Iditarod and Sleep

Here is another great overnight report from Rebecca, CEO of Snowhook Kennel, our team in the Iditarod. As of now, Snowhook seems to be in 22nd place (out of 78) which is pretty damn good! No point in competing without wanting to win, of course, but just finishing this particular race is a triumph, especially with the whole team happy and healthy – which is the Snowhook way.

Sleep is a wonderful thing. And, hopefully, that is what the dogs and AJ will find while they take their twenty-four in Galena. It may sound strange, but conserving energy is part of the training that AJ does with the dogs. Running and resting and part of Team Snowhook’s race strategy.

AJ will stop throughout a run to give the dogs a break and a chance to play, but there are times when he wants them to rest. More often than not, these times of extended rest are signaled by snacks of beef or fish. When AJ arrives at a checkpoint or a place he intends to camp, he will snack the dogs first, then tend to making them a larger meal, providing straw for bedding, removing booties, examining the dogs’ condition, and massaging muscles. Once the meal is devoured—a too tired dog will not eat—conserving energy is the focus. This can come, and usually does, in the form of sleep. This is preferable to a dog barking or jumping throughout the rest. AJ will try to match the rest time with the time spent running such as five hours running equals five hours of rest. It is not always an exact match.

The musher needs his rest, too. It is easy to begin the race already sleep deprived from the pre-race festivities and last minute preparations. While AJ will not be able to sleep as much as the dogs during the twenty-four because of seeing to their care, he will catch up on much needed rest. Sleep deprivation catches up to you on a race. It can lead to poor decision making, clouded judgment and even hallucinations.

Rested up, Team Snowhook will finish their twenty-four midday Friday and will make the trek to Huslia.

Thank you for another good report. Rest up team.

Traveling Tennessee folks should be close to home again. They will need to rest up too. Hopefully there will be some more pics first.

The robins are eating bread that I put out.

Howlers – “insider is having issues this year”???? Snort, giggle, gaffaw.
HOH – glad you are home safe and sound.
Barb – we cannot spell (or pronounce) the original name given to AJ. It was not in our language. And it was much shorter. In most Native languages, a single word will contain both noun and adjective. For example there will be a word that designates a tall, young man as opposed to the word that describes a short, older man. The word that refered to AJ means that he is a man with dog companions, and anorher word of his name means that he is (for lack of better translation) content. Therefore, in his situation of being in Alaska, content means ” warm” or “not cold” or even “in a good frame of mind”.
We had given this elder the tobacco and sage we brought, and told him about our friend who was out reliving that historic serum run commemorated by Iditarod. We told him about how the dogs love to run, and how Rebecca and AJ love their dogs. He thought about this for a while, and we kind of think he “went” to Alaska to see for himself. Thats when he told us he was going to give AJ this name in his prayers.

Good morning everyone. We are off for today’s adventures.

Welcome home, Sharon and Digger. Sadie thinks the furnace guys are actually more guests who have arrived at the Hobbit Hotel rather than workers. She will soon see that I am not cooking food and that she is not being petted by all these extra hands. I should have toasty radiant-heated floors on the first floor by the end of the day. I am also having my furnace ductwork sealed so as to optimize the heat efficiency from leaks at all the joists.

My plan today is to be lazier than usual.

Creator – the stars are singing. The moon is singing. All around us is the music of the earth; we lift our voices to thank you for the beauty that surrounds us

Creator, tonight our friend He Is Not Cold For He Has Good Dogs will continue on his adventure. We ask that the rest this team has taken feeds their muscles and clears their minds for the miles to come. We ask you to lift them to the songs of the stars, and let their paws skim the snow like swallows dancing in the air.

Creator, we thank you for the lives of animals and fish whose bodies have become food for these dogs. Let their strength flow through the hearts and veins of this team, and give them the endurance to continue running mile after mile

We thank you for all the good and generous hearts who have helped AJ live his dream. Every person gave of themselves; let their kindness and support feed AJ’s spirit when he is weary, let their love guide him on the trail.

Creator, on this night, we also ask you to lift the heart of our beloved friend MaryLou. She is sad, and feels alone since the man she always loved had to leave her. She is lost on a path that no longer seems familiar. We ask you to bring her soul back to the music, that she will again feel the joy of life. We ask you to guide her to finding her new road, that she can continue on her own life’s journey; that she can walk that path with peace in her heart

Creator, we thank you for the many joys we have together. This family, this strong group of hearts bound together has brought comfort to those in need, has brought laughter to times that were hard, has brought peace and reason to times of stress. Let our combined strengths be there for any who need support on this night. Please heal those whose bodies are struggling. Please lift the souls that are in despair. Please comfort those whose hearts feel empty. Let our family wrap them all in security of knowing they are not alone.

Creator, on this dark winter night, the stars are singing. High in the velvet sky, the moon is singing. All around us is the music of the earth. We lift our voices to rejoice in the beauty that surrounds us. There is beauty above us. There is beauty below us. We are one with the universe you have created.
    We walk in beauty
    We walk in beauty
    We walk in beauty
    We walk in beauty.

Having a 3 year old sled dog die on the trail is much like having Jim Fixx die running. Unexpected and a tragedy, but doing what they loved. Mom is amazed at all the dogs but she loves the Snowhook dogs and we have smelled them and love them. too.

Dear Howlers. Thanks for your help. Internet is very spotty, and we were afraid that we would not be able to connect at prayer time. How right we were.

We have to tell youse guys – we are having such a wonderful, joyful, magnificent time here. We do miss our puppies and kats something awful, but every other part of this trip has been like chocolate mocha chip ice cream for the soul.

Amen and thank you, Amalia and O’Howlers for the prayer.

I support all the Snowhook dogs, AJ and Philip. I also support a couple other teams.

Golinka!…I am so glad you are having a great time and eating chocolate mocha chip ice cream…sniff!…Me? I am starvin’ marvin and have been deprived of all necessities and comforts here – practically…grunt!

Rio – we think that maybe, just maybe you are telling a big, fat lie.

We will admit, when it comes to all things mush related, AJ has our heart. But we also honor every man and woman who gives their all to their dogs, who work hard and train hard and give respect and courtesy to their mentors.
And we support every single dog who ever set paw upon Snowhook soil, and every brave and happy dog who loves to run.

Rio: That fashionable hat kept my ears warm while others were freezing their lobes off so, no, I haven’t burned that hat. I went back to the store and got another one in a different color!

I haven’t been on the Insider very much but my expectations are low, very low.

Here’s a musher from Norway that started mushing with a Newfoundland dog. He is currently in third place as a rookie in the Iditarod. There are 4 mushers from Norway in this race and they have quite a following!

We are so sad that the Insider is so inept this year. Last year, we were glued to the computer, watching those little green flags inch forward. It was a great time of sharing the excitement with all of you.
We certainly hope all those of you who have been let down will publish your thoughts either on Facebook or by letter.
This simply should not be happening and the fact that you have paid for a service that has not been provided constitutes at least breach of contract, at worst, fraud.
We can’t even imagine what this ineptitude does to Rebecca and other families of the mushers.
