Good morning! Same here, Spence. None of us, even the ‘rents, have ever had a martini.
Wow! That was some egg-citement we missed last night, while we were sound asleep. We mean the race, but Storyteller’s pain in the neck was worrisome too. How is he feeling? Does he still have that pain? Were those nasty cats hanging on his neck?

After the Wild Race in the Hospital Corridor last night and the All-Clear from Golinka, everyone here fell into a deep sleep.

    Martinis? Don’t do it Spence!

Good morning, everyone! Our pawrayers are in Mass. today.
No one here has had a martini either. Sounds like a fun event.
Have a warm, wonderful wellspring of a Wednesday.

Good morning all. We tried a martini once when we were young and foolish.
Didn’t see what all the excitement was about.

The Storyteller is up and at ’em this morning. No pain, no problems.

The doc was baffled, but they eliminated all the dangerous possibilities. So we are going with the doc’s diagnosis – “just one of those things”.

    Thank dawg!

Martinis are lovely especially if made with Beefeater gin. (And don’t forget the olives.)

She always thought it was neat that you can leave it in the freezer.

Hello All–I’ll have to go back and catch up on the excitement from late yesterday, but I’m glad it seems to have turned out well.
I see to recall martinis having a kind of nasty smell, and I ask why not Mutts and Manhattans (or Merlot, or Malbec), Ale and Adoptions, French 75s and Forever Homes (this would explain why I’m not in advertising or marketing) or just dogs and Drinks?
    B. Stover–The husband used to drink Beefeater Martinis and during Lent I used to come around to finding the smell attractive–what does that mean?

I just got caught up–delighted that the Storyteller is OK and that the family is resting comfortably under the quilt.
I really loved the commentary of the race and look forward to hearing about other such events (ideally under less heart-grabbing circumstances). I’m not sure my marathon slo-mo commute to work would qualify, but there must be other events for Wyatt and Ole Doc to cover…

Diane: I don’t know what that means but it is interesting.

Bear: Vodka martinis are nice also. (Shaken not stirred!) I forgot that vodka doesn’t freeze. Blue cheese olives are nice also.

    11:52 am on June 24th, 2015

I had martinis at a downtown Chicago Martini bar years ago and they were wonderful. I think they were made with cranberry flavored vodka.

Certainly glad The Storyteller is feeling tip top this morning. A little scary last night!

Rio, I do not think you should pinch the blossoms from your tomato plants. You might want to take off the suckers though. Remember, those are the little shoots that start growing in the v between the main stem and the side leaves. This prevents your plant from using too much energy on the foliage, rather than producing fruits.

I was the co-pilot and made sure my Lady didn’t float away as we drove for safety. Since then, I’ve taken on more responsibility at the kennel. I am on fire watch and oversee napping activities. I’ve been approached to help teach Maury, the dog not the person everything he needs to know about being a dog. Before I accept the position, I have a question. How long did it take you to get manners? Maury, the dog not the person says they should be coming along any day now.

W’s and T’s Dad and B. Stover–I had heard that it was shaking that bruised the gin (or vodka). Drat–this like starve a ___ and feed a ___; I can never remember which one gets starved.

  22. Tupper's Mama
    3:04 pm on June 24th, 2015

Prof Bee – we beg to differ. The actual saying of feed a cold, starve a fever” is a quote from the Canterbury Tales. And in actuality, might have caused excessive deaths during the plague, as fever wracked patients were denied nourishment.
( we had a really good History teacher many years ago – the lessons are still embedded. See Diane – teachers DO make a difference)

  23. B.Stover
    3:19 pm on June 24th, 2015

All I can find is that the saying has been traced to a dictionary of 1574. Where is it in the Canterbury Tales?

  24. Wookie's and Teddy's Dad
    3:22 pm on June 24th, 2015

Wyatt — I actually thought I had shipped out a package of manners to my namesake at Snowhook a couple of weeks ago via Federal Express special delivery. Is it possible that one of the other of the thieves intercepted the package? Or perhaps might it have gone astray because of the fire and evacuation? Please advise.

Separately, on the martini front, there is a specialty gin called Hendricks which is actually quite nice as a martini base. In addition to the traditional juniper infusion, Hendrick’s uses Bulgarian rose and cucumber to add flavor and is bottled in a dark blue apothecary-style bottle.

  25. Tupper's Mama
    3:43 pm on June 24th, 2015

Bee – can’t say where in Canterbury it is. But the saying is apparently a misinterpretation of Middle English. Supposedly the advice meant that IF you fed a cold, it would give a fever fuel to burn.
Anyway, it has been misproven by medical science over and over again.

Guess what? I have an eyebrow window to put in the auction sale! I just learned about them while trying to find out what to call that window thingy. The cellar is starting to look sort of empty.

Heh heh I always feed a cold and starve a fever.

RIO! A quonset is a big metal building that is set on a cement slab and the sides and roof are one curved piece. It is huge and farm equipment lives in it.

Mr. Staff has a martini every evening between 4 and supper. Unless he has it between 3 and supper.

2 olives and he insists on Queens with pits.

He has it in a jelly glass from my father’s large collection and he stirs it lazily. Shaken would be way too much work.

Mr. and Mrs. North from the Lockridge mysteries used a lemon peel instead of olives.

Talk of martinis takes me back. ..Dan and I were of the 3 martini lunch generation, altho neither of us could managed 3 at lunch..I do remember having lunch with Dan in DC (we lived in Alexandria and rode our bicycles in on weekends) and watched a couple of well known newscasters have a 3 martini lunch. They seemed ok as they left! Their livers may have not agreed,

Mac is having a hard time. I am starting strong pain pills tomorrow. I want his short time with us to be pain free, He will be 11 on July 3rd, And he is the last of the River Bear pack.

Meanwhile, back here at our ranch, the fences are up, the deck will be finished tomorrow, the landscaping comes in on Tuesday, and pictures will be coming right after that. Whew – been a long few weeks with these projects.

Oh, and our little apple tree is just brimming with little walnut size apples. That is the tree that we posted a picture of this winter, with the snow up to the crotch of the tree. didn’t seem to hurt the little tree at all.

Bluecat: I have vodka, Irish Creme liqueur and Half&Half. No coffee liqueur. I am always missing one ingredient no matter what I want to make. This is another reason why I am neither a good cook or a drinker. I once thought it would be interesting to learn to be a bartender but didn’t want to deal with obnoxious people. My favorite drink was a Grasshopper –I called it an adult milkshake. But when I recently tried to order it in KY, the bartender just shook his head. That happened once in Fairbanks five years ago. It must be so old-fashioned that the young bartenders don’t know how to make it.
