Many Thanks To Rebecca

CEO of Snowhook. Here’s her overnight report on Snowhook and the Iditarod. (Manley Hot Springs sounds like a good winter stop-off place.)

At the time of drafting this report, Team Snowhook is on their way from Huslia to Koyukuk. From there they will meet the traditional Iditarod trail.

When it was announced that the restart was to move from Willow to Fairbanks, it was no surprise. However, I was asked several times about the inconvenience of starting in Fairbanks rather than across the street from our property. Inconvenience? Maybe, but I find harm coming our dogs or AJ much more of an inconvenience. With that in mind, we approached the new trail as an adventure. As we made our way to Fairbanks it felt a lot like being a rookie team again. There were a lot of unknowns.

What is not unknown is the welcome that mushers receive on the trail. The villages that serve as a checkpoint often rally around the race. Huslia was a new checkpoint in the new race route this year, as was Nenana, Manley Hot Springs and Tanana. As the team has traveled through Athabascan country, they left the river to run overland to Huslia and from Huslia to Koyukuk. Upon arriving in Koyukuk, they will run many mores of river travel and trail known to the team and familiar to the Plunderers.

While river travel may seem boring, there is also a comfort that comes with familiarity. It is easier to plan a run and rest schedule, and the layout of known checkpoints offers an ease of navigation.

With Team Snowhook’s mandatory twenty-four and eight hour layovers behind them, we will watch the team travel along familiar trail.

Unknown-3

Good morning, everyone. Be sure to check the stats as they seem to be updated now. All of our thoughts and pawryers are with AJ on the trail. Here’s hoping Philip and the B Team arrive home safely.
Mom gave us eggs with our kibble then went back to the race stats. Guess we will have to entertain ourselves until she shows us more videos.
AJ, have a safe and speedy Sunday.

*YAWN* I did finally get to sleep, sometime after 1:30 in the morning. Up at 5 to take Hilda out, then back to bed for a little while as Hilda expressed her displeasure. Now it’s just Alena and Fiona to get up, and you know teenagers.

Buddy, Darah and Hilde must have been conspiring this morning. She tried the 5 AM stuff too. Fortunately mom knows she just wants to honk at the deer, so ,
“Go to bed!” usually works for an hour.

Good morning, all. The ITC still has not credited Sibe musher Lisbet Norris with her 24 or her 8, both of which she has obviously served. Aily is back in front! YAY! Mom keeps wearing her new long-sleeve Snowhook shirt, but underneath it, she has on her “…and women win the Iditarod” shirt. Go Aily! Go Snowhook!

Buddy, Mom had to be up during the night to log into work. Before she went back to bed, she read about your Melanie. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you both.

Good morning all and Happy Egg Day. We here had bacon, eggs and rye toast.

Sorry to hear about Philip, but glad they are OK.

Howlers, how is Fern doing living with her sisters? How are the raised gardens looking? Are you still thinking potatoes and onions soon?

Going to go work on tax information, for appointment on Friday.

Barb, the ‘rents haven’t gotten near those beds yet. We are still snow and ice covered, with mud and water where snow has disappeared. We still have lots of potatoes, so we aren’t planning to plant any this year. We will be planting onions, and lots of them, as well as lettuce, tomatoes, and peppers. That leaves one bed, but they don’t want peas or beans or zukes, because they never can keep up with them. They are talking about a CSA for their other veggies.

Fern is still on her own. Yesterday, Pop opened her gate and her sisters inteuded. Fern seemed very intimidated and traumatized, so Mom kicked them out.

Thank you To Spence and Rebecca for the report on the Trail.

Team Snowhook, #19, is resting at Koyukuk, the last of the unfamiliar checkpoints in this year’s race. This checkpoint was sponsored by Leonard and Amalia in honor of the Navajo Code Talkers. The last Code Talker passed away last year. It is fitting that our team came into Koyukuk with the Northern lights leading the way to the checkpoint sponsored for the Navajo Code Talkers. We welcome and are humbled by having the Code Talkers and the Northern lights on the Trail with us.

    Good morning to everyone.

Buddy, Leno & Hilda, this blog prayer is from November, 2011. I’m sequentially scanning the old blog and I’m up to 2012. I look out for the prayer you requested.

Creator – Thank you for this glorious day. We awoke, and breathed in the air that you have created. We have touched our feet on the glorious earth that you have created. We have seen the sky and the waters that you have created. We know that we are most fortunate to live in your world.
Creator – we also thank you for the friends we have in this world.
We have found each other in your world. You have brought us together and stitched our lives together like a most wondrous and glorious quilt. Each one of us, although we are made up of different colors, different patterns and designs, with different backgrounds, each one of us has been incorporated into this quilt, where each part touches many others, where the beauty of the whole comes from the blending of all the parts. Our quilt spreads over all who seek its warmth, leaving none to face the cold alone.
Creator – just as with any quilt sewn together with care and love, when it is so well used, there may need to be some repairs. We ask you to bring us together with the thread of this prayer so any parts of the quilt that are a little frayed or tattered, any colors that have faded and stitches that have come undone may be made whole again; may be made strong by virtue of our unity. We ask you to hear our hearts beating together, united to pray for the good of our friends.
Creator – we ask you to light your lamp on the path of some of our friends so they will know that they are not lost and alone. Help them to find the gathering place where there will be good things waiting for their arrival. Where Macy’s family has felt the coldness and uncertainty of dark waters, please grant them your warm light and help them find the sun on their faces again.
Where Wolfie’s boys have struggled through the jungle of addiction, please give them the tools they need to finally cut through the grasping vines that hold them back. Let Bella’s beloved brother see through the fog to your light, and know that he can travel safely. We ask that you watch over Macy’s friend Marilyn’s mother, and be with her in this difficult time.
Creator – we ask you to be with each one of us as we work to be the best we can. We ask you to guide us to opportunities that will fulfill what is in our hearts. Please let there be open doorways for McKey, and let there be eagles’ wings soaring along the Iditarod path with AJ and the Huskies.
Creator – We thank you for granting talent to our hands and minds. Bless and guide the hands that sew and knit and quill and cook and paint. Bless the hands that garden and harvest and write and sculpt. Bless the hands that teach, the hands that sooth, and the hands that reach out to help others.
Creator – we are so thankful for the continued good health of our friends. You have brought Barb and Staff, Wookie and BlueCat back to good health, and we ask you to continue to shelter them in your hands. We bring to you prayers for those beloved ones in our circle who need you most – please gently hold Dan and Patsy on their journey. Let them feel only your love and ours. We ask you to hear our prayers as a healing for Wolfie’s mom Mary, Melanie and Zoe, and for BearSpiritDog /Barb’s second son and Liz’s dear Cricket. We ask you to watch over Dawson’s brother and sister in law, and Nana’s sister and brother in law. We ask that BlueCat’s dad will only need to remember this biopsy for the scar upon his skin, and not for the need for any further treatment.
Creator – we ask you to take the strength of our unity, and give it to those who care for others. Let Zoe and Melanie, Kelly, Dawson and Staff, Wolfie and all who give of themselves know that they have our strength to draw from and to lean upon.
Creator – we thank you for the wonderful gift you have given us in the companionship of our beloved animals. They are in your image that they judge us not, and love us no matter our faults. We ask you to watch over them, both in this life and the next. As we honor the memories of loyal Blou, fierce MollyPop, gentle Bess and all the others who have gone before us, they remain in our hearts. Bless those who rescue the abandoned, the abused and the homeless. Bless those who give more to their beloved animals than they give to themselves.
Creator – you have created this wonderful quilt of people, who while we may never meet, will always be joined together in more important ways. In honor of the many gifts you have bestowed on us, our gift will be the warmth and comfort that this quilt provides. We will shelter within its folds our many friends and family members who need our support.
Creator – we lift this prayer to you in unison. We ask you to hear our love and concern for our Circle of Loved Ones. We ask you to grant our requests and be with each one of us in our needs.
Creator – we thank you for this glorious day. We have breathed deeply of the air you have created. We have walked upon the sacred earth you have created. We have gazed upon the sky you set above us and been surrounded this day with your love. We know we are most fortunate to live in your world.
Amen

Here are a couple of excerpts from an article about putting together a champion sled dog team. Full article found at: http://www.adn.com/article/20150314/assemble-championship-iditarod-dog-team-musher-needs-savvy-and-cash

“Most competitive teams have a good number of dogs to choose from in their own kennel. A look at the top of the Iditarod field will show dog yards with at least 50 adult running-age dogs available to train. The kennel may also have puppies and yearlings, plus retirees…

But most Iditarod teams are composed of a preponderance of males. A few years ago, an Iditarod study showed that among the top 20 finishers, one place was dropped for every female in the team. Males generally have a better muscle mass to bone weight ratio than females, though, by all means, this is far from definitive.

Perhaps the most important aspect of a competitive Iditarod team is funding. The cost of feeding and caring for a single sled dog is approximately $750 annually. That doesn’t include the cost of entering the Iditarod…

A few teams in the field are composed of dogs that individual mushers bred and raised themselves. (I am excepting large, well-funded kennels that can afford to breed and raise relatively large numbers of animals.) These teams are generally a bit farther back in the pack. Occasionally one or two sneak up into the top end of the field on the strength of a particularly good litter of puppies or an excellent training regime.

However, putting together a winning team of one’s own group of pups is like trying to take high school basketball players from a single school and attempt to compete with a college team that has recruited from all over the country. There was only one LeBron James at his high school.”

“Oh my stars and garters” yelled mom (or something like that). Know that spring is here. Mom was opening windows to air out the house. When she got to the garden door (solid core with a storm door) she found a garter snake coming between the wall and the molding. (Through the frame). She grabbed a spoon and poked, shoved and banged. Hopefully the snake got the message and returned to the garden.

In the interest of a little sidebar humor, the two-leggeds in this household had a busy weekend. Ms. Zeta’s maw and paw had to go out of town, so Zeta stayed here over the weekend. While they had been together in Vermont (but with Zeta;s maw and paw present too), this was the first time that Zeta had been away from home overnight without her parents. They are just fine, but us two-leggeds are totally exhausted. In addition to numerous lengthy walkies, including one in the rain (Ms. Zeta looking adorable as ever in her raincoat while Teddy was au natural), they played for about 13 hours straight yesterday before resting. Debbie wound up sleeping downstairs with them last night, and they only woke her for breakfast starting at about 4:30 am or so. And with a hat tip to SiberH’s mom, we now have a much clearer understanding of the phrase “construction projects”. Lest there be no doubt, Zeta even got Teddy to help.

I wonder why Sibes like to dig so much. Is it a part of their genetics? Will the Sibe girls be with you for one week? Lucy doesn’t dig at all, and Maggie just a little, mostly if she thinks there is a critter worthy of her efforts in the ground.

Our initial planting is done – 300 onions, a dozen garlic cloves, a few shallots and 2 little rows of radishes.

Does anyone have a good recipe for a Carolina bar-b-que sauce (mustard based)? We got a jar as a gift, but haven’t been able to find any more. It is called Wild Thymes Whistlin’ Dixie Bar-b-que Sauce. May have to try to make some from scratch. It is great on pork and chicken.

We have a very large garter snake that lives under a board in our raised garden. Barb trims that area by hand so she doesn’t accidentally hit him with the weed eater cord. Josh did that several years ago and killed a poor snake. We here are a live and let live group (except for squirrels – Mags and Lucy draw the line there).

    6:02 pm on March 15th, 2015

Yes, I LOVE playing in the dirt, but my digging usually has a purpose – planting things.

I was just wondering if Sibes are genetically predisposed to digging for some reason. Terriers, for instance, were bred to “go to ground”, and they are famous diggers. One time my Airedale, Lexie, sat and watched me plant a bunch of flowers in a bed. A few minutes later I came back and the plants were all flying across the yard, thanks to Lexie’s helps. Never could let her watch me dig after that.

Maybe Siberians dug into the snow to make their beds, and to stay out of the cold temps. Usually dog behavior can be traced back to their roots. Probably why Maggie would love to come over and chase vermin in your barn. She would rate that a 10 for entertainment, but your guys, not so much.

Barb, Sometimes it is just a case of being bored. Digging is our form of quilting, or gardening, or reading. When we are otherwise occupied, we do not feel the need to dig. But when left to our own devices, digging nice, neat little tunnels can be mighty addictive.

Mom and dad met a lady from Whidbey Island who was returning home after picking up a service dog from Bakersfield. Pi is a small black Standard Poodle who will be working Search and Rescue and with Wounded Warriors. This lady had just lost her dog Cosmo to an alien abduction. Apparently the only perfect genetics on earth belong to dogs. She was an interesting character and perfectly serious about the aliens.

Wolfie , Aliens, really? I am sorry, I do believe there is other life out there in the universe. However, if I was in charge of placing a therapy dog, and someone told me they lost their last dog to aliens, I would be very hesitant to place another dog with them. At the least, I would be checking more.

Creator – thank you for this day, and for the homes we have to come back to. Thank you for welcoming smiles, open arms, and warm hearts. When all else makes life hard, there is always home to ease our spirit and soul.

You have given us all our own thoughts of what home is. It may be an apartment, or a farm, a city or a village. Home may even be a state of mind, but we all have the place that means “home”.

Creator- tonight as AJ and the team run across the ice, they are coming home. They run towards the waiting arms, and the joyous greetings of Rebecca. They run together, all hearts beating as one, all feeling the adventure and all working together to come home.

Creator, tonight there are some of our family who are waiting to come home. We ask for your light to guide them each on their way.

Let your light show AJ the best path to take as he races towards home. We ask for healing light to guide Melanie on her journey to get better, so she can return to the family that loves her. We ask for your light to brighten the path that MaryLou is walking, so she will know she is safe and not alone. We ask for your light to lift the darkness that has enveloped our Rose, and surround her with the glow that she so often gives to others.

Creator, your light is our home. The light of sun, moon, stars, northern lights, lightening; all create a way for us to see, and give us proof that you will guide us.

Creator, thank you for this day, and for the homes each of us have to come back to. Thank you for welcoming smiles, open arms and warm hearts. When all else is hard, we thank you for having a light on that leads us home.

    Information about GPS Tracker
Posted by Diane Johnson in Iditarod
    Date: March 15, 2015 5:19 pm

Wonder why you have experienced a lag in GPS tracker data? Since the restart of the race in Fairbanks, trackers have not always been transmitting signals properly. We are sorry for any frustration this has caused you.

Upon investigation along the trail by our GPS team, it was discovered trackers on sleds were covered and not transmitting properly.

Mushers have been asked to remember to keep their trackers visible so the signal is transmitted properly

    Sure…blame it on the mushers.
