Good morning, everyone and a final goodbye to a dear friend whom we never met.
9:04 am on March 21st, 2014
Thank you for posting that. We never met her in person, but we are glad we were close by when she completed her journey in this life.
We are blessed to have spent time with Amalia and Leonard, and to have been there with them to share their sorrow.
9:14 am on March 21st, 2014
Good morning all.
Sorry, but Mama may not be here today. She is sitting quietly, having a good cry.
The Corgis and we Kats will take care of her.
9:14 am on March 21st, 2014
Us too Barb and Maggie and Lucy. It was good to be able to be with friends at that time. It became a celebration of her life instead of a mourning of her passing. Thank you friends.

Thank you for posting that Spence.
I can picture Melanie running through the galaxies with Patsy. I miss her voice on the blog.
It was good to hear from GLAD.
Good morning all.
9:40 am on March 21st, 2014
Thank you Spence for sharing that post.
Although I never had the opportunity to meet Melanie , she became part of my family. Her lovely photos, her silly jokes, all will be missed by me. I loved when she talked about her family. You could feel how proud she was of them.
Throughout her illness, she was a true inspiration to me.
My dearest Purple Princess, you may be waltzing among the stars, but you will never be forgotten.

Good morning. We tried to post on the condolence page, but we got an error. It’s o.k. We know Melanie heard our thoughts.
Today is a beautiful day here on the farm. Our thoughts are turning to the veggie garden. And outdoors. And horses. And we got eggs again today, thank dog. All in all, it is a happy day and we have resolved to spend every minute of our lives focused on the moment and the happiness we find. It is what Melanie believed this blog is all about.
10:08 am on March 21st, 2014
Greetings!
Here I am doing laundry again. How is that 2 people make such big messes?
I am looking for a life less ordinary. Maybe my good friend Teddy may have some ideas.
RIO! You tell your friend if she is coming to the East Coast, I will fly out to Denver to meet her, and then we will fly back together. heh!
I am missing my VBFF Belle Starr.
11:10 am on March 21st, 2014
Spence, Thank you for this morning’s post.
GLAD, Please do stay in touch with us. Melanie’s family became part of our internet family.
I miss Melanie so much.
Amalia, I am so sorry you lost such a good and dear friend.
11:18 am on March 21st, 2014
Rio, I am reading your posts about the Rockies. Someone in this house, and it ain’t me, is falling asleep early.
Wose, mom agrees with you about two people making a big mess.
11:58 am on March 21st, 2014
Mom is with y’all on the messy issue. It certainly isn’t us.
12:00 pm on March 21st, 2014
Spence, thank you for posting the wonderful tribute to Melanie, a true inspiration.
My eyes and nose are dripping. (Sorry.)
I also wonder how two people can make such a big mess.
12:44 pm on March 21st, 2014
Youse are really making us wonder. The ‘rents always bame us poor Howlers for any messes. Maybe, the real messers are the ‘rents! Whew! That wore us out. We need another nap in the sun.
12:54 pm on March 21st, 2014
We are with you on a nap in the sun, OH.
1:16 pm on March 21st, 2014
Thanks Spence for the post this morning, even though between that, GLAD’s post of last night and Rick’s news of yesterday, I had to go and shed a few (gallons of) tears.
The good news?
Besides that we all got to know and love the beautiful, talented, funny, caring, extremely smart (even though her brain would take periodic naps) and rich in all ways that matter – sister of all our hearts…
it’s Friday and that means family coming over for dinner and cards. It is my last Friday here so I will enjoy every minute even if I lose at cards – which seems to be my lot lately.
1:57 pm on March 21st, 2014
Dawson, Mom said you beat her and ML pretty bad.
2:18 pm on March 21st, 2014
O’Howlers: That was the last time I won a game of cards and if you remember, I was making up the rules as I went along! Heh, heh. Rookies!
2:20 pm on March 21st, 2014
Dawson!…She beat me so bad that my tail went straight for two days…grunt!
2:28 pm on March 21st, 2014
Rio: That’s why Loulou tried to put a curler on it. She actually felt sorry for you at that point in time. Rookie!
Carpola!
My sister keeps abandoning me for the quilt store. Sheesh!
Also, no water and a strange plumber is here.
Suddenly I am extremely thirsty!
2:32 pm on March 21st, 2014
Dawson: I thought you were such a card shark and then I saw you lose. How was that possible? So then I discovered that the world is filled with card sharks and that Dawson LOVES playing cards and takes it very SERIOUSLY. You owe me a card game next time.
I’ve been stress eating chocolate over my car situation–as if that would help (heh) Was on the phone all morning with both insurance companies. I guess I am glad I am retired and have time to deal with this. My car will be towed within the hour. Then I will wait on pins and needles to get the damage assessed (even though the other guy and his insurance company admitted liability and have been very nice). I hope the damage is just the left front bumper and headlight and doesn’t involve engine stuff.
Stuff to do, places to go…BBL
2:36 pm on March 21st, 2014
Hobbit, How is Sweet Sadie? Did she visit another v-e-t ?
2:58 pm on March 21st, 2014
C.Hobbit, Barb is basically pro-insurance since she worked in the industry for 20 years, and is about to re-enter it part time.
If you are dealing with a good company, claim settlement is usually fairly painless. It is when you get into the sub-standard or high risk companies that it really becomes a nightmare. Since your car was parked and the other driver admitted fault, it shouldn’t cost you anything.
3:03 pm on March 21st, 2014
Dawson was scared to play Mom’s game, pinochle. Heh!
3:23 pm on March 21st, 2014
O’Howlers: Was not!
3:37 pm on March 21st, 2014
Ok, so we are still having a sad day here, but we have to share this with you.
My Dearest Friend and I used to tease all the time about winning the lottery, so we could go to Alaska, or take a cruise, or buy an island somewhere warm.
But it was not to be – in all our years together, we never had a lottery ticket worth mentioning. Then the other day, I got the $200. I thought about my Friend and smiled a little.
Then today, as I was picking up one ingredient for dinner, something made me buy another ticket. $110.
I have a feeling that I have a funny, joking and loving Angel on my shoulder. I feel very loved, but I just miss her so much.
3:41 pm on March 21st, 2014
Royal Mum, The Purple Princess is watching over you.
I miss her too.
3:53 pm on March 21st, 2014
Your friend had such a wonderful sense of humor! Last night at the museum event I wore a lovely purple blouse that I had just purchased and thought of her. I am sure I will do that every time I wear or see purple.
There is a special sorrow all its own in losing a best friend so you are due this day of sorrow and tears.
You know, I cannot ever think of her as a princess as to me she was such a warrior in life (although I guess modern day princesses are known to be strong, independent and intelligent women). Remembering her as a warrior is helpful to me as I continue my own journey.
4:00 pm on March 21st, 2014
O’Howlers: No I haven’t taken Sadie elsewhere yet or pursued the special cancer lab test. I will but have been dealing with other stuff. She is as sweet as ever and we are taking walks and soaking up sunshine. She seems pretty hungry and I wonder if that is another sign of spring. She has never had a problem with her appetite but perhaps the increased daylight and much longer days are energizing her. Such a sweetie and I am glad I don’t depend on her as a watchdog as she just wags her tail at everyone and doesn’t bark.
4:21 pm on March 21st, 2014
Mom told us how well-behaved and sweet Sadie is and we hoovered her clothes. We approve. Liked T&G and Callie’s smells, too. But those Wrotten Kats? We aren’t at all sure about them.
4:42 pm on March 21st, 2014
What a wonderful remembrance of our very special friend. Thank you Spence for sharing that with us.
4:56 pm on March 21st, 2014
What with the major snow storm that hit the DC area earlier this week (7-8 inches Sunday night into Monday morning), Teddy and Zeta had a wonderful snow play date on Monday, which Zeta’s parents have captured in another amazing video.

Wookie’s and Teddy’s dad. Thank you again. We love the Zeta/Teddy movies and they always bring a smile 🙂
5:22 pm on March 21st, 2014
My bestest friend on the blog is growing up. Teddy is so handsome, and his girl is Zeta is so beautiful. I always cry when I watch this video, but they are happy tears.
5:25 pm on March 21st, 2014
C.Hobbit, Sorry to hear about your car. At least the person who hit you was honest and left their information. No way that would happen in New York.
Long walks with Sadie in the sun! know that’s the ticket!
5:40 pm on March 21st, 2014
Thank you for posting this. She was a wonderful mother to her boys but to me as well. I’m so grateful to have known her. I will def try to keep in touch and will use this name as my nickname in her honor.
5:43 pm on March 21st, 2014
So glad that GLAD will be a part of this here blog 🙂 You know she thought the world of you and loved you like her own.
6:02 pm on March 21st, 2014
Welcome to our blog family, GLAD. I hope you know how much Melanie loved you. She was the best.
6:17 pm on March 21st, 2014
Melanie = Inclusive.
She included us in GLAD and Rob’s wedding and also their wonderful talents.
She included us in Successful Actor Son’s professional accomplishments and his engagement to his beautiful fiancé.
GLAD: Hope we will see photos and hear details of the upcoming wedding as we did with yours. (We LOVED it!)
And I miss seeing the successes of the only New York City actor I will ever know from western Wisconsin.
Thank you!
6:19 pm on March 21st, 2014
Gah! I mean that I live in Wisconsin, not the actor. And I taught English for how many years?
6:28 pm on March 21st, 2014
Wow, another lottery win! You definitely have some angelic help there.
They just predicted more snow next week. We are now at 80 inches, which puts us in 3rd place. 2 more inches and we will be in second place. Might as well go for it.
Billy, we live near the WI border in Woodstock, IL. Where are you? We go to Lake Geneva quite often. We used to live near Warren, IL which is right on the border, and west of here by 100 miles.
6:52 pm on March 21st, 2014
Lottery!….heh!heh!…My friend has the worst luck with those lottery tickets…sniff!…So Golinka, next time you buy one buy one for Snowhook or even better buy one for ME!ME!ME!…wheeze!
6:53 pm on March 21st, 2014
Star!….Teddy is really getting big…snort!…Every film he seems to have grown…chuffle!….What a guy!
6:55 pm on March 21st, 2014
Growing!…My friend says Beau and I have grown this winter, but it isn’t Up…sniff!…It’s out.
6:55 pm on March 21st, 2014
A new Zeta and Teddy movie always cheers me up!!
Spence could write a script for a full length movie.
6:57 pm on March 21st, 2014
RIO! I know that your friend doesn’t like to fly, but that she would like to visit her friend in Mass. Tell your friend if she wants to come to the East Coast, I will fly out to Denver, and then we could fly back together. I will sneak you into my bag.
There is plenty of PUG MUG beer waiting for you!
7:01 pm on March 21st, 2014
RIO! Who you tell in’? Since I have been unemployed, I have grown out too. If I had a curly tail I could be a pug. I already have a flat head.
7:08 pm on March 21st, 2014
Barb and Maggie, I live about 90 miles east of St. Paul/Minneapolis.
7:08 pm on March 21st, 2014
Barb, Holiday Valley has had 171 inches of snow this year. Mommies friends will be down there skiing this weekend, catching the best of it before it all goes away. Here in Buffalo we have had 121 inches. That’s way over our average which is like 80 inches.
7:10 pm on March 21st, 2014
B’sB, the Dirty Daddy Dawg has a brother in Delafield, WI. But, with 7 siblings, he has someone almost everywhere 🙂
7:14 pm on March 21st, 2014
Rose!…snort!heh!…You have a flat head too?…chuffle!
7:15 pm on March 21st, 2014

I just saw the very handsome Siber-H up top.
Thanks, GLAD!
RIO! On second thought, my head is more Gumby-like.
7:28 pm on March 21st, 2014
Dear GLAD – we are very happy that you will be checking in. We will look forward to hearing news of the family. All of the family.
So sorry we missed you when you came to Cummington. Hope you got the hug that we left for you with OTAS.
7:35 pm on March 21st, 2014
Macy is up-top. Thinking of Rick and ML.
7:37 pm on March 21st, 2014
Punching out. Grizz and I get to have our taxes done tomorrow. What fun!
Pleasant dreams to all.
7:40 pm on March 21st, 2014
Don’t mention taxes. Mom has been procrastinating. She has everything, just hasn’t organized it 🙁
7:52 pm on March 21st, 2014
Dawson, the DDD challenged mom to best of 3 cribbage game this evening. Mom cleaned his clock! Just one of those times when everything went her way 🙂
7:54 pm on March 21st, 2014
Rose!…My friend says she is getting her taxes done tomorrow too….sniff!…I just hope there is money in my treatie fund after it is all over and done with…grunt!
7:59 pm on March 21st, 2014
facebookie!…Have you guys seen the Jim Frangione video?…snort!…I’m trying to imagine his voice as the voice of Chet. We have not listened to any audio books by Chet yet…snort!…But Jim sure loves them. How could he not!?
8:13 pm on March 21st, 2014
Spence – thank you for sharing the tribute to our Friend.
Dad’s making copies for taxes right now. And he doesn’t look happy.
Have a good weekend, Everybody. Smile. It’ll make ’em wonder what you’ve been up to…
xoxo
8:21 pm on March 21st, 2014
Barb is doing her taxes at the end of next week. She was going to mail everything to the accountant, but then there was a problem so she has to take a big file in with her. Too much to mail. At least she can meet her friend Kim for lunch while she is out there.
8:21 pm on March 21st, 2014
Mom’s donkey is dragging…nighty night.
8:43 pm on March 21st, 2014
GAH! There is a bat in our bedroom!
8:48 pm on March 21st, 2014
Bat!…Oh no! Is it Dawson’s Bat?…gasp!
8:48 pm on March 21st, 2014
Shudder!….wheeze!
8:54 pm on March 21st, 2014
Try to get it out without killing it. They are beneficial remember. Can you throw a towel over it? You have an old house. Have you ever checked the attic to see if they are living up there?
9:00 pm on March 21st, 2014
Attic!…My friend used to live in an old apartment building in Glenwood Springs and there were bats in the attic. She was on the third floor right below them…heh!heh!…They could be seen flying out at night in search of their prey…snort!…She was not bothered by them, but the guy downstairs really annoyed her…grunt!
9:13 pm on March 21st, 2014
Glad!…I am really Glad that Glad says she will keep us updated on the family of many colors…snort!….I can not bear the idea of losing track of my Clarkson…sniffle!….I want to follow his acting career to the bitter end…whuffle!
9:19 pm on March 21st, 2014
We here at the Kennel miss our Heartfriend. Sniff.
Wose: That Damn Pixie has been in lurk mode. I have told her it is my duty to smooch her, but really I’m just making sure she doesn’t steal any more of my sparkles. She cannot be trusted.
That Damn Pixie agrees with Rio post last night about this here blog being a place of refuge. That Damn Pixie feels that now, more than ever, laughter and levity is needed through the heartache and tears. It makes her sad that she is lurking and not contributing. I keep telling her she is not funny. She still thinks she has a sense of humor. Bless her heart. Will she never learn?
9:24 pm on March 21st, 2014
GLAD: I am the matriarch of Snowhook. I’ve also been called the mascot, but that’s a story for another time. You may not know this, there is no way that you could, but I consider you one of my own. You should also know that I have a firm but loving paw as anyone will tell you. I think that you will find that you, OTAS, YSAS and LLL have inherited several aunties, uncles and cousins through the blog. You are never without family on this here blog.
9:29 pm on March 21st, 2014
And, given a pug sufficently plied with hot wings and beer, you will never be without room clearing emissions, but you probably knew that already.
9:36 pm on March 21st, 2014
Once years ago when Barb had an old house she opened the door to go up to the attic. There was a stairway leading to the attic, and there on a step was a mama bat with her baby riding piggy back. They “hang” their babies at night while they go out to catch mosquitos, etc. and then fly back to feed them.
Heading to bed.
9:40 pm on March 21st, 2014
Luna!…You are Mother over the house of Plunder…heh!heh!…snort!
10:02 pm on March 21st, 2014
Worst!…I do not know if any of you watch the Worst Cooks in America, but we are doing that right now….snort!…They are making these guys cook lobster. Yes, Leonard, I said Lobster….heh!…It is not fun for all these worst cooks, let me tell youse….wheeze!
10:08 pm on March 21st, 2014
Mother over the House of Plunder has a ring to it. I like it. I wonder if it will fit on a business card.
10:32 pm on March 21st, 2014
Ummmm….sneeze!
10:37 pm on March 21st, 2014
Bed!…I fear it is almost time for my happy walk upstairs to my warm soft bed with all my baseball toys in all their right places….snorkel!…It’s been a long week. Hard too. And emotional. Very trying. A bit over-whelming. A long week by all standards….grunt!
Goodnight!… Mary Lou I am thinking of You…sniffle!
10:44 pm on March 21st, 2014
ML: Ditto to what Rio said except the baseball toys.
Nighty noodles.
11:06 pm on March 21st, 2014
Teddy & Zeta videos are the best!
GLAD: You and OTAS (and YSAS and LLL) are family. Pure and simple. Need something? Just ask. If it is in our power, it’s yours.
Bat! My Dad swears that if you just open the doors the bat will fly out. It is best not to try to catch the bat. They can bite.
11:08 pm on March 21st, 2014
Oodles of noodles everyone.
11:21 pm on March 21st, 2014
Yes, I have been at the quilt shop a lot. However Dawson didn’t tell you that I made her newest nephew a lovely cuddle blankie while there. Bright orange on one side and lt. aqua blue on the other. It is so cute and soft she wants another. The first one took me 3 hours. She is leaving very early Tuesday. Yeep!
11:46 pm on March 21st, 2014
Hello again everybody! I hate showing up so late, but the day just gets away from me.
Very nice tribute to our dear friend. Ditto to all the nice things everyone said about her. My creative juices seem to have dried out a little for the moment, but I hope for their return.
Rick’s chief from the fire dept came back by to day to ask permission to post info about a fund raiser the dept is doing for us. I have been a bit overwhelmed by the scope of directions people know Rick from. Someone at the city paid our water bill today! Who thinks of such a wonderful, practical thing?
I guess I should turn in, as Mr. wants me to be at the hospital at breakfast time. This morning his eggs were cold and they put (shudder) bacon on his tray. I guess he wants me there to beat up on the nasty ladies from nutrition services. At least he didn’t call THIS morning with an orange juice emergency/
Love you all, even YOU, pug!
Oh, and Belle got to go see her POPS!

4:28 am on March 22nd, 2014
I bet the visit from Belle was just what Rick needed (as well as Belle….w remember that she is a Daddy’s girl).
Hugs and purrs to you, ML, Rick and Macy’s gang.
6:33 am on March 22nd, 2014
Bat Update: the bat was knocked down, picked up, and tossed outside. Alive. We were not permitted to catch him, even though we were dying to come to Mom’s rescue.
Mom and Pop fell asleep immediately afterwards, because they had been out at the Brit Pub, finally celebrating Pop’s birthday with some friends. She hadbeen too sick on his actual birthday to go out anywhere after the Restart. And he was on call since she got better. So sorry we told youse about the bat and then konked out.
6:34 am on March 22nd, 2014
ML, we are very happy to see Rick with his Belle. That is better than any medicine. We are thinking of you always. Don’t ever doubt that.
6:41 am on March 22nd, 2014
Such a nice picture of Rick and Belle. You can tell how happy he is to have her in his arms.
7:50 am on March 24th, 2014
I just read all the comments, and I thank you. I am having a hard time right now but I treasure your recollections of Melanie and I will be a contributing member in a little while. Plunderers are very special to this family. Thank you again. Zoe

for the other hand every little thing we cherish dearly is very much cursed, for the purpose of often times, who didn’t remember going nh a long time ago,
