Iditarod Banquet
“This would be a fun banquet to go to,” Spence says.
“The dogs should have a banquet, too,” says Admin. “Here’s what Rebecca has to say about it:”
With two teams still on the trail, yet nearing Nome by the mile, the Finishers Banquet was held on Sunday afternoon. Special awards were given for various reasons and then mushers were recognized for their place in the official standings. Each musher gave a speech when they received their finisher’s patch, and in some cases prize money. AJ’s speech was shorter than most and only a bit longer than a few.
Third place finisher Ramey Smyth thanked AJ for assisting him on the trail and helping him catch his team. Ramey mentioned that he nominated AJ for the Sportsmanship award for his efforts on the trail. Ramey could have spoken about himself, about his climb from 30th to 3rd place, about his accomplishments, yet he chose to thank AJ in front of peers, officials, volunteers and fans.
Our recovery from the race has begun, yet recovery is slow. Our sleep schedule has not returned to normal and we both seem to have larger than normal appetites. We will say good-bye to Nome midday on Monday and return home to Willow.

Welcome home Snowhook and thank you Ramey.
Good morning all.
8:46 am on March 19th, 2012
Good Morning All!
An expected temperature of 70 degrees today here in Westchester, and the first day of spring is not until tomorrow. I shudder to think what our summer will be like.
Glad to have the Snowhook team back at home. Ramey Smyth sounds like a stand-up guy to me. Thanks, Ramey for what you did and said about our friend AJ.
And what’s this about a bottle of wine with AJ’s face on it????
8:54 am on March 19th, 2012
Good morning Bee and Rose and all y’all! As usual, Mom is going to leave for work early so she can run errands this morning, so I won’t have a lot of time here. Sheesh! Just because she goes to work late on Mondays, she thinks she has to get lots of errands done. No no no! She needs to stay home and let me on the computer until the last possible minute!!!
8:55 am on March 19th, 2012
Good morning everybody! Hip hip hooray for Ramey Smyth! What a great guy he sound like ( sorry B).
We have become AJ and Rebecca Groupies, as we watched the whole Conway Seavey video to catch glimpses of them.
9:13 am on March 19th, 2012
Kirby:
I do believe you need your own I-Paw. 🙂
9:25 am on March 19th, 2012
Rose: I think you’re absolutely right! You know, Mom was talking about a guy at church yesterday who was showing everyone his brand new I-paw 29, or whatever number they’re up to now. (Mom calls it an I-pad, but she’s not quite as up on technology as I am!) I wonder if he’d donate his old one to a technologically deprived mutt? Maybe if I gave him the droopy ear, head cocked, eyes pleading look? I’m real good at that!!!
9:33 am on March 19th, 2012
Wow, most of the mushers are really unassuming, laid back and awesome dudes.
Is the rumor true? LM got the Sportsman Award?????
Anyhoo, lots happening on the homestead here. New banister going in on the west wing. That will let Dan have the freedom of the bathroom without having to ask us to help him around dog obstacles. We are getting a composter! Last years left over windfall apples will be going in it when we put it together. The peach tree is going to be trimmed today.
The Pack will have an awesome time as management!
Good morning from Sunny Warm New England. (those words just don’t go together!)
Safe travels to Snowhooks two and footed Pack members!
9:47 am on March 19th, 2012
Greetings from the snowy foothills of California.
This weather is crazy!
Yes, it is true that Lance won the Sportsman Award.
And the guy that won the 4 wheel drive is the same guy that won last year!
9:48 am on March 19th, 2012
Wonder if cheesecake is part of the Snowhook Recovery Diet, or if Rebecca has maxed out on that particular delicacy.
Thank you Ramey Smith – YOU, sir, are also a true Sportsman, as is our Gentle Giant.
Kirby – we feel your pain. Mama insists on doing grocery shopping and a whole bunch of other errands today instead of staying home with us, sunning out on the back deck. Foolish 2 leggeds! Don’t they know days like this are meant for basking?
9:49 am on March 19th, 2012
That Ramey Symth does sound like a good guy.
Safe travels to AJ and Rebecca as they head home.
Melanie, We had warm and sunny yesterday. Today warm and raining. Good day to be at work, I guess.
9:58 am on March 19th, 2012
Sportsman!…Too damn bad Ramey didn’t spread that story about AJ helping him around before the voting started…grunt!…I wonder what Lance Mackey did to deserve the award?….sniff!
10:10 am on March 19th, 2012
From the bleak areas covered by The iditarod, to the following picture.
Taken by Bret Webster (he has his own website. Totally cool. Want to travel and take pics like his. Just add “images” after his name with that dot com thingy.)
This picture is of Toroweap Point from the north rim of the Grand Canyon.
Our world awes and amazes me.
10:35 am on March 19th, 2012
There’s a mourning dove in my garden with a huge dried twig in his beak for nesting material. He can’t decide whether to keep the twig or to start eating the sunflower seeds. I hope it doesn’t start snowing after the nests are built.
10:35 am on March 19th, 2012
Melanie, I love that photo and it isn’t even of the frozen North.
Colder than normal here for this time of year. I’m not complaining.
AJ gets our sportsmanship award of the year.
Ramey Symth is suppose to be a really nice guy.
Dying to know why Lance Mackey got the Sportsman Award.
Congratulations to Guinness for winning the Golden Harness Award!
Macy!! Tell us about Mushing Radio when you get the chance.
10:38 am on March 19th, 2012
Melanie: Wow, too cool! Or maybe hot!
TTFN, y’all! Maybe I’ll be back tonight if Mom isn’t too tired to turn the computer on for me when she gets home from work!
10:39 am on March 19th, 2012
Beautiful photo Melanie.
Oh, and Wookie: I never accepted any excuse for a late paper. I graded it down one grade for each day late. Tough!!
10:49 am on March 19th, 2012
Beautiful, Melanie!
Maybe Lance got the award for his comments about Dallas! We think AJ shoud have gotten it, for sure.
We just heard that chocolate is 25 times better than statins (whatever those are) are preventing heart attacks. Good to know!
10:58 am on March 19th, 2012
Hi Everybody!
O.Howlers: You forgot to mention…AJ and Rebecca are nowhere to be found in that Conway Seavey video. Grrrr. You would have thunk that the cameraman could have panned back to include the crowd. We looked in vain for a brief glimpse of our favorite couple.
We are stunned, as are all of youse, that LM received the Sportmanship award. He wasn’t even near the top of our list before the race and after his comments during the race…well, let’s just say, he has plummeted to the bottom.
On the other hand, a big thank you to Ramey Smyth for acknowledging and voting for the one who won the Sportmanship award in our eyes. You are a good guy Ramey Smyth.
11:08 am on March 19th, 2012
Statins are drugs used to lower cholesterol levels.
11:11 am on March 19th, 2012
Ummm, let’s see, Bee. Chocolate or pills? Guess which one we choose!
11:25 am on March 19th, 2012
Barb: I agree. I’ll keep eating chocolate! (There’s really no choice involved.)
11:27 am on March 19th, 2012
Bear, our favorite couple are in that video. If we get time to watch it again, we’ll take note of the time.
The diet Mom and Pop are on recommends an “ender” after dinner. It can consist of chocolate…the really good kind. The higher cocao (sp?) the better.
11:33 am on March 19th, 2012
Oley and Bee, Yes, we forgot to mention that it supposed to be dark chocolate that is most beneficial.
Pouring rain, we may lose power any sec.
11:43 am on March 19th, 2012
They’re back! http://www.ustream.tv/decoraheagles
Maybe this will help us get over Iditawithdrawal.
11:56 am on March 19th, 2012
Thanks, Oley. We checked it out and they are expecting the first hatch 3-23 to 3-25. Is that earlier than last year? I think they had 3 eggs last year, same as this. And none of the babies commited infantcide, Thank Dog!
12:10 pm on March 19th, 2012
Melanie, that photograph reminds me of a poem written by John Berryman:
Master of beauty, craftsman of the snowflake
Inimitable contriver
Endower of Earth so gorgeous and different from the boring moon
Thank you for such as it is my gift.
I have made up a morning prayer to you
Containing with precision everything that most matters.
‘According to thy will’, the thing begins.
It took me off and on two days. It does not aim at eloquence.
12:12 pm on March 19th, 2012
Good morning from our last day in Nome. The weather has been sunny and warmer than last year although you still need to be bundled up.
Rose: I only eat cheesecake during AJs races with the exception on a slice once in a very blue moon.
LM received the award for taking a half an hour to speak with children in a village. I’m very proud of AJ and it meant something to me that Ramey chose to mention it in his speech especially when AJ didn’t win.
12:19 pm on March 19th, 2012
Kirby, if you gave me that look, your wish would be my command!
12:27 pm on March 19th, 2012
Lance!…Mackey!…Pisssh-Shaw!….grunt!
12:42 pm on March 19th, 2012
I think the award should be focused on mushers helping mushers…like AJ helped Ramey.
12:44 pm on March 19th, 2012
We wouldn’t know anything that went on at the banquet if it weren’t for Rebecca. Not much news about it on the Iditarod’s website.
Thanks Rebecca
1:27 pm on March 19th, 2012
O.Howlers: Drat! We must have looked away for a minute. Hard to miss the Giant and his Bella. We will wait for you to post the time then will watch the video again. Thanks.
Prof Stover: Not ANY exceptions to your Rule? Not even:
Stopping to help another musher,
Mushing with a sled out of alignment,
Finding his way through a fierce blizzard on the Sound,
Plundering on in spite of a lack of leaders until the very last miles (thank you to our recent retiree, Annabelle, for taking the lead into Nome)
Bear thinks you should make an exception to your rule…just this one time…for this one special case.
1:35 pm on March 19th, 2012
Siber- at the end of last night we posted a link to the musher radio blog.
Mom has been out sitting IN the yard all morning. What’s up with that? We have all been taking turns watching her. She made a nice clean area of dirt and then got all huffy when we tried to till it for her. Sheesh.
1:38 pm on March 19th, 2012
Since my students knew the deadline for all papers at the beginning of the semester, they had plenty of time to get a schedule worked out for each paper due. So, no exceptions.
However, AJ may have as long as he needs.
1:39 pm on March 19th, 2012
The Iditarod Trail Committee did a pretty good job of awards updates on their FB page. Really SiberH, you don’t have to give away your family secrets to have a page.
1:44 pm on March 19th, 2012
First to my family: I AM NOT AND HAVE NEVER BEEN A SUPERWOMAN!
Yes, that’s the kind of days the last few days have been.
Next: Hi Friends!
B.Stover: We haven’t really set a day for AJ’s report so it can’t be late yet.
KirbyT: If I had an iPaw and you looked at me that way it would be yours.
LM needs help.
Good morning everyone.
Bella. This means you have to wait until AUGUST 2012 to have another piece of cheesecake!
1:46 pm on March 19th, 2012
Oh, the banister is in (very safe).
The peach tree is pruned.
YSAS and I had a great discussion on the script that other actor gave him.
And then a bunch of carpola. Speaking of which I have to get back to that part.
2:02 pm on March 19th, 2012
Macy, Is your mom planting a vegetable garden? Is this a new endeavor? What is she planting?
2:26 pm on March 19th, 2012
I think the mushers voted for LM and they didn’t see the footage of him saying that he wanted anyone BUT Dallas to win.
2:34 pm on March 19th, 2012
And they probably didn’t see the footage of LM whining about his dogs and blaming them for not winning and calling his lead in-season dog a grouch.
Were there Snowhook girls in season? We don’t know, because our musher never whines.
3:01 pm on March 19th, 2012
Thanks Macy! I missed it when I looked at last night’s posts but I will check it out. We need to remember this blog next year.
About facebookie…I am thinking about it.
I don’t have to have my own page to follow the Quest on facebookie, I just cannot comment. Fine with me.
Everyone! Remember the Howlers suggestion that AJ and Rebecca sell his Iditarod story to raise money for Snowhook. That is an idea that would work.
Our musher didn’t whine. He said he enjoyed the trip and smiled.
3:03 pm on March 19th, 2012
I gotta tell you guys what happened to me. Molly’s Mom is here and she took me for a walk. A big hawk was flying over and spotted me. He flew down and was circling over our heads. Molly’s Mom grabbed me and we ran to the house and he stayed over our heads. He wanted to eat me. Wah!
3:07 pm on March 19th, 2012
Some of you know…about last night’s snow.
Wolfie: You too?
It wasn’t much, just a touch, at least here on the Island. But other areas got at least an inch.
I know, I know. Tomorrow is the first day of spring. The birds seem to think so too…they are greeting the day with voices raised in song.
We missed the Red Lantern team arriving in the early hours of the morning. Missed the Widow’s Lamp being extinguished.
The kaiser kam was on this morning, but there was not a soul in sight.
(Not) waiting patiently for the video to be posted.
3:12 pm on March 19th, 2012
Sammie! Eeek! That was a close one.
3:13 pm on March 19th, 2012
Sam, We are glad you are okay and Mollypop’s Mom is a good protector.
3:13 pm on March 19th, 2012
Molly’s Mom saved you Sam!
3:57 pm on March 19th, 2012
Sammie!…Stay under-cover! That hawk knows where you live now…grunt!… You will not be safe there. We may have to move you into a Witness Protection Plan….wheeze!
3:58 pm on March 19th, 2012
I’m back home in ski-less country. The full hawk story is that that there were two hawks flying overhead. Fortunately only one of then saw little white Sammie, looking like a bunny, but I’m sure the mate would have been there quickly. The hawk was circling us low enough that I could see each feather. I grabbed Sam and ran to the house. I have never seen a hawk in flight that close. It was beautiful, actually, but scary.
4:28 pm on March 19th, 2012
Poor Sammie,
I am glad that you are safe!
4:34 pm on March 19th, 2012
And the award for Most Understanding Professor goes to B.Stover
The award for Best SuperWomanism goes to Melanie
The award for Bravest Princess Saver goes to MollyPop’s Mom
The award for Best Health Tip (and Tastiest) goes to Barb
The award for Best Video Couple Spotting goes to the Howlers
The award for Best Garden Consultation and Tilling goes to Macy.

AJ the Giant AND Ramey Smyth!
4:41 pm on March 19th, 2012
Grump!…How come I didn’t get an award??…huffle!puffle!
4:46 pm on March 19th, 2012
Sammy, All I can say is that it is a good thing you were not running around the back yard. And Yea for your brave Auntie MPM.
T & G, thank you for the award. We are honored.
Have a house showing on Saturday. Paws crossed here!
4:46 pm on March 19th, 2012
And Rio gets the award for Best Tennis Ball Stealer!
4:48 pm on March 19th, 2012
Thanks academy, thank you very much. I want to thank Mom for giving me the chance if not the opportunity to till. And most of all I would like to thank my manicurist and promise to snap a little less next time.
4:48 pm on March 19th, 2012

4:50 pm on March 19th, 2012
Best Mission Commander
4:51 pm on March 19th, 2012
(there’s so many Rio – we didn’t want the oterhs getting jealous)
5:11 pm on March 19th, 2012
Thank you thank you. Altho we have not had a chance to re-watch the video to ark the time when the famous couple appears. And now Mom and Pop are going off to some boring consevancy dinner and taking our iPaws. Did anyone else have a chance to look?
5:16 pm on March 19th, 2012
Not to belabor the point and we may be considered heartless by some, BUT…in view of the recent actions of LM…we believe he had a hidden agenda when stopping for 30 minutes to speak with the children. Since he was already far behind the leaders, what did he have to lose? This is our opinion and we’re sticking with it.
T&G: We like your awards much better than the ones given out at the Musher’s Banquet.
Witness Protection for Sam. That’s funny, Rio.
5:21 pm on March 19th, 2012
MagPie, I can’t run around the yard. I have to be on a leash when I’m outside.
5:46 pm on March 19th, 2012
That thought crossed my mind also, Masquers…What did he LM have to lose.
5:57 pm on March 19th, 2012
As much as I appreciate the honor. I am offering it up to any one who wants to answer phone calls, explain things to workmen, explain things over and over and yadda, yadda, yadda …
snicker Glad today is over.
I hope that Snowhook lands softly and safely.
6:06 pm on March 19th, 2012
I’ve ordered a time turner for Melanie.
6:30 pm on March 19th, 2012
THANK YOU B. STOVER!!!
6:33 pm on March 19th, 2012
Dear BStover,
Time Turners are currently on backorder.
But you will never know that because when they come in we will use one to go back here and erase this message.
Signed,
The Marauding Goats
6:38 pm on March 19th, 2012
Dear Marauding Goats: I’ve already received notice of the delivery of the time turner but I won’t let you know when or where. I’ve also written it down on my calendar.
6:43 pm on March 19th, 2012
Sammie: Thank dog, MollyPop’s mom is as fierce as her beloved MollyPop. If she didn’t save you, who knows what would have happened. I’m picturing the scene in the Wizard of Oz, where the Flying Monkeys lift Dorothy away. I’m glad you and MPM are both safe.
6:48 pm on March 19th, 2012
Rose – I wasn’t fierce, but I was fast (or faster than usual). I scooped up Sam and headed for the house, never taking my eyes off the hawk.
6:56 pm on March 19th, 2012
Siber: Now that it’s all over, except the tying up of a few loose ends, what did you think of the “new and improved” Insider?
6:57 pm on March 19th, 2012
There was a sneak peek of FOD on Chet’s facebookie page.
Well, more of a tease than a peek (peak?) (pique?) (peke?) but I’ll take it!
7:08 pm on March 19th, 2012
Thank you again B.Stover.
TMG: Please let this package go through.
MollyPop’s Mom, I think it was in one of Dana Stabenow’s books where an eagle took a little poodle. I’m glad you saved Sam from that situation!
7:08 pm on March 19th, 2012
Masquers, The GPS tracker has been improved even though it always worked pretty good. I don’t think the rest of it is much of an improvement. They eliminated all the videos from past races. They did, however, get the standings up on the leaderboard quicker than they used to.
I imagine from now on we will be going to the Iditarod’s facebookie page to get the quickest news…just like the Quest does. I hope the Iditrod can do as do as good a job as the Quest does on facebookie.
The Alaska Dispatch online newspaper now has better coverage of the Race than the Anchorage paper.
7:16 pm on March 19th, 2012
Hi, Macy. I found Running North at the library (thanks for mentioning it), along with Yukon Alone by John Balzar and Honest Dogs by Brian Patrick O’Donoghue.
The more I learn, the more respect I have for A.J. and for Rebecca for supporting him since it’s sometimes downright SCARY and the doggies just keep going and going.
Siber-H – you’ve known about this all along, the SCARY parts?
7:24 pm on March 19th, 2012
Bluekat, remember that Siber H is a Siber. He thinks that this is fun!
Born to run and all that…….
You know.
7:31 pm on March 19th, 2012
Wolfie – sometimes they run off cliffs and run into trees and find ice boulders two stories high. I must be a ‘fraidy kat.
7:33 pm on March 19th, 2012
This is how we feel after the great yard caper.

7:46 pm on March 19th, 2012
That’s how mom feels!
It is called iditaletdown.
7:50 pm on March 19th, 2012
Bluekat…..they run off cliffs? Nobody mentioned that part.
I’m staying here by the fire with mom.
7:56 pm on March 19th, 2012
Cliffs!…Would the sled part go over the cliffs too?…wheeze!
8:21 pm on March 19th, 2012
Someone at Dan’s church heard him say that I was following The Iditarod and loaned him the book “Cold Hands Warm Heart” by Jeff King for me to read.
Haven’t started it yet. Waiting for the time turner.
YSAS just got background for tomorrow in something that doesn’t have a name yet. It’s a pilot.
BTW, I was looking up parts for a lawnmower for the guy doing the bannister. He’s redoing a mower for us since ours burned up last year. I found the job I want. It’s called an “Idler”. I could do that job. Unfortunately, it was a part for the lawnmower.
Glad today is over.
TTFN
8:28 pm on March 19th, 2012
Bluecat, Yes, I have known about the scary parts all along. Last year, the Yukon Quest got pretty tense at times. Hugh Neff, who won the Quest this year, says he will never do the South to North route on the Quest again. I can’t wait to find out if he changes his mind.
One year the Quest goes from Whitehorse to Fairbanks and then the next year they go from Fairbanks to Whitehorse.
8:33 pm on March 19th, 2012
The book by Jeff King has a funny part in it just like Winterdance. Mom really liked Yukon Alone and Honest Dogs.
Macy, We are laughing at that photo…good grief
8:39 pm on March 19th, 2012
Princess Sam: do you have to be so white? Can’t you skip a bath or two or wear a coat so you won’t stand out so much? The arctic hares up here will be changing from pure white to light brown in a few weeks. They camouflage themselves nicely against the environment (the in-between stage is sad).
Re: AJ’s & Rebecca’s Iditarod memories as possible fundraising items. If they are agreeable to either writing or recording something, perhaps we can sell it along with the photo cd (of my photos and any that Rebecca contributes). ????
8:49 pm on March 19th, 2012
CHarris, I like your suggestion. I want to go outside and now my family says NO. I bet I could talk Molly’s Mom into trying a walk in my pink snuggie.
8:56 pm on March 19th, 2012
Camouflage!….Sammie dress in gray like the sidewalk…heh!…That hawk will never see you down there…sniff! …Do you have any Army-like camouflage outfits?…chuffle!
9:02 pm on March 19th, 2012
Ideas!….This is great! C. Hobbit Harris is brimming with fund raising ideas!….Wooooo!… I love love love it! I think a story about AJ’s experience told by AJ and written by Rebecca
and edited by me, Riowould be a great big Best Seller on their blog!…snort!…The Ultimate Snowhook Photo CD would be sold separately, of course…heh!heh!9:04 pm on March 19th, 2012
CHarris, That is an excellent idea about selling the Iditarod memories along with the photo cd.
9:07 pm on March 19th, 2012
Sammy, Rio is right, camouflage is the only answer.
Long day at the salt mines. See you tomorrow.
9:12 pm on March 19th, 2012
I also would love a copy of the Evening Prayers. I would pay some $$$ for that.
9:16 pm on March 19th, 2012
I think that Sammie should dress up like something scary like a dragon or the gnome from Travelocity.
Those hawks would come to fear him!
9:17 pm on March 19th, 2012
Bunny-brown!….It was C.Hobbit Harris who thought of the amouflage idea first…heh!heh!…She has to do that herself because the large Alaskan Hawks mistake her for a little bunny sometimes…heh!
9:21 pm on March 19th, 2012
Prayers!….The evening prayers could be interspersed in AJ’s Story that Rebecca will write….snort!… Because some days the prayer fit the trail perfectly…snorkel!…What a great Idea! I hope Rebecca is up to the challenge (time-wise). I know she is up to it talent-wise!…wooooooo!
9:32 pm on March 19th, 2012
Wolfie, I’m Samantha Lynn, not a him. I get sent to Jacqueline’s Dog Salon every two weeks. I am clean, sparkling white, Wonderfluffed, and maybe get a buzz cut.
Yes, CHarris, I need camouflage.
9:35 pm on March 19th, 2012
Sammie!…That is the first step…snort!…Admitting you need Camouflage. Now it will be easy and your family can help you…chuffle!
9:36 pm on March 19th, 2012
Another great idea, Wolfie, about the evening prayers.
9:43 pm on March 19th, 2012
Sammie, I know that you are a girl! I only recently finished crushing on you.
But if you are dressed up like a dragon or the Travelocity gnome, the hawks will be fooled into thinking that you are a nasty, icky tasting ‘him’.
So there! Hah!
9:49 pm on March 19th, 2012
FOD = Fistful of Dollars.
(In case anyone missed it.)
9:53 pm on March 19th, 2012
night all
9:58 pm on March 19th, 2012
Bed!…Well, since there are no more Big Ideas flowing forth we are going upstairs to bed…snorkel!…Tired and beat at the same time…wuffle!…It’s hard keeping track of two small tennis balls all day long, let me tell ya….yawn!burp!

Good night everyone.

Hello there! Quick question that’s entirely off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My website looks weird when viewing from my iphone 4. I’m trying to find a template or plugin that might be able to resolve this problem. If you have any suggestions, please share. Appreciate it!
