Indie Next
“Guess what,” says Spence.
“You know I hate that,” says Admin. “If you’re going to tell me, just tell me. Let’s not have a quiz.”
Uh-oh. The morning is off to a bad start. Maybe this is a good time to mention that Bernie thinks that if there’s National Bacon Day – how come I missed that? – then why not National Slim Jim Day? To make this happen he says we have to get our hands on the levers of power, wherever those are. He has some sort of plan – Bo Obama’s part of it. Oh, wouldn’t a Slim Jim right now be nice?
“OK,” Spence is saying: “To Fetch A Thief is an Indie Next pick for October. Indie Next is this quite short list the independent book stores put out every month with their top choices and – “
“I know what Indie Next is,” says Admin.
“How much coffee have you had?”
“Not sure.”
They look at each other in an unfriendly way. Once they actually threw down, kind of a funny story, but maybe for another time.
“You like Mr. B., the editor, right?” says Spence.
“Yeah.”
“He says all three books in the series have been Indie Next picks, which is sort of unusual.”
“Humph,” says Admin, or something like that.
“I’m going for a walk,” Spence says.
“Bye.”
“Bye.”

Bacon! Sounds pretty good to me. Bye.
4:17 am on September 13th, 2010
Good morning, everyone. We're back. Barb said she had a great weekend. Went to a princess-themed b-day party for 4 year old Lyla Sat. Really cute! Then Sat. night had a great dinner at a Lake Geneva resort. Sunday went for a boat ride on Lake Geneva with 2 of her 3 kids, spouses, and the 5 grands. Got back to get me at the B & B last night. Long but enjoyable weekend.
Thank you for the wonderful b-day toast from Melanie and Patsy. Why is the glass empty? Rio, Barb said she saw you card, but her speaker is not working, so later she is going to stop at an office in town and borrow the computer for a minute so she can listen to the e-card. Thank you for sending it! Hope all works out with the she-Pug.
Chet,Bernie & Spence, Congrats, on TFAT being picked for the Indie Next! BBL
4:26 am on September 13th, 2010
Rivalry between Admin and Spence…….Go Spence!! What does "threw down" mean? I love the term "levels of power." Congratulations on the Indie Next pick.
4:32 am on September 13th, 2010
Threw down or throw down means fight or duel. Ever watch Throw Down with Bobby Flay on Food Network?
4:44 am on September 13th, 2010
Hey Chet, Congrats on the Indie pick.
Alice J.
4:44 am on September 13th, 2010
B, Invatation to fight. Could come from "throw down the gauntlet".
4:58 am on September 13th, 2010
Thank you Jasper. (I have not watched that show.)
Thank you B&M. That origin makes sense. I'm glad you had a good birthday yesterday Barb.
5:01 am on September 13th, 2010
Chet, without you, those guys would have nothing. I suggest you go straight for the bacon and Slim Jims. They can fight it out while you snack.
5:09 am on September 13th, 2010
Sam is correct Chet.
However, instead of arguing and throwing down and going for walks and drinking coffee, time would be better spent writing. (Now that does sound like an English teacher!) And I meant "levers of power" earlier.
5:34 am on September 13th, 2010
Spence: Take Chet with you on your walk.
Barb: Happy Belated Birthday and glad you had a lovely time with (most of) your family.
Yesterday I travelled to the big city of Prince George so I'll have to catch up on the blog. Then meetings. BBL
5:36 am on September 13th, 2010
Oooo. I was just going to mention the levers of power. But B. got out her red pencil and fixed it up.
Dawson, you got out of town! Must look up Prince George on the map.
The Librarian is thinking about a set of Ingrid for her 11-year-old Goddaughter. In paperback with recipes. Me, I'm just going for the bacon. The recipe is "Cook in pan. Not too long." I like it in between limp and crispy.
6:02 am on September 13th, 2010
Indie Next: So many good books…
6:04 am on September 13th, 2010
FK: I never use a red pencil.
6:08 am on September 13th, 2010
Finally!… Someone is home today and not feeling tip-top because of her sinus’s….grunt!… All the crap in the air is making her miserable. Talk about being grumpy….yeesh!
Smack Down!… My money is on Admin…snort!… Spencer could be snapped like a twig in Admin’s death grip…heh!
6:08 am on September 13th, 2010
Melanie: That's a great picture of Patsy with wine glass. Have you considered marketing "Newf cards"? That would be a bestseller.
Staff: The quilt is off! Hip Hip Hooray!
6:10 am on September 13th, 2010
Melanie: Oh yeah. Hope Dan settles in and then works hard to get out of Rehab. He's stubborn so he has that going for him.
6:12 am on September 13th, 2010
Sam: Perfectly said.
FK: The Pack agrees with you on how to cook bacon.
INDIE NEXT! Never knew it existed. Pretty cool list.
Waiting to hear when they are moving Dan.
6:15 am on September 13th, 2010
Just looked up Prince George in Canada. Two rivers run through it. (snicker)
Also LOTS of train tracks.

Off to a meeting. Mustn't blame the dog for being late. 🙂

My Mom is still under the weather from that infection caused by that bad dental work. Today is the last day of the antibiotics. Luckily these clouds that we've had for over a week are sort of going away, Mom is a big believer in vitamin D and hopes to be able to get a lot of it today.
Rio – That cute little girl Pug needs a forever home. I know what a big heart you have!
6:45 am on September 13th, 2010
MollyPop, tell your mom to feel better and if that infection is still there, to tell the docs to find the right anti-biotic!
Jeez. They should pay for it also.
7:42 am on September 13th, 2010
Chet!! I'm the one that told you about National Bacon Day. THEY DIDN'T PASS ON THE MESSAGE TO YOU! THEY CAUSED YOU TO MISS NATIONAL BACON DAY! They need more training.
Sam, my very dear little friend, has a very good suggestion, Chet. See her message above. Us dogs have to stick together over important things like bacon. So, what day shall we declare to be National Slim Jim Day? The nation within a nation doesn't need any help from the powers that be to make our own holidays.
7:49 am on September 13th, 2010
Mom says to say congratulations on the third indie pick. As soon as I calm down over Chet missing National Bacon Day, you can add my congratulations to moms.
8:03 am on September 13th, 2010
Fall has arrived. Our neighbor called to tell us we had a flock of wild turkeys under our apple trees. By the time I had gotten the camera, they were leaving.

8:05 am on September 13th, 2010
Molly, your mom may need to get back to a dentist or doctor. We want her to feel better. I'm working up to thinking that dentist needs more than just a pant leg grabbed.
Happy Birthday a day late, Barb. I'm glad you had a nice one!
8:06 am on September 13th, 2010
Later while we were eating lunch and the dogs were inside, Jesse (our go to guy, now spraying insulation foam in the basement) said they were by the fence.
Ran and got the camera again ( I should keep it with me all the time) they were down by the bridge. This time I got more of the flock. These are young birds.

Barb just got back from town and stopping by the office to listen to her card from Rio. She said it was the best and funniest card she got. She thought the "skirrl" was just going to be singing Happy Birthday to her. She had no idea that it was going to be a personalized message. She said she was crying, she was laughing so hard. Wish I could have heard it, cause she said Rocky mentioned me, too. Thanks from both of us, Rio!
8:11 am on September 13th, 2010
Barb!… You are welcome my dear….snort!…I’ll tell Rockie he did a good job!…heh!
Melanie!…Do you think those turkeys will be fat enough by the time Thanksgiving rolls around??… grunt!… Next time you shoot them, well, never mind….gruff!
8:14 am on September 13th, 2010
I think they are fat enough now, Rio.
8:14 am on September 13th, 2010
MagPie!…Did you see Rockie in his monkey suit?….heh!…He and his hillbilly pals are guarding the delivery of The Quilt you know….snort!
8:26 am on September 13th, 2010
Rio, We missed that one. Was it from yesterday?
8:32 am on September 13th, 2010
Siber-H: I think if you bit into one of those birds you would find mostly feathers. Best to wait a year.
8:33 am on September 13th, 2010
Rio, Went back to yesterday's posts and found it, will listen to it later since we have no sound here.
8:40 am on September 13th, 2010
I am back from being poked, running errands and mailing the quilt. It is Priority Mail and expected date of arrival is the 15th. That is Wednesday. I have insured it for 200.00 and I have asked for delivery confirmation.
No goats were sited anywhere near the post office although there are some cattle about 1//4 mile away. They belong to Alton and he gives us some beef so maybe those steers hold a grudge.
Hard to say.
It is really good beef.
8:41 am on September 13th, 2010
Not sited, Sighted. (((sigh)))
8:43 am on September 13th, 2010
Dear Staff, very good job and after being poked and prodded. That is not pleasant.
I don't believe that steers have grudges. . . at least, not like Kats.
9:09 am on September 13th, 2010
How exciting! The quilt is on its way.
Melanie: Are those turkeys still destined for Thanksgiving dinner even though they are wild? (There is a turkey farm several miles from me. As I recall they have white feathers. It's sad the way they all….and this is hundreds…come up to the fence and watch the traffic drive by. Near the end of December the area is just about barren of turkeys.)
9:26 am on September 13th, 2010
Mom and I sometimes have Tofurky dinner at Thanksgiving. Not every year, but sometimes. It's actually a nice change and totally conscience guilt-free.
9:28 am on September 13th, 2010
Melanie and Wolfie, Did you get your seeds today?
We had farm raised wild turkey last year and did not care for it.
9:33 am on September 13th, 2010
Chet!….Did you hear!??…The Quilt is on its way!….snort!… Oh Boy! Oh Boy! Oh Boy!…Please keep a sharp eye out for it and chase away any marauding goats you see in the vicinity….grunt!… I doubt any will get by Rockie, but you never know when that squirrel will get up to his monkey business during working hours!…grunt!
9:40 am on September 13th, 2010
Not on my table, B.Stover. I have no idea when turkey season is around here. But the wild turkeys are much smarter than the farm turkeys (white feathers). They disappear once the season starts.
I once had a farm turkey fall in love with me, but that's a story for another time.
Barb & MagPie: the mail has not arrived yet. Looking forward to seeing if they are there!
10:07 am on September 13th, 2010
Hey Barb,
I notice you also sent me some bunching onions. Are they the same as multiplier onions or walking onions? I have those in my garden and they are hardy even here in Zone three. A neighbor gave me some about 10 years ago.
Every so often I move them in the garden as they are hard to weed around.
I am sending you a file about the ones I have by the secret decoder thingy that Rio uses.
He thinks he is so smart!
10:11 am on September 13th, 2010
Nice!…knowing you too Staff!…grunt!
10:13 am on September 13th, 2010
Alton? Alton Brown?
10:14 am on September 13th, 2010
heeheehee, I am so scared!
10:15 am on September 13th, 2010
Jasper,
No a neighbor,
Not Alton Brown.
Staff
10:24 am on September 13th, 2010
Jasper!…That’s who I thought she was talking about too!…snort!…Alton Brown, our fave!…sneeze!
11:32 am on September 13th, 2010
I'm typing this on a new laptop. It's very fast. Hopefully my name will be white and not blue.
Melanie: I'd like to know about the turkey who fell in love with you.
12:00 pm on September 13th, 2010
BARB & MAGPIE!!!
The seeds have arrived. Now I need to find a safe place for them that I will remember in the Spring! All the info about the seeds were much appreciated. We have decided to NOT put them where the Ben Franklin tomatoes are since they are still green and not turning red yet.
B. Stover: you are in white and I'll tell you about the turkey later. Right now, Zoë and I are going to do "A Touch of Frost."
12:12 pm on September 13th, 2010
I really enjoyed Touch of Frost. Right now I'm going to watch the latest episode of Rubicon.
12:38 pm on September 13th, 2010
Melanie, Glad they arrived, safe from any marauding goats or turkeys.
Did you have this year's tomatoes in a spot where they got at least 6 -8 hours of sun per day?. 6 is sort of a minimum but they do better with full sun. Ours did fine, and they were in a spot with about 9 hours.
12:50 pm on September 13th, 2010
Melanie, Cool, dry but not freezing place is best.
12:58 pm on September 13th, 2010
Yawn!… Stretch! I’ve been sleeping with my friend most of the afternoon ….snort!…I’m pretty sure I wasn’t snoring at all, not this time….cough! …Are we talking about tomatoes again??…yeep!
1:07 pm on September 13th, 2010
I've been taking care of my Mom all afternoon. A friend called to go for a walk, fine with me, but she was too tired. So the friend came over and we all lounged around – they talked yakkity yak.
Rio – I talked to Mom about me posting the picture of her magical tooth screw. (Of course she took a picture for posterity.) Mom said only if your friend would let you post the picture of her toe.
1:54 pm on September 13th, 2010
I vote for tooth and toe.
Cool and dry . . . easy here in this house. At least in the winter.
B.Stover: I had goats (cute things one was named Blackberry) and I decided to get a male goat (never again). I had a friend who had a male Nubian he wanted to sell, so I went to his farm.
He and his wife were showing me around the farm and there he was, a LARGE white male turkey. Turkeys are not that pretty. Well, at that point we were sitting in chairs grouped together and the male turkey puffs himself up and spreads his wings and waddles around in front of us.
He waddles and waddles and waddles and waddles. It got weird. We started saying well, he's attracted to one of us. And we started laughing and got up. The turkey waddled behind us. And waddled and waddled all puffed up and his wings out stretched. This continued all through our walking around. We finally decided to split up to see which of us the turkey was courting.
Of course it was me. That turkey waddled after me THE WHOLE TIME! I decided to get the male goat. Not the best idea I've ever had, but as I was leaving in the car . . . that turkey just stood in the middle of the dirt road, puffed up and watching me leave.
I felt sorry for him!
2:11 pm on September 13th, 2010
Oh no! It looks like Staff took regular insurance and not the special Marauding Goat Attachment. MagPie! Please check with Barb if this is okay.
Siber-H said Rockie has been drinking and Melanie even posted proof of it. The quilt could be in trouble. Oh dear oh dear. What to do!
2:24 pm on September 13th, 2010
Toe!… A tooth for a toe??…hmmm….I tried , but I don’t think I can talk her into doing it…snort!…She hates her feet and posting a very ugly toe(s) on this page just seems wrong… grunt!
Sammie!… I am trying very hard not to connip over the delivery of the Quilt and you are not helping with your astute observations about Rockie….gasp!… I sure wish Kirby would be here when the Quilt arrives to celebrate with us… sniffle!
2:27 pm on September 13th, 2010
Melanie!…. You broke that poor turkeys heart!…sob!… He will forever think you choose a Goat over Him….snort!
2:27 pm on September 13th, 2010
I vote for no toes or teeth, but I could post a picture of my tummy scar. NOT
2:30 pm on September 13th, 2010
Melanie: That is strange. Have you ever heard of a turkey doing that before?
Why do people want to see teeth and toes?
Rio: Rubicon is really getting interesting.
2:36 pm on September 13th, 2010
Rio,
I am making tomato pie for supper.
(Never made it before, Mr Staff found the recipe. We shall see. At least it has two pie crusts. How bad can it be with our own tomatoes and our own onions?)
2:46 pm on September 13th, 2010
Stover!…We watched Rubicon today and are still scratching our heads over the whole Atlas connection… snort!… What a horrible job that makes you go to horrible countries and witness horrible things… ugh!
Staff!… Are tomatoes the only thing you can taste?…sniff!… You eat tomato soup when you go out for lunch, you eat tomatoes on toast, you grow all kinds of bizarre tomato plants and then you make pies out of them… grunt! …I don’t eat tomatoes, I spit them out if one happens to land in my bowl!… grunt!… Hey, speaking of my bowl, I need some dinner dammit!…gruff!yeep!gruff!
2:50 pm on September 13th, 2010
Don't know much about tur . . keys. . .
(tune should be Don't know much about History, snicker)
Have no idea B.Stover. Don't ever want to have it happen again. Was embarrassing!
Unplugging the computer! Thunderstorms tonight.
2:57 pm on September 13th, 2010
I sure wish Kirby could be here to celebrate with us also. Mom says Kirby has cute ears. Whatever, dog ears are dog ears to me, but I miss Kirby.
I see Sam is taking my reports of Rockie's drinking seriously. Rio is in denail about Rocky's problems.
2:57 pm on September 13th, 2010
Newfs!… I wonder how the Newfs handle the thunderstorms?…snort!… Has Melanie ever told us?….grunt!….I know my friend gets really scared and we have to go down in the basement till all the BoomBoomBang is over with…heh!…Be careful Bess ole girl, don't get struck by lightning!…sniff!
2:59 pm on September 13th, 2010
typo on denial up there…sigh
3:02 pm on September 13th, 2010
SiberH!… Just for the record, I am not in “denail” of Rockie and his off-hour antics…snort!
3:02 pm on September 13th, 2010
Staff: I'd like the recipe for tomatoe pie, or the site where I can find it…please.
Rio: James Wheeler (Rubicon) seems to be in big trouble. I have a feeling that Atlas is a group started by the seven who were boys together and are in the picture. In Greek mythology, of course, Atlas holds the heavens on his shoulders. That seems to be the attitude of Spangler and the other members of Atlas. Tom Rumour became disenchanted with it as did James Wheeler.
3:10 pm on September 13th, 2010
Sam, Barb will have to check. She isn't sure whether maruading goat damage is covered under standard property damage, or if you need a specail Marauding Goat Endorsement. Most times skirrls and racoons are excluded, so more research is needed.
3:21 pm on September 13th, 2010
Atlas! …shrugged…snort!… It does seem to employ a lot of very powerful people who seem to control how the world is run…shudder!…Very scary stuff. I can’t help wondering if the real Analysts are like the 4 we see on the show…gulp!…Even more scary stuff…grunt!
Insurance!…The only insurance against marauding goats is Rockie and his Hillbilly Gang!…cough!… I’m telling you guys! As long as Admin and Spencer do not leave any half empty wine bottles or fancy food in their trash cans, all will be A-Okay… snort!…Rockie has a weakness for good food and wine, just ask Wookie!…cough!
4:00 pm on September 13th, 2010
The Wookster is on the case, so don't worry. I've got Rockie's backside covered and am checking all nearby garbage cans to make sure there are no tempting libations to distract him. Equally important, we need to make sure no harm befalls all the miniature cameras and transmitters Staff so craftilly embedded in the quilt. This is serious business, but we will definitely prevail. 00Wookie .
4:04 pm on September 13th, 2010
Wookie! Wookie! I feel so much better. I wasn't sure I could sleep a wink tonight. All my rhinestones, gold thread, and tiny tiara will be safe.
4:10 pm on September 13th, 2010
Barb says she thinks you guys have everything under control and no further insurance coverage is needed. Rio, Wookie, and Rockie should be able to handle this situation and get the quilt delivered safely.
Barb is still tired from her weekend and wants to go to bed and read. Good night!
4:27 pm on September 13th, 2010
Wonder what SQ/PA will think of the quilt? We bet he/they will think it's very special! Hopefully with no goat tracks on it. We feel like Sam…Thank goodness 00Wookie is on the case….don't have alot of faith in Rockie, even though Rio thinks he's top notch. We KNOW Wookie is (unless Audrey is close by…but who can blame a fellow for that?)
Rio didn't mention the she-pug today…is she in or out?
4:30 pm on September 13th, 2010
Does anyone remember what day the instructions for creating the avatar with the picture was posted? We didn't have the computer hooked up then and aren't smart enough to do that on the IPhone, but we need to get with the program.
Also, kindle users, are they worth it? Mom is seriously thinking about getting one.
4:31 pm on September 13th, 2010
Where is Kirby??????????
4:35 pm on September 13th, 2010
Puss N’Boots!… You are in good company, Chet still doesn’t have his Avatar set up!…heh!…It’s not like he is busy on the Astrid case or anything either!…grunt!
Guys!…Go to http://www.gravatar.com and follow the simple directions. Click on the big button that says something like “Get your Avatar today”…snort!
4:41 pm on September 13th, 2010
YES!… Agent 00Wookie is on the Quilt case!… snort!…At first I feared his arthritis would not let him help out the Squirrels. But he is a hero and will not sit idly by and let anything bad happen to our special gift to the awesome Author(s) ….sniff!
{{{I’m confident that the miniture kameras are in the quilt exactly as we need them}}}
4:48 pm on September 13th, 2010
Well Rio, I only put on 8 'baseballs' but they are in every possible place on the quilt.
I am sure we have covered all the 'bases' camera-wise.

G&BB: I think that the Kindle is really worth it especially since you can get one now for $139. It's very convenient, holds many books, things are delivered by "Whispernet" in under a minute, you can change font size, it has a search engine and a dictionary.
4:58 pm on September 13th, 2010
Totally awesome, Staff!!! Thank you so much from "Team NoTalent" for all your hard work. We love it and love the tag you've added.
Thank you, Rio!! We now have a picture avatar! And you didn't answer the question about the she-pug….in or out?
5:00 pm on September 13th, 2010
BStover,
I have requested the tomato pie recipe from Mr Staff. I should be able to send it to you tomorrow.
Staff
5:01 pm on September 13th, 2010
Thank you, B. Mom just hates to get rid of her books and has quite a library here at home, but she's running (actually has already RAN) out of room so maybe the Kindle would be worth it. Plus she could still have some real books.
5:03 pm on September 13th, 2010
Gus and BooBear,
That label was written by Wookie's Mom, Debbie LM. I was just the printer. I was going to put on a very boring one but thankfully I asked her opinion. Just shot that right back at me, and except for somehow moving the word 'delightful' two words after where it was supposed to be, it is all hers!
She is good isn't she!!!

Oh!…Is this the “Label” that will be on the back of The Quilt???… sob!sob!sob!…This is so good! Thank you ever so much Debbie LM and Staff!… sniffle!….How can mere words every express my gratitude to you guys!…choke!
5:09 pm on September 13th, 2010
Yes, she is! Thank you Wookie's Mom!! Team No-Talent thanks you too (you created our block for the block so we wouldn't be left out and at the last minute too!) Considering that those of you actively making squares and piecing the quilt are miles apart, it's amazing the whole thing came together.
As Chet would say, Hat tip to you all!!
5:09 pm on September 13th, 2010
The label is great. Thank you staff and Debbie. And thank you for the recipe Staff.
G&BB: You don't have to get rid of books because you have a Kindle. I have lots of books and still get them. I use the Kindle for convenience especially when traveling, or reading "on the road."
5:10 pm on September 13th, 2010
Oops..typo up there. Should read "created our block for the quilt".

Puss N’Boots!… I have never been told straight out what the decision was or what the variables were regarding the decision, but here is a post from last night that you may have missed or just missed the intended meaning of….snort!
“She-Pug!… I have no idea what was decided… snort!….The last I heard was a conversation between her and her mother….sniff!… My friend said, “She looks alot like Rio”…Her mother responded with, “Yes, she does look alot like your Rio, but what if she also behaves like him? What will you do then?”….snuffle!… I still have not heard the final decision… grunt!….But I think that may have been the deciding factor.”

The Tigers actually won. But the Rockies with 10 wins in a row – or is it 11 now – they are the big story.

One of the attendees of the meeting today is from Haida Gwaii and she brought fresh crab, halibut, salmon and smoked salmon. It was unbelievably delicious. My tummy is bulging.

Barb: Yes! The seeds arrived today and it was a wonderful surprise!! (At least, my mom was thrilled. I was hoping for some you know what!) But mom is very grateful for the instructions and all the special surprises! We have plenty of sunshine here in the Sierra Foothills. It is usually 100+ in the summer.
We are envious of y'all who have storms and rain and Real Weather!
Staff and Debbie – the label is awesome. And the quilt is magnificant!! I'm sure that Chet will adore it.
Where is Kirby???????
And where is Lexi?????
Melanie – I am glad that Dan is going to rehab. And I am glad that he is feeling better.
Night all.
