Inventions

“Here’s a new exercise thing,” says Spence. “Come and watch.”

Admin and Spence watch a short video. Admin’s got the leaf blower on his back, meaning leaf blowing is about to start. The noise! Can’t wait till it’s over. What’s wrong with the leaves where they are?

But back to the video. They watch, and then Admin says, “Good exercise for the dog, but how is this going to get the American people in shape?”

“Not sure that’s the point,” Spence says.

“I’m with Michelle Obama!”

“I’m sorry?”

“We’ve got to get America in shape!” Admin revs up the leaf blower and steps outside.

Well, that is pretty cool. They probably have LOTS of dogs to exercise and this way they won’t run down their volunteers. Hopefully.

Don’t see it fitting one of our Pack though!

Hi LizF! Good to hear from you.

    Loved the teaser, T&G!

    Morning all.

    Good Morning Melanie!

I could only imagine what one of the Newfs would lokk like! 🙂

Masquers, that was a very beautiful picture of Park City. The Prof is talking about taking me back there just for some R&R.

    Greetings to ALL!

Good morning Melanie, Chet, Spencer, and Admin! We love the idea of that scooter. That way Mom can’t slow us down so much.

Siber, here is a close-up of the pipsqueak’s eyes. Not sure if the colors will come thru clearly, but her left eye is part green (but mostly blue). One of our theories is that the green eye is why she was a “stray”.

    Cool pictures of Kat, Howlers.

Rio must be snowed in by now, My moderations from last night have cleared but in my haste goofed on the St.Louis forecast.

today for Denver: http://www.weather.com/weather/today/USCO0105 clearing by tonight.

Speaking of B – where is she this morning.

Hi Liz! Thanks for checking in last night.

Okay, Admin, we can see where this invention would provide good exercise for the nation within, but what about their 2-footed companions? Don’t see anything going on in that area.

The latest on Amy Winehouse is that she died of alcohol poisoning. Five times the legal limit in her system. Vodka bottles all around. Wonder how a person even stays conscious long enough to consume that much alcohol. Would think you would pass out long before that happened.

Barb&Magpie: We watched 127 Hours last night. Very good movie by director Danny Boyle, great cinematography and suburb acting, as usual by James Franco. BUT – beware of graphic scene..difficult, if not impossible to watch, as you can imagine. Also, we were expecting some extra features showing Aron Ralston. Instead, the ending scenes were very innovative. As anyone else seen it?

Good morning all. Quiet day here.

We think Thre Royal’s Mum is doing a husky piece for the auction, and that is why she needed to know eye color.

Why would the partial green eye make her a stray? Is that an undesirable breeding/show quality?

Bear, We are going to order the movie. Weird – we are getting Soul Surfer today in the mail, which is about the surfer girl who loses her arm to a shark and continues to compete. Another true story. Will let you know how that one is.

  24. Tupper and Gilly
    11:36 am on October 26th, 2011

    Good morning everyone!
Hi Barb – how was your dinner last night?

Oooo – we wouldn’t be able to watch either of those two movies. Mama is SUCH a wimp.

Today ought to be an adventure. Mama wants to redo her (old, ugly, outdated, inconvenient, dark, horrible) kitchen. She went to the place that wasn’t High last year, and they did a plan for her. It wasn’t perfect, but it was ok. She hemmed and hawed for months. Anyway, now, she put her foot down and said that the (old, outdated, impractical, ugly) dining room is coming OUT! And the kitchen is being expanded.
So, its back to the not High place with new floor plans to see what they can do. Only this time Daddy and Gramp are coming along. And the two of them are exactly alike, so as a result, they disagree all the time and tick each other off.
    Oh joy.
We’ll let you know how it goes – and who punches out who.
    (our money is on Mama)

Barb&Magpie: Those true stories will get you every time.

O.Howlers: With the Fighting Irish collar, sounds like Kat may have been a runaway. Or..on the other hand.. with her boundless energy, maybe just too much to deal with for the owner. Whatever the reason, we are glad her forever home is now with the Oley Howlers.
As to the different colored eyes..one of our favorite books is by David CLement Davies is called Fell..about a wolf with one blue eye who becomes an outcast because of the superstition surrounding this trait. Fell and a previous book, The Sight, tell of two siblings born with paranormal powers. Both are excellent books, as I may have mentioned elsewhere. Firebringer, his first book, is a classic in this genre. All 3 are highly recommended.

I don’t think that scooter loooks like fun…too confining, but I hope it works out for the shelter.

Thanks for the photo of the adorable little pipsqueak, Fellow Sibers. You could be right about why she was a stray or maybe she grew out of the little puppy stage and became too much for someone to handle and they let her go or dumped her.

Wookie and I won’t get cold at tonight’s game, but the third member of our gang needs to report in. Gasp, Rio could be snowed in. I might have to rescue him.

    12:12 pm on October 26th, 2011

Hi all! Rio’s friend here with an update. He is snowed in at home with my mother. There is no power and they are both freezing! Ha! Ha! You must think I am cruel, but sometimes revenge is sweeeet! I made it to work after getting out of town. The street lights were out completely. Transformers blew out during the night and large tree branches have broken down all over the place. It’s nice and warm here at work and I have electricity to heat my lunch. HA!

MollyPop’s Mom is not a wuss!

T&G: My money is on your mom too.

The Irish Spotted Newfs of your cyber dog children litter used to be considered non show-able. Now they can be shown. It think it has to do with the prevailing top members of the different clubs.

Also the “Sports” (not normal coloring) are the first chosen from a litter. People love their Irish Newfs. I image that also goes for other “Sports” in other breeds.

Sure was funny when they came out!!

Rio’s Friend: I figured as much when Rio didn’t report in this morning. The good news is the weather will be warming up some 25 degrees soon. I’m surprised you made it in to work this morning! Conditions here on the Island have been similar in the past. Power out for days meaning no heat. Fortunately, the neighbors have generators to help out and we have a small propane heater from Home Depot for such emergencies. You may have to p/u a generator on the way home. Poor mom and Rio. Brrrrr!!!

Oh poor Rio! He is probably shivering like crazy. And worried about seeing tonight’s game.

T&G: we are definitely betting on your mom.

Mollypop’s Mom: if you are a wuss, what would that make our mom?

SiberH: (whispering) she is still at that adorable puppy stage 🙂

Melanie: what is an Irish Neuf? Sounds like someone who would fit in around here.

BSD: Mom is the one who put the Fightin’ Irish collar on Kat…she figured its never to early to indoctrinate train!

We are thinking maybe the green in Kat’s eye would make her non “show” quality..be we wouldn’t really know as none of us are show dogs.

Buddy! grrrr….why was his avatar and name on our post?

  37. Melanie
    1:15 pm on October 26th, 2011

Buddy and T.C.: Newfoundlands: Black (can have white on their chest and belly)
Landseer: White with Black saddle, and/or head, tail, parts of legs.
Landseer is a recessive gene as are the
    Brown and
    Grey
All of these were considered normal markings for Newfoundlands (though some idiot judges wouldn’t classify Landseers as Newfs because the judges are stupid.

Irish Spotted: If both parents carry the gene, then 1 out of 4 will be Irish Spotted.
Black with white socks, and a white tipped tail. Can also have white belly and a white collar.

Amazing Grace’s last litter had 7 out of 12 Irish Spotted Newfoundlands. Those two parents really played a joke on us!

Rio. Stay warm. SiberH, Wolfie and I will watch out for you at the game. Got the tickets but it now appears possible that MLB may decide early to postpone the game until tomorrow because of the likelihood of rain this evening in St. Louis. They are meeting at 2pm, EDT to consider this, so there should be an announcement fairly soon. The Wookiemobile is tanked up and ready to go, but if there is a postponement, is everybody available tomorrow as well? Wookie

Melanie, We like the all black Newfs best. We are traditionalists.

Buddy and TC, All of us think that Kat is still at that adorable puppy stage, but the stupid person that had her might not have thought that.

  40. Siber-H
    1:23 pm on October 26th, 2011

Thanks for the update Wookie. I’m on for tomorrow if they postpone today’s game. I think it would be wise if the MLB can make that decision early rather than 2 innings into the game.

This is suppose to be a nasty storm but a fast moving storm so I assume that would true for St. Louis as well as Denver.

  45. Rio's Friend
    3:05 pm on October 26th, 2011

Rio’s friend here with a power update. Awww, well the power is still out and rampant neighborhood rumors are starting to circulate that the power will not be restored for several days. My mom says she has several layers of clothing on and can barely walk because of the bulk. She was able after many attempts to get Rio’s Coat of Many Colors on him. They are both sitting in a chair with a blanket over them staring at the ceiling and hoping I will pick up burritos for supper.

I’m sure I will make it home after work. The roads will be fine by then although maybe a little icy. I won’t be in any hurry to get there because I have a heater in my car. I hope the game is postponed or I will have to go to a local sports bar to watch it. Hmmm, maybe I should re-think that last sentence.

Oops, ha ha. Well, I hope yours isn’t anything like this was, but your picture brought back memories.

The night the storm started, I let Molly out before bed and she just stood there looking around. I was yelling for her to hurry up, because the sound of the tree branches breaking was like gun shots. Usually, Molly liked to think about whatever I was asking her to do, (she said she was a standard poodle, not a trained seal), but that night she scooted right back in, thankfully.

  60. Siber-H

Poor Rio & Gramma!!! A pugsicle for sure SnowBella!
We know what you mean about the poor trees. Some will bounce back, but others won’t. A very sad sight to see once beautiful trees and shrubs bending to the ground by the weight of the ice and snow.
MollyPop’s Mom: Gas fireplaces are a literal lifesaver in these situations. Either that or a wood burning stove.
When we had a similar storm 4 years ago all power was out, even the phone lines were down because of the ice and snow. Nana & I were finally rescued by #1 son in his 4-wheel drive truck. When you are chilled to the bone like that no amount of clothing and blankets seem to help. You would swear it is warmer outside than in.

Rio: Glad you are bundled up in your coat of many colors, which looks very dapper on you, btw. You may want to consider booties if your friend decides that a brutal walk in the snow might be fun. You may want to order one of the hats like Patsy modeled recently for your flat head. Vaya con Dios, amigo!

Rio’s friend, You may have to take Mama and Rio and check into a motel. Then you could stroll down to the bar and watch the game. Is it going to be on tomorrow instead of tonight?

The Soul Surfer movie is rated PG, so don’t think it is too graphic. Barb’s 10 and 12 year old granddaughters watched it and loved it. If it showed much gore it would be PG13.

Our forecasters are playing it safe. On the one hand they are saying 1.6 inches of snow where we live (not sure about T&G, they live down in the valley) but on the hourly forecast and the pictures it shows all rain.

I cleaned off my desk today. It was getting depressing. I had so much filing to do . . . So I took all of that and put it in a box and stuffed it in the closet.

Rio’s Friend should be getting home soon. B&M’s suggestion to maybe check in a motel is a good one. The temps are only going to go down tonight. I worry about Rio. He doesn’t have the thick fur coat that some of us bigger dogs have.

Rebecca: Your girls are on the job. Doors and windows…LOCKED!! No incidents of keys hanging outside the door.

You’ve certainly lived in beautiful and interesting places.

BTW: Belle used your debit card for a little on-line shopping last night. 🙂

Rose: Oops, no warm jacket and the temps in Park City are, of course, much cooler due to the higher elevation. Very cold at night..not warmeing up until he’s ready for the return trip. (isn’t that always the way) I wonder what Belle Starr bought on-line? Maybe it’s a surprise for Rebecca.

Egads! I just realized Rio & Friend won’t be able to post from the house with the power being out. No iPaw either, right? This is going to be a long night.

Masquers: The Prof will be coming home to a cold Westchester. I believe that high temperature on Saturday will only be 48 degrees. Belle made leave the room while she ordered, and she’s been mum about her purchase….

The girls and I just had some cookies and milk, and now we are all snuggled under the blankets with a good book.

Rio’s Friend: Stay safe, and I hope for Rio’s sake your power comes back on soon.

A good and peaceful night to all!

I picture Rio and his friend’s mother jumping in the warm car as soon as she gets home from work. Then going to get a hot meal before checking into a motel for the night. They will let us know they are safe and sound before turning in for the night.

Rio and Friend: Oh my. That snow looks terrible. I hope you find a way to stay warm. The hotel idea sounds like a winner.

Melanie: I cleaned off my desk and a few shelves today and it took forever. I wished I’d used your method.

Mollypop: Wow. Talk about devastation. Did those trees survive?

I’ve been running around getting things done so that I’m ready to leave Friday. I have a week long work related course to go to before I head down to the States.

An optmistic outlook is that Rio’s friend made it home safely from work before the roads started freezing over. That is very possible. The weather radar shows that the snow has moved out of Denver so they will be salting and sanding the major roads all night long and should be able to get them in pretty good shape.
The power outage is another story. It is 27 degrees in Denver now.

Hi hi, g’day g’day! Yes it’s spring here, not so warm yet as we’ve just had a chilly snap. Not chilly like you though!

Those storms with all that damage sound really scary.

I hope Rio and family thaw out sometime soon.

Mollypop’s mom, i didn’t get a chance to send my sympathies when you told Molly’s story the other week – it was so sad to read. I hope you’re doing okay.

    52 in Michigan…that’s pretty damn cold…

Oh, the weather in Denver is frightful,
But pugs make it so delightful.
And since they’ve no place to go,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let it Snow!

Rio’s Friend needs to take care while driving,
    And buy tacos for eating,
There won’t be any lights to glow,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let it Snow!

When it finally comes to go nite nite,
Rio and Friend will curl up real tight,
And Rio will under the covers go,
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let it Snow!

Great song Melanie – but dam it, bite your tongue! NO SNOW!!!!

So the great trip to the “not high” store:
Two know-it-all men, having a pissing contest of ego – each deciding what would be best for MAMA’S kitchen. And keep in mind that neither of them can or will cook.
So, when they wandered off to look at veneer samples, Mama worked with the designer real quick, told her to ignore the two ill-mannered jackasses, and came up with a floor plan for the new room.
The computer program they have is way cool – they can plug in the cabinets and move them around and then show you a moving 3-d full color depiction of the finished room.
So Mama has her dreamy kitchen – now she just has to dream up a way to pay for it. Thanks heavens that store gives 10% veterans’ discount – the Horrible Orange Box doesn’t – so poo on them. (Besides, we don’t like the way they treated our friend Macy’s Mom!)

Long day – now Mama is relaxing by baking cookies. May need to send a C.A.R.E. package to a certain shivering little puglet.

That’s the way to do it, Royals’ Mum!

I am off to bed. Zoë made an appointment about 6 months ago and is trying to figure out why she thought it was a good idea to make it for 8:30 am. This means she will be up and out the door by 7:30 am. Which means I have to be functioning.

    Snickering here, maybe just awake.

Oh dear – we are here all alone. Was there a mission to go get Rio? A mission that we missed out on?

Well, we’re kind of scared of being left alone, so we are going to bed. G’night to all

And g’day to Liz – we’ve missed you. And how is the lovely Cricket?

Rose: If Professor Cicle can’t take the cold, there is (or was) an outlet mall in Park City. He would have passed the turn off as he was driving up the canyon to PC proper.

Alice and Abbie got to go to see Dr. Mike today. He was very nice to them as always but they say there were very happy to return to the farm.
WE just got back from the local Lutheran Church. It was the annual auction of donated items. (Mr.Staff and I went because the game was postponed.)
Gosh Rio and Mom and Rio’s friend are having an exciting day today. I hope all the excitement is over. Exciting times are only fun long afterwards.

Tomorrow I go to the (extra long)weekend Quilt retreat! Goody!
Hope Rio and friend are warm before too long.

Hi T&G, the lovely cricket is indeed lovely, thank you. And very well. She has new herbal tinctures from the naturopath and is much more mobile, my opinion, she’s taking me for longer walks and having fewer rests. Cool!

First off I want to say great blog! I had a quick question that I’d like to ask if
you do not mind. I was curious to know how you center
yourself and clear your head before writing. I’ve had difficulty clearing
my thoughts in getting my thoughts out there. I do take pleasure in writing but
it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are lost just trying to figure out how to begin.
    Any suggestions or tips? Cheers!
