Line/No Line

We walked around the house, me and Bernie. He had the .38 Special tucked in his belt. Bernie’s a crack shot, if I haven’t mentioned that already. Once we went into the desert and he tossed nickels in the air and then shot them to bits. Was that fun or what? And we needed some fun, because that was the day Leda left. That meant Charlie left, too. Charlie’s Bernie’s kid, and we don’t see him enough. A great kid, and really smart. What doesn’t he know about elephants, for example? Which turned out to be important in To Fetch A Thief.

“Nothing’s exactly open,” Bernie said, “so what we’re doing is over the line, no doubt about it.” Line? What was he talking about? Bernie kicked in the back door. Smash! I love that sound. I looked inside the abandoned house, still didn’t see any line.

    Hope Rosie is okay.

Chet: Please, please, please cross that line, whether you see it or not! We want to know what's in that house!!!

P.S. In case anyone was wondering — Rio! — where I was yesterday, it's all Mom's fault! She had to work all day — her last day of Amnesty Week — then she stopped to do errands and pick up a pizza on the way home. (By the way, she found a great new way to give me my pills — in pizza crust! She thinks I don't know…it's just that I love pizza crust so much that I didn't care!) She tends to be a night owl and stay up until 1 or 2 in the morning, and she gets up at 6, so after a few nights of that she gets pretty tired. She never did make it to the computer last night, no matter how much I wanted her to!

Perhaps Spence will use parts of the Astrid blog story in the new C&B novel.

I don't know why but for some reason this reminds me of a Colin Dexter Morse novel….the novel had one ending and the tv version had an entirely different ending but followed the same story line. Don't remember which novel/episode.

We finished reading Behind the Curtain on Wednesday. Luckily, Mom had a meeting at the main library on Thursday and was able to pluck Into the Dark off the shelf while she was there, so we're almost finished with that. We do love Ingrid, but now that we've read most of the books, it's all just a repeat for us. Most times we don't care too much if Spence wants to take a day off — he deserves it! But in light of all the "days off" lately — I know, I know, he was working hard, just not on OUR stuff! — I think we deserve an extra Chet day!!!

Rio: Whenever talk turns to lobster around here, Dad tells everyone how upset he was with Mom when they lived in New England. There's a place in Boston called "Legal Sea Foods," back then they just served seafood and that was it (now they do surf and turf stuff, too) and Dad always wanted to go there. But Mom doesn't "do" seafood, so what would she have eaten??? But everywhere up there lobster was fresh and inexpensive, and Dad always thought it was a waste for Mom to be living there!

  20. Kirby T. Penworthy
    7:49 am on August 28th, 2010

By the way, I'm walking on all four these days! The vet's office called on Wednesday and my boy told them I was still limping. So the vet called back to talk to my mom Wednesday night, and said if I wasn't better by Thursday or Friday she should bring me back in, just in case they missed something. I really didn't want to go back — but I don't mind being babied a little — so I kept up the limping until Friday morning. I figured I'd better not push it past then, or I'd find myself right back at the vet's.

From Kirby's Mom: I figured he was pushing it a little. When I walked him the other morning he hopped down the back steps on that back foot, then started limping again when he got to the bottom!

Barb and I just got back from doggy class, and today it was pretty much fun. There was this young German Shepherd Dog there that was REALLY BAD. The trainer took her from the guy who was working with her and put her in a pinch collar. They really don't hurt, but she threw herself on the ground and yelped and jumped all over the place.

If I haven't mentioned it before English Shepherds (my pack) have a strong desire to "keep order". I wanted to correct that bad behavior, so I started whining and barking at the bad dog. Everybody thought it was really funny, except Barb, who kept telling me "leave it".

I smell garlic and I think it is wafting in from the north!

I've never had lobster either, Rio. My mother doesn't really like it, but I am sure I would.

Thank you Barb…for the thought of shipping basil. One year when I had a bumper crop of Italian parsley (things being relative and remembering that I have only a small garden), I made pesto with parsley. It was pretty good but not as good as the basil.

I'd like to know what was included at the end of those Ingrid paperbacks. All three novels are on my Kindle.

Barb: Just a thought: I freeze cut up fresh tomatoes with pieces of basil in small containers. It's good throughout the winter for soups and sauces. (I just learned a few years ago that tomatoes could be frozen like that. You may already do it.)

  40. Barb & Maggie
    10:33 am on August 28th, 2010

  41. Siberian Husky
    10:39 am on August 28th, 2010

Maggie, yes we could have a few chickens here, but mom would have to build a fort with a moat around it to keep them safe.

I don't make any noise when I am begging…just stare. My blue eyes are a big help when begging.

Now, Rio, I know that your friend does not tie you to a tree outside. She might want to at times, but she doesn't.

Our Ingrid paperback books have extras and recipes in them. They are fun extras, unlike what is in the back of some paperback books.

  42. B. Stover
    10:46 am on August 28th, 2010

Barb: I just slice the tomatoes up fresh skins and all. (I'm lazy that way.) They seem to keep the flavor and so does the basil. Of course, the texture after freezing is soft so I only use them in soups and sauces. I just thought of something: They would probably be good on bruschetta and pizza.

We have the third book here — hardback from the library — and Mom checked to see if there's anything in the back (she had to be real careful because we haven't finished reading it yet, and she didn't want to see anything to ruin it). There doesn't seem to be anything back there but the regular book. Mom's thinking now that she may buy all three paperbacks to have them signed by PA when she gets to Georgia. OK, I think we're sold on the three Echo Falls paperbacks. Still trying to decide about the Chet and Bernie books — may have to do the hardbacks on both of those — oh, if only this festival could be held after TFAT is released…sigh!

Mom's also trying to decide about books for nieces and nephews — she's got lots of them, although most of them are too old for the picture book authors who will be at the festival. Luckily, she checked out the cancellation page, and the childen's book author and illustrator for Ladybug Girl can't come, so she won't be getting those for her nieces. Rio: Is it the pesto recipe she wants?

You need lots of fresh basil. I chop it fine with a french chef knife. (Some people use a food processor.) I also chop the garlic. I usually use an entire bulb of garlic. Put that in a bowl and pour olive oil on it….it should be "drowning" in olive oil. A bit of salt. Then you can use whatever nuts you like (pine nuts are the traditional nut, walnut, sunflower seeds, whatever). Then graded parmesan cheese. Keep the container topped up with olive oil and it keeps in the frig for a month. You can freeze it as well for several months. (I don't like cheese or nuts frozen so I add those as I use the frozen pesto.)

The Bruschetta is Italian bread sliced thick; pour olive oil on it and toast it. Then put diced tomatoes, minced garlic, and chopped basil (or use the pesto) on top of the toast; bit of salt and eat….

Franzen also wrote The Corrections, which we never read. It won the National Book Award and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. What's he's probably best-known for, however, is dissing Oprah. When she chose his book for her book club, he wasn't comfortable with the selection because he was afraid the "Oprah" label on the cover would make men think it was "chic lit" and they wouldn't read it. When Oprah heard that, she rescinded the choice.

Rio, Barb's basis pesto is : 2 cups basil leaves, chopped; 1/2 cup olive oil, 1/2 cup parm. or ramano cheese, grated, 3 cloves garlic, 1/3 cup nuts, chopped (either pine nut, walnuts, or sunflowewr seeds)and a little salt and pepper. She uses the food processor, but chops the ingredients separately. She some times puts it in ice cube trays and freezes, but does not add the cheese if she is going to freeze it. The cheese does not freeze well.

He should be able to get over Oprah, if he's going to be the next best thing in literature. But so be it. He's been on the cover of Time, but so has Rio. And Rio was on the cover of The Reader's Digest, surfing. Did anybody else notice that?

We're still listening to Behind the Curtain and think it's pretty good. Knowing that there are extras in the paperbacks though…the Librarian might have to give up her book-buying moratorium. After all, nobody comes to Montana to do book-signings, so she thinks why buy a book when she's got a whole library? I can see that the thought of a festival with 600 authors intrigues her! Another thing that won't happen in the Big Sky Country.

And for the record, I prefer pine nuts in my pesto. I think it's time for L. to make us a batch. Pesto on grilled cheese sandwiches…superb!

He asked Mom how the Angels/Orioles game came out last night, but Mom said she didn't know the final score. So then she very quietly looked it up, and it wasn't so good for her. They're playing again in just a little bit. Mom's still not going to say anything unless the outcome is a little better!

Yup, Angels lost last night to those stupid orange birds 3-1. Tonight's game just started — top of 1st. I see that the Rockies got a rocky start (sorry, I couldn't resist!), but hopefully they'll be able to pull it off. We know all about those famous Rockies Rallies.

My favorite breakfast during tomato season is tomatoes on toast.

Just toast your favorite bread, add butter and slice up tomatoes and place them on the toast. Dice up some onion and put bits of it on the toast. Add a little kosher salt. YUM!

Staff: French bread does not use oil or sugar in the dough and you bake it in French bread tins (long and narrow). American bread takes the oil and sugar and is baked in loaf pans. The difference in the Italian bread seems to be that you don't bake it in a pan but on a baking sheet.

Bucket list is one of those new phrases that everyone has to use. It is the modern replacement for 'to do' list. It annoys me, and I don't know why. Using it is not on my 'bucket list'

Wow B, that recipe looks great. I just emailed it to myself so I can put it in my recipe file. I might just have to try it out soon. The bread here is very bland. We do have a nice little bakery in Mayville that uses no preservatives but their idea of wheat bread is just about white. They also have an Irish loaf that seems to be white bread not baked in a loaf pan. The bread is good, but not a lot of variety. Other than the bakery it is just your normal supermarket breads with lots of strange ingredients.
