Kirk Cousins and the Nation Within

One reason to root for the Redskins in the playoffs. How about a Redskins-Patriots Super Bowl? Not gonna happen, you say, Redskins not good enough? Remember Thermopylae!

Teddy says “let’s hear it for Washington!” But against the Patriots. Not so sure there, what about Beau’s Broncos?

Good morning W&T’s Dad, Whoo hoo for the Cousins! Staff, loved the foto with Keiko.

I had to look up Thermopylae and found this really neat site from the British Museum.

We cannot and will not ever be able to root for a team with a racially offensive name. That name is not an “honor”. It is a slur no less offensive than the “n” word. Just ask any Native person who has lived on a reservation, or in an area where there is a large Native population that interacts with a non-Native population. That word is used as an insult, a derogatory term to make the Native people feel less than equal.

Maybe this will be the year of the Texans!! Of course that will mean we will have to get past Beau’s Broncos.

Staff, a couple of auctions ago, you had donated a very pretty small size quilt (mostly pink) that Mom was lucky enough to win. She saved it for her first great niece who had her first birthday last October. I know her Mom used it quite a bit during that first year. Well, now Mom has 3 (yes, 3!!) great nephews/nieces that are expected next summer. Any chance you have any other quilts that you would be willing to part with for a fair price?? Or can Mom commission some quilts? We won’t know the sex of the babies for about a month. Luckily, the baby last year was a girl and the pink quilt worked perfectly.

You can SDD Mom with any particulars. If you don’t do any quilting other than for yourself, Mom will understand.

    Greetings!

Royal Mum: Relieved to hear that your procedure went well and you are back home.

I did finally finish the book I was reading. It was a good story, but it was a struggle to get through. Reading has become difficult for me now. The next book up is a book Grizz gave me for Christmas…”This Bird Has Flown (The Enduring Beauty of Rubber Soul).” Since this book is by my most very favorite band, and my most very favorite album by them, I am sure I will fly through this book.

The Dancing Giraffe shoe does now indeed include lazer lights. It is very distracting when we are trying to watch “Alaska State Troopers” on TV. We are pretty sure the Troopers just arrested a drunk Giraffe for poaching ducks.

We are having some rain and a melt today. Then tomorrow it is back to very cold temps. Have to get out there and do some poop patrol while it is not icy.

Why not change the ball team name to that of a Native tribe that is local to that area? That would not be a slur would it?

    http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2015/06/blackhawks-redskins-name/396356/

My high school sports teams were the Southwest Indians but that was changed to something else many moons ago.

  20. Barb, Maggie and Lucy

I don’t think that calling them the Germans or Italians would be insulting, but if you called them a slang term for those nationalities then it would be.

I do not think of the Chicago Blackhawks as being an insulting name, but the Washington Redskins is. I wish they would change it.

Hello all. Here is what we think about naming of sports teams. If there are people who consider the name offensive, then it is offensive and needs to be changed.
Our favorite football team is The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. I guess the stereotyping of Irish as fighters could be offensive, but we Irish Huskies and our Irish Maw do not consider it so. In fact, the reason she became a fan way back in grade school is that all good little Irish Catholics considered them “their team”. The good Sisters even had her class pray for them every Friday before school was let out. So we aren’t quite sure what this all means, but anyway, thought we’d just throw it out there.

Dawson–I’m not really near Yellowstone, but would like to see an alternative to the planned cull (I think there’s some room at our local zoo…)
Amalia–I’m happy to hear that you’re back and on the way to tip-top. That sounds like a really good giraffe show. Also, I add to the prevailing opinion on the blog about pejorative nicknames as identifiers for sports teams. Still plan on avoiding the, uh, football game.

Dawson, that was an excellent article. Thanks for posting it. Glad to know that Chicago has down a better job of being respectful than Washington has. I like the idea of a colorful black hawk for the logo.

Today I worked on putting away more Christmas stuff. Now it is just the winter decor that is left. More fun putting it up than taking it down!

Intermission from the Giraffe show, when eyes and brain have the same amount of control
Dawson – we can only speak personally, but we ourselves do not find the use of Black Hawk’s name derogatory in any way. The Atlanta Braves bothers us because of the “battle cry” and the tomahawk chop.
We also wonder why no teams chose to honor Paul Revere, Lewis and Clark (or Sacagaweah), George Washington or Florence Nightingale.
Native people are often placed in one of two categories : the Noble Savage, romanticized into fictitious levels of being one with nature, or Bloodthirsty Warriors, brutal and ruthless, therefore needing to be exterminated.
We have shared with you over the years the comments and reactions we get from non-natives; comments that make us blanche in fear of the ignorance they demonstrate. And we can guarantee that everyone knows someone who thinks that Native Americans don’t exist anymore – we call that one the “John Wayne Syndrome”.
The two of us consider it our duty to our ancestors and our contemporaries to be well-spoken, educated and socially
acceptable so that people will listen to us, and actually hear us when we speak for our people. That is the mission of many Natives, be it through art, cultural display, education or protest. We all do what we can.

Martha – feel free to use anything that might help. But Warriors could refer to any ethnic group throughout history, i.e.Vikings, Han Dynasty, Prussian, etc.
Using it as a team name is only offensive if there is a stereotype mascot or logo involved.
