BlueCat! For a minute there I didn’t know of what you spoke. We all have gotten so accustomed to the occasional faux paw it is now automatically read correctly.

Good Morning to you, B, O.Howlers and All.

Good morning, y’all! Mom has today off, so she says we have work to do around here. What that means is that Mom has lots of projects planned, but she probably will end up sitting around reading a book most of the day. I think I can talk her into leaving the computer on so I’ll be able to keep up with y’all!

I’m thinking about “redundant” and “superfluous.” They are synonyms. I think of redundant as repeating something in exactly the same words and superfluous as saying something with the same meaning but not stated in the same words. (This is just me not the dictionary.) I suppose I just like the sound of “superfluous.”

A 6 year old boy in Little League made an unassisted triple play this week. The big leagues are probably scouting him already.

A Red Sox starting pitcher got booed yesterday at Fenway Park. He’s in good company. Yankee fans booed Mickey Mantle.

  18. Riö – The Evil Pug
    11:48 am on May 11th, 2012

Factoid!…Here is an interesting tidbit about how the word “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” came into being….snort!

In the stage musical, Mary Poppins takes Jane and Michael Banks to visit Mrs Corry’s shop to buy “an ounce of conversation”, only to find that Mrs Corry has run out of conversation. She does, however have some letters, and Jane and Michael each pick out seven, with Mary choosing one also. As Bert, Mary and the rest of the ensemble struggle to create words out of the fifteen letters, Mary reminds them that they can always use the same letter more than once, and creates the word (and song) Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. In addition, the cast spells it out in a kind of sign language that was suggested by choreographer Stephen Mear.

    Greetings All!

Now that I’ve had lightning bolts shot through my head, I am back home under the care of the Prof and the watchful eyes of the Smoochers. We will be plotting are grand gate crashing entrance to the wedding of the year, and after much debate with Belle Starr as to the appropriate time to do the wave we are ready!

I will really be making a fashion statement with my pink watering can handbag, and the lovely floral centerpiece Belle has chosen for my hat!

Masquers and the Prof are having a jam session right now, Belle Starr of course has her proper place on my lap, and Luna is most diplomatically trying to talk me into maybe wearing another hat…..

We are planting our tomatoes, peppers and beans this evening. Then cleaning stalls, then we will help to groom/trim Annie and Ned. Tomorrow, Mom tells us they will be leaving bright and early with Annie and Ned (“Nannie”) for the Spring Fling Scavenger Hunt, whatever that is. Tomorrow evening is the Art for Arf’s Sake Auction to help our guys. Whew! We are tired already. Mom says we have to let her rest on Mama’s Day. We say No Way!

The good news is that Mom and Dad got everything out of the “new” refrigerator the other day, then turned it off and let it sit overnight to thaw. Then when they turned it back on it worked! Everything is the temperature it’s supposed to be, so we don’t have to call a repairman — which I’m sure would have had a serious impact on my treat budget, as Rio says.

The bad news is that now Mom’s a little miffed at me. She and Dad decided to take advantage of the refrigerator being empty to give it a real good cleaning. Yesterday Dad cleaned the freezer. Today was Mom’s turn to clean the refrigerator part — taking out all the shelves and drawers and scrubbing everything down. When I went in to see if she needed any help, she was grumbling about all the dog hair in there. What makes her think it was me? Bubbie the kat has black hair, too. Not to mention the fact that I’m not real fond of cold temperatures. Can you see me hanging around in the ‘fridge? I don’t know what Mom is thinking!

So, the weather is looking wonderful for the wedding. Melanie and her family members are being used as last minute panic labor force. The bride is a basket case – as most brides are, but she has done a wonderful job of putting this together almost single handedly. The big rehersal starts at 5. We hope that will help settle FOTAS (soon to be GLAD) down. OTAS seems to be taking the laid back kind of view. He seems a lot like a certain Giant that we all know and love. They are both even redheads. Hmmm. Both tall, both redheads, both quiet, calm and stoic, both handsome….we think there may be some long lost relative connection going on here
Anyway – off to the rehersal. We’ll report back later.

Oley, What tomatoes are you planting? We are doing:

    Paul Robeson
    Mortgage Lifter
    Granny Cantrell German Red
Pink Ponderosa ( I think that is the one Wolfie liked)
    German Giant
    Box Car Willie
    Black Sea Man
    Black Krim

The first 5 were planted by seed at our house in March, the last 3 are purchased. All are heirloom, what else!

Siber, That tomato is named after that cw singer. Paul Robeson too, he was an opera singer in the 30’s I believe. Have no idea who the Sea Man was, but the tomato is considered a “black” tomato, just like Black Krim, which is from Russia. They really aren’t black, but they are a really dark color. So much more interesting than Big Boy, Early Girl, Better Girl. Such blah names, we couldn’t stand to raise them.

  49. B.Stover

Barb: Those are interesting names. I wonder why “mortgage lifter.”

  50. Barb & Maggie
    6:04 pm on May 11th, 2012

Bee, Mortgage Lifter was created in the 1930s by M.C. Byles who had a radiator business. The tomato is also called Radiator Charlie. He sold the plants for $1.00 a piece (in the depression) and raised $6,000 over a few years to pay off his mortgage. Supposedly people would drive up to 200 miles to buy his plants. It is one of our favorites. We have had some fruits over 1 lb. in the past.

Interesting bit of trivia about the tomato. Question: Is the tomato a vegetable or a fruit? The Tariff Act of 1883 required a tax to be paid on imported vegetables, but not fruits. In Nix v. Hedden, a case was filed against the Collector of the Port of New York by Nix to recover back duties paid. The Defense argued that the tomato is botanically a fruit. However, the Court ruled the tomato is legally a vegetable based on the common meaning of the word and its use for culinary purposes.

  53. Barb & Maggie
    6:54 pm on May 11th, 2012

We have always heard that it is a fruit, but as you say, for culinary purposes, treated as a vegetable. Interesting, Bear.

  54. Barb & Maggie
    7:06 pm on May 11th, 2012

I think technically anything that contains the seeds within is a fruit, and veggies would be what is left – roots, leaves and stems. But you are right, BSD, it was taken all the way to the Supreme Court, and eventually considered a vegetable. We did not know that!

  55. OleyHowlers

The garden is planted. We planted only 5 tomato plants: Jubilee
    Old German
Brandywine (our favorite, altho it is tempermental)
Early Girl (sorry Siber but we just cannot wait for that first tomato and they never let us down).
    Legend (a determinate)

    We planted 3 bell peppers:
    Lady Bell
    Orange Sun Sugar
    Chocolate Beauty

This year, we did not plant our usual habeneros and jalepenos. Reason: we still have many frozen ones from last year.

We also planted pole beans. Here are some pictures, but of course our garden is small and sloppy compared to Barb’s Magic Garden.

First, our lettuce and peas that were planted St. Patricks Day. We lost 2 lettuce plants, but the others are doing well.

  56. OleyHowlers

I think your gardens look lovely. The lettuce is beautiful! We like Brandywine a lot too. That is probably the most popular heirloom. We have never grown Legend, so let us know how you like it.
The Black Sea Man is a determinate, which we probably would not have bought. A friend bought it when she was looking for a Cherokee Purple for us, and couldn’t find one. If we planted a determinate tomato (one that sets it fruit all at once) we probably would have gone for a red variety, to use for sauce or salsa. Oh well, her intentions were good.

Rio, the tomatoes need a lot of room, because those plants get H-U-G-E. Not sure they need yards, but we only plant 4 in our 4×8 ft. bed.

The determinant produces all its tomatoes at one time, and will hopefully make for better sauce than the indeterminate ones we made sauce with the past two years. The indeterminate tomatoes produce all season long. Romas are determinate and used for sauce, but Pop couldn’t find those when he went yesterday. Time is short for us, as our greenhouse place is not open on Sundays. Pop had a half day off yesterday afternoon, so he got drafted.

Oley, I think your gardens look great, and you did the right shape right away. We learned the hard way that 8 x 8 isn’t the best because you can’t reach into the center.

Rio, to answer your question about spacing, we do 3 rows of 3 plants in a square,so they end up being about 3 feet apart. You don’t have to have them close, because they will not usually cross pollinate. You can have them far apart, or even have just 1 plant, and it will still produce fruit. Some fruit trees call for having at least 2 trees for pollination, but you do not have to do that with tomatoes. Yours will be fine.

I am finally here, Rio. We have the Rockies game on.
I was watching a really good Rangers game, a pitching dual, until a downpour came out of the sky in Texas and there went the game. sigh, A rain delay really messes up the starting pitchers.

I noticed the empty seats right away at Dodger Stadium and it is a much bigger market than Denver.
The Rangers have sold out tonight and both weekend days.

Someday the Rangers will win the World Series…someday…maybe not in my lifetime.

I’m as ready as I’ll ever be Natasha.

I was thinking about Zoe today and wondering the same thing as Rio.

Wooweee! We have a report from Golinka and by all accounts the mother of the groom is beautiful and having fun!

Rose: It sounds like Luna is being practical and conservative…typical.

I’m waiting for my next and final leg of my flight home. My flight out of the village was delayed because of a wind advisory. When we finally landed, my boss said, “Nothing like coming in sideways.” it was a topsy turvy flight and my stomach felt like splorting.
