Melanie – owner, with Dan and Zoe, of River Bear Newfoundlands, breeder of beautiful Newfs, maker of great videos, and an extremely important person here at – got some bad news from the vet yesterday about her beloved dog, Patsy. Our thoughts are with her. And Patsy.

Welcome Ripper.

Dearest Melanie, Zoe & Dan: We continue this day with loving thoughts and heartfelt prayers. Bear knows that your precious time together will be filled with beautiful memories, bright laughter and quiet joy.

We will be out of town and off the blog for the remainder of the day. Checking in again tomorrow.

Thank you Chet, Spencer, Peter and Admin. Also thank all of you guys for all of your support.

Patsy is near me and computer. She is waiting for me to finish “her” hard boiled eggs. If I don’t remember to eat them she barks.

Don’t worry about her going on a diet. Riö is right. It’s like the Atkins diet. Her kibble is Wild Salmon with no carbs, she has the homemade soup to go on it like the rest of the Pack, but they don’t get all Wild Salmon. I might even make her up some bacon and tell her it was Riö’s idea.

    Things we’ll be doing . . .

I have two rooms upstairs. The larger one is my workroom. I’m moving my bed in there and my large 8 foot desk into the smaller room. Then I’ll have room to build something so Patsy doesn’t have to leap on to the bed.

Wöökie suggested deep stairs. If you would send some sort of picture or link that would be great. I think you’re right on the ramp being a bit much for her later.

I’m also looking into homeopathy. Going to talk to my acupuncturist about that. I have used it for colds, flu, and other things to great effect. Modern meds and I don’t get along well. If there’s a side effect, I’ll get it.

Linda, our lurker, also sent her best. I’m trying to get her to dip her toe in here at the Blog.

I’ll be printing out yesterday’s comments for Zoë and Dan later today.

    Thank you so much.

Wookie asked me to post these pictures and specifications for “his” stairs (red carpet you will note! The riser on these is 4 3/4″ and the tread is 12″. They are the only stairs/ramps he uses with ease even when his back is acting up since they allow him to go up gently and gradually while resting on a step rather than having to go up at something more closely approximating a 45 degree angle with commercial pet stairs. Every other dog who has tried them (I share in the parking lot of the vet’s) has LOVED THEM! Hope someone can build them for your little girl.

    Thank you Spence/Peter/Admin.
Melanie – Leonard is working on something for Patsy, and I am in the process of looking for a “little” crystal for her.
Debbie LM – stairs are wonderful. Tupper wants some too. Her commercial pet stairs work for the sofa, but not for the tall bed, and she insists that if she was sleeping in our bed instead of hers, we would have better dreams and warmer toes. She might just have something there.

I love the stairs. Jesse and I fixed up something for her just for the next week or two. It keeps her from having to jump up and jump down. But I love that your stairs are just 4 3/4 inch. Ummm, why the holes?

Thanks Royals’ Mum and Da. And everyone else. I can not express my thanks in words.

Thank you for the update, Melanie. We think acupuncture and homeopathy are good ideas.

Wookie, those are really neat stairs. Mom has always thought that commercial pet stairs would not work for a large dog or even a medium sized dog like me.

I just received Tyb’s photograph, “Morning Dew,” from the auction. It is absolutely beautiful. The background is a wonderful mossy green and the water drops look like pearls. The tip of the green leaf is in focus and then it goes beautifully out of focus further down and the drops become large glistening circles with green outlines. (Love the color green because it’s “cool” as in not warm.) I have the perfect frame: gold with gold matting in layers that will blend with the greens. I’m going to hang it on my long wall leading downstairs. I love it! Thank you.

The holes in the risers are to make it easier for Mom and Dad to pick them up! Did Mom say h that Greg was the best contractor around? And he gives great tummies also! Wookie

Debbie LM: Those stairs look like the cat’s meow. I think the holes are for the 2 leggeds to make it easier to move the stairs. And, of course, to stick noses in and look through.

Love those stairs Wookie. Barb is going to show them to Kelly, whose Newfie Joe is getting up there in years, and has a little trouble with heights.

Barb has to go into work for the CL this noon. She did refrain from telling her off, and is just sending out some feelers to see if she can find something else interesting and close by.

    For Melanie and Patsy:

The hope that he would return and our race would continue no longer existed as the sun rose on the second day of a several day heart ache. Hope having vanished just like the dog.

Feeling that I failed them somehow, unable to face them, I rushed through my daily chores of feeding, watering, cleaning and loving. After finishing chores and waiting for a phone call that I hoped would bring good news, I heard the dogs barking. It was the kind of bark that any musher knows—Alert!

“Whitey! Whitey-Lance!” In despair and with hope, I ran to the kennel certain our wanderer returned home on his own accord. The hope, as hope sometimes is, was irrational and I was in for disappointment. Surrounded by the watchful eyes of the dogs I scanned the trees. Was the prodigal dog timid upon return? “Whitey-Lance? Bud?” I scanned the trees a second time, then a third, the tears beginning to blur my vision, “Bud, it’s time to come home.”

In my fourth desperate scan, hope giving to logic and clarity, I saw the cause of the commotion. Damn moose. As my heart crumbled and howled, I felt the politest of little taps on the back of my thigh. I knew the tap. It was the signature attention request of my blue-eyed girl, Patsy Ann. “Mama, it will be okay. Promise.”

Her tiny gesture broke the spell. I realized I needed to be in the kennel. The dogs were hurting with my hurt. Did they know the reason? —No, the reason did not matter, but they knew my heart could no longer beat on its own. As I moved from dog to dog, lingering, each offered comfort in his or her own way.

Softly hugged by Tomboy, she pressed her head against my stomach. Forgetting the greater problem of a missing dog, I focused on stealing my glove back from Lefty—Classic Lefty. Rowdy sat with me offering silent advice. Garcia, prone to gnaw, just held my hand is his mouth. Fargo, my main leader reminded me that a leader knows when to rely on others. Deep in thought and leaning back against her dog house, Savannah draped her head over my shoulder to absorb the hurt. Luna licked the tears that fell and Tenzing refused to leave my side.

Once avoided, I began to linger in the kennel over the coming days. The little sleep I endured often occurred curled on top of a dog house. I found comfort, solace and even my typical joy in tending to the dogs’ basic needs.

Those in the kennel welcomed those from the trail with tail wags for their buddies, playful greetings and nuzzles. As if the dogs had taken inventory once I completed caring for the racers with food, water, love and fresh straw a realization settled and the howl began. They seemed to sense we were Snowhook less one. The howl continued, breaking the frigid air of the midnight hour. Lacking the deep baritone of Bridger or the confident howl of Fargo, I howled a high-pitched, uncertain howl of a yearling.

Had his heart heard the call of his pack? —Maybe. Twenty-four hours after we, those who stayed behind, welcomed the racers home, we welcomed musher and missing mutt. As we had done the night before, we howled again—it was the howl of the whole and complete.

May you know that you can linger in the kennel of the Plunderers, your extended Pack. Just as the dogs did for me during those difficult days we offer our comfort and support. Need comic relief?—We can do that, too. Need a distraction like that provided by Lefty?—-It is easy to set up camp at Chet’s; someone will always be here. Need hurt and worry lifted from your shoulders and heart? —We will do our utmost.

    Good morning all,
I like those stairs. Alice can jump up just about anywhere but a cat of importance has a little problem with heights. I could use some stairs for counter surfing. Anything over 2 feet is a problem for me.

Melanie: AJ is in the back country, yet he was able to get a text I sent him yesterday about Patsy. He said to let you know that he is thinking of you both and can appreicate the bond you have with your best girl. If we lived closer, I would offer AJ’s strong back for moving furniture and his skills to build the stairs for Patsy.

Dogumentary update: I can’t get the video we made to save on a disc. I have an email out to the casting director regarding other options. She seems very helpful and has been quick to respond to earlier emails. Maybe Snowhook’s film debut isn’t meant to happen.

We figure your mom didn’t especially appreciate that hair tho…who needs more of that, huh?

The storm is over. Lots of rain here, but my sister really got it and she’s just 15 miles away. Massive wind, hail and there’s standing water of 3 feet in some of the streets.

Yikes! On the other hand, all her chickens are now laying eggs. Though I don’t think one has to do with the other. 🙂

Going to watch Midsummer Murder Series 1. It’s on Amazon instant view and because we have Prime (for shipping) we are getting it free.

    Hey Plunderers,
We also had rain here yesterday. Almost 1 1/2 inches. Our grass looks much closer to green, altho Mommy says she still wants more.

Snowhook, we love your story about the pack and you during Whitey’s “adventure”. And Rose, thank you for the prayer.

Debbie and Wookie, we are asking Mommy and Daddy to make steps for Buddy to use. For some reason he can’t jump like a normal cat, and has to climb instead.

Melanie, Mommy was snuggling with us extra close last night. She said she was sad for you and your mommy and daddy and Patsy. But we told her she shouldn’t be sad. When there is so much love for one another, nothing can be bad. Love itself is a Great Gift, and we are always grateful for the love we are able to receive and give. Yes, even the love from the Howlers.

Hey all! Checking in to let you know that I’m close to being settled in my new kennel. Mom asked a nice college girl to come and visit me around lunch time every day. She takes me for walks, plays fetch and picks up my poop. She does some stuff for mom like dishes and vaccuuming, but I don’t pay any attention to that. Mom keeps me safe in the kitchen when she is at the busy place. I’ve got my bed, my toys, my bones, and kibble and water. I’ve only knocked down that dratted baby gate one time, but I’m trying to get better at it every day. I am not a baby!

Thank you, SiberH. We thought we had seen all of yesterday’s posts, but had missed several, including the one from T&G about getting the jacket. That’s a relief! We had packaged it around a couple of small pillows to keep it from getting too crushed. Then realized that those pillows might have looked like dope packages if the box had been xrayed. SiberH. Due South is definitely available on DVD. There are two versions available, one made in Canada and one in the U.S. I think the Canadian may be slightly better quality, but either should be good. Also, for one of them (not sure which), there are four seasons of DVDs and for the other just three seasons (because the third and fourth are combined as a single season). It is one of the funniest and sweetest TV shows ever made, with great acting to boot. There are a lot of inside jokes on various things Canadian (including Diefenbacker, who was named after a former Canadian prime minister). The interplay between the male lead (Canadian actor Paul Gross) who plays an ultra-polite Mounty named Bebton Fraser, who winds up with the Canadian mission in Chicago (ergo the due south in the title) is just phenomenal. There is some really great music too in most of the episodes. I think you will love it.

Staff is turning off the computer now.

Liz, looking forward to the cookbook. Just thinking about it makes me smile….

Mom is finished working now, so she says we are going to bed. But before we do, we are wondering if any of you saw the movie “The Journey of Natty Gann”? Its one of Mom’s all-time favorites. And we see it is on Netflix.

Howlers: Our girl Natty is named for the movie. She is a love.

Rio? Macy? Hello? Is this thing on?

Perhaps Rio said to hell with the no leaving the yard rule and decided to surprise Rose? Snort. Maybe he is officiating a little something between Macy and Mr. Redbone, both who have been missing in action for a bit.

Siber-H: I bet you look dashing in your dog tag. We would welcome a picture…hint, hint.

Due South was in the 90s, mid to late 90s I’d say. Such a clever show, very witty. I have the DVDs but i remember some episodes which aren’t on there, so not sure if it’s the whole kit and caboodle.

I’ve seen Journey of Natty Gann, it was great.

I love the idea of Garcia holding your hand in his mouth, Rebecca.

We are here. We just realized that we posted on yesterday’s blog. Sentiment is the same today. We are just so sad…

23 days over 100 now. Dad took us to get snow cones tonight. The best stand had a line of over 30 people, so we went to a different one, where they don’t have as good dog-cones, but we got some real cream on ice, so it was all good. Coming home at 9:30 it was 101. sheesh…mom really wishes that she had a pool.

hugs to all, as we are never guaranteed tomorrow.

Sweet Macy! Good to hear from you today and truer words were never spoken as your last sentence.

Liz: Garcia shows love by gnawing as if I’m his personal, favorite chew toy. I understand and love this about him—it is his personal brand of affection. He doesn’t intend to hurt me and rarely ever does, yet I think in those days of Whitey-Lance missing Garcia understood it was time to hold rather than play.

Macy, you poor thing, that is too much heat!

R, how did he start doing the gnawing? was it as a puppy? It just makes such a gorgeous picture!

Liz: Garcia gnawed from birth—it is his only vice. He is my grizzly bear dog and he is very special.

Liz: I hit submit before I finished my last post. Writing the story for Melanie, I could clearly remember his tenderness during that time along with each of the dogs’ comfort and support.

We have two other dogs that put everthing in their mouth much like my Grizzly Garcia. Pancho and Lefty of the Outlaw litter. Outlaws indeed—both are prone to steal the glove off your hand or the chapstick from your pocket. We sent pictures and very brief descriptions about the dogs to the outfit they are working for this summer doing dog tours in southeast Alaska. Next to both their names we wrote one word: Thief.

Jeez We can’t believe Mama is still up. She has a big art show competition coming up and has to have her work into Fedex by Friday. So she is playing hooky from work, serving sandwiches for dinner, getting up early and going to bed late while she works frantically on finishing the last items.
We were just catching up on the blog and were glad to see Macy posting in. We miss your wicked little sense of humor.
But it is almost 2am and we need to get some sleep. See you all tomorrow

Good luck with the show T&G’s mama.

T&G: I hope the two of you and the Herbs are helping your mama prepare for her show and not distracting her from her work by trying to ship either pair of you, cats or corgis in that fancy FedEx box. Good luck with the show!

Liz: Thanks for your kind words. I need to find some time to write—I have the subject matter after all. 🙂
