Iditarod (Cont’d)
Close-up of the Snowhook sled, taken at the Rainy Pass checkpoint, showing a lovely patch:
“First,” says Spence, “here’s something from Rebecca – “
“CEO of Snowhook Kennel – ” says Admin.
” – who’s so very nice to get in touch on so little sleep. For those who don’t know, Snowhook is ‘our’ team in the Iditarod race, a team consisting of Justin (AJ) and Rebecca Savidis and sixteen (with more back home) beautiful and well-cared for racing dogs. Here’s Rebecca’s report:”
The first full day of racing brought strong race times for the team and some quality time spent in fourth place. The team’s place in the standing has changed and that is expected. When it comes to the race, change is always expected. Up until tonight, AJ has followed his race schedule, coming into and leaving checkpoints within minutes as planned. He remained in Rohn longer than I anticipated. What was the reason? Your guess is as good as mine, yet the extended stay could be a result of weather, sled issues, trail conditions, or dog related. No matter the cause, I trust AJ’s judgement and competency.
“And,” says Admin, “here are two members of the racing team, perhaps running through some snowy Alaskan forest at this very moment. Abe on top, and then Charlie.”
“Many thanks to Rebecca for these photos.”
Welcome Happy, Old Annie from TN.

Good morning, All! Thanks for the nice writeup, Spence, Admin, and Rebecca.
Some call it “the vortex”. We call it “green flag disease”. We can’t stop watching.
8:24 am on March 5th, 2013
Good morning! I noticed that AJ has left a dog and is running with 15. Hopefully, Bella will get that phone call sonnet rather than later. Hmmm, for those who remember, if a dog is dropped at Rohn do they come in at Anchorage or Nome?
Smooth Runnings!
8:31 am on March 5th, 2013
Morning all from the HOH. Super report from Rebecca, Spence & Admin. Looks like Melanie sleeps as little as AJ! Great to see more TN pups (old Annie) showing up, The HOH likes the company.
8:42 am on March 5th, 2013
Good morning all. Melanie didn’t sleep much last night. You will need naps today!
We see that Rose and The Prof started their flight home last night. Sure flights incoming and outgoing Chicago O’Hare will be affected today. Snow started early this morning and is really coming down. No severe winds at this point and the snow is realy quite lovely. It is expected to continue all day.
Do we know which dog was dropped?
8:52 am on March 5th, 2013
Hi Charlie! (Wow…those eyes.) Go Abe and Charlie and Snowhook. I hope that AJ is enjoying the music.
Good morning all.
8:59 am on March 5th, 2013
Sorry to interrupt…
Rose is leaving in 10 minutes
for Chicago O’Hare on UAl 732.
9:03 am on March 5th, 2013
…and the Professor too, of course.
Good morning everyone!
9:12 am on March 5th, 2013
Know why the mommy dog is do dopey (sleep, not smarts). Jet lag!She keeps counting between AST and EST and to do that she gets us in one place then says 1 hour for each girl (baby newf isn’t here yet ’cause she won’t be ripe till weekend after next. Oh dog…how will she count then. Meanwhile, back to race stats.
9:15 am on March 5th, 2013
So they are coming into OHare. We will keep fingers and paws crossed for a timely arrival. Do you know what ETA might be?
9:29 am on March 5th, 2013
B&M: ETA now shows at 11:41 CST.
9:33 am on March 5th, 2013
Sooo, I see that whom ever calls Bella about the dog will be talking in sonnet form. sigh, darn autocorrect.
Anywoof, Good Morning again, I will be having my caffeine soon. From the GPS tracker it appears that Sonny Lindner, running just ahead of AJ, is the only one with a lower bib # than AJ. OFT has had a little more rest than Sonny’s team.
I have full GPS and information on both the computer and the iPaw. The guy checked in saying he didn’t have a Mac and he thought he had fixed it.
Thumbs up for service!
9:38 am on March 5th, 2013
I had a wonderful chuckle over that Melanie.
Thank you for the wonderful reporting Masquers. Have a good flight Rose and the Prof.
It looks like AJ is halfway between the Raven and Wookie’s checkpoints.
9:39 am on March 5th, 2013
We here have found that the analytic view is 100 times more addictive than the little flag. Since you can only compare two mushers at once, I keep having to delete one and bring up another. It is fascinating to see all the different rest stops and the differences in temp depending on when a team arrived at a certain point.
Must. Get. Dressed. At least before noon.
So are RoseandProf flying on a private jet now, heh-heh.
9:40 am on March 5th, 2013
A little late in taking off but they’re in the air 🙂
Now over on the GPS tracking…Team Snowhook looking good…right up there with the big girls and boys. Heh.
Melanie: kawfee kup in paw!
9:41 am on March 5th, 2013
Hoping for smooth travel for Rose and the Prof.
Check out Joe Runyan’s blog from early this morning, under the heading
Who’s Challenging?
Dallas Seavey, 2012 champ, and a big crowd of mushers like Pete Kaiser , Jake Berkowitz, and new mushers Savedis, are in the front phalynx ready to make a charge at the leaders. If anybody falters, they will be there to take advantage.
We’ll forgive him for misspelling AJ’s name, eh?
9:41 am on March 5th, 2013
Scott Janssen has scratched. That might have already been mentioned, but I don’t remember. He had a dog fall, 3 miles out of Rainy Pass, then two more went down. He put the first dog in the sled and the other two got up, but his wheel dogs stopped pulling.
Many of the mushers had dogs for colder weather. They are trying to take long breaks to ease up on the dogs. The trail is soft.

9:41 am on March 5th, 2013
Macy: Yeah, yeah…you caught that one. smirk.
9:42 am on March 5th, 2013
Current weather report is that snowfall will keep getting heavier (it already is), and that winds will be picking up by noon. Heaviest snow by noon into early afternoon, then tapering off.
9:43 am on March 5th, 2013
Buser!…He’s dropped down into the 30’s in standings…sniff!…His strategy seems to be working…heh!heh!
9:45 am on March 5th, 2013
BlueKat, Morning! Can you put up a link to that? I can’t find it.
MUST CLEAN KITCHEN
9:48 am on March 5th, 2013
Giant!…Wow! He is right behind Gebhardt, Zirkel and Mackey….Wooooooo! Weeeeee!…Now for some cawfee!
9:50 am on March 5th, 2013
Rio, Buser iand Failor are taking their mandatory 24. If those dogs come back good at the end of that, they will once again be in 1st and 2nd, because everyone else needs to still take their 24.
9:54 am on March 5th, 2013
Oh my. Burmeister is ahead of the trailbreaker!
9:55 am on March 5th, 2013
More..Cawfee..Here..Please.
If the Plunderers have anything to say about it Rose & the Prof will be bumped to First Class and AJ & the Team will be consistently running in the Top Ten.
And the Excitement Continues!!!
9:57 am on March 5th, 2013
24!…Oh dawg…snort!
10:03 am on March 5th, 2013
Melanie – oh my dog – it’s gonna be fun talking to you later. You know how you get when you are overtired. No filters. None. tee hee
We are so happy for AJ that this race is going well. Maybe last year he paid his dues for the next 10 years with all the heartaches, broken salad, lost on the ice moments. Maybe this year will go smooth as silk..,.um, make that smooth as ice.
Masquers – great song last night. Now it’s stuck in my head….
10:05 am on March 5th, 2013
Does anyone know if AJ and the team are out of the Burn?
10:13 am on March 5th, 2013
Stopped!…I just checked his speed and it is ZERO…snort!…They have stopped for some reason…sniff!
10:18 am on March 5th, 2013
Yes, AJ and the guy behind him stopped.
T&G, Don’t forget that AJ lost 2 important teammates just prior to the race last year.
10:19 am on March 5th, 2013
Great photos of two of my heroes….The Snowhook dogs.
It is special to have Rebecca doing a Snowhook report on the blog every morning.
Masquers, That was a very cute photo of you last night.
We also like the airplane photo.
I don’t have to be there to know Rio is giving Snowhook excellent publicity in the chat room. This is a good thing.
The Chet the Dog patch is becomming famous. WOO WOO
10:19 am on March 5th, 2013
At about 8:30 the temp started dropping fast. I think that is good. I hope it helps all the dogs.
Barb and Maggie, The storm coming your way stretches all the way from North Dakota to you. It is long and slow moving. Our latest snow started last night earlier than expected and we already had about 2 inches from the starter storm. They kept upping the total and we were supposed to get about 6-8 more through TODAY. But this morning we already have 9 inches on the ground and a whole ‘nother day of snow expected. At least it is fluffy. Usually March snow is really heavy and wet.
10:20 am on March 5th, 2013
I wonder if they have already stopped at the camping spot Whitey mentioned last night. Maybe the plan is to blow through Nikolai.
10:20 am on March 5th, 2013
That is a picture from the last snowfall. The sun was shining that day. No sun today, just cloudy snowy skies.
10:32 am on March 5th, 2013
Howlers – that was what we meant by heartache. We think. He and Rebecca endured enough to last a lifetime!
Gotta go to pt – no cell phones allowed. Carp.
10:33 am on March 5th, 2013
Staff: A Winter Wonderland!
Please check your SDD.
10:36 am on March 5th, 2013
Staff, Pretty picture of your folk’s home. Thanks for the news of the storm. They are saying 8″ here but I bet it will be more. They are saying it will continue all day, with lighter flurries tomorrow.
10:40 am on March 5th, 2013
Flying over Montana now…..
B&M: Their original flight from O’Hare to New York was cancelled yesterday due to the storm.
Hope the AshTray Motel isn’t in their near future. Gah
Paws crossed.
10:42 am on March 5th, 2013
Mom said she hasto meet a friend for lunch. Gah. This friend was on a cruise, so jus caught up on Downton Abbey this week. That is what she will have to talk about, when all she wants to do during her lunch hour is catch up on the race videos.
10:47 am on March 5th, 2013
T and G, ooo no filters! That is my default mode.
I don’t remember AJ having a broken salad last year. Seems like it would be easier to eat that way.
I guess when we run completely out of dishes I will get my tushy up and unload the dishwasher. It is just not as fun as reading EVERY SINGLE TIDBIT of Iditarod news I can find!
Masquers, kats always look like they are smirking. How can I tell the difference?
10:49 am on March 5th, 2013
I think AJ and the dogs are in the Farewell Burn now.
10:54 am on March 5th, 2013
Kitchen cleaned.
Cup of Coco finished.
That temperature has dropped. That will be a change for the dogs.
The low temperature will continue through Nikolai to Iditarod, then the severe weather alert starts for Shageluk to Nome. but the Warning ends at 6 pm AKST on Wednesday.
Of course, Nome is supposed to get only 2-4 inches of snow. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of wind with this storm either.
The weather channel is saying rain/snow
Accuweather is saying all snow.
Smooth runnings for Snowhook!
10:56 am on March 5th, 2013
The Trail Breaker is not moving.
Hope the TB machine hasn’t broken.
Lovely snow Staff. Our snow is still everywhere and there is poop in the back.
Poop Patrol!
10:56 am on March 5th, 2013
Thanks Spence and the CEO of Snowhook for those pictures.
Go Abe! Go Charlie! Go Snowhook!
Wose: In the air. Hope the flights go smoothly.
Melanie: Sleep deprived and caffeine on top – this oughta be fun.
Staff: Very Pretty.
Okay, now for the Insider and coffee!
10:57 am on March 5th, 2013
Burn!…That burn is killer on sleds…yeeep!
11:02 am on March 5th, 2013
Why is he Stopped…seems a strange place To Camp(?) Whitey-Lance???
Where’s that couch cushion when I need it!
BTW: My GPS updates are working great today.
Go Snowhook!!!
11:06 am on March 5th, 2013
Rebecca said to look for a rest between Rohn and Nikolai. This must be it.
11:08 am on March 5th, 2013
If the team is resting I guess I can leave the screen for a minute. Y’all don’t let anything happen while I’m gone.
11:09 am on March 5th, 2013
“They” say the burn is in better condition than it used to be. The BLM cleaned it up.
I don’t know why AJ has stopped for so long.
11:10 am on March 5th, 2013
Macy’s Mom, I am glad you remembered what Rebecca told us about the rest.
11:15 am on March 5th, 2013
Thank you, Macy!

Now I can relax…..
11:18 am on March 5th, 2013
Melanie – hope this works.

11:20 am on March 5th, 2013
AJ wouldn’t camp in the Burn would he? He and another are stopped. Please Dog don’t let there be sled trouble.
11:20 am on March 5th, 2013
AJ is on the move again!!
11:27 am on March 5th, 2013
On the trail again…yes he is…and at 10 mpr!
Our flight continues…over South Dakota now.
11:31 am on March 5th, 2013
One of the Twins broke her sled on a stump. There is info. in a video. Reminded me of AJ. She, however, has another sled up the road. Lucky girl.
The turtleman is here. He is doing the breakfast dishes, he also did a little shoveling and caulked in the bathroom. What a goooood
dogturtle.11:34 am on March 5th, 2013
I will go outside and wave to Rose and The Prof. Let me know when!
11:39 am on March 5th, 2013
Moving!…Oh my dawg! Can he catch up to the leaders again?….wheeze!…Damn that Burn!
11:44 am on March 5th, 2013
Staff: Get ready…about to fly over the SW cornor of MN…a long wave. Heh.
55 minutes to touchdown.
11:59 am on March 5th, 2013
Knowing that AJ planned to camp the team, I forced my Lady to go to sleep for a bit. She looked so comfortable, that I decided to do the same.
It is a long run between Rohn and Nikolai so AJ opted to break it up into two runs.
11:59 am on March 5th, 2013
Nap time over, everybody up, man your keyboards!!!
12:02 pm on March 5th, 2013
Yikes, the Mackeys are right on AJ’s tail. Back off!!
12:07 pm on March 5th, 2013
Wooosh, and away Mackey goes.
12:09 pm on March 5th, 2013
In that article they said the guy in the lead has a son named Rohn, then there is a stop at Rohn. Could that be, or is his son named John? He was going to race and scratched a few days before the start.
12:11 pm on March 5th, 2013
I have question. Does everyone lean forward over their PCs / IPaws and feel nervous when doing Iditarod updates or is it just me?
12:12 pm on March 5th, 2013
Barb, Buser did name two of his sons after checkpoints on the Iditarod.
We will return in a couple of hours or so.
12:17 pm on March 5th, 2013
Howler’s Pop, Yes, that is one of the times we get nervous. during the Iditarod. The flash that occurs (like a camera flash) when the tracker updates is a trip. (to use an old experession from the 60’s)
12:27 pm on March 5th, 2013
Those standings are making me nuts. Mackey is way ahead on the trail, but the standings show him behind AJ. grrrr Oh, wait, I don’t growl. Ok, now I start. grrrrr
12:30 pm on March 5th, 2013
O’Howlers,
We straightened up when we read your post. Obviously we do hunch forward. heh
12:36 pm on March 5th, 2013
Macy’s Mom: Heh. We’re all doing it. I’m a kat and you can hear me growling too.
And talk about being hunched over the keyboard, what with the GPS and FTD, we here are practically on top of it.
Our flight is coming in for a landing now…must be a bumpy ride.
Rose In A Storm takes on a whole new meaning…5 minutes to touchdown.
12:36 pm on March 5th, 2013
Tracker!…The last time the tracker updated AJ’s flag did not move, but the info box says he is moving…yeep!…I need to go lie down…sniff!
12:37 pm on March 5th, 2013
Macy! Are you making fun of our Mama with her bum flipper and her one handed typing???
12:42 pm on March 5th, 2013
I feel all kinds of sad today. My Two-legged took my Wose to the airport last night.
12:47 pm on March 5th, 2013
I just read the description of the trail between Rohn and Nikolai. Yikes! How does anyone get through alive! Team Snowhook is through the very worst of the trail.
I will be very happy when AJ and the team gets to Nikolai.
AJ says, “Nikolai is a friendly and warm checkpoint.” Like Wookie. Wookie’s checkpoint from the blog. (sniff) There is a warm gymnasium to sleep in and a big pot of spaghetti to eat.
12:47 pm on March 5th, 2013
Whew, back from Poop Patrol. Lots of poop today. There is some melting and surprises are showing up!
On the trail again, he’s back on the trail again . .
12:48 pm on March 5th, 2013
Bellie: You can bet your patooty she’s even sadder than you.
WoooHooo! Rose is on the ground and taxiing to the gate!
12:50 pm on March 5th, 2013
…the plane that is…
12:55 pm on March 5th, 2013
Now begins the long, long wait (6 hrs.) between planes.
(why, oh why couldn’t this have happened here?. We could be having a leisurely lunch right now and catching up on all things Snowhook)
Last flight out will be UAL 3477 at 6:08 pm.
12:55 pm on March 5th, 2013
Masquers: My Two-legged gave me snuggles and I gave her snuggles back to help us both feel better. Then, I sneezed in her face. I couldn’t help myself.
12:56 pm on March 5th, 2013
Thanks, BlueKat. Do you think they’ll ever get AJ’s name spelled correctly?
I am going on the heating pad. Luckily, I have my trusty iPaw in hand.
1:07 pm on March 5th, 2013
Thanks for the plane update. We just heard on the noon news that 1100 flights have been cancelled already at Ohare. Storm is “living up to the hype”. Snow is picking up as well as winds. 1″ to 1 1/2″ per hour accumulation. More flights will be affected as the day goes on.
1:15 pm on March 5th, 2013
I wonder where they’re going to land if they can’t land in O’Hare. Where do they go what’s the next hub up?
1:23 pm on March 5th, 2013
Breaking news from O’Hare: The flight to NY has been cancelled. sob.
1:24 pm on March 5th, 2013
Belle Star is making me laugh.
Sorry Rio but your need to lie down is making me laugh also.
Wolfie, Dawson (c/o Staff), and Rio’s friend should be receiving photos in the mail later this week. (Sorry they’re so late.)
1:26 pm on March 5th, 2013
If planes can’t land at O’Hare, they sometimes come to Detroit Metro. It’s sunny, 33, and no wind here.
1:27 pm on March 5th, 2013
T an G, me? make fun of your mama? Heh-heh, cough, cough, I would “never” do that. Bum glippers make for fun reading!
1:30 pm on March 5th, 2013
I spent a little extra time at O’Hare once upon a time. I worked for American Airlines and I took my mom to DC. On the way back there was only one seat, so I sent mom home, not knowing how I was going to get home. Wound up in Chicago, alone, in the middle of the night. Such fun!
1:32 pm on March 5th, 2013
The Important Thing to Remember here is the Safety of the Passengers, Especially our Wose and the Prof. With any luck they will find a Nicer Notel in which to spend the night.
1:37 pm on March 5th, 2013
A nicer “hotel” would be purfurable. cough.
1:42 pm on March 5th, 2013
Here I was, reporting on my morning activities—nothing special if you ask me—and boom! I make B. Stover laugh. Today is shaping up to be good after all.

Belle Star is making me laugh again. Go Snowhook!
1:47 pm on March 5th, 2013
AJ is only a couple of miles behind the leaders on the trail!
Go Snowhook!!!
1:47 pm on March 5th, 2013
Does anyone know what that big turn is that AJ is about to take? I can’t get some sort of satellite viewing on the iPad thank you.
1:48 pm on March 5th, 2013
Wose: Carpola! Tell them you don’t want the ashtray hotel.
Snowhook will make it to Nikolai and then sleep in the heat of the day. That’s my plan. Spend a little Wookie time. WhooHooo Wookie!
Snowhook Bella: What a team!
It is the 1st Tuesday of the month – 10% off at the grocery store.
1:48 pm on March 5th, 2013
This one is way better, Jonny Cash, Waylon and Kris Kristofferson with Willie. The Highwaymen. Makes me want to look for that album.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTgVi2hyA5Y
1:58 pm on March 5th, 2013
There’s a flight out on SkyWest in about a hour. If only they could make that one. You can bet it’s cram packed though.
1:59 pm on March 5th, 2013
Barb, Buser’s other son’s name is Nikolai.
Staff’s videos remind me of a Buser story from a long time ago. He said that he sang to his dogs on the trail. The reporter asked him what the dogs’ favorite song was and he said City of New Orleans.
2:02 pm on March 5th, 2013
Whitey: Since our team recently opted to take a break will they then buzz through Nikolai without stopping? What a temptation to stay though, with the very welcome accommodations and yummy food.
2:04 pm on March 5th, 2013
We here love Willie and Waylon and Kristoferson. And Cash is o.k. Too.
8 miles to WOOOOOKIE time!
2:05 pm on March 5th, 2013
Speaking of music, we wonder if The Giant is enjoying his playlist.
2:08 pm on March 5th, 2013
Long ago my Lady said this song reminded her of AJ through and through. Later, shortly after a certain wanderabout, my Lady said it also reminded her of me. She has a hard time listenign to it especially around race time. AJ and I share the same song. I knew I liked him.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=me8-yLPfTrc
2:13 pm on March 5th, 2013
If they DO plan to pass on by the Nikolai checkpoint you can bet Agent 00Wookie is coxing the other mushers into a deep sleep so AJ can get A Strong Lead.
2:16 pm on March 5th, 2013
Yessss!!! We love that song!
I betcha that song is where Brent Sass got the idea to name his kennel “Wild and Free”.
2:19 pm on March 5th, 2013
Coxing?
We here have some questions for Commentator Coach Whitey-Lance. How difficult is it to pass another dog team on the trail? We Oley Huskies would sooner stop for some wrasslemania than run on by a team of fun-looking like-minded huskies.
And assuming you can safely pass, how intimidating is it for our team to pass one of the “Big Guys”? We are wondering if he would think it seems foolhardy to go fast enough to pass one of them. We hope not, but got to wondering about that.
2:26 pm on March 5th, 2013
W-L, we love that song, and now that will be AJ’s song in our minds too.
2:40 pm on March 5th, 2013
Both are Great Songs!
Willie has made On the Road Again for us and now that we have been introduced to Hobo Jim, we know why youse love him too.
O’Howlers: Our apologies, but that spelling was so bad even the iPaw didn’t know what to make of it. snicker.
Dee Dee is back on the Trail.
2:53 pm on March 5th, 2013
I show DeeDee stopped in Nikolai with the rest.
one more mile for AJ.
2:55 pm on March 5th, 2013
I,m thinking that AJ will stop and rest because it is getting to be the heat of the day and the weather is too warm for running dogs.
2:57 pm on March 5th, 2013
Howlers: AJ trains the team to pass without jumping into the other team whether passing from behind or a head-on pass. Sometimes he will say, “On by,” which means there will be no stopping for a canine meet and greet. He will use the same command for other distractions the team might encounter. If a faster team comes up on another team, the slower team has to let the other team pass. The passing team will call, “Trail!”
Whether he is passing a big name or someone like us, he will stay true to what the team is capable of doing. If Quigley gets passing fever and the team is up for it, AJ will pass.
My mama says she has never seen AJ intimidated in their history together. That either means it has never happened or he has one hell of a poker face. Me? I’ve been initimidated before and I’m not afraid to admit it.
2:58 pm on March 5th, 2013
Nikolai!…If they get to this checkpoint they should stop and have some spaghettie…sniff!…McGrath looks like it is a really long way away…wheeze!
3:00 pm on March 5th, 2013
Thank you Whitey-Lance. Great to know.
Are we the only ones who just heard Wookie?
3:00 pm on March 5th, 2013
AJ is right on schedule. He will rest the team for several hours before heading back out on the trail. What does this mean for all youse? Restoring your posture from the Race Watching Hunch—scientist are working on a cream for this ailment, but it is still in the development phasae—eating, napping, working and doing tasks that have been ignored as of late.
3:00 pm on March 5th, 2013
Why do youse suppose the Trail Breaker is Stopped?
Maybe it Lost its GPS. Snicker.
We Are At Nikolai. Wooo Wookie!

Thanks for the Update, Whitey.

3:09 pm on March 5th, 2013
Not on this here blog he can’t.

But, Rio. How could one even THINK about bypassing those Wonderful Aromas! Plus the Comfort of a Warm Place to lay one’s head.
I know I couldn’t!

WhoooHooo!
Good work Snowhook.

The team is now into Nikolai, where Wookie will meet and greet each and every one of them, and when the time comes, to guide them safely onto McGrath where Zelda, Rory and Bridger will take over. Then off to Elim for my boy for more duty later in the week.
3:20 pm on March 5th, 2013
He was born on a mountain top on Utah State
Spent his life outdoors learning how to be great.
Searched a long time there looking for a mate
When he found her, they left for A K State.

I left RWC for a quick blur to Nikolai. Indeed the team was greeted by the most interesting dog in the world. He went from teammate to teammate with a head bump and a tail wag. A true class act if ever I saw one, that Wookie.
My Lady put the Plunderer playlist onto a disc so AJ could put the songs on his ipaw. She also made a playlist she titled: The race, the dogs and a little bit of us. She put songs on it that remind her of AJ, some of the dogs, their approach to racing, songs she hoped would put a giddy-up in his step, etc. She said I could share a list of the songs if anyone is interested:
The Iditarod Trail Song – Hobo Jim
Wild and Free – Hobo Jim (AJ and Whitey-Lance)
So Far Away – Dire Straits
All the Roadrunning – Emmylou Harris
King of the Road – Roger Miller (Fargo)
500 Miles – The Proclaimers (Played from a roof top at our first finish in Nome)
Working on a Dream – Bruce Springsteen
Theme from The Dukes of Hazzard (Good Ol’ Boys) – Waylon Jennings (The Outlaws)
Jesse James – Bruce Springsteen (Jesse, Frank and the late Younger)
Belle Starr – Emmylou Harris (AJ)
Accused of Love – Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Shelter from the Storm – Geanine London (Rory, Orion and our other rescues; being found the Plunderers)
Home on the River – King Mackeral
Sixteen Pretty Sled Dogs – Kyf Brewer
Husky’s Code – Kyf Brewer
Mama Tried – Merle Haggard (Doc)
What’ll I Do – Nat King Cole (Howard, AJ)
Gone Wandering – artist unknown (Whitey-Lance)
Six Days on the Road – Dave Dudley
The Race is On – The Grateful Dead
New Speedway Boogie -The Grateful Dead (Garcia)
Monkey and the Engineer – The Grateful Dead (Rowdy)
If I Were a Carpenter – Johnny Cash and June Carter
If You’re Going Through Hell (Before the Devil Knows You’re There) – Rodney Atkins (Norton Sound, jumble ice)
Rodeo – Garth Brooks
I will Wait –Mumford and Sons
3:48 pm on March 5th, 2013
Muzak!…Oh no, now Alice and Staff will be busy finding videos of all these songs…grunt!
3:53 pm on March 5th, 2013
Hi Coach, I have a question. Since AJ has been on his own freeze dried whatever works diet, how does he handle having real food?
3:56 pm on March 5th, 2013
Rio: Wose was kind enough to give me the copies of the photos of you and SiberH. She introduced the two of you to Junior at the Ceremonial Start.
4:00 pm on March 5th, 2013
Melanie: He isn’t on freeze-dried meals, rather they have been vaccumed sealed and frozen. Of course, he does have some special ice cream that is freeze dried on the trail with him this year. I can report when AJ gets to Nome, my Lady will go to the store and get him some ice cream which I believe counts as real food in our household. He will come back skinny—not that he has any weight to lose– and eat anything and everything that sounds good.
4:02 pm on March 5th, 2013
Rio and Junior! Can you tell which is which? The good looks run in the family.
4:04 pm on March 5th, 2013
Very difficult to tell which is which. Does Rio Jr Have baseball toys, too?
4:08 pm on March 5th, 2013
Mmmm… Spaghetti sounds so good here in thunder & lightningvillle, the HOH is having spaghetti pie along with kibble tonight. Yeah Showhook.
4:08 pm on March 5th, 2013
I can report that Junior became shy when it came time to meet his adopted uncle, SiberH. I think he couldn’t believe he was meeting a race expert.

4:12 pm on March 5th, 2013
Junior!…heh!snort!heh!…That foto makes my pug eyes water…sniffle!
4:14 pm on March 5th, 2013
Quote!…”…it usually takes about 10 years for a musher to get to the point where they’re ready to run the Iditarod.” …snort!…How true is this statement in regards to our Giant??…sniff!…Someone posted it on my topic in the forums…grunt!
4:25 pm on March 5th, 2013
Thank you for the photos, Whitey-Lance!
Mom says Junior looks like a real sweetie.
4:28 pm on March 5th, 2013

Wose: Great picture of you with Rio, Junior and the Giant. I hope you get home in time to see AJ coming into Zelda’s, and Rory and Bridger’s checkpoint. Or at least into a four paw hotel sans ashtrays.
Melanie: Thanks for link with weather map.
5:12 pm on March 5th, 2013
Just heard from Rose! Another overnight stay in Chicago. Her morning flight leaves at 11:04 am.
Ditto to what Dawson said about the hotel.
5:17 pm on March 5th, 2013
Rose update! They are checked into the Hyatt Regency O’Hare!
WooooHoooo!

Vacation!…Rose gets one more night of Vacation!….Wooooo!Hoooo!
5:34 pm on March 5th, 2013
Wooo! Hoooo! Indeed. That sounds like a fancy schmancy hotel, and not one of the ashtray chain of hotels.
We here just love the pictures of our Wose with Junior and the Giant and his pop and uncle.
Mom thinks an impromptu pizza night is in order to celebrate a great run so far, and then we will finally have time to catch up on today’s checkpoint videos.
Thanks for sharing your mom’s playlist with us, W-L. We are now wishing we would have gone with our cowboy song, but we are hoping our actual choice helps The Giant and the A-Team move along briskly.
5:47 pm on March 5th, 2013
Way to go Rose & Prof. Less aroma, more soft bedding! Rose, thanks for having BIG pictures. Herd Daddy here thinks our mom is crazy for showing us picts of things, but hey…we of the nation see better than 2 leggers anyway! Hope the spirit guides stay with Snowhook and AJ through the night.
5:49 pm on March 5th, 2013
Melanie: Love the weather map!
5:49 pm on March 5th, 2013
Greetings!
A bit of deja vu all over again. Prof and I got snowed in once again at O’Hare, but this time, we are not staying at the Ashtray Inn. We are staying at the way nicer Hyatt Regency-O’Hare.
It was sad for me and the Prof to leave Rebecca last night. sniff
We had a wonderful trip, made some wonderful new friends, and were lucky enough to meet the dogs of the Snowhook Kennel. We were also lucky to be allowed in the pupternity ward and snuggle with the new puppies. What could be better than a gentle kiss and sweet puppy breath again your skin. Prof was not ‘lergic to any of the dogs, and we were sad to leave them too. I will miss my VBFF, the sparkly Belle Starr, and mama Luna. Our hearts will always be with Rebecca, the Giant, and the dogs, and we miss them terribly already.
Rio! Proper introductions can not be made with little thumbnail photographs. I wanted Junior to get a good look at his handsome uncle Siber-H, and his baseball lovin’ namesake. Personally speaking, both AJ and Rebecca chuckled fondly at your picture with your fuzzy baseball toy. I love that picture!
It might be that a certain someone can be persuaded to go back for the 2014 Iditarod…….
GO SNOWHOOK!
5:54 pm on March 5th, 2013
Every time I think about the phrase “canine meet and greet” I have to giggle. I imagine each team trying their best to get a little quick sniff as they pass. No horsedevours and martinis for that bunch.
5:54 pm on March 5th, 2013
Rio Junior is a very sweet dog. I am proud to be his sponsor!
6:02 pm on March 5th, 2013
The sleeping area at Nikolai must be getting pretty crowded about now. 25 teams and counting. Put on another pot of sketti!

Hi Wose! I can tell you we here are all resting easier tonight, knowing you have a Comfortable Place to Stay.

Siber, Busser’s wife must be very understanding to name the boys after checkpoints!
We here are not surprised about the cancelation and stayover. Hyatt should be a nice place to bed down for the night. Tomorrow should be fine for traveling, according to news reports.
6:28 pm on March 5th, 2013
Martin B is on the move, but has taken some short breaks. His dogs are running in 40 degree weather. Rough . .
Glad AJ is still resting the dogs. The temp there and in “Zelda, Rory & Bridger” is 30 degrees and will be going down with the sun getting lower.
Jeeze Louise, this race is about the Temperature this year!
6:29 pm on March 5th, 2013
If you look at the Insider video of Aliy Zirkle leaving Nikolai you will see a huge pile of snow. Just for those of you who live in snow deprived areas to wonder about.
6:30 pm on March 5th, 2013
So is that Quig or Twig having their feet tended to? Nice picture Whitey-Lance. Thanks
6:33 pm on March 5th, 2013
Macy, you can say that again. Honestly, a breakfast pastry?
6:34 pm on March 5th, 2013
Oh, And Rio… I was listening to all the music on Rebecca’s list, one after the other. Should I post a few? heh heh heh. I found a great one about Jesse James. snicker.
The weather looks awful! So warm! Isn’t it funny listening to the mushers complaining about warmth when it is 30 degrees and many in this world look at it just the other way. Well not so ‘funny’ when you think about it.
6:35 pm on March 5th, 2013
I believe that is Jesse, as in James having a pawdicure. Fritz is next to him. AJ looks happy and my mama likes seeing his smile.
6:43 pm on March 5th, 2013
Howlers, the craziest thing is that the school is having counselors available for any child upset by the poptart. O M D!!
6:50 pm on March 5th, 2013
When you look at the directional headings of all the teams at Nikolai, it appears that dogs are going haywire. North, south, east, west! Of course, nobody is actually going anywhere, but still…
6:56 pm on March 5th, 2013
AJ does look happy in that photo. Is that from Rohn?
Barb and Maggie: The Busers live, breathe and love the Iditarod plus it is their work. Nikolai is a fairly common name and I like Rohn for a mans name. Rohn Buser is a young musher with the biggest dimples you ever saw in his cheeks. He was raised on mushing and would love to be in this race. I don’t know if Nikolai races.
6:59 pm on March 5th, 2013
MacyMinPin: I don’t know whether to laugh or to cry.

Here is a video of Aliy going down the gorge in 2012. Yikes it is scary!

OMD! Staff, that is super scary. We’re glad you shared this after A.J. Went thru there, and not before.
7:16 pm on March 5th, 2013
There was a news story the other day about the trend people naming their children for cities – Paris, Phoenix, Brooklyn, Dallas etc.
So be happy that your mothers didn’t name you all things like Bronx or Bismark or Lubbock. And heaven forbid, after visiting Pennsylvania, she could have named you Bird in Hand. Or Intercourse.
Anyway, Mama just caught Daddy making plans for prayer time:

7:25 pm on March 5th, 2013
There was a video of AJ coming down the Happy River Steps. He was sideways and not letting go of the sled.
Does anyone remember what year or video that was?
7:31 pm on March 5th, 2013
Hoh not only leans over computer but on Gorge video we all leaned like we were at Dismalland. No thanks. Hey Dawson, you could hace a biblical name like Shadrack or…

I’m tired and exhausted
and I want to go to bed
But the green flag won’t let me
’cause it’s not moving ahead.
Green Flag, please move . .
Green Flag, just one mile, please . .
Green Flag, with the number 34?
Move along and soar.
8:11 pm on March 5th, 2013
Melanie, The video of AJ at the Steps was last year. I’d love to see it again, but I don’t know how to find it.
8:17 pm on March 5th, 2013
The Snowhook dogs in that picture look like they are having a really great time….Happy Dogs.
8:20 pm on March 5th, 2013
Yummm thap pizza was delish.
We agree. Snowhook dogs are smiling and happy in that picture. Now please make them move. Who wants to volunteer to blur up there and tap The Giant on the shoulder?
8:20 pm on March 5th, 2013
I’ll betcha this is the last year we have to put up with mismatched photos and wrong spelling of names.
8:25 pm on March 5th, 2013
Staff, That is such a great video of Aliy and dogs in the gorge.
8:30 pm on March 5th, 2013
Macy: That is the Silliest Thing we’ve heard in a long time. Like Dawson says: you don’t know whether to laugh or to cry at the shear Stupidity of It.
AJ is in Good Company at Wookie’s Checkpoint: John Baker, Jeff King, Ramey Smyth.
8:36 pm on March 5th, 2013
Miss!…What did I miss!…snort!…For petes sake we’ve been busy every since she came home from the busy-place…grunt!…First she had to make supper and then we had to wait for her mother to get home from the tax-man to eat supper…sniff!…Then we all ate, then they did dishes…grunt!…Then, then she decided we all needed a walk even though it was getting dark out…grumble!…Now WHAT DID I MISS?…wheeze!
8:41 pm on March 5th, 2013
It is so frustrating having to work where Mom can’t keep up with the race. Today she didn’t even get to check the blog on her phone. We just caught up and are so very proud of AJ and the Snowhook dogs. Did anyone hear which dog got dropped and why?
8:42 pm on March 5th, 2013
We here are now glaring at that little green flag, willing it to MOVE!
T&G, Please ask your dad to mention the flag moving in his prayer tonight.

O’Howlers: You are making me laugh.

Bye Wookie. Hello Zelda, Rory, and Bridger.
9:01 pm on March 5th, 2013
Creator – we thank you for this beautiful day of blue skies and singing winds. We thank you for the snow that has fallen to feed the earth in some places and for the warmth that will start to bring new things to life in others. We thank you for the air all around us – air that is sweet in our lungs, air that lifts our spirits to the sky to fly with the birds.
Creator – you have given us a wonderful sense of freedom. As we walk in the wide open desert, alone with the cactus and lizards, we can be a part of your world, and be free. As we gaze upon the waves swishing on the shore, swirling around the shells of the little ones who live there, we can be a part of your world, and be free. As we hike through the woodlands, accompanied by the sounds of birds and crickets, we can be a part of your world and be free. Sitting on the top of a mountain, watching the hawks and eagles floating on the breeze, we can stretch our arms out to be a part of your world and be free.
Tonight, as AJ and the team race across the snow, sheltered by a dome of glowing stars, wrapped in the stillness of the night, let them feel freedom and the joy of being a part of the universe. Let their lungs be filled with the cold, crisp, clean air, and let it be medicine to them to make them strong. Let their eyes be filled with the beauty of the landscape around them of soaring mountains, and crystalline paths and let the beauty be medicine to them that they will want to see what awaits them further on the trail.
Creator – let their hearts be filled with the freedom they make for themselves in the running. Let freedom be the medicine that lifts all weight from their harnesses and backs. Let freedom lend lightness to the running feet, making it easy for them to continue on their journey. Let freedom make music in all their souls, rhythms that will be medicine of joy through the long night of running.
On this night we ask you to also lift those of our family who need to feel that sense of freedom. Let their heavy hearts soar lightly, let their tired spirits find peace, let their weary souls feel a healing and freedom from the troubles that cause them pain. Let worries and cares be set free to drift away on the winds and be banished in the light of a new day.
Creator – we thank you for this beautiful night of sparking stars and glowing moon. We thank you for the snow that is falling to feed the earth in some places and for the warmth that is bringing new things to life in others. We thank you for the air all around us – air that is sweet in our lungs, air that lifts our spirits to the sky to fly with the birds. We thank you for all the freedom that is in our lives.

SiberH!…I bet Leonard is doing the typing…heh!heh!
9:37 pm on March 5th, 2013
I have it on good authority that Leonard the dog does not type. I’m pretty sure, Leonard the Storyteller leaves all things typing to Stinky Mama, but I could be wrong.
9:37 pm on March 5th, 2013
Amen
9:38 pm on March 5th, 2013
Any idea which one of our team was dropped? We saw that Karen Ramstead let Team Tsuga know which 2 of theirs were dropped. She visited them in the dropped dog lot.
9:40 pm on March 5th, 2013
Cough, cough, snort, splort…
Um, I believe that neither Leonard types. I’m not sure about Leonard the dog. I am sure about the two legged one.

Leonard!…Well, he was sitting at the PC looking like he knew what he was doing…heh!heh!

10:42 pm on March 5th, 2013
Amen. Thanks to Leonard and Amalia
Rio: Thanks for the link to the excellent web cam in McGrath.
11:11 pm on March 5th, 2013
Rio – the Storyteller was actually staring at a picture that we have of a snowscene with the Northern Lights over it. It was painted by a locally famous artist many years ago, and was one of the things that the older generation scrimped and saved to buy. It was handed down to Mama and Daddy and now lives in our living room. Mama came into the room and saw Daddy staring at it. She snapped the pic, and asked what he was doing. He was “traveling” and checking on AJ and the team.
11:26 pm on March 5th, 2013
Aliy is in at McGrath. You can see the crowd and the light.
11:27 pm on March 5th, 2013

Lance is next. I wonder if we will see the camera team he is leading?
11:35 pm on March 5th, 2013
Yup, at least 3 lights for Lance. It looks like Aliy went on through.
11:37 pm on March 5th, 2013
Lance!…Staff, yup the 3 lights were probably part of his entourage…heh!…What a guy.
11:37 pm on March 5th, 2013
Now Mitch will come in. Lance went right on through also.
11:40 pm on March 5th, 2013

Mitch Seavey is there now.

I know what you mean T&G. It is addictive. However as soon as it gets dark I doubt it will be much use. I can refresh it more often than every 10 minutes though. Either that or I am in a time machine.

Sorry Rio. Us kats are too cool to do something only a dog recommends. I am sure that Basil and Sage told Golinka about the cool camera too.
heh heh
Anyway that is all the mushers for about an hour now so I will sneak off to bed. Night all. And Hi to Patsy if she gets up in the middle of the night.

I’ve got to get me one of those forehead lights for the farm. If the yard light is out and it is the dark of the moon you can not walk across the yard. Totally dark except the stars. Wonderful and amazing and you will break your ankle in a flash.
Now really nighty noodle.

Is anyone else addicted to the analytic view? It give so much info that I nearly blow a circuit trying to digest it all. I am up from my nap now and ready to catch up on things. Go dogs Go!

Like one thing I just learned is that it got to 47 degrees this afternoon where LM was running. The dogs must be sweltering!
1:05 am on March 6th, 2013
Hi Macy, I’m just going to hit the hay. 47 degrees!
I mostly use the analytic view to see how much sleep the dogs are getting. I still like the green flags the best.

Patsy here, just checking in on our intriped team. I’ll have to wake up Melanie in an hour or so to watch the green flg move into McGraph. She like the green flag, the Pack and I like the analytical view. But, what an you expect from a creature who needs caffeine on the morning. If she doesn’t have it she looks like one of those zombies.
The team is moving well and on the canine interwebs I can tell the are happy and having a good time.

I may be the last one to discover this, but when you click on AJ’s musher profile on the green flag page, you get all his stats on time between checkpoints. Way cool!
5:43 am on March 6th, 2013
AJ is into the checkpoint. Patsy let me sleep through his arrival so I’m not sure when he got in. Going back to sleep. Rest well, Snowhook.
6:15 am on March 6th, 2013
Macy, we just checked out what you found on the musher profile. Way cool! We wish we knew which dog got dropped and why!

Good morning! McGrath. Zelda, Rory, and Bridger there to meet the team. And also McGrath was Boris’ checkpoint last year so we here love McGrath. Mom had picked it last year because her very first friend in the whole world was Timmy McGrath. Good checkpoint.
But Tokotna is where they have the best food, right? Let’s get us to Takotna.
GO SNOWHOOK!
