Memorial Day

“Memorial Day was a response to the Civil War?” Spence says.

“Right,” says Admin. “In lots of ways we’re a very lucky country. For example, when we absolutely had to have someone like Lincoln, there he was.”

With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan–to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves, and with all nations.  (Second Inaugural)

    We had another garden vistor. Beets are coming up again, so neighbor gave Barb a bunch of old forks to stick into the ground on both sides of the beet row, pronges up. The little s**t pushed them aside, hopped in and munched away. Helped himself to some peas too.

    MacyMP, we laughed at the Angry Bird (and in fact, the bird did look angry!) but by the time we get caught up with the day’s reading, we don’t post answers. They just took the Barracuda blocker of her work computer, so maybe she will be able to keep caught up during the day and actually add some imput…..at least until they reinstall it.

    Mom is at work today and not too happy about it. She left Dad home enjoying his holiday!

    Princess Sammie, we met another Maltese this weekend. Now we realize how tiny you are. She had her hair all cut off too. Malteses always look like bigger dogs on the dog shows with the long hair and head pouf.

    Thank you to Spence, Admin, Lincoln and Golinka. All those words resonate in my heart. Going to be another long day. Went down the hill one way to deliver the Honda to get painted. The guy wasn’t there. Brought both cars back. Around 1:30 will be taking the NYC couple to the train station.

    Now from my gut . . I doubled the recipe, used claw meat instead of lump, and used my chives instead of shallots or green onions. It is evil. It is good.

    LOUISIANA HOT CRAB DIP Ingredients:
    1/2 pound jumbo lump crabmeat, free of shells 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
    1/2 cup mayonnaise
    1/4 cup grated Parmesan
    3 tablespoons minced green onions (white and green parts) 2 large garlic cloves, minced
    2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
    2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
    1 teaspoon hot sauce
    1/2 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning Salt and pepper to taste
    Directions:
    Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
    Combine all of the ingredients in a casserole dish and gently stir until thoroughly mixed. Adjust seasoning to taste. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until lightly golden on top. Serve hot.
    Serve hot, with hot sauce on the side for those who like it spicy. Makes about 1 1/2 cups

    Melanie, That sounds wonderful. Love crab! Barb would probably use less hot sauce as she is a wuss.

    Shallots are easy to grow, have you ever planted them? We have a doz. in this year. Each bulb will expand much like a giant garlic, so you will have about 8-10 shallots from each plant.

    Just taking it easy over the holiday. Drove out to Western Maryland on Friday where it was 38 degrees and now tomorrow in Chevy Chase it will be nearly 90 degrees.

    Getting my dad some large pint books at the library to read. Interesting to see what he likes and doesn’t like. Turns out he really liked the Jack Reacher book we got (Worth Dying For) , so we will be looking for other large print Jack Reachers the next time at The library.

    On the baseball front, a real regional rivalry about to unfold. Four games between the Orioles and the Nationals, the first two here in Washington and the last two in Baltimore.

    Wose, Dad is doing pretty good. He is taking chemo (orally) for 5 days in a row each month and then has the rest of the month off the medicine. He handles the week he takes the chemo very well, but the next week he feels yucky (but not bad enough to miss work). Dr says that is normal. It is his body trying to adjust his levels back to normal. We think we posted that the dr thought his last MRI indicated some activity that could mean a return of the cancer. So they ordered a PET scan which is done with some kind of nuclear or radioactive contrast that will attach to any cancer. That came back with a negative for the return of cancer which was a huge relief. His next MRI isn’t until July 2nd.

    His biggest problem is lack of appetite. He has to force himself to eat and food just doesn’t taste that good to him any more. For awhile, it tasted really bad. Now, it tastes just ok and he just isn’t interested in eating. But Mom nags him to eat so he can keep his strength up.

    All in all, we have been blessed. We have heard of many others who don’t come through the surgery and treatment like he did. He can still work and drive (so we still get all our special foods and treaties…Mom doesn’t make enough on her own to keep that up!) We have had a lot of support from family and friends (both in person and from the blog)and that means everything to us.

    (Sorry, couldn’t keep my 1st person straight in the last paragraph.)

    Macy: I’m just happy to meet a Pirates fan anywhere!

    Those were amazing words. I didn’t serve in the Military, but my Dad is a Marine, my Father-in-Law is a retired Navy Captain, my Grandfather was an Air Force Captain, and many of my relatives and friends are serving. While it doesn’t really count, I’m a Paramedic/Fire Fighter and work closely with Law Enforcement and I use today to honor everyone, both Military and Public Safety members, the two-legged and four-legged.

    G&BB: Rambling is allowed especially when you are sharing that your dad’s test came back negative.

    After dog chores, I spent the morning trying to repair the driveway. Yesterday, someone decided to drive their big truck up the mud bog that is our driveway despite my car being parked at the end of the driveway. It is impassable and we’ve been letting it dry out. Their truck tore up the mud and wrecked what had been drying. The trenches are now back to being almost knee deep. When they got to the house, I met them outside. I went straight past poodled-up and right onto livid. This morning I spent quality time with a shovel trying to repair the damage. It did little good. Grump!

    Gus&BooBear: I am so glad to hear that your pop is doing much better, and is kicking that nasty cancer in the butt. I know that lithium is not chemo, but I can sympathize with your pop about food not tasting good. When I was on the yucky lithium, each day I took it made me fell sicker, and sicker. I was on it for 10 days, but just looking at the vial made me feel like coughing up a hairball. I didn’t want to eat or drink (even my favorite, Coke Zero) made me gag. Now I am on different meds and feel better.

    I always have youse guys, your mom, and your pop in my good thoughts and prayers.

    Were youse rambling? I couldn’t tell.

    RIO! Siber-H is correct about the Subway Series. Years ago, when working-class people lived in the 5 boroughs of NY (Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Manhattan, and Queens) took either the # 7 line to Flushing, Queens, the home of the old Shea Stadium, or the #4, B, or D to the 161st Street Station where the old Yankee Stadium use to be to play. It was a whole big celebration, starting when the Yankees and the Dodgers used to play in New York.

    Buddy and TC – remember to snub the ‘rents when they first get home. Oh, sure – those silly dawgs will probably fall all over each other to say hello, but don’t forget – you are KATS! Give them a dignified “oh, it’s you. Have you been away?” kind of look for at least 15 minutes before you succumb to any kind of petting or cuddling. If you hold out longer, you may get treats to entice you to come for a welcome.

    HOH, I always thought that Memorial Day began as “Armistice Day” in commemoration of the end of WW I. Turns out that day became Veterans Day, so I was wrong. So now I understand your earlier comment. It is a shame that there is still division after all this time.

    T&G thank you for the wonderful words this morning. I thought of Mom, Maggie and Dad, Bruce when I read them. Also Mr.Staff.

    Gus and BooBear I am so glad your Dad is doing so well. I totally understand the not eating thing. I lost my sense of taste and smell once (10 years ago) and although some of it came back it took most of the 10 years. When I had the bad taste thing it was worse than not being able to taste. It was a struggle to eat. Eggs and milk were about the only things that didn’t taste awful. They had no taste at all which was a blessing. I lost 40 pounds but gained back 20 once stuff started tasting better. Hopefully you can find things he will like to eat. A friend on mine loved milkshakes during Chemo. They still tasted good to him.

    We did a little work in the garden today. Not a lot. I had to take a nap early in the morning and then wanted to take one again, but it got too late.

    We ate pork chops that Mr.Staff makes from a recipe in the Campbell Soups recipe book. His favorite (only) cookbook. snicker.

    And I fixed that *&^%$#$%^^&&*& printer.

    Snowbella, according to the USPS the big box of coats has left WA stat and is due to be delivered by June 1st.

    Thanks to those who responded to mom. She is so needy. I can barely keep up with her whining.

    I still don’t get the thing about political holidays.

    Royals, take good care of you mom and pop. We had ribs and tater salad too.

    Staff those birds look pretty sociable to me. Just hanging around the juice bar, telling stories…

    I’m sure I left out something…but for now I am going on Amazon to look for a good read.
