Spence has expressed my thoughts.
Good morning all.
8:56 am on September 22nd, 2012
May both men’s spirits meet in the next world and share exciting stories of all the adventures they had and stories of their loved ones they left behind.
Peace and comfort to family that is grieving. Wrap the quilt tight around shoulders and know that both men are at peace.
Take a moment to feel the love that we all have for you.

Mom is going to re-read For The Love of Puppies today in Dan’s honor.
9:28 am on September 22nd, 2012
To Melanie, Zoe and family and CHH: Our thoughts are with you, our love surrounds you. May you find some comfort in knowing those who are so dear to you have gone on in peace.
9:30 am on September 22nd, 2012
Melanie and Zoe and family, CHarris and family: I have no doubt the spirits of your loved ones are feeling free to be loose of the restraints the earthly life had lately put upon them. My care and concern go out to you all.
Like Gus & Boobear I will re-read For the Love of Puppies to remind myself what a full life the soaring Raven Author had.
9:45 am on September 22nd, 2012
Everyone above has expressed our feelings so well. We wish both Melanie’s family and CHH’s family comfort, peace and love.
9:56 am on September 22nd, 2012
We too will be reading For the Love of Puppies as a tribute to the Raven.
CHH: You are in our thoughts. Love and hugs to you.

When Katherine Kubler-Ross was terminal, an interviewer asked her if she was afraid, now that her own death was imminent.
She was surprised by the question.
“Good heavens, not at all. When you think about it, death is life’s last great adventure, and quite frankly, I cannot wait to go dancing through the galaxies!”
10:06 am on September 22nd, 2012
That quote was from mom. As for me, I was so upset by the news that I accidentally chased a black and white striped squirrel. For some reason, I don’t smell so good. Neither does Gus.

Sigh.

To Melanie, Zoe and Family, and C Hobbit:
My condolences to you during this difficult time.
When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.

Wolfie – I think the Raven would appreciate the way you “celebrated” his life.
10:19 am on September 22nd, 2012
Melanie, Zoe, and family and CHarris. Our condolences. We are very sorry for your loss and all of you are in our prayers and thoughts.
10:24 am on September 22nd, 2012
Wolfie, I agree with what Bluecat said about how you celebrated Raven’s life. I would do the same if mom would let me and didn’t watch me like a hawk during the hours of darkness
10:26 am on September 22nd, 2012
Wolfie and BlueCat – thank you both for the quotes. We have heard neither before, but are writing both down for safekeeping.
(and Wolfie – Tupper says to tell you that the skunk odor remover carried by Agway does a pretty good job, especially when followed up with orange scented Dawn dishwashing liquid)

Oh Wolfie!
I had forgotten that For the Love of Puppies starts out with a very sad incident. Whaaaahuh huh huh! Sob, sob, sniffle, sniffle, hooonk!
T&G Thanks to your mum and dad for being there for Melanie and Zoe and for the prayer last night.

Dawson – it is our honor to be a part of that family. Its not everyone who is accepted by The Pack. Or their Leader.
We are now unpacking from the Great and Wonderful Lobster Fest at the Beach. Does anyone know how to get sand out of a Corgi….?

The Bridge: A Gift for Melanie, Zoe and CHarris
“We got a two-legged!”
“Well, that’s not something you see every day!” Rough housing ended among several dogs, naps were happily interrupted, and a certain cat uncharacteristically ignored a slice of cheese. Gathering close, shoulder to shoulder, floppy ear to floppy ear, they watched as the form of a Raven, ushered by many other ravens took the shape of a man.
“Hey, Dan! Welcome! I’ve told everyone about you. Writer, war hero, great father, great husband, you know—the truth. Good to see you, good to see you,” the large, black Newfoundland welcomed his friend with enthusiasm and sincerity. It had been a long time since they shared the same side of the Bridge. “Bagel?” Softened with drool, the Newf nosed half a bagel toward Dan’s feet, “They hang from trees here, you know.”
“Bear! Buddy!” Dan ran his hands into the warm mittens behind the Newf’s floppy ears. “Before we talk bagels, I have one question.”
Jowls remaining in place, Bear raised his eyebrows. Go on, then.
“Do you mind telling me where I am? I thought the hereafter would contain…a few more… humans.”
“We, uh,” with a wag of the tail, he motioned to the four-leggeds surrounding man and Newf, “called dibs on you, just for a short while.”
“We couldn’t help ourselves,” said Bess, one of Dan’s favorite girls, as she lifted his forearm with her snout guiding it to rest over her shoulder.
For a moment, he saw only her, “Bess! You good girl!” She leaned her head into the ear scratch. It was like old times—for both of them.
Moving as one body, the pack of felines and canines ushered Dan a few feet to a large couch draped in a coverlet. It was the color of wine and just like the Newfs’ couch at home. Dan smiled at the familiarity. He sat, flanked on either side by Bear and Bess, overlooking the Bridge. The education of Dan began.
He looked down, no longer staring at the hands that were now free of brown spots and wrinkles, but past that, past anything that was in front of him. This hundred yard stare happens a lot with those new to this side of the Bridge. It is Realization. “Dan, what’s wrong?” Bear asked with a nuzzle to his Man’s elbow.
Dan, the Dan restored to his prime sat silent a moment longer, tucking his bottom lip under his top teeth. Bear nudged again, “Dan?”
“My mind is clear. More clear than I can remember.”
“We call that Full and Perfect Knowledge.” Brandi educated, “It comes to each one of us on this side of the Bridge.”
“I was confused,” he confessed. “For the longest time, I was confused. For a while part of me understood, and then…I just didn’t.” His bottom lip returned to its place of safe keeping between his top and bottom teeth.
They waited in silence. Mostly in silence. The tails of the three labs— the unofficial metronome of the Bridge— swished side to side in unison. Those tails never stopped, were never still. The constant purr of the felines crowded amongst canines was a soft serenade to Dan’s moment of Realization. “I think—“he stopped. The space between those who welcomed him diminished as they drew closer to the Bridge’s newest resident. They understood what was next. Full and Perfect Knowledge wasn’t without its tears or regrets. It also wasn’t without its joy and expanded understanding.
“I think—,” he began again and stopped again. “I’m afraid I may have hurt those I love the most, my bride, my kids. I didn’t mean to, I didn’t understand and I wouldn’t on purpose… Not knowingly. I was just—“He gulped, stopping his ramble. His bottom lip disappeared again, but this time was different. Closing his eyes, the tears seeped down his face as if the pressure to hold them in would result in a cataclysmic rupture, “I was just so confused!” He was regretful, sorry and angry. Would they know he loves them? Would they understand that he had wandered in a fog for a long time? The answer was yes to both.
Howard pushed to the front, bumping Dan’s knee with his head. That head bump was a great tool for getting attention and served him well on both sides of the Bridge. Works every time. Dan opened his eyes and stared down at the gray and white sled dog. “Confused? You think you were confused—I use to stand in a corner until My Lady would set me straight.”
“It’s true. He would find himself in a corner three, maybe four times a day,” Fargo, who crossed the Bridge a year before Howard, informed the crowd.
You knew that? Howard asked with a head tilt.
“Of course, who do you think let our Lady know to check on you? She’d follow me anywhere.” Fargo, an alpha, a leader, his brother’s keeper in life remained as much in spirit.
“You helped him from this side of the Bridge?” Dan asked Fargo. The answer to this question was also yes.
“Dan, there are many perks to being on this side of the Bridge.” Bear explained. “There are the bagels, of course, and—“
“And, my tail has never looked fiercer!” Mollypop called from the crowd, her poofy tail standing tall and elegant.
“And, our bodies are restored,” cried the grateful voice of another.
Rowdy, the tall, blond sled dog cocked his head and confided, “Hey, Dan, I hope you didn’t mistake any puppies for chew toys on the Other Side. If so, you’re in for a surprise. Those tiny pups are a lot bigger on this side of the Bridge.”
“All this is true,” Bear confirmed, smiling at Rowdy’s addition to the lesson, “but the best part, and maybe the most important part of being on this side of the Bridge is our connection to the Other Side. We never leave them.”
They spoke of Love—the real lesson of Dan’s education about the Bridge. Love on both sides of the Bridge, it was explained comes in many forms. Several shared stories of how they showed Love in his or her own way. Boris was his mom’s first love—and she was his—and because of this love Sasha is cared for by those on this side to give her mom some rest. Rory, too weak for more than a tail wag thanked the one who rescued her in her passing. Ishmael was ushered to his Forever Home and then held his mother when it was his time to say good-bye. Clara, the finder of lost things, shared the times she’s visited Dan’s daughter. From low in the crowd, a corgi talked of care giving on both sides of the Bridge. Blou gave the gift of Tyb to his dad. Dan listened intently to each of the stories—the tales were varied and extraordinary. While he stroked Bess’ head, Dan’s lesson continued.
Mollypop chimed in with her own story, “Just like Fargo helped Howard from this side when he was need, we can visit our Loves on the Other Side. Some times when they need us, and sometimes because we need them. My cousin Sam is convinced that every shadow she sees above her is a hawk, but it’s just me checking on her and my mom.” Cats purred and tails wagged in agreement as each thought of those they left behind as Mollypop told her story.
Love, it was explained, can determine the thickness of the Veil between both sides of the Bridge. The Veil can be thinned to the needs of those on the Other Side. Bear rested his jowls on Dan’s knee. “Zoe’s heart hears almost as good as our ears.”
“That was you she heard call her name?” The question didn’t need to be answered. Dan smiled. He now had a Full and Perfect Knowledge of Love from this side of the Bridge. He understood, and with this Realization, his grins came with ease. He laughed until the tears flowed—not tears of regret and anger as he cried before—at the reluctant confession that bears were mistakenly blamed for exciting the Pack when all those who now surrounded him went for the occasional visit. “That was you?” he snorted through laughter and tears.
The light of the Bridge expanded in brightness for a moment, made even brighter by the joyful tears in his eyes.
“Whoa! We got another two-legged!”
“Well I’ll be pug’s baseball toy. What a wonderful honor, welcoming two of our two-leggeds in one day.”
“You must be C. Hobbit’s father. Jerry, isn’t it? I’m Dan,” he extended his hand in greeting, surprised at the immediacy of his Full and Perfect Knowledge. Both men, restored to younger, fuller, version of themselves shook hands. “No more age spots,” Dan said with a grin as he noticed Jerry’s examining look at his own hands.
The newest comer took inventory of his surroundings and whispered, “I thought there would be—“
“More humans? I think we got VIP passes.” Surrounded by the four-leggeds, Dan put his arm around the only other two-legged and guided him to the couch, “Let me show you around. There is a lot to learn.”
Dan began his instruction with a question, “Did you know bagels could grow on trees?”
Jerry opened his mouth to respond—bagels did not grow on trees—but, then a fog started to clear in his mind. Bagels growing on trees somehow made sense, and by the look crossing his face, many other things were beginning to make sense. It was the hundred yard stare. This hundred yard stare happens a lot with those new to this side of the Bridge.
“Hey, when the two of you get settled in, I’d be happy to share my thoughts on time travel as long as it doesn’t interrupt my meals on the Other Side. Fascinating stuff,” BearSpiritDog mused with a faraway look.
“The meals or time travel?” Jerry quizzed.
“Both.”

Such sadness and yet such great love and caring coming together all in one place.
Heartfelt condolences to Zoe, Melanie and their family and to CHH for their losses.
Amalia and Leonard and Rebecca — your words are like poetry but the sentiments underlying them are even more beautiful.
DIfficult times like this make you reflect not only on the loved ones that you have lost, but also on the loved ones that you have. This here blog has become an extended family of its own; like brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles and cousins all bought together through some miracle of fate to celebrate the joys and mourn the losses of our lives.
We still think back to that fateful day some three and a half years ago when we first logged onto Chethedog.com and started on what has turned out to be one of the best and most rewarding adventures of our lives.
With love to you all.
Wookie, mom and dad

Hello Friends,
My weekend has been completely absorbed by prior commitments. I had to organize our booth at the Oley Fair the past 4 days (it ends later tonight)’ as well as our “pack” of 25 2-leggeds and 12 4-leggeds in today’s Humane Society’s Walk for the Animals.
I was not able to catch up on the blog until now.
Melanie and Charris, please accept my sincere condolences. I wish you both peace and the joy of remembrance. I also send all my love to Zoe, who must feel such sadness and loss, at the same time she feels relief to know that the love of her life is now at peace and in the most capable Hands.
Amalia and Leonard, thank you for the song of passing. It is beautiful, and I am so sorry that I never had the chance to sing with you on Friday night. I am singing now.
Rebecca, your beautiful story brought me such happy tears, that I am having a great deal of trouble seeing as I post. I thank you so much for that.
I love you all. Rio, even if we are not close geographically, we are all so close spiritually, and that is truly the best Closeness there is.
4:03 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Thanks to Wookie, Siber, Howlers’Mom and all for expressing that thought – we have each other here and now, and we can express our love for each and every one of you.
well…maybe not the Wrotten Kats…
Ohhhh, ok, we love them too.
But we’re not gonna kiss ’em. yuck!

T&G Thank your folks from us for sharing their trip to Melanie’s house with all of us. It was comforting to read about, and I know it was deeply appreciated by the family.

Hello my dear friends,
It is only now that I have come to hear the sad news. Sob.
To Melanie, Zoe, and family, please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of the Raven. While he may no longer be with you in body, his spirit and love will encircle you always. I did not know him, but the love and reverence the other Plunderers held in him, made me realize what a wonderful man he was.
CHarris, please accept my deepest sympathy on the passing of your dad. While it is so very hard to accept the passing of a loved one, be comforted in knowing that your dad will always live on in your heart.
Amalia and Leonard, thank you for allowing me to share your lovely song in honor of the Raven. Rebecca, thank you for your glorious story. I felt the love in your heart through your words.
Thank you, Plunderers for accepting me into this family, that while far apart, hold each other closely, in their own loving way, through both the good and bad times.
Peace be with you all.

There have been so many beautiful words and feelings expressed today by all youse. Oh, the gratitude I feel for this here blog is overwhelming.
After driving straight through the night, AJ and the team arrived home safely early this morning. Everyone looks well and I was happy to see them as they were to see me. Word on the beat is Junior may have been put in the lead position a couple of times this summer. He’s young yet, but I think he did his best to make his namesake proud. It’s good to have everyone home again.
7:31 pm on September 22nd, 2012
On this sad day, Maila, Mom, Dad and I add our prayers and condolences to the Montague and CHH families.
Although we don’t post often, you have always made us feel very welcome here.

Glad to hear that AJ and the dogs got home safely. Hopefully they will not have any flooding problems.
8:14 pm on September 22nd, 2012
The kennel is very noisy today as everyone gets acquainted with their neighbors. Annabelle made the rounds this morning to welcome everyone home, stealing a bit of food with almost each visit.
The flood waters are receding. The forecast called for rains to begin last night and rain through today, but so far it has been dry.
8:21 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Rebecca!…That story is so wonderful!…sniff!…I swear I saw Cassie The Butt Sniffing Dawg in the crowd…heh!…Thank you for posting it on this here special blog…wheeze!

We are saying hello to everyone from Melanie and Zoe. They are finding comfort in everyone’s words, and in their memories.
Today, a flock of wild turkeys showed up and hung around in the yard. Melanie is pretty sure that her Dad sent them.
She may not be here tonight – exhaustion has set in. But she will be back soon, and says thank you to everyone.
And Bella – please give AJ big Corgi kisses from us – you know, the ones we wouldn’t give the Wrotten Kats
8:33 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Rio: I’m glad you liked the story. I believe Cassie was participating in some rough housing with my Younger and my Willie.
CHH has been added to the center of the quilt along with Melanie and Zoe.
I spoke to soon about the weather. It started raining again. I better break out the snorkel.
8:39 pm on September 22nd, 2012
T&G: No Wrotten Kats were kissed in the making of this welcome. Thanks for the update from Melanie. I pray that Melanie, Zoe and CHobbit will able to sleep well tonight.
Rio: I sat on Junior’s house to welcome him. He bumped me in welcome. Taking a page from Chet’s book, I bumped him back. He bumped me harder. I bumped him harder still. Then, the team howled one of several howls since returning him. All but one. Pancho honked just for you.
9:09 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Bella: How wonderful to have AJ, Jeremy and the team back! We can hear the welcome home howls from way over here.

Good night all. Hava an early 7:00 babysitting call while they do a 3 hour ride for the shop. Peace to Melanie’s family. Our thoughts are with you.
9:56 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Sneeze!….That little girl. ..sneeze!….She pulled me on the walk. I nipped at her a couple of times when she grabbed at me. She just kept pulling….cough!sneeze!…I thought I was going to die. …gurgle!
9:59 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Where am I? What the…? Rio, how did you get a hold of my earring?
10:00 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Walk!….Tonight on our walk the little girl who sometimes visits our neighbor goes with us on our walk….chorkel!…She gets to have Beau’s leash….heh!….Well, usually he lags behind, but tonight she pulled him in front and pretty much made his life miserable the whole way….heh!heh!…I was chorkeling the whole time behind him, taking it easy….wheeze!
10:04 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Rebecca!…That shiny thing that is in my bed with all my baseball toys right now?….sniff!…No, I do not have it.
10:09 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Rio: I hope that shiny thing in your bed with all your baseball toys that isn’t my earrings doesn’t poke you while you sleep.
10:12 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Poke!…Don’t worry Rebecca, it won’t because like I said, I don’t have it…snuffle!
10:17 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Tooth!…Rebecca, I think I lost another tooth when I nibbled on your earlobe….sniff!
10:24 pm on September 22nd, 2012
What’s that, Rio? I can’t hear you over the sound of wringing out my hair.
10:43 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Wringing!…As in wringing out the slobber??….heh!heh!…Good luck with that….snort!
SDD!..I finally checked my SDD and all youse who are expecting something, hopefully it is there now…chuffle!…Am I on top of things or what!?…heh!…Now where did that tooth go?
10:57 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Teeth!…Beau used to have a full set of perfectly white teeth…snort!…My friend thought it was wonderful! But he has been losing them and now his bottom teeth look almost like mine…heh!heh!…He lost another long bottom tooth the other day. I have no idea how that happened. I swear.
11:13 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Maybe Beau’s tooth went the way of my earring…
11:17 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Rebecca!….Where would that be?…sniff!
11:26 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Rio: Your guess is good as mine.
Tonight was the first training run of the season. Little Florence, one of the rescues from earlier this summer, ran in team for the first time. It went as first times usually do, but she got a belly rub and a love for trying. Next time will go as well as second tries tend to go.
11:28 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Tonight!…I am wondering how the Newf Pack is doing…sniffle!…I hope they are comforting Zoe and Melanie in the way only those big ole guys can – slobber…snorkel!…Rebecca, I don’t know if you realized it or not, but Bess and I were an “Item”….heh!…So I really loved hearing that she is doing so well on the other side these days….wuffle!…Bess and I had great times together. Those were the days…snorkel!
11:31 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Rio: I had no idea you and Bess had a history. Claims may or may not have been made about coordinating Beau’s finding his way to your friend.
11:35 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Bess!…You can’t mean Bess did any of the coordinating. She would never do that to me…grunt!…She knew I was a loner at heart…sniff!…She would not have guided buster Beau to my perfectly happy home to disrupt it entirely. I will never believe that…grunt!
11:40 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Oops, I may have said too much.
How about them Rockies? she asks to change the subject.
11:40 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Note!…On that note, we are leaving. We say “Phooey!” the D-Backs won and someone is tired and incredibly grumpy so we are going to go to bed now…sniff!…All my toys are waiting for me…heeee!
11:44 pm on September 22nd, 2012
Good night, Rio. I’m turning in, too. I stayed up too late and got up too early. Night all youse.
3:38 am on September 23rd, 2012
We have been totally out of touch and just now heard all the sad news. Please add our loving wishes for the families.
Mom may be under the quilt for awhile. Although physically she is getting better, she is unemployed again, under very fishy circumstances and has decided that she is not leaving the house again.
Hugs to all with hurting hearts tonight.
10:05 am on September 23rd, 2012
Oh, Macy, I am sorry to hear about your mom. Tuck the quilt tight around her, and treat her with all your love and extra special care.
XOXOXO

Rio! Do you and Beau get money from the Tooth Fairy when you lose a tooth? You guys look quite handsome in that photo.
