Levers Of Power
Bernie’s sipping coffee, very quiet today. “I know we’ve got to get back to the Astrid case, Chet. But right now I can’t help thinking about National Slim Jim Day and how to make it happen.”
That Bernie! I go over and give him a nice little bump with the side of my head. We love that, me and Bernie, and this time no coffee gets spilled, unlike some other times I remember a bit too late.
“It’s all about politics, big guy. According to the polls, the Democrats are in trouble.” Democats, did he say? Whoa! “Suppose we somehow convinced them to back National Slim Jim Day. Dollars to doughnuts those poll numbers are going to soar.” Doughnuts are in the mix now? And do cats like Slim Jims? This was getting confusing. Are we on our way to Donut Heaven? I move toward the door, just in case. Have to be ready for anything – politics is new to me.
Sunday at 1: Salem Literary Festival. Spence at Cornerstone Books, Salem Mass. Possible look-alike contest (Chet, Iggy, Princess, General Beauregard) with prizes. Possibly.

Chet: I agree with Bernie. We need to keep the Democrats in power so if Slim Jims will do it….go! And a look-alike contest.
Sam…….

Let me try. .

B.Stover: Mine went right up. Did your second one go up without moderation?
Going to vote in the Primary today. I will take Slim Jims. . .
I was thinking that if I could get YSAS's SO over to Salem on Sunday !!!
Then I remembered she's traveling to NYC to see YSAS this weekend. Darn.
Anyhoo, Dan is still waiting for a bed. It's not going to be where we wanted him . . I suggested sending the Pack over to knock people off beds, but Zoë said no.
We are waiting AGAIN!!

Look-alike contest? Oh no! How can I get to Salem, Mass? I gotta talk to Dad about this.
4:10 am on September 14th, 2010
OH Boy,
A look-alike contest!
Hmmmmm. Is Sam close to Salem? This could be big trouble.
4:11 am on September 14th, 2010
SAM!
A double post, both about YOU!
4:22 am on September 14th, 2010
Were you guys supposed to talk about the extras on the quilt?? (Speaking of the posts after Wöökie's 9 pm post.)
Riö, tell Grandma and Mom that there is only ONE Riö!
DebbieL and Nancy D: The label on the back of the quilt is excellent.
4:25 am on September 14th, 2010
Melanie: My second post had to await moderation also but I think it's accepting my new computer post now. Sorry about waiting more. I hope that Dan can get settled soon.
Sam: I think that you must find a way to Salem.

Hair extensions! The groomer cut my hair – I gotta have hair extensions!

Uh oh. Is Mom the only Republican on the blog? She really doesn't like politics but big govt gives her the heebie geebies. BUT Chet, she's all in favor of a Natl Slim Jim Day more for the dogs on the blog since cats aren't into them so much. At least we don't THINK we are….we've never tried them.
Hope Dan gets a rehab bed today. Sooner he gets there the sooner he gets home (but not until the doc says so, Dan).
We are very tired of the high 90 temps we're still having. Very envious of y'all that keep saying fall is here. B., is your relative in Boulder ok?
4:42 am on September 14th, 2010
Sam, your very princessy even with short hair!
4:43 am on September 14th, 2010
Should have been "you're" in that last post.
5:07 am on September 14th, 2010
GM, everyone. We were very impressed with the label on the back of the quilt. Worded beautifully. Thank you Deb and Staff.
G&B, Barb is a Dem. too, but I bet if everyone on the blog was polled, we would be fairly evenly split.
Barb told the story, a few months back, of when she got to meet Pres. Obama and actually talk to him and shake his hand. It was when he first started campaigning for the Senate, and no one knew who he was. She told him that she thought there were big things ahead for him, even bigger than the U.S. Senate. He looked at her like she had said something very profound, and thanked her. She thought it was the thril of a lifetime, and she came away saying she thought he would run for President in 2012. Everyone thought she was crazy.

Sammie!…It would be awesome if you could get to Salem for the festival and meet the Charming Mr. Abrahams….grunt!… Uh oh, looks like it’s just Spencer this weekend….sniff!
5:37 am on September 14th, 2010
"Just Spence" is even better!
G&BB: Thank you for asking. My niece lives in the downtown area and seems to be okay. And…big business gives me the heebie geebies.

Well, since I wrote things have moved forward. DAN HAS A BED! Not where we want him, but it's an ACUTE rehab which means he will have 3 hours of exercise not 1 1/2 hours. It's also where he was before. They like him there.
So many discussions and phone calls. . . Now we have lost the family room phone. We've tried calling our house on the cell but we can't hear it ring. All the other phones ring. We've tried the usual places, the freezer, the dog yard, the trash. It will turn up at some point!
I went to the basement and saw what Jesse (he's six foot four or five) was doing with the insulation foam. It's pretty cool. It spays on then hardens in less than a minute. It's the first time he's ever done it and he's doing great. He's doing the hard part first where it goes from five feet to 1 1/2 feet. He's getting a permanent curve in his back. He's almost done there, and then he moves into the part of the basement that is 7 1/2 tall. Whew.
My feeling? Get out and VOTE! I don't care what you are, just vote. For us of the female persuasion, it is very important to exercise what some of our great grandmothers fought for. And fought they did. They were arrested, some were starved, some tortured. For more info see the following

I think it would be lovely to live on Cape Cod and eat fresh fish all the time.
Melanie: Crazy to have to wait for a rehab bed meanwhile losing more muscle tone just waiting. Hope a bed is available very soon. Meanwhile maybe the doctor or physio can give Dan some exercizes that he can do in bed (leg lifts) or while sitting (stretchy bands for arms) to prepare for rehab.
5:46 am on September 14th, 2010
To all of you Quiltists: Great work, just beautiful, and now the inscription label is the perfect finishing touch. My No-Talent family appreciates such awesome work. Thank you!
5:50 am on September 14th, 2010
Oops! I should've refreshed but on this computer I lose my message if I do. Hip hooray for Dan having more rehab!
Vote vote vote.
6:11 am on September 14th, 2010
SAM!!! You have to get to Salem. This could be your big break! You are cute with your hair cut short, and after you get the starring female role, the movie people can do the hair extensions. Maybe Molly could help you get to Salem. She knows how to use a credit card. Or you could try this angle, Sam…if your mom and Aunt Molly's mom can drive all over creation looking at schools, the can surely drive you to Salem. Sometimes an argument like this works on my mom. It's worth a try.
If dogs could vote, they would vote for any politican that would establish a National Slim Jim Day. For all you cats on the blog, I have the same question as Chet…Do cats like Slim Jims?
6:15 am on September 14th, 2010
Yea for Dan!
Yea for quilt!
Melanie, have you checked the Newf beds? The beds are where all kinds of things turn up around here! Not my bed, cause I sleep wherever I want, but the Others like to collect things.
Just in case you missed it. RANGERS SWEPT THE JANKEES!
6:16 am on September 14th, 2010
Sam,
Let me know if you need a ChettheDog.com ID.
Staff.
6:18 am on September 14th, 2010
That dratted staff pushed me off the computer again. Well she is rather pushy today. She is getting ready to go quilting today and then drive to another TOGA tomorrow.
She seems rather disorganized for someone who is going away for a week tomorrow.
Alice
I have never been offered a slim jim so I can't answer that question, but Staff says I am picky.
6:24 am on September 14th, 2010
I checked out the web page for the Salem event and clicked on Spence's presentation. There is also a contest for best ears. I think our friend Kirby could win that in a heartbeat. Wookie (and still on the job)
6:34 am on September 14th, 2010
The back of the quilt is perfect! Thank you once again to all our talents here in the blog!
Staff, there is a recipe for Green Tomato Breakfast Cake in the little magazine insert of this morning's paper. I thought of you when I saw it.

Wonder Fluff! Where is my Wonder Fluff? Mom! I can't find my Wonder Fluff!
6:47 am on September 14th, 2010
Siber-H – My Mom and Sam's Mom and Girl are taking one last college tour on Saturday. It's a revisit with an interview at William Smith. It's on Seneca Lake, one of the Finger Lakes. That's part of the way to Salem, Mass. but still a long way away.
6:52 am on September 14th, 2010
Molly, I just know Sam would win, short hair. lost Wonder Fluff, and all.
7:32 am on September 14th, 2010
Staff & Debbie LM: Just looked at the quilt. It is just beautiful. You two have so much talent. I loved looking at the individual squares. How did you get the names on each one? That is so great. Debbie LM: Thank you so much for my square. I would not ever have been able to do one. The label is so thoughtful and is how we all feel I am sure. I am sure that SQ/PA will treasure it forever!
7:37 am on September 14th, 2010
Molly (ABP)
Debbie LM embroidered them on with her machine.
For all except SAM I just wrote them on with a textile pen. SAM needed gold embroidery thread. She is a lot of work 😀

I have a kite! I bought it before I went to Cape Ann and there wasn't a breath of air there. So I've been waiting for the right day.
Today is beautiful, the wind is blowing! I got the kite out and up it went! HIP HIP HURRAH!
Then . . . the wind did a 180 degree switch and the kite switched directions, took a deep fall and attacked me.
Guess today was not the day.
Must wait for a day when the wind isn't variable.
9:14 am on September 14th, 2010
Melanie – Ha ha – it's a Charlie Brown kite!
9:23 am on September 14th, 2010
Melanie!…So next time I tell you to “Go Fly a Kite”, you won’t get upset….snort!
Salem!… That festival sounds like it would be a fun one ….snort!…Even us guys are allowed in to meet Spencer. I’d probably end up barking at him, what with that pointy head and all…sneeze!…I wonder if he is going to judge the contests? It would be funny if someone brought their Kat and the whole place went wild!….snicker!
9:38 am on September 14th, 2010
Staff, Totally off subject – when Barb went to your blog, she noticed that you had Sweet Land as one of your movie choices. We watched that recently and LOVED it! And to think that those situations really happened, probably many times without such a good outcome.
9:43 am on September 14th, 2010
For around ten years we lived in a town next to Salem. Salem is a cool place. Witches are big there. So is Wiccan now.
We found out that one of our ancestors landed in Salem and moved to Marblehead (that's where we lived) in the very early days. Marblehead was where all the sailors, deadbeats and hot heads lived. So glad we have ancestors we can look up to!
Then when we moved out to Western MA, we discovered this same guy had moved out here to a town about 30 miles away. We are following in our Ancestor's footsteps.
But to get back to Salem (before all those pesky ancestors stepped in) it was second best to Marblehead to live in while we were there, now people would rather live there! October is really big there.
9:57 am on September 14th, 2010
Melanie, I am so glad that Dan is being moved to a cute rehab. So much nicer than an ugly one, that's what I say.
I think we ought to be lobbying Bo Obama for his vote on the Slim Jim issue. He knows folks in high places.
9:58 am on September 14th, 2010
Sam is high maintenance…and funny into the bargain!
10:06 am on September 14th, 2010
Sale m!…Too bad we won’t have a representative at the festival…snort!… Sammie’s big chance and no one to take her there….sniff!…You’d think a Princess could pull a few strings and arrange a driver pretty quickly… cough!
10:46 am on September 14th, 2010
Wolfie, We had to look back up there for Melanie's description of the rehab place. Sure enough, she did say it as A CUTE rehab!
11:09 am on September 14th, 2010
Staff, You might have mentioned Sweet Land as a book, rather than as a movie, however, we only saw the film (still loved it).
11:15 am on September 14th, 2010
Well….Melanie wrote "an acute" but I suppose Wolfie is joking anyway.
I'm baking biscotti and tomorrow I think I'll try Staff's tomatoe pie which means I have to get some bacon…….
11:24 am on September 14th, 2010
I had to go back and read what Melanie wrote to get Wolfie's joke, which is pretty funny.
Husky Rescue just got a dog in named Wolfie. He is part husky and mom doesn't know what else. Long story short, Wolfie and another dog in the household got into a fight, the owner got bit accidentally, Wolfie was kicked out of his own home. Wolfie is not at all agressive, but both dogs in the fight hadn't been neutered.
Almost all of the dogs that Husky Rescue takes in have never known a real home, what it is like to be a member of the family, but Wolfie does. Wolfie's family sent his bed and toys with him all the way up from El Paso. This may be the first time that a dog has come to Husky Rescue with his own possessions. Mom was close to tears over this at the adoption event.
HR has already had Wolfie neutered and his wounds from the fight taken care of. Mom is going to take a close interest in seeing that Wolfie goes to a good home, a forever home. He will make some lucky family a fine dog.
11:51 am on September 14th, 2010
SH: Let us know what happens to the husky Wolfie.
12:02 pm on September 14th, 2010
Siber-H – Wolfie Husky's plight got Mom all sniffly.
12:33 pm on September 14th, 2010
We feel really bad for that dog. It wasn't his fault, but now he is the victim.
12:43 pm on September 14th, 2010
Yeah Molly, Mom is all sniffly about it also. They will find him a good home. It may take awhile and it may not, but he has a lot going in his favor…already used to being in a house, and trained, and as mom says, he can focus. Many of the dogs that come through HR cannot focus for one second, and may have never been in a house. Their new owners have to start from square one.
I'll let you guys know what happens.
12:46 pm on September 14th, 2010
Maggie, mom also thinks he is a victim…that the other dog started the fight. Wolfie never showed any aggression toward other dogs at the adoption event.
1:09 pm on September 14th, 2010
So why did they get rid of Wolfie, seems unfair. . .
When our Mac and Franklin were intact, WHEW! The fights when the ladies were in heat! Then because some of our older ladies became older and the younger ladies were too close, relative(ly) speaking, to mate with Mac and Franklin we had both guys neutered . . . within three days they were BFF again.
Intact male dogs, when in heat females are around, have as much testosterone running in their system as 16 teenage boys!
1:24 pm on September 14th, 2010
Seems like the prior owners could have gotten both boys neutered and that would have solved the fighting problem.
2:25 pm on September 14th, 2010
If the story mom gets is correct, it was the wife that wanted to get rid of Wolfie, but the husband didn't. The other dog was a German Shepherd. As the manager of PetsMart said, (that's where the adoption event was held) he would have gotten rid of the wife instead of Wolfie.
A guy from Bassett Rescue drove Wolfie up from El Paso for us along with two Bassett Hounds.
In mom's more rational moments, she thinks a better home for Wolfie can be found than what he had. These owners had two intact males (stupid) and got rid of the one in a hurry. Still, Wolfie came with all his vet records and his shots were up to date. They seem to be okay owners in some areas of dog care. Since Wolfie is not a purebred, they couldn't have been planning on breeding him. These people bought Wolfie from a pet store when he was a puppy. Maybe the pet store passed Wolfie off to them as a purebred. Since he is not a purebred, Mom thinks Wolfie is a much easier dog to deal with than a purebred Siberian. This is in Wolfie's favor.
2:57 pm on September 14th, 2010
Here's hoping for a great forever home for Wolfie!
3:02 pm on September 14th, 2010
Barb just took me to obedience classes, as you all know. In the last class there were about 9 or 10 of us, with 6 being German Shepherd Dogs. Nothing against them (they are very intelligent), but they did tend to be more dog agressive than the other breeds there. Some eye contact, followed by growling and lunging. Maybe that was part of the problem. Also, our philosophy, always choose with the dog!
3:19 pm on September 14th, 2010
Wha!?…What does “intact males” mean??….sniff!… Oh never mind, I don’t want to know. All the stuff that happened to me before my birthday this year is mostly forgotten…grunt!…Just the way I like it. She tells me I scared the hell out of her one time when I ran away when I was just a pup out in the big open country…snort!…She thought for sure I had been eaten by coyotes or something worse…heh! …She says she finally found me, but I can’t remember the details now… grunt!
3:19 pm on September 14th, 2010
How could Huskie Wolfie's family just get rid of him when they have had him since he was a puppy?????? We just don't understand that concept. Poor fellow is probably very confused right now. Hope he finds his forever home real soon.
Sam really, really needs to get to Salem! She would win on attitude alone. We would love to see the dogs in the ear contest.
3:22 pm on September 14th, 2010
MagPie!… I don’t get your philosophy, please expound on it… snort! … or, maybe just explain it…heh!
3:32 pm on September 14th, 2010
Rio, The manager of Pet Smart said the wife wanted to get rid of the dog, and he thought the wife should have gone. We were sort of siding with him. You know, go with the dog.
3:34 pm on September 14th, 2010
Staff!… Check your email before you jet off to your next Quilting Extravaganza and TOGA party…. Snort!… We both have something to say to you….We have even more to say tonight, but because our yahoo account is crap – you will be spared….grunt!…for a while.
3:37 pm on September 14th, 2010
MagPie!…Clear As Mud!… snort!…How is the rat infestation coming along anyways???…grunt!
Oooer!…Baseball is starting…whee!…Some one will be saved by the game tonight…heh!
3:41 pm on September 14th, 2010
Wookie!… Did you give Debbie the secret message I sent you today?? …sniff!sniff!…Does she know what we are talking about??…sob!… And can she explain it?…slobber! sniff!
3:46 pm on September 14th, 2010
Rio: In one of the recent Warehouse 13 episodes they were talking about the Rockies because Myka (the female lead) is from Colorado. They were saying something about not winning of runs but winning on pitching and I think they were naming some players.
3:53 pm on September 14th, 2010
Maggie, I've seen German Shepherds in action at the dog park. Same story as what you are seeing in obedience school.
Gus&BooBear, Mom doesn't know either how anyone could get rid of a family member like that. When my folks had three dogs, the city was about to decide to limit people to two dogs. My folks were simply going to move, but the city changed its mind because of the public outcry.
Rio, an intact dog means a male or female dog that hasn't been spayed or neutered. I suppose they use that term for cats also. I know you didn't want to know, but now you know.
3:54 pm on September 14th, 2010
Rio. Yes, I did because her decoder device didn't work either. Check your decoder device because she sent a message back just a little while ago. Wookie
4:14 pm on September 14th, 2010
Thank you Siber-H. I think "intact" is a more polite way of saying many other things.
CHET!! Now that I have your attention, I hope, is it possible for you to ask Bernie to ask Spence if one of his entourage (maybe Admin) could take pictures of the winners of the look alike contest???
(aside to Sam) Then we can get Wöökie to hack into the computer and put your picture there instead of the so called winner of Princess. That's if you don't go, of course.)
4:18 pm on September 14th, 2010
Rio I read your email and sent you a reply. Hope the magic decoder is working.

Rio, Sorry to report that the rat problem is status quo. In other words, I am failing in my duties! There is still one nasty little creature out there and I have bee unsuccessful in bring this mission to an end. Every evening we do a recon, but it beats me to it's hideout. I guess this means that we wil not be teaming up with me being CKO of your organization, at least at this time. Sorry to not have more positive news to report.
4:23 pm on September 14th, 2010
Melanie, we're hoping that Spence will see my picture on the quilt and know that he has found his Princess. I do look so beautiful!
4:24 pm on September 14th, 2010
Wookie!…Major important secret message to you-know-who – please forward on….snort!… I know you are super busy making sure the Quilt arrives safely, but this could be a “life and death” thing… grunt!… Or at least a Unending Punishment Forever thing… sniff! Not ours, someone else’s…heh!
4:37 pm on September 14th, 2010
MagPie, back when we first moved into this big old drafty house, OTAS lived in the west wing (Puppy area now) while going to college. There was a mouse that would NOT get caught. He made it his duty in life to CATCH that mouse. (snicker)
He never did. The mouse moved on in the Spring but for that Christmas I made him an ornament for the tree. It was a small mouse trap with a mouse on it (not in it) and I glued some fake fur on the mouse's head so it looked like Einstein's hair.
I so love getting my children back for making me live through their teenage years.
4:37 pm on September 14th, 2010
Great idea Melanie…pictures of the winners of the look alike contests!
4:38 pm on September 14th, 2010
Hope no one will think it's a look alike contest for Peanut.

Hey everyone! I'm finally back! Mom says she has had a "Situation" to deal with and she hasn't been in the "right frame of mind" to turn on the computer for me. The only "Situation" I know of is a guy on some TV show, and Mom doesn't even watch that show, and I don't see any frames around her head at all, so I'm not sure what all that means. I'm just glad that she was in the "right frame of mind" to turn the computer on tonight.

Honk. Sniff. This is Wolfie feeling sad for Wolfie. Maybe if they added "Wigglebutt" to his name, he would get adopted for sure. My name has always been lucky for me so I don't mind sharing.
Sigh.
Mom and Dad watched the end of the Rockies game AND the Giants game. Dad is a die hard Giants fan and he is disgusted. He really, really wanted the Giants to win.

My sis advised me about your web site and how nice it is. She’s proper, I’m actually impressed with the writing and slick design. It appears to me you’re simply scratching the surface when it comes to what you’ll be able to accomplish, however you’re off to a fantastic begin!
