Missing Musher
“Hey,” says Spence, “did you see this about a missing musher in Alaska? Her name’s Melanie Gould and she hasn’t been seen since May 30.”
Admin reads over Spence’s shoulder. “She’s a seven-time veteran of the Iditarod, last racing in 2007. Her truck was found on a mining road off the Denali Highway – Denali? Is that Mt. McKinley? – and her sled dogs were found alone in the empty house. Hmm.”
Spence: “This town of Talkeetna where she lives – wonder if it’s anywhere near Snowhook. Do you think AJ and Rebecca know her?”
“No idea. But apparently Melanie loves those dogs. So … “
“Let’s not assume the worst.”
“There’s the difference between you and me, right there.”
“It’s okay to hope.”
“All right. Let’s hope.”

I just heard about Melanie Gould on the news. She had not shown up for work either. They interviewed her boss at what looked like a bakery. The weather there is in the 50s and 60s apparently but it does not look good.
Good morning all.
9:23 am on June 7th, 2011
I hope she is ok, but often these senarios do not have a good ending. On the morning news they reported a colleg girl, age 20, I believe, who has been missing since last Fri. Hope for the best for both of them. Too bad Melaiie didn’t have a dog or 2 with her. They wouldn’t have messed with her I bet.
9:52 am on June 7th, 2011
Oh dear oh dear oh dear. We have to hope.

Not good news to begin the day.
Waiting to hear what Rebecca has to say.

I am so excited. I’m teaching T.S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land” in my elective class in the fall and now there’s an app for the iPad. I have to get an iPad. I’m hoping that most of the students will already have iPads. Fun!

I was going to post something about Melanie last night, but thought I would wait until this morning—Spence and I are thinking alike.
AJ and I know Melanie by sight, but beyond that I don’t really know her. With that said, it doesn’t seem right or feel right for a musher to leave their dogs.
What is there to do? Not much, but we can hope. In 2010 when Whitey-Lance was missing there was little I could do. Little those around the world could do. Five days in the wild by himself with predators in the area, it did not look good for our mutt. But people prayed, thought good thoughts and hoped—all over the world—and I believe this played a critical role in the return of W.L.
Can we do the same for Melanie? Each of us pray and hope in our own way. For her safety, for the calming and comforting of her dogs, for gratitude for her friends who knew something was wrong.
I’m with Admin—it doesn’t look good. I’m with Spence—we have to hope.

What a bummer about Melanie Gould.
B.Stover: That is exciting. I will look at your link later today after a visit to the doctor, a grocery shopping spree (10 percent Tuesday), a visit to the worksite (I have to go back tomorrow), and a walk because the sun is shining.
Good luck to Dan with his appointment and Melanie on her day at home.
I’m reading Until Tuesday. It is difficult to read (emotionally) but so wonderful that the nation within a nation can help our wounded veterans (and other vunerable people) heal and manage their lives.

Oh, forgot—Talkeetna is about 30 minutes north of AJ and I.

I’m behind Melanie in everyway. Us Melanie’s have to stick together. I hope she is okay.
This morning started wonderfully. Talked to YSuccessfulAS as he waited for the bus to go to Coney Island again for work. Then I went on my walk. Haven’t had the energy for it in the last couple of days.
Then I took the van to pick up Jesse. Zoë was driving Dan to the heart Doc 20 minutes after I left.
I did not have the cell phone, I’d left it for her to take.
THEN, the Van’s motor screamed, huge CLUNK (I thought the engine had fallen out) then it took a while to wrestle the van to the side of the road.
I looked under it. Nothing there. Nothing in the road.
Had to walk over to someone’s house to use the phone.
Luckily Zoë had not left yet.
Dan’s rescheduled his appointment.
The van limped to Jesse’s to await pick up.
It won’t get fixed until next week.
Luckily we have the pool.
HEY MELANIE! CAN YOU HEAR ME? SENDING YOU GOOD THOUGHTS AND HOPES from THE PACK!
B.Stover, that is cool about the iPad.
Well, now that I am well and truly behind by several hours. . .

B: That is very exciting news about the elective class!
Melanie: Good Dog! You are having more than your share these days. Hope things start easing off.

I Have been following a story about a man who beat up a little 7 yo girl for her bike.
Things are a little crazy in Alaska these days.
Sending prayers of protection to Melanie in Alaska.

B: We love T.S.Eliot! The upcoming class sounds like something we would enjoy (too bad Kats aren’t allowed!) Not one, but two recordings of Eliot reading part of his poem “The Wasteland”! The new technologies make for innovative new ways of teaching. You must love being a part of this!

Wolfie: These people are just sick. My stomach turns thinking about all the grief out there. Strange Days…

I am working on the pictures for the cookbook. I have “primped” what I have. Next I will resize them for LizF.
So far:
MollyPop: pic of Fierce MollyPop and the yummy cheese cake
Oley Howlers: Pic of delish Garlic pretzels.
B.Stover: yummy sour cream coffee cake.
TYB: pic of two very beautiful dogs!
Staff: Shortcake to die for, a wonderful veggie salad, to drool for pop overs
Alice: a pic doing yoga on a quilt
BSD: a delish looking French toast dish
BTW, Bear, can you send me a larger photo of that dish?
Any one else for the COOKBOOK?
If you sent me something and I didn’t post it, send again, the tornados here seemed to have messed some things up.
Doing the Cookbook first to get to LizF.
Rebecca and I are working on sizing the auction pictures for her blog. I will be sending those back to you for you to send to her. At that time they will look great and be the correct size.
I’ve been drooling here. Everything looks GREAT! Wish I could just eat them straight of the computer. If I did that it would be gluten free, right? Right?
1:27 pm on June 7th, 2011
It’s no wonder humans are on the short list!
I know wild animals have to eat to live and have to kill to eat, but we don’t to watch it. Just saw on the news that there is an animal park where people can pay to go in vehicles and watch tigers kill and eat live prey. Does that remind anyone of the Romans and their decadent pasttimes? We really haven’t progressed much, have we?
1:49 pm on June 7th, 2011
Melanie, I sent you a picture of Dawson’s Gingersnaps that is not on the list. I will resend it.
2:09 pm on June 7th, 2011
I added it and The Abster into the cookbook folder.
I remember receiving them, the tornado seems to have stirred things about a bit in the cyberspace around here.
2:20 pm on June 7th, 2011
Maggie and Barb,
I have sent you, by the not so secret decoder device, a list of the recipes that I hope you have already received. If anything on the list is not there let me know and I will resend it.
2:35 pm on June 7th, 2011
Masquers: Cats and dogs are welcome to attend my class: “From Empire to Wasteland.” (Basically it’s from the Victorian through the Modern periods.) I’m sure I’ll be writing about Eliot’s poem on my blog and I’ll let you know.
My computer wizard friend told me that our provost wants to hold some pilot classes to see if iPads could be used in courses. (We already use laptops.) Can’t really do that with a lit class though. I don’t know of that many apps available. He said that I’m retiring too soon because I could get involved in that. No way….one more semester and I’m done!

Greetings to All:
Staff: I like America too! The Prof and I have seen them three times in concert. “Ventura Highway” means summer to me. I can always visualize riding in a convertible, top down, on a long stretch of road, warm summer breezes….
Good wishes and prayers go out to Melanie.

Busy!… My friend says she has been very busy at the busy place…snort!.. . She picked up a new saying hanging out with her southern pals. It goes like this, “Busier than a one-legged cat buryin’ a turd on a frozen pond.”….heh!…I like that one because I can imagine Alice trying to do that…snort!
4:19 pm on June 7th, 2011
Smarts!… Apparently my friend and her pals were trying to do some arithmetic this morning and she heard some other funny stuff they were saying about each other. “If he were any dumber, we’d have to water him.”…heh!…Then there was, “They had to burn down the school to get him out of third grade.”….chorkel! ….Just for Rockie we can’t forget “You’re nuttier than a squirrel turd.”…snort!snort!
4:58 pm on June 7th, 2011
Rio – Mom worked with a guy who came from Texas. When he was going to the other office, he said he was going over yonder. Mom thought it was the funniest when he said, “Y’all talk too fast.”
5:04 pm on June 7th, 2011
Lost!…I didn’t know Mushers could get lost, I thought only guys like Whitey went a missin’….sniff!… I sure hope they find her alive. What will her guys do without her?….snuffle! …If my friend went a missin’ I don’t know what I would do…sniff!… I’d have the big bed all to myself, that’s one thing I can think of right off the top of my head….hmmm.
5:29 pm on June 7th, 2011
Barb has a lady at her office who is fron northern Illinois, and she always says “over yonder” for anything far away. They also say “cricks” and a driveway is a “lane”.
5:40 pm on June 7th, 2011
A wonderful day in the North.
The weeds are thriving in the gardens. I did pull some of them, then it got pretty hot.
So I came inside and made Staff’s recipe for Popover Pancakes with strawberries, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries. It was delish although not quite as delish as when she made it. Things always taste better to me when someone else cooks. Then I watched and danced to her musical link. Nice.
Then I started reading out of The complete poems and plays of T S Eliot. I read Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats. He writes wonderfully about cats. I watched B.Stover’s link. I would like to hear Fiona Shaw (I think it was Shaw) read more of the Waste Land.
Now I’m going into the shady part of the garden to find more weeds, or maybe I will read some more. Life is good.
6:13 pm on June 7th, 2011
Barb has started that old Hillerman book, Coyote Waits, but now the library called and they have The Search on reserve for her. Guess she is going to have to swith over, and read the library book first, so Mr. Coyote will have to wait a little longer.

Dawson, I’m happy for you that Life is Good. Very Chet of you!
The Van is gone to the fixers.
I’m watching “Enchanted April”. Love that movie!

Well, here’s a different kind of picture.
When I took Jesse home, he showed me how the swallows were picking up turkey feathers and putting them into their nests!

Well, I can’t get a picture of my new ones up. I usually go for black or white and I did another color. I was so proud of my choice!
Anyway I’ll try again, because I tried to put up comments that named those things and it won’t go through!
So here we go again.

Hey, y’all! I didn’t get to write much last night. Mom konked out on the sofa early, so I couldn’t get back on the computer. They had a record number of people at the library yesterday, and two people are on vacation, so she was busier than a one-armed wallpaper hanger! (That was for you, Rio!)
I’m so sorry to hear about Melanie Gould. We’re definitely holding out lots of hope here that she’ll be found safe and sound.
8:00 pm on June 7th, 2011
Well, Barb picked up The Search, read page one and was hooked! Haven’t read Nora Roberts for ages, but this is going to be a good one, can tell already.
Dawson, glad you are having a good day. Don’t you have to work tomorrow?
We are having a lazy dinner, after Barb worked today. Hebrew National hot dogs and baked beans. Yum!
8:04 pm on June 7th, 2011
The musical Cats was based on Eliot’s Old Possum’s. It was Shaw on the iPad app.
8:06 pm on June 7th, 2011
Life is not so good here in the Land of Enchantment. I’m packing my bag to go visit Dawson. The smoke is really bad.
Some flights are not able to take off or land because of the conditions. They are telling people to keep their pets indoors. We are just going to tough it out because I am not staying indoors all the time, and I am not giving up the dog park.
Prayers and hope go out for Melanie and her dogs. I know in my heart that she would not go off and leave those dogs by choice.
8:06 pm on June 7th, 2011
Purple! I love your purple shoes Melanie. Maybe I should have Staff get me a purple ribbon. I could wear it while listening to Ventura Highway….

8:43 pm on June 7th, 2011
Mom is still planning on submitting her one and only recipe. Can she just e-mail it to dishlickers?
Day 2 of school and now mom has tested out of 5 required classes. She better slow down or she will have to start looking for a job. The records management class is tedious, but ok. Tomorrow will be Excel. Today was testing out of 3 classes. Two were all about the mechanics of computers and the internet and mom is really glad she tested out, because the class is probably more boring than the test. Yuck. Does she care about the innards of the computer? She does not. And there were several questions about floppy discs. Does anyone still use those? The Windows 7 test was pretty sophisticated. She had to minimize, maximize, trash, move, copy, rename. She is thinking that anyone who does not know how to do those things probably should not touch the computer anyway!
8:44 pm on June 7th, 2011
Heh
Oh Melanie, I posted that I liked your purple thingy’s and they moderated it too! Heh heh I want a purple ribbon to match your thingys and then I can wear it while listening to Ventura highway.

Congrats on testing out of the classes. We are proud of you!

(Whispering) I did it! I signed up for a writing seminar hosted later this month. It’s only a two hour class, but AJ says you have to start somewhere.
I shared with SiberH that I have goals of the literary variety. I would love to be a correspndent from the Iditarod trail, and someday a published author. Day dreams don’t hurt, do they?
I’m kind of shy about it, but I’m excited too and had to tell someone.

Good deal, Rebecca!

Patrick has only been on twice. Tonight is the night when we get to vote! We all have our cell phones and the house phone and the laptops. Well, Mom and Dad do, they will vote for all us four leggeds. Yikes, we just realized that it is already on. Good that we are recording it.

Macy, There are some New Mexicans who are stranded in Texas because of the flights being cancelled. If I were them, I would just stay in Texas for a couple of months.
Rio, I will be glad when the Rockies leave the West coast. The games are like starting at midnight it seems.
Mom is reading a new book she just got from Amazon on the San Francisco Giants and their 2010 season. The book is excellent. Someday the Rockies will have their own fine book.
9:44 pm on June 7th, 2011
SiberH!… Rockies having their own book!…heh!…You are dreaming big just like Rebeccer is, only she has a big chance to make it!…grunt!
10:11 pm on June 7th, 2011
Well the Crazy Lady is still crazy – and now you can add stupider than a box of hair to the description. Too long a story to go into, but reader’s digest version, she has decided that she is the world’s leading authority on religion and what should or should not offend people of different faiths. ee-gads! This woman is proof positive that Darwin was WRONG!!
Macy – Mama recently applied for a different job, and they made her do online tests to see if she really did know Excel and Office and Word PRo and all that. Only the online tests were all the 2003 versions! It was kind of like taking a professional driver out of a Masserati (sp) and asking them to take a driving test in a model T.
Siber – please be careful. Our friends from Gallup have evacutated – they couldn’t breathe at all.
10:17 pm on June 7th, 2011
T and G, the excel and word classes are all on 2010 versions. I just hope there are some businesses out there that are that up to date!
10:22 pm on June 7th, 2011
Rebecca: That is wonderful that you signed up for the writing course. You seem to be a natural at it.
Siber H: Please come and visit. It is so hard to breathe when the air is filled with smoke. The air is fresh here. (Whispering)
I can’t do all that computer stuff either. Most of it, but not all.
Staff: Ha! Did a Dawson. 103 degrees? I was very hot today at 70 degrees.
10:31 pm on June 7th, 2011

Wait a minute – RedBone – RedBone Hound??
No….couldn’t be…..

10:58 pm on June 7th, 2011
Ok, I recognize that tune but I don’t know the words like I do for S&G and America. Maybe it is the culture here which is very anti Native American still. Wikipedia states that some radio stations banned the Wounded Knee song. I can see the stations up here might just have not played them at all. A not very subtle discrimination.
I know when my sister’s moved to Montana and I went to visit them I really noticed how the Native Americans were well respected. Here in the Twin cities that respect is still noticeably lacking in a lot of people.
That is a part of the culture here that I do not like.
10:59 pm on June 7th, 2011
B.Stover: I didn’t know “Cats” was based on Eliot’s poems. Cool.
10:59 pm on June 7th, 2011
Redbone is new to me on all fronts. I need to do some research. Just heading home from the office and very glad that tomorrow is a new day.

Oh, Mr. Hound, how you do go on!! *swoon* (licks)
11:23 pm on June 7th, 2011
Hey! Double post…. Hi Mr.Redbone
11:25 pm on June 7th, 2011
T & G,
Well I think a lot depends on what part of the North you are in. Montana and Canada seem good if you are Native American. Minnesota is not and the eastern part of North Dakota I live in is not. Have you read about the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks (the Fighting Sioux) and their attempt to keep their nickname?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Dakota_Fighting_Sioux
11:27 pm on June 7th, 2011
Wow!
Tupper and Gilly: I was just looking up “When I was Seventeen” by Buffy St. Marie. She is a friend of yours? I love her music.
11:33 pm on June 7th, 2011
Oops!
I think I meant “Guess Who I Saw in Paris” (he was looking all of seventeen). And I love Buffy’s politics too.

Staff – yup, we have been a part of that fight, and the fight with a lot of other schools with similar names. We had a local school with the mascots of “redskins” which can be as offensive aqs the n word. We explained that, calmly and rationally to the school department and parents’ group at a meeting. Explained the history of the word. Explained why it was offensive. Explained why it was inappropriate to be teaching their children to use words that were racist. At the end of our presentation (and keep in mind that you have seen pictures of our Dad) one of the parents stood up and asked who would care, cuz all the Indians were dead anyway.
huh?
Guess John Wayne got us all. Yup, they used to shoot us just to get the feathers. (sorry – bad Native jokes…)
Dawson – yup, we know Buffy. It all started at a concert – our Dad is totally smitten with her(its ok, Mama knows and isn’t worried). Buffy is very approachable, and Dad asked her to have a picture with her. Now, we get to see her every couple of years, and it has become a joke between the two of them. She tells Dad she knew him before he had gray hair – he tells her he knew her back when she could have BEEN on Sesame St (she wrote the song for it).
She has written some great stuff!

When I was seventeen I had an album by her that I played over and over again – you know like 17 year olds do – until I knew all the words. I was awe-struck and gob-smacked and still am although it’s been 40 years. Tell your dad to give my regards to her next time he sees her.

Maggie, Barb will really enjoy “The Search”. The story is fast paced and the dog training info and search and rescue parts are very intereting.
Someone on the blog suggested “Tea and Dog Biscuits” several months ago. Mom got it on her kindle back then, but just now got around to reading it. Thank you, whoever it was. We really enjoyed it. Have to admit Mom got teary eyed several times.
Hope and prayers for the missing musher. Life is so strange and can take turns we aren’t expecting. Like the others who have mentioned it, we can’t believe she would just go off and leave her dogs uncared for.
Rebecca, we love your stories about the dogs. You have a great writing style already. We bet your dream about getting published someday comes true. We can say we knew you when…

I met a wonderful dog tonight. His human held a sign as they sat at the edge of the parking lot of a big shopping center. I noticed the pair made of equals as I fueled my car. Black and white with blue eyes, the dog sat next to his human, “Give it time. Someone will stop,” he seemed to say. Ever faithful. He, the dog was the stronger of the two, his human wearing a cloak of hunger and worry.
In my backpack I had extra items left over from the breakfast and lunch I brought to work with me today. Parking the car, I walking toward the man and his dog. “Are you hungry?”
“Yes. I am,” he spoke above a whisper. As if he though fearing his friend went unheard, the dog broke ranks. Bounding, leaping and wagging he ran to me—“Yes! Please!”
Wanting both to be cared for, I asked if his four-legged partner had eaten. Yes, he had. The pet store in the shopping complex was kind enough to give his bud some food.
The human opened a granola bar as we spoke. “Thank you,” he said with his left cheek bulging with oats held together with honey. Happy for his master, the dog’s manners were momentarily forgotten as he jumped up to give a hug and a lick, “Yes! Thank you. He was hungry. Not me, I ate over yonder!”
“Yonder? Huh? Seems like I’ve heard that word before,” I confided as an ear scratch was given. “Take care of each other, okay?”
I walked away grateful that the man had his dog and the dog his man. “Thank you, young lady,” I heard the two legged call as I neared my car.
