Knitting Up The Ravelled Sleeve

Right now I’m looking at Spence. Poor guy. He’s lying in bed, still asleep. Humans look different when they’re sleeping. Maybe even sort of better than they usually do. Sometimes I think they spend too much time in their heads. There’s a whole world out there! As for me, I’m feeling tip-top today. Possibly a bit hungry. That reminds me of National Slim Jim Day. When is that going to happen? Bernie says that whatever politician promises to make that happen is the one who gets his vote.

    B. – It's from Shakespeare. Talking about sleep, which it appears Spence is doing. Very good.

    Mollypop: Which Shakespeare…play…sonnet?

Hey….Maybe some of the poets here would like to write some sonnets. (I wish Staff would write a poem about the harvesting. Free verse….It doesn't have to be rhymed or follow a versification form.)

Okay…I have it. "Sleep that knits up the ravelled sleave of care" (Macbeth). I love it!! And Mollypop knew it and Spence used it. Wonderful!

Hi there Dawson, my dear Sister.

I knew it was Shakespeare, about sleep, but couldn't have told you what play or poem.

We are having wonderful weather here. Breezy though. If we were in Florida they would have weathermen here telling us it is gale force winds. They exaggerate so.

Since we are in North Dakota they are warning the semi drivers about 'breezy conditions'

It is only about 35 mph.

Quilting today/tonight at the Henhouse. Yip yip yippee!

I tried googling "National Slim Jim Day" and all that was mentioned was from the blog. Except one guy whose name is Jim Day.

    Sorry Chet. . .

We've thrown out one box and the entire contents of a dresser. Doing well. OTAS has now gone to get his favorite lunch from the Old Creamery down the road. BLT on wheat, with a bowl of chili and cornbread.

Mollypop: You must have remembered it either from reading Macbeth or seeing a performance. It's right after he has killed Duncan. Probably the most famous line from that scene is Macbeth saying "Sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleep." Right after that is the part taken for today's blog title. Cool!

Staff, we just started the new ( as of last May) Jack Reacher book by Lee Child. It is set in S.Dakato. Early in the book, the description of the spring floods reminded us of when you and Abbie and Alice went to help with the sandbags. The book is "61 Hours". If you've never read any of the Reacher books, you are missing a great series.

Jasper's mom here. Jazzy is taking a nap on the arm of my chair. Earlier this morning he was asleep across the back of my chair and he fell off. Doesn't seem to be hurt.

Chili: Melanie, my crockpot is full of yummo chili. House is smelling delish! Check the notes on my FB page for my easy recipie.

Shakespeare: not so much. Could never get into it. I feel like the dim bulb of the plunderers.

Reacher: love! Can't imagine his wanderer lifestyle, his only posession a folding toothbrush. Doesn't even have a drivers' license.

SPOILER ALERT——TFAT: read it all last night. Laughed at snakes and goats and a smunched vehicle and Bernies can't find 'em grind 'em at the end. I thought the dust jacket paper feels kinda fuzzy and soft. Weird, but in an okay way.

Currently reading Rosenfeldts Dog Tags. About half way thru. Not a big fan of German Shepherds as I was bit by one at age 7. I remember the policeman looking at the bite on my leg and his fingers were very cold when he touched me. Now I can appreciate the intelligence and beauty of the breed, but they still give me a little flip in my tummy when I see one.

  31. Gus and BooBear
    11:17 am on October 5th, 2010

Reacher is an exMP who is basically a wanderer. There are 14 books so far and each stands alone but if you read them in sequence there is more to appreciate. All but one has been fantastic. Mom went to his book signing at the same store as SQ. And the people all talk as if Reacher is real just like with Chet and Bernie.

Mom was at the bookstore at the airport looking for a book to take on the flight and a complete stranger came up and told her to take Reacher book that was out in paperback at that time. She figured that it had to be good if he told a stranger about it. She's been hooked ever since.

The first in the series is "Killing Floor" and the author is Lee Child.

Bee – A poem based on a picture or work of art is called an ekphrasis. Thanks to Mr. Google.

G&BB – Connelly's books are not as desolate as Child's, characters a detective and DA, sometimes working together. Silva's Gabriel Allen is an art restorer/spy who goes all over the world righting wrongs. I think they're both comparable to Child. And I confess I haven't found many books I didn't like.

  41. Jasper the Poodle

I have read Connelly as well.

Jack Reacher is an exMP who has a very strong moral compass. He is homeless and just wanders the US which is just how he likes it. He has amazing contacts in the gov't. He has no ID, which always freaks the cops out. He owns nothing but his traveling toothbrush. He seems to just be minding his own beezwax and stumbles into trouble. Oh, and he ALWAYS gets the girl(s). In 61 Hours he hitches a ride on a senior citizen bus tour that winds up in a blizzard where he saves the day, saves the town, solves the mystery and gets the girl.

  42. B.Stover
    12:05 pm on October 5th, 2010

Bluecat: You are wonderful! Thank you.

Rio: Lee Child was asked why he thinks readers keep coming back to the Reacher books and he said it's because the Reacher "hero" is similar to Robin Hood and the Lone Ranger.

Wasn't a movie made of the Killing Floor?

Also love Randy Wayne White who writes about Dr. Marion Ford, also an ex-gov't employee who is a marine biologist who lives in Florida. He is cerebral, sails, has quirky, pot-smoking friends, kills people, and always gets the girl, as well. He arrives just in time to save the day, is Mollypop fierce, yet cool as a cuke. Consistently denies he is in gov't work, but there's just something cold in his eyes that tell you there is something about him that is special. A man of many layers and dimensions.

But let me remind Missy Mom about the time the meter reader came to our front screen door and knocked instead of ringing the doorbell. I hit that door in flight and thankfully it held. Magpie, the Jack Reacher stories is as much about Lee Child's writing as the character of Jack Reacher. He has made the character (a very unrealistic character) very real. Try reading a sample chapter from the Jack Reacher website then judge. We're not surprised that Rio isn't interested, he NEVER listens to cats, but you should at least dip your toe in the pond.

Lee Child makes him real like SQ does for Chet & Bernie. And his fans are about as fanatic as we are about Chet!

Hey everybody! It took Mom awhile to turn the computer on tonight, but here I am!

With all this talk of different series, Mom was wondering if any of you are familiar with a website called "Stop, You're Killing Me"? It has just about every mystery author you can think of, along with the series — and stand-alones — they write. Each series has a short synopsis, and all the books are listed in the proper order. Anything that's still in print is linked to the Amazon page for that book, so you can get more information about each book.

You can look up books by authors or characters. Or, you can go to new releases — including hardcover or paperback — and see what's coming out in the next few months. For instance, if you go to the September releases it'll say To Fetch a Thief (Chet and Bernie #3) by Spencer Quinn. If you click on the title, it'll take you to the Amazon page for the book. If you click on the author's name, it'll take you to Peter Abrahams' page, which lists all of his non-series books, the Ingrid books, and the Chet and Bernie books, written as Spencer Quinn. It also lists all the awards he's won. It's a pretty useful site!

It was all about your “mom” at the airport and a stranger telling her about the book…grunt!…This was not the information I was asking about for Petes’s Sake!… grumble…What the Hell?…gasp!…And I do NOT IGNORE KATS!…heh!…Gawd knows I try to, but I do not ignore your kind…grump!…. In fact, I actually like BluKat…snuffle….A little.

Puss N’ Boots!…Thank you so much for your kind words about the Rockies loss …cough!…The season was a doosey in many ways. It took our minds off the sadness and heartache this year has wrought our family, but I think really this here blog and all the characters on it gave us the comedic break we needed throughout all those funerals…sob!…So thanks for that Puss N’ Boots. You both are the Kats Meow!…heh!

B.Stover, we don't know it you check the late night posts in the morning, but we hope you do. We just watched the current episode of The Good Wife. Like you, we enjoy the court cases more than the personal story (although we are getting caught up in that as well) but tonight's court case was very interesting. Hope you watched!

Dan, sleep well and get better so you can get back in rehab soon.
