Justice

Bernie’s in a real good mood today. “Justice, even a little bit, makes me feel good, big guy.”

I know that feeling, feel it a lot. We’re in the justice business, me and Bernie. When I grab perps by the pant leg – I think that’s what he’s talking about. And bringing back missing kids: it doesn’t get much better than that; except for the one time when we got there too late, but I’m not going to think about that right now.

Welcome Topaz, Oliver, Papi, Cover-Look-Alike Dude.

Ian’s human associate: email spence.quinn@gmail.com for your prize.

Good morning, y’all! Chet, do they wear pants under those robes? If you had been there, you might have had to grab the perp’s leg instead! I just pray the aftermath isn’t as bad as the prelude.

Hood Morning Kirby & Everyone. You got that right. Major headlines this morning. Quite a surprise.

Good morning everyone. We agree with Kirby. Hope there isn’t big revenge in U.S. or Europe. Bin Laden may now become a martyr for the extremists. Usually when one goes down, another one steps into his place within hours. Scary situation.

On a lighter note, WHERE IS IAN??? And how much time does he get to claim his prize? Boy, we would be all over that!

  4. Kirby T. Penworthy
    9:45 am on May 2nd, 2011

I understand that people are happy he was found, but it seems like the more we gloat over it — i.e. throngs of people shouting “U.S.A.” and a newspaper headline telling him to “rot in h-e-double toothpicks” — the more we incite the bad guys to do something back to us. As if they need any provocation!

On that same lighter note: Maybe Ian was on that secret mission to get the perp, and now that he’s finished he’ll be around to claim his prize. If not, I think some kind of “expires by” should be written into the rules for the future. Mom already has an autographed copy of the book, but she’d like to see it freed up for someone who doesn’t! (She says I can wait to be the Friend of the Month after TDWKTM comes out!)

Justice!… He went down down down in a ring of fire!…..Wooooo! …Ole Binny bit the dust, literally. …snort!

Hell!….Well, my friend is sending this post for me from the busy place…snort!… The wireless connection acted like it was working but web pages could not be displayed…grunt! … She says she will work on it some more tonight when she gets home. I am at the mercy of her posting my thoughts – which I am sure she will Edit big time…grump! because she is the best friend a pug could ever have….snort!

Bed!…Someone didn’t sleep at all last night and actually changed beds around midnight…grump!…Then she couldn’t find her keys this morning, and she forgot her sinus rinse at our house, so she had to use her extra car key and her mom let her borrow her house key…grunt!….Needless to say, it’s been quite the awful morning for someone…sniff! grumble!

I tell you — that Maggie is the “tummiest” dog I’ve ever seen! Everytime I look at her she’s on her back waiting for someone to rub her tummy! Sheesh! That wouldn’t be so bad except if someone rubs her belly everytime she wants them to, they won’t have any time to pay attention to me!!!

Rio: Change is always hard. I’m sure things will settle into a routine before too long. I hope your connection gets fixed real soon!

I’ve gotta go now. Mom has to get some stuff done before she goes to work. Every year she makes a scrapbook page for each of the players on Dad’s basketball team. The sports banquet is tomorrow night, and as usual she’s left it until the last minute, so she has to get reprints of the team picture and some supplies. Sigh. That means a late night around here putting those pages together. The good news is that she only has to do 10 pages this time — at least it’s not the football team!

Hope y’all have a great day!

Rio. I am sure things will settle down in a day or two, but you need to be extra nice to your friend until that happens. Think of it as though she is still trying to get her baseball toys properly arranged on her bed, and things won’t get settled until she has them just right.
Bear Spirit Dog — We have also seen 8 Below. It is a tough movie to watch in some respects and I certainly would not encourage anyone to watch it who has any doubts or hesitations. At the same time, much of the movie focuses on the incredible courage and tenacity of the dogs and also the devotion of certain humans to the dogs and the efforts to rescue them. Uplifting at the end, but very difficult at times along the way, so definitely not for everyone.

She went back to the busy place and put the 2 borrowed keys in a different pocket in her purse than she normally does, “so she wouldn’t lose them”….grunt!….Guess what she found in this different pocket? Yep! Her set of keys…heh! …What a dork!

That was a surprise this morning. The different news outlets are saying all sorts of things. I guess we will just have to wait to see what happens. Though I have to say that people are working on all of that.

    Message to Home Office
    Re: Plunderers
From Natasha, Vorld’s Best Undercover Spy

Mision is going better than expected. We now have all black mail photos that ve vill ever need of Commander Rio- wearing a Corgi suit. Vas PRICELESS. At von point, curly tail slipped out of zipper and von on little flower girls pulled it. But since everyvon had to stay in character NO MAATER VHAT!!! , he could not even grumble or snort. He vas forced to smile and do Happy Corgi Dance. And Natasha has all on film!
Ve think Agent Barb has new mission planning. Might be big as she is using new veapons, code named “Thunder” and “Lightening”.Plans not complete yet as she is vaiting for one more item to arrive.
Be avare new agent about to join Plunderers. All ve have found so far is that he is “he” and vill replace out-of-shape traveling agent. Ve think he vill be in Research Dept as many times is talking about his supervisor vill be Librarian.
And best news – tell Ivan his plan vork BRILLIANTLY! Plunderers are going mad vith his undercover persona “Ian”. (Really Ivan…is that BEST name you could come up vith – just dropping “V”?)Anyvay, is vonderful distraction – all Plunderers are going in circles – forgetting any mission plans. Plus Commander Rio’s forced relocation is further disrupting things., Very good plan to intercept calls to Qvest – as if not bad enough having to call REAL “customer disservice”, but to have call routed though agency vith special agents trained to make person crazy is perfect!
Of big concern – new Plunderers department Snowhook has sent team for special mission training to undercover camp. Is BIG happening. Already they have team of Vhitey-Lance/Orion that vork outside normal guidlines…alvays harder to know vhat agents like this vill do next. Now they vill have special training on top of that. Could be big headache for all at Home office. All ve have been able to find is camp is somevhere very cold – code name “Glacier”.
Regarding Home Office memo of concern – ve have NO idea how those giant holes appeared in Royal Garden. Ve saw nothing. Could maybe be like Crop Circles? Really, ve never saw anyvon in our group do anything bad like digging or piddle in Garden. No – especially not Siber. No ve didn’t see that. Only bad thing vas vhen Rio made little fart fart noises vhile under table – vaiters quickly removed all eggs from table and turned fans on. Never even made tv news.
    That is report for now
    Natasha out.

Hello Chet, Bernie, and everyone else.
Indeed, very big newes this morning. It feels very good, but its a little disoncerting to see/hear people rejoicing over death. Even if this one is entirely justified.
We were just speed-reading yesterday’s blog and we see there was talk of 8 Below. We saw that movie the day it opened. Couldn’t wait. But we didn’t know the story. It was unbearable and we wished we had never ever watched it.

YSAS has an audition for today for a Liquor commercial. Hope they don’t make him drink it. Anything that comes from wheat or barley, he throws up. Just another joy of having to be gluten free.

  21. Riö - The Evil Pug
    12:48 pm on May 2nd, 2011

8-Below!… Is that the movie where a man has to leave all his SiberH-type guys behind for some reason? Then a big storm comes in and he realizes he cannot go back for them until Spring…snort!….That is an amazing true story, but it is just a wee bit gut wrenching…sniff!

  22. Mollypop
    12:51 pm on May 2nd, 2011

Melanie – That would be exciting to be in a commercial! Years ago they couldn’t show anyone drinking in a commercial – they just held the drink. But hey, YSAS is such a trooper that he would drink it and the filming would stop before the throwing up part. That’s show business.

  23. Riö - The Evil Pug
    12:51 pm on May 2nd, 2011

Melanie!…I don’t think they use real liquor in those commercials…heh!…With all the ‘takes’ they do, those actors would be toast before the shoot was over…snort!

  24. Wookie of Chevy Chase

Rio — your recollection of 8 Below is exactly correct.

Re the commercial, I don’t think they use real liquor either. Although Rio’s comment brings back memories of the one the funniest I Love Lucy shows ever, the one involving Vita-Meata-Vega-Min. For those who never saw it, Lucy gets a chance to film a commercial for a product called Vita-Meata-Vega-Min, which is a health supplement that combined vitamins, meat, vegetables and minerals — all the healthy ingredients for life — which unfortunately for Lucy did not taste very good either, but the only saving grace (if you can call it that) being that it happens to be about 30 proof. Well, after innumerable takes, Lucy is totally blotto, slurring her words, missing her lines and exclaiming at the top of her lungs — “It’s tasty too.” A truly hilarious episode. Wookie

I remember those! We don’t have to worry though . . . his agent said “Are you lactose intolerant?” and YSAS said “no”. He gets to the audition and it says “Must eat pizza”.

Hmm . . . So YSAS calls his agent and said “In the fog of the morning did you ask me if I could eat pizza?” And she said no, because the only reason people can’t eat pizza is because they are lactose intolerant. Hmmm . . . She said why? And he said, “I’ve told you I have celiac, right?”

Turns out that he did, it’s on his stuff, but she didn’t know what that meant.

She now knows that wheat is out!

Hi O. Howlers: Did Buddy ever figure out the avatar thingy?
Melanie: So much talk of gluten free. What exactly are the symtoms? Trying to work out some diet issues hers. Have also heard some folks cannot have diary products (lactose). We know we can’t have anything with sugar in it (and there are soooo many things! trust me.) Milk does contain sugar. It is very frustrating to have to watch every single thing you eat – Depressing too.

  34. Melanie

Gluten free, hmmm. No matter what you can’t eat it’s in everything.
I remember when I asked if there was wheat in the chili, and the guy laughed and said no. He didn’t know that flour came from wheat. Anyhoo . . .

Here’s the Celiac disease website. http://www.celiac.org

Now YSAS and I didn’t have the “typical” markers. When we ate gluten we became uncomfortable. If we ate a lot of it, sick.

Now that we’ve been off it for two years if we have gluten it is an allergic reaction.
Yuck. Lots of pain and other nasty things.

Luckily just in the past year, more products are saying they are gluten free which makes shopping easier.

I look for wheat, rye, fillers, food starch, glucose syrup, malt, spelt, imitation seafood, HVP (Hydrolyzed vegetable protein), TVP (Textured vegetable protein), Caramel color, dextrin, modified corn starch. I avoid those.

Sometimes people can have a sensitivity to wheat and not CD. That would mean stopping wheat and see how you feel.

T & G’s mum found out that Progressive Soups is now making Gluten free soups. Which is great, but how much salt is in it?

Rio, yes that is basically the plot of Eight Below. Some of the Siberians that starred in Snow Dogs also appeared in Eight Below.

This is how they got the idea for the movie Eight Below: True Sad, Evil, story…The Japanese left a team of sled dogs in Anarctica. Unlike the movie, they did not go back to get them.
The good news is that dogs have now been banned from Anarctica to protect the ecosystem because they are not a natural part of it. Just as important to me, it protects the dogs from this ever happening again.

Weird story, then bed for me.

Jesse was putting the screens down in the west wing and noticed that the screws from one of the screen window sashes were taken out. Except for the ones on top. Now this is weird. It was if someone tried to get into the house by removing the screws and then they could crawl in.

That someone would have a rough time with The Pack around. So we don’t know what happened. We are also considering the beavers and the Asian want-a-be Lady bugs as perps. And where did Rocky the undercover squirrel winter over?

Jesse is fixing the sash tomorrow. The Pack is on patrol.

    B. – These eaglets can’t even walk well yet. There will be a long period of wing strengthening, over a couple of months, that will be fun to watch. They will run around the crowded nest and spread their wings. By summer, they will make a short trip to a nearby branch and back. In the meantime, the poor parents will be hauling food for three birds that will be the same size as their parents.

The wildlife people who watch this said the father could not possibly bring enough food for the three babies and took the eaglets to a refuge center. MollyPop – there are some partnerships in the wild that are loving and enduring. The male eagle most likely will go thru a period of mourning for his mate and his family, and then(hopefully) his survival instinct will kick in and hunger will trigger the automatic hunting response.
We had a lovely pair of wild swans here a number of years ago. When some stupid $#%&#$ kids killed the female, the male mourned for years, and came back alone. Then he was gone.

    Please,
No more stories of dead and mourning birds and dogs OK? Sheesh I am having a hard time with all the killing news lately. Tell me a rescue story with a happy ending instead.

My cat Gypsy was one of those who came out of the woods. Mr.Staff watched her for several weeks. (This was before we were married) She would sit up really straight at the edge of the woods and watch him back. He fed her bologna. Evidently that was the right lure. After he had her inside the house he called me in a panic one night to say she was crying and crying and wanted to be petted and should he take her to the vets? He had never seen a cat in heat before. She went to the vet that week and when we got married she became ‘our’ cat. She was with us over 15 years.

Hi Staff – You’re right. Its been that kind of day and we need to change the tone.
Everyone of us here is a rescue. Gilly and I look like siblings or mother and daughter, but as far as we know, we aren’t directly related. Basil and Sage are full brothers – litter mates who grew up to be completely different from each other, but still both lovable, mischevious and beautiful (don’t tell them we said that!)
And our Gramp’s Great Pyrenees is a giant lovable puffball who lets Gilly hang from her neck ruff, and who patrols the back yard for bears, coyotes, and crows; they are NOT allowed, so Gilly and I feel pretty safe.

I agree with Staff, a happy story is needed. Hearts hurt too much for more sadness.

Breifly, Rory a female that we rescued along with Orion was in as bad shape as Orion when they came to the kennel, just in a different way.

Orion was skin and bones and lacked socialization. Rory less thin lacked even more socialization. She was a fear biter—she bit me hard, four times the day we brought her home. I layered AJ’s leather gloves on top of leather glove as my hand became more and more injured. She didn’t know that a human, this human in particular could and did love her—no questions asked. Weeks upon weeks were spent trying to socialize our dear Rory, and slowly she did realize that she was loved and that she could love.

This year, Rory, along side Twig led the team under the burled arch in Nome. Our little rescue turned out to be a lead dog…who knew?

I called the catty librarian tonight to see if she had Dawson’s cell phone number. (We don’t think Dawson has a cell phone. I am supposed to pick her up at the airport tonight around 10:30.)
A Catty had just gotten home after driving for 6 hours from Missoula MT. She said her new cat doesn’t have a name yet but he is not a Mr.Jones which was a contender. She didn’t have time to tell me his coloring. She had to get out of the car and PEE NOW!

Hopefully more news will come tomorrow, or whenever she has a day off work.

I have to go get ready for tomorrow (quilting all day) and to make sure I get to the airport on time. The plane is on time so far.

Mollypop, thank you for the update. That poor male eagle. Too sad. I’m enjoying the rescue stories though – they help.

You guys should write a collection of stories about your animals.

After the eagle and swan stories, we were just about in tears, so glad to hear that Rory’s story has a more happy ending.

T & G, our rhubab crunch really is not puckery. When we get this cookbook put together, there will be a receipe in there for Barb’s rendition. Crunchy on the bottom, then a rhubarb custardy filling on top. Pretty darn good!

We may have to call it a night. See everyone tomorrow.

Wanna hear a good one – absolutely true.
Mama had a Corgi for 13 years that was trained to be her medical alert service dog. When she sensed that Mama was headed for trouble, she would jump at Mama’s knee and if she didn’t get a response, she would bark. If Mama still didn’t get it, she would go and get someone.
That wonderful little Corgi crossed the rainbow bridge, and we think she guided Tupper into Mama’s path. Mama was meaning to have her trained for the medical stuff, but it was a busy time at her job, so it would have to wait. But Tupper was allowed to go to work with her anyway. Mama had had Tupper for about two weeks and she was working late at the office one night. Tupper, who though loving, was kind of quiet and shy suddenly started jumping on Mama’s knee. Mama petted her and said they would go home soon. Tupper sat down, but a minute later started jumping on Mama’s knee again, and this time started barking. Mama’s boss came into the office and saw this, and realized that Tupper was doing a full medical alert. The boss helped Mama understand, and take care of the problem, and Mama was ok.
Tupper did it without any training. (She used to be a show dog kept in a crate all the time). And she has done in in the years since. We think Mama’s first Corgi spread little angel wings and whispered to Tupper what to do.

Yes! Love the Tupper story! That is what I need tonight. Thanks T&G.

I think I need a reminder about the recipes. Could someone do that tomorrow? I need to go get Dawson now.

We’ve got a suggestion for a name for the new Kat. Especially since he will live with the Catty Librarian. How about naming him for a reknowned literary Kat lover?
Charles Dickens said: “What greater gift than the love of a cat?”
What better name than Charles Dickens – or Mr.Dickens.
    hmmmmm

(oh, and p.s. – Mama’s first Corgi was a rescue too – she was a four legged survivor of Hurricane Andrew down in Florida)

Bee – we know you are gone for tonight, but you will probably catch up in the am. We have been meaning to ask you this, but the commercial just came on again, and we decided to write it down while we remembered.
There is a furniture company with a new commercial touting Kathy Ireland’s line of furniture. We know she is no brain trust, nor does she write her own lines,(or probably design so much as a folding chair) but they have her saying that the furniture is “exclusively and only at ” this company’s stores. Huh? Don’t they mean the same thing? Or are we the ones who aren’t brain trust material?

AJ just sent me a text that all the dogs are settled in on the glacier and that he said good-bye to them. He admitted that it made him sad, but said it is also a good outfit and he feels comfortable with the dogs being there for the summer.

Actually, we’re still up, T&G. Tonight was Mom’s late night at the library, and then she has to make those scrapbook pages. And on top of that, she remembered just in time that she has to bring cupcakes tomorrow for a co-worker’s birthday. The scrapbook pages are in progress and the cupcakes are baked, but I think she’s going to end up doing the frosting in the morning, which means both a late night and an early morning! (I asked her when she ever will learn not to procrastinate — she says she’ll have to think about that tomorrow!)

Kirby: Good luck with the scrapbooks. My father was a head coach of college football and each season my mother made a scrapbook. Those scrapbooks are prized possessions in my eyes.
