Mary Carillo
“This is good news,” Bernie says. “Mary Carillo’s co-hosting the Westminster Dog Show next week. She just happens to be my favorite tennis commentator.”
I open my eyes. What’s this? Tennis? Several balls are within easy reach, the nearest under the couch. I dig it out, drop it at Bernie’s feet. He doesn’t seem to notice. I pick it up, drop it at his feet again. No reaction. I try again, this time dropping it on his foot.
“Chet? Want to play fetch? Is that it?”
Huh? I thought he did. But no matter. The next moment we’re playing indoor fetch, a fun game that never got played during the Leda days. Crash, bang, zoom. What a life!

First? Really?

Indoor fetch around here is a full contact sport. Everyone chases, crashes into each other, but only Belle and Annie pick it up. Sometimes Biddy tries to take it away. Holly and I just let them have it. We don’t see the point when there are 10 other toys on the floor.

Not to change the subject, but I was just checking out the Westminster Dog Show and found a video that I think Gus and Boobear especially might enjoy. The rest of you should get a kick out of it too. Have fun.

I apologize for mentioning only Gus and Boobear; actually I think all the cool kats will love the video.

Thank you Mollypop.
Good morning everyone.

Rio and B&M: I have to be completely honest and admit that I did not like Men in Black and only went to see it because a friend wanted to. Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith (I like them….they were the leads, right?) actually swaggered at the end. Yuck!
Macy’s mom: I hope you feel a bit better today.
Wolfie: How are you?
It’s minus 8 wind chill here and the icicles are still all in place.
10:16 am on February 9th, 2011
Good morning everyone. I wasn’t able to post last night, but just wanted to add that everything everyone said to Macy’s mom was just perfect. Please know that we all believe in you and care about you and that things will get better. And you have us here every step of the way for whatever support you need. Wookie

Fetch!… I’ll chase after food if it is thrown, but I don’t run after balls of any type at all….grunt! …I’ve never seen the point in all that activity…sniff!
Gone!… My friend almost stayed home today again but she somehow managed to get ready and now she has left….sigh!… She said it’s too early in the year to be using up sick leave…. grump!
10:36 am on February 9th, 2011
Rio – How is the driving today?
Macy – I know you will take good care of your Mom. You can make her laugh with your wickedly funny sense of humor.

Oh no!
Not fetch in the house. I hate to say I agree with Leda about anything…but I do agree with no fetch in the house.
I was down for the count yesterday with some kind of stomach flu. Didn’t eat anything all day and not hungry. That never happens. I’m going to mark all the good advice from the Plunderers regarding depression, which gets me from time to time as well. Right now I’m down because I was sick on my days off instead of being able to call in. 🙂
10:41 am on February 9th, 2011
Molly!… She sent me an email that said she was sick and tired of driving with idiots on icy roads….grunt!… So I guess it was okay….sniff!

MagPie! TV just showed “ice volcanoes” that have formed in the lake outside of Chicago. Incredible! We live on Lake Erie and have never seen or heard of such a thing.
10:55 am on February 9th, 2011
Good morning all:
Kindle update?
Ice Volcanoes?
Fetch in the house?
I’ve been out of touch . . .
First, Clara, now waiting for me at the Rainbow Bridge, and I used to play fetch on the stairs. This was when I was really sick. I would sit at the top of the stairs and drop the ball down and she would run down the stairs, catch it and bring it back. She could do this for hours. I could also lie down and do this.
Next: going to Goggle Ice Volcanoes.
11:11 am on February 9th, 2011
Was looking up ice volcanoes when YSAS called. It took 28.5 hours to shoot the 2 minute scene he was in. Most of that was using different cameras and having to move the set. It’s BE Season 2, Episode 3. . . you will be able to tell it is him!
YEA!
11:19 am on February 9th, 2011
We have a split decision at this house about fetch. I, Tupper, think that if you throw something away, you didn’t want it, and its just too bad that it is now sitting over there across the room. Gilly, on the other hand, being a hyperactive overacheiver will go and get the item, bring it back, drop it on your feet and wiggle in anticipation, waiting for the next launch. I feel very strongly that this is undignified behavior for Corgis who are , after all, related to Royalty.
And just ot prove that Kats are ridiculous, Basil plays a mean game of fetch. Mama will sit and throw one of his jingle balls, and he will act as if it is a maurauding mouse; running after it, killing it and depositing it at Mama’s feet. And he will do it over and over again. Sage meanwhile sits in his cat tree house with a look of total disdain for his brother’s actions. Its the only thing that Sage and I agree on.

We are impressed that those of you in the frozen parts of the country do not impale yourselves with an icicle. The weather here straightened up for the big game but now has frozen over again. We are expecting a record low of 11 tonight. This IS Texas, right?
Darn Kats will always take the best space in any situation.
Melanie, have fun goggling, hee hee.

This must be good that Mary Carillo is co-hosting the dog show. I never watch tennis on tv and do not play fetch. I’ll take Bernie’s word on everything but finances.
Bernie, mom says it is not too cold where you live to play fetch outdoors. She has taken me to the dog park this winter when it was 10 below, with wind. Only the Huskies and their moms were there.
Rio or Melanie? What tv program is BE? We want to watch it when Clarkson is in it.
11:31 am on February 9th, 2011
Molly, Have to admit, had never seen the ice volcanos. Very interesting.
We did hear on the weather report a few days ago that there were waves over 20 feet high from Lake Michigan, and to stay away from the paths that are close by. Evidently the waves could pull you into the lake. Of course, 1 person didn’t listen and drowned.

Hi Macy! Your video link worked for me. Ice volcanoes are neat. Winter is facinating.
I have a question:
I am going to pre-order Quacky Baseball today from Amazon. If I check the box that says this is a gift, will it stop Amazon from sending me emails about other children’s books that are released?
Unless PA writes another children’s book, this is the only one I will ever want. I’m sure PA also wrote this book for dogs who love baseball.

Thanks Rio, rats, we don’t have HBO either.

Staff, Thank you for uploading those 2 photos for us last night. One was from Facebook, the other from daughter’s iphone. Not sure why they were so small. The blizzard photo was too small to show that the barn door on the left was completed covered with snow. Good thing they had a John Deere tractor with a plow.
12:07 pm on February 9th, 2011
Barb & MagPie: Snow. I’ve had enough.
Poor Macy, I hear you’re supposed to get more snow. Climate change, yuck.

We’re looking forward to Westminster. That’s Mama’s version of the Super Bowl. And they have good commercials too, mostly from Pedigree dog food.
Mama reserves the sofa, the big tv and the snuggle blanket. They she sits with us for the two nights, and we watch all the lovely dogs (and some of the ridiculous ones as well). And the best part is when the Herding Group is on and there are TWO Corgis to cheer. Maybe someday a Corgi will go Best in Show.
2:16 pm on February 9th, 2011
When is the Westminster show?
Regarding Macy’s remark about icicles: I like Michigan because I really like the change of seasons. Also, I prefer being cold to being hot because it’s easier to warm up than it is to cool off.
2:37 pm on February 9th, 2011
The Westminster show is he beginning of next week.
2:39 pm on February 9th, 2011
Sorry, the crooked finger sent that last post before it should have gone. The show is Monday and Tuesday.
2:40 pm on February 9th, 2011
T & G, Barb used to like the dog shows better before she went with the English Shepherd breed. They are not in the shows cause they are not AKC registered, only UKC. It is always more fun to watch if your own breed is competing. It is still fun, just not quite as much so. We think the little foo-foo dogs are funny, when the handlers are combing and brushing them as the judge approaches. Way too much work for us!
2:51 pm on February 9th, 2011
Westminster!….Geeze they have the most annoying website. The show will start Feb. 14th – 15th on the USA network. It’s usually in the evening… grunt!
2:54 pm on February 9th, 2011
I’ll be in New York from Sunday until Wednesday and will spend part of each day
around Madison Square Garden getting to see some of the show dogs and talking to owners and handlers. It’s great fun, but the best way to watch the show in on TV in the hotel room. That’s according to my dad. He and Blou have been in NY at showtime for
several years. The event is always held at he same time as the International Toy Fair which he attends with a friend. We won’t do a lot of Toy Fair; it’s just an excuse to spend a couple of days in the city which my dad likes a log.
3:14 pm on February 9th, 2011
I have been to the Show once. Went with a group of Newfoundland breeders. Goodness, what a bunch, we were nearly thrown off the train.
Zoë also went once. She went when Bess was in the show. Bess received made two of the cuts and came in 5th or 6th in the entire breed. That year there were a lot of Newfoundlands.
We were proud or what!
We agree with TYB that it’s much easier to see (and hear) on TV. We used cell phones for communication but had to have the phones near our ears just to hear them ring.
3:41 pm on February 9th, 2011
Barb and Maggie – we think the foo foo dogs are funny too. We used to make lots and lots of jokes about poodles in all 3 sizes – that is until we met the lovely MolliePop and Mollie. But we still think that poodles in full show cut, which is an exagerated aberation of a practical hunting cut, must be totally embarassed to be seen like that, especially the boys.
But the best part…the funniest part…is watching the handlers who have NO idea about how to dress. The announcer is always saying that a good handler should “disappear” in order to better show the dog…but the incredibly bad taste that some handlers have make them everything BUT invisible. Didn’t they get the memo that THEY WERE GOING TO BE ON TV???
3:42 pm on February 9th, 2011
He really likes it a lot, not a log.
3:46 pm on February 9th, 2011
Tyb – we love the typos. Sometimes they are the funniest part of the blog. We will cherish the mental image of your dad strolling thru Central Park, arm in arm with a log.
3:47 pm on February 9th, 2011
hmmmm – Melanie a rowdy party girl who gets thrown off of trains….hmmmm

4:10 pm on February 9th, 2011
Tup ‘n Gill – You have offended my dear Cousin Sam and are pushing it with me. Do I have to come over there?
4:10 pm on February 9th, 2011
But Sammie – you are OUR foo foo doggie
4:12 pm on February 9th, 2011
MolliePop – sniff…you didn’t yell at Barb and Maggie…THEY said it first….snifff
4:16 pm on February 9th, 2011
Define foo foo.
Rio: What did you find annoying about the Westminster site?
4:17 pm on February 9th, 2011
FYI: Russian scientists have said that there is a 2% chance of an astroid hitting the earth the day before my 82nd birthday.
Does anyone remember “Duck and Cover”?
4:18 pm on February 9th, 2011
Tup ‘n Gil – You are correct. MagPie! dissed Sam first. When Sam becomes famous, she will never give them an autograph, no matter how much they whine.
They didn’t dis me because they know I am big and fierce.
4:27 pm on February 9th, 2011
Melanie – are there directions for Duck and Cover in Quacky Baseball?
Will we be able to Duck and Cover when we are in our (ahem) early eighties?
4:34 pm on February 9th, 2011
B.Stover – Foo Foo dogs, acronimic noun translating to
Foolish
Overfluffed
Obnoxious (dogs)
Following
Obsessed
Owners
Anyone else have a definition?
4:39 pm on February 9th, 2011
Annoying!…The Westminster site is annoying because the links to the topic roll around and I couldn’t click on the one I wanted to read….grump!…It keep rolling off the page. I finally gave up! …growl!
4:51 pm on February 9th, 2011
T&G: I think you’re getting into even more trouble.
4:57 pm on February 9th, 2011
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
5:05 pm on February 9th, 2011
Sam – there is a difference between natural, intrensic beauty, the beauty that comes from having a good soul, impecible breeding, great intelligence, and good health…and the overfluffed, plastic, pampered “beauty” a foo foo show dog.
You, our sweet little Sam, are the former, never to be confused with the less natural version.
(are we ok now with you, MolliePop and B?)
5:18 pm on February 9th, 2011
Tupper!… But Sammie is an over-fluffed, pampered “beauty”…heh!…They are always messing with her hair and wonder fluffing it… snort!…She gets carried around in grocery stores for goodness sakes… grunt!
5:19 pm on February 9th, 2011
This getting funny. I’m enjoying this, but I’m staying out of it. Carry On
5:27 pm on February 9th, 2011
Rio – but she has never been wonderfluffed on national tv during halftime of the Supper Bowl….
5:29 pm on February 9th, 2011
Sammie!…Go on! Show Tupper that photo of you being sported around in a pink purse in the drugstore that one day….heh!
5:32 pm on February 9th, 2011
Tupper!…That was once and may I add, against my will….snort!….If I hadn’t been drinking Martinis with Wookie I would have seen it coming….grump!
5:33 pm on February 9th, 2011
Rio, you must be mistaking me for someone else.
5:39 pm on February 9th, 2011
I think that T&G described Sam precisely as the opposite of the negative foo foo.
(I do remember that photo however.)
5:42 pm on February 9th, 2011
Ah ha!…I rest my case….snort!
5:43 pm on February 9th, 2011
We have a vision of the handlers picking up the dog, sort of under the chin and by the tail, and setting the poor thing down on the floor, after the judge has finished feeling it up. Could the dog actually be enjoying that?
6:07 pm on February 9th, 2011
I have to say that I do not have the stupid haircut that the Standard Poodles have in the dog shows. That haircut is traditional since Poodles were bred as duck dogs, Caniche in French, to retrieve the dead ducks from the water. The chest and joints have hair for warmth and the back end is shaved so they don’t sink. Well, I do have webbed feet, but I feel if those guys want their dead ducks, then they should go get them themselves.
6:19 pm on February 9th, 2011
Rio, um, er, this might be what you’re referring to, but it only happened one time.

6:24 pm on February 9th, 2011
Attention Plunderers – Mama here…I walked into the room and found Tupper and Gilly sound asleep, and Basil and Sage rolling on the floor giggling. Whenn they saw me, they tried to do the “straight faced, innocent purring kitty” thing, but they couldn’t control the snickering. I knew they had been up to something, even though they had seemed genuinely contrite after returning from the Supper Bowl party, truly reformed and wanting to walk the path of righteousness.
However, just a little bit of investigating showed that those two furry little reprobates had hacked into Tupper and Gilly’s computer program, and had been posting submissions to the blog in their name.
Please be aware that any opinions posted today may not represent the feelings of management and or Corgis. We apologize for any outrageous things the Herbs may have said, and sincerely hope that all the Plunderers are still speaking to us.

We didn’t mean to dis anyone. It is not the size of the dog that makes it foo foo. It is the way some of them are shown, throught no fault of their own.
Did anyone see a rather quirky movie a couple of years ago about some outrageous dog show people? Think it was called Best of Breed. Rather humorous.

B, don’t like those Kats – they’re Bad.
7:13 pm on February 9th, 2011
Snicker. . . youse guys!
This one is true. Yes, Barb and MagPie: the Judge does feel them up. Especially the males. They are making sure there are two things in the back there.
You can not show, nor should you breed a dog with only one thing back there.
Now, in oral history, there was an owner whose dog only had one thing so the owner had a false-y put in. The dog was shown and almost got his championship. I say almost, because the other thingy came down late and the dog had THREE thingys and was disqualified! Tut, Tut to that owner!
7:46 pm on February 9th, 2011
Melanie, That is too funny! Couldn’t the slightly dishonest owner have the fake one removed so the dog only had the 2 he was born with?
