Monkey in TO FETCH A THIEF

B. Stover was puzzled by a reference in yesterday’s post to a monkey scene in TO FETCH A THIEF. Yes, a puzzle for sure, seeing as there is no such scene. But a baboon plays a role:

I ran onto the loading dock. Still some light left and I could see Peanut clearly. She was on the ground, walking toward the perp’s old – what was the word? – jalopy. That was it. She walked over to the jalopy, lifted one of her huge round feet and stomped down, crushing the whole front end. Why? I had no idea, but I liked it, liked it a whole lot. Then Peanut raised her trunk high and blew a beautiful trumpeting sound up toward the darkening sky. I loved that trumpeting sound – as good as Roy Eldridge or better – and was hoping for more, when the baboon blew right by me with a whoosh of air, flew out into the night and disappeared from view, although not before I saw that he had the sombrero.

I jumped down onto the ground and went over to Peanut. This was the Peanut Case, meaning she was my responsibility. First I had to get her attention. That probably meant waiting until she’d finished crushing the jalopy’s back end. It didn’t take long.

    Greetings!

Congratulations to Bowser, July’s Friend of the Month!

I was just looking at the MLB standings, and if the World Series was played today, Spence made the right pick. I miss Siber-H. There was always lots of baseball talk on this here blog when he and Rio exchanged posts. sniff.

Royal Mum, Your house and landscaping look lovely! And look at the four-leggeds on the Plunderer calendar page!

Good morning all. Yeah, a baboon is not a monkey! But thanks for the clarification, Spence and Admin.

Off to the office for my first of two days this week. Office is closed on Friday for the holiday.

Barb is bummed big time. Monday she stepped on her new scale to weigh, after 2 months of eating clean. No cheating, just good, healthy food. She thought she was down 15 lbs, so imagine her surprise when she saw a loss of 6 crummy pounds! Gah! Double Gah!

Now she has to face the fact – her nightly cocktails are the problem. She loves sitting out on the patio at the end of the day with Lucy and me, and having her strengthing cocktail. Josh says too many calories, too much sugar. So starting yesterday, bye bye cocktail, hello water. Sob.

One of my students brought this up during a class discussion. At first I couldn’t believe it because it seemed so silly, but then I thought–what if it’s silly enough to work? Not a good recurring strategy, but I find myself strangely taken by the whole business.

Mom will not allow us to go outside now.

Barb, For what it’s worth, Mom says that she lost weight without giving up wine altogether. She cut down on it a lot during her diet, but she could still have some from time to time. She also continued to eat toast with her egg every day. She makes a whole wheat loaf, with lots of good stuff in it, like oats and flax and raisins and stuff. She just kept track of all her calories eaten, and calories burned with an app called Lose It.

No, 6 lbs was way too little. Should have been 12-15.So now we are going to try an experiment and see what a month or two with no cocktails will do. We are facing a deadline of 10/09, when Barb flies to North Carolina to celebrate her 70th with the siblings. 21 lbs must be gone by then. That is only 1 1/2 lbs per week. Should be doable.

Barb you blabbermouth! LOL. I lost a pound a week by not being able to digest any food and having it run right through me. I don’t recommend it though.

Diane, here is the link to the thing that made Rio name my husband (AKA Mr.Staff) Mr.Fireslippers. It took a long time to stick. Probably because it takes too long to type.

Staff–Thank you for the origin story of Mr. Fireslippers–no super powers to go with the name, huh?
B, M and L–after I was misdiagnosed a couple of years ago, I was so frightened that I stopped drinking altogether and found that I had effortlessly lost a measurable amount of otherwise unbudging body weight. So I cut way back–maybe 3 days a month–and so far, so good…
Did someone mention pix of wonderfluffed dogs? (And Rose? What about you?)

Staff–Wow–you have conscientious firefighters for miles around (which is a good thing). Thank you for the origin story of Mr. Fireslippers–he should have gotten super powers to go with the name…but I guess an additional pair of slippers is OK, too.
B, M and L–After I was misdiagnosed a couple of years ago (with and enlarged liver–which 3 out of 4 MDs found to be normal sized after all), I was so frightened that I stopped drinking altogether and found that I had effortlessly lost a measurable amount of otherwise unbudging body weight. So I cut way back–maybe 3 days a month–and so far, so good…
