and burping all over the place.
Excellent pie, by the way, Bee. As Melanie would say, Yumm.
9:05 pm on March 5th, 2011
Okay, I am getting close to the mile high city.
Mission Control, do we have a reading of the WM and Van?
Over,
9:07 pm on March 5th, 2011
Oh, and by the way, Gus and BooBear, you are very special Kats.
Fruit and veggie Kats.
How so>
AsparaGUS and Boo Berry,
Not plain old kats in the least.
9:09 pm on March 5th, 2011
Wolf! for yes!
9:11 pm on March 5th, 2011
The WM and van are running per schedule. And I made that fourth pie for you Wolfie.
9:23 pm on March 5th, 2011
Bee…thank you for the pie. I was feeling a little guilty.
10-4 on the update
9:29 pm on March 5th, 2011
Dang that Basil – he is SUCH a diva….he has spent all this time packing his catnip mousies, his extra collar, and some chicken flavor crunchies.
Ok – so we are outside, ready and waiting…who is picking us up? Newfs in a van or WookieMobile?
Basil would prefer not to get slobbered on…told ya…diva….
9:34 pm on March 5th, 2011
I’m putting backup mission control on automatic pilot. Bark or meow if you need anything. Good night all.
9:38 pm on March 5th, 2011
I’m on the GPS trying to pick up a ping and I have two maps – Google and Mapquest. Wookie is a very good driver. I think he takes the family car out more than they know about.
9:47 pm on March 5th, 2011
Once we met up, I vote that we hunker down for the night in a Marriott. (They are dog friendly. And hopefully Kat friendly too, I hope that somebody remembered to grab a credit card! Room service isn’t exactly cheap.
9:51 pm on March 5th, 2011
Yes, woof, yes. I am packed and ready to go. No one requested my special homemade rat jerky, but I am bringing it anyway. See you soon!
9:56 pm on March 5th, 2011
Wolfie – we have a platinum plus card that we “snagged” along the way. Can we stay in Cat-a-nooa Tennessee tonight? Or can you blur us all to Kat-mandu…we have a permanent suite at the Grand Hilton there and there’s enough snuggle beds for everyone, and room service has the BEST raw fish balls….ummmmm
10:27 pm on March 5th, 2011
Herbals, it sounds devine. It really does. But This is Mission Critical and we have not time for lounging. (We can always do that afterwards!)
So, I’ll meet youse guys in Tenneesee. And I’ll keep an ear out for the sweet sounds of a harmonica.

Woooof x 5 here, not that it matters, but we just wanted to be on the record. We feel bad that we are not going, but we think it is for the best that we don’t.
10:48 pm on March 5th, 2011
Macy – We all knw that you are doing your part right there from Lone Star Central. We are home too, since the Wrotten Kats went along. We can monitor the radar screens from here, and report to the team if we get any Pug By The River Sightings.

See you all tomorrow in Tenneesee. Tenneesee???

Meooorrooowwww! snort
Staff was gone at a Bluegrass concert all day and most of the night and she didn’t leave to computer on so we MISSED the action. Dog-nabbit!
However Staff says that the plunderers have the debit cards from our blog money for emergency expenses just in case. WE will keep our emergency decoder on in case something breaks wide open.
Good luck Wookie. Hope you find them before too long. Stay warm and safe.
PS Staff says they saw the Grascals. Here is a song that the singer wrote about his grandmaw. He says grandmaw cause he is part Canadian. He says we southerners say Grandma. We thought of Rio when they sang it.
