Iditarod …

… greatest sled dog race on earth. For many years we’ve cheered on Snowhook Kennel – run by our friends AJ and Rebecca. AJ is not mushing this year but the team is still in there with Dr. Joe at the controls. Go dogs of Snowhook! One of whom is named Iggy!

(If we’ve gotten any of this wrong, please let us know.)

    Love that first picture!

According to the Iditarod Insider, Joe checked out of Nenana at 01:23…so 5:23 A.M. Eastern time…I think.

    Good morning all.

And Bernie, don’t forget him. And Little. And the Plunderers are represented too: Harris, Maury and Hawks.

Here is a list from the Snowhook Kennels facebook page of the dogs who are on the great race:
Amy, Bernie, Bev, Bjourn, Chet, Clyde, Hawks, Fritz, Harris, Iggy, Little, Louisa Mae, Maury, Mick, Nate and Wilson.

Good morning all and Go Snowhook!

    Greetings!

I woke up with this song in my head today. It is called “Smooth Sailing”, and is a favorite of ours here. It has a very Motown 60s feel to it…Hoping Dr. Joe enjoys some smooth sailing…

My sister is a part of a group called Anchorage Guerilla Knitters.” Once a year they do a public art installation involving knitting. Unlike other guerilla knitting groups across the country, they always get permits and blessings of whatever public space they use. Last month they knitted sweaters for trees along the Winchester Lagoon (a rich part of town). Within 24 hours someone had cut them down and put them in the trash can nearby. This month they regrouped and did it again and they were once again cut down with 24 hours. The Park Service really liked the idea and they were to be up for two months and they were to be part of a public art tour. Phooey.
Here is my sister on television and I will try to find more photos to post

Report! We can report that it was a very cold restart yesterday. The Giant and Our Lady were covered in frost after doing morning chores before taking the team to the staging area. Our Lady requested ten handlers to get the team to the starting line as it is a very long stretch before even getting to the chute. Did she think she’d get ten? No. But, sure enough as she and the Giant were harnessing dogs, she looked up to see a wall of ten volunteer handlers. They also adopted a few more before pulling away from the truck and making there way to the finishing chute. Our Lady told the army of handlers, “We are going to take a controlled, slow, Sunday stroll to the starting line,” and a Sunday stroll they took. It was great.

It was difficult for both the Giant and our Lady to see the dogs leave the starting line without AJ on the runners. Were there emotions? Yes. Did one of them get teary eyed? Possibly. It’s all a blur. Did Our Lady tell the Giant, “Welcome to my world.” Youse tell us.

The Giant helped a couple of more teams get to the starting line while our Lady prepped the dog trailer to leave so they could meet the team at the first checkpoint. After the Giant and our Lady hauled 26 of us to the lower 48 by themselves, they have this down to a science. Once they arrived, they loaded up straw and supplies Joe would need for the next section of trail and waited for Joe. It is a long haul so he is prepped to camp. Once he cared for the dogs—he couldn’t have any help for the Giant or our Lady—they made sure Joe got something to eat and told him to rest so he could be ready to leave around midnight. The Giant and our Lady left the checkpoint and drove home. They arrived home in the wee hours of the morning to us being very happy to see them.

Fashion report! Neither of my counterparts see the need of providing a fashion report, but I say these are things the people need to know.

I can report that the Giant was dressed all in black, such is the nature of our Giant. There was nary a sparkle or ribbon to be found on him. That Damn Pixie was dressed camo bibs—yes camo!—and a coat that didn’t match. If she thinks that insulated camo bibs are going to make her butt look smaller she is wrong. There were only two redeeming elements of the wardrobe keeping her from my worst dressed list. 1) She wore her pink kromer—a girl doesn’t leave home without it, and 2) she had a purple ribbon tied to the suspended of her camo bib. This is the same ribbon she wore during Melanie’s race in 2014. I watched as she moved it from her lanyard she had for her arctic mitts and put it on her bibs.

You can’t see Snowhook’s fashion disasters on the restart replay when they show joe, but you can see the Giant and that Damn Pixie in the replay as they could down the musher before Joe. The Giant and that Damn Pixie led the dogs the line, side by side—Ole Doc and Wee Nigel say that’s fitting, but I still say the right fit of camo bibs doesn’t help that Damn Pixie’s fashion sense.

This is Belle Starr reporting hard hitting journalism atop Ole Doc ‘neath Wee Nigel.

Ole Doc beneath BelleStar beneath Wee Nigel, did the dogs see the Giant and Snowbella at the checkpoint where they couldn’t care for them? That was probably very confusing to those guys and I’m sure they were wondering why their humans weren’t giving them the loves and tummies!

I really think AJ needs to race next year…just saying.

  40. BooBear
    4:22 pm on March 7th, 2017

Also, did the Giant decide not to be a judge at some of the check points like he originally thought?

  41. Belle Starr 'neath Wee Nigel and atop Ole Doc
    4:35 pm on March 7th, 2017

BooBear: It is possible that the dogs waited for the Giant to give the command to go as theh did the start-stop routine to the starting line. It is possible that the dogs got a little love as the Giant lead to team to the parking spot It is also possible that the Giant and Our Lady stayed at the back of the sled from the checkpoint so as not to confuse the dogs. It is also possible that our Lady didn’t want it to appear as though a certain race judge was giving special treatment to a certain team so our Lady told the Giant to stand back while she did a bulk of the talking to Joe.

More to BooBear: The Giant will be a race judge at the Galena checkpoint if not one or two more depending on how the race plays out. They were not sure when he would be flying out to his checkpoint. It could have been possible as early as today. On their late night drive home, they received word that he doesn’t fly out until tomorrow. Yeep!

Belle Starr, even though you haven’t seen the HOH mom, she is doing her best to keep up the fashion presence for Snowhook. Today she has gold sparkly snow flakes on her shirt. Her scarves have lots of colors: purple, black, gold and silver. She tells everyone she meets about Snowhook and youse guys and Dr. Joe. Hey, maybe she can grow up to be the Snowhook ambassador. She has already grown out so she is now 5×5! Keep this in mind Belle, you are in charge.

Rio: The Thieves! went on a secret mission and procured this from our facebookie:

“Trail Update: After 160 miles Joe is in Manley and going strong despite a couple of setbacks. Another musher slammed their sled into his sled just before Nenana on tight trails. This broke the foot board on his sled and drag plus the zipper on his sled bag. After a couple of field repairs and a little sleep Joe continued on reaching Manley at 4 today.

He’s running a conservative plan keeping the dogs at 8 mph with an even run/rest schedule. He should be leaving this latest checkpoint around 10 PM tonight and traveling on to Tanana.

Weather during the day is a comfortable -10 but cools to a -40 at night. It should warm up on Thursday to above zero though. With any luck he won’t have the -65 we had in 2015.”

The update was written by the Giant. The Thieves! were the messenger to the Giant from Luna on the Other Side of the Bridge. It was a note they pinned to his lapel stating: Easy, Giant. Joe has a wife and mother that reads this page for update. Let’s try not to scare them with the truth. You will learn. Love, Mama
