Iditarod 2012?

“What are we going to do about this Snowhook thing?” Spence says.

“Something,” says Admin.

“Like what?”

“We’ll have to kick it around.”

Kick it around? Does that mean a ball is coming into play? I open my eyes. No ball in sight, but what do you know? A nice little end piece from a croissant seems to have fallen under the table. I barely have to move. What a life!

“Any idea what tin prices are like these days?” Admin says.

Oh, no.

“The three month’s at $31,600.00.”

“Interesting.”

It is? How?

Welcome Superdog, Shiloh, Maddy, Wiley.

I can tell by the way you are kicking it around that you have finished the Astrid story and are now just teasing your loyal followers with teeth and tin futures and an occasional Iditarod thrown in to keep us off balance. Out with it!

What happened to teeth? I had a comment about teeth. Snifflenits!

Morning Dawson, are you working today?

Snowhook has to get a lot of money in three months. We better get moving.
I’m not moving today. (knocking on wood here)
I slept in! The sun is shining!

I absolutely don’t understand what “The three month’s at $36,000.00” means. And Chet, tin futures are not at all interesting. They are only second to teeth in boring dullness.

Astrid, Astrid, Astrid, Astrid………Hey, I’m going to an astronomy thing tomorrow evening. One of my former students is giving a lecture.

    Good morning everyone.

    Good morning all, Marylou here

I talked with a counselor at the job center and she asked about my support system. I told her that I didn’t have that much of one. When I got home I felt really bad about not remembering that my Plunderer friends are never farther away than my keyboard.

Dear Lord of creatures great and small,

    This is for my friend,
Help her live her life to the fullest.

    Please promote her
and cause her to excel above her expectations.

Help her to shine in the darkest places
where it seems impossible to love.

    Protect her at all times,
lift her up when she needs you the most,

and let her know when she walks with you,
    She will always be safe.

Love you Girl! (and guys too)

Melanie, thanks for the video. Of course, the lights are unbelievably beautiful, but everyone should take a good look at the scenery. At least on my laptop, the HD quality is superb. On a couple of shots, I felt like I could reach right into the scene. Love it!

B.Stover: I think the $36,000 is how much Snowhook needs either by June (not sure how much they need for their entry fee) or to run the race.

I know they need to get a fee and application in around June. That’s on their FaceBook.

Love the idea of you going to a “astronomy thing” tomorrow. snicker

The 2010 Iditarod entry fee was $5,000.
To keep a team and equipment in shape is around $35,000.

Seriously!…. Believe me the iditarod entry fee is not anywhere near $30,000.00….snort!….I don’t know what you guys pull some of this information out of….grunt!… I’ve written Snowhook and told them we here at Chet’s blog want to sponsor the team and asked if it is not too much trouble would they mind keeping a tally of our donations…wheeze!… When I hear back, I will let you know what they say regarding this….snuff! …..$31, 600.00 my ass! …SiberH will tell you what the real entry fee is. I’m thinking it is from 4000 to 7000 dollars….grunt!

Rio, Melanie answered your question just above. BTW, Melanie, video is beautiful. He says that is his first attempt at a video, so great job, Ole!

The $31,600 has to do with tin futures, not the entry fee. Here is our smidgen of knowledge on that: $31,600 is the 3 month price of tin futures quoted for cash buyers/sellers on the London Metals Exchange (LME). Have no idea how much value you are purchasing, but have an idea that you are putting up around 8% of future value of the tin contract. Maybe Admin or Spence could let us know if this is right.

  17. B.Stover
    11:51 am on March 25th, 2011

Thank you Barb. Why the “London Metal Exchange”? Is that better than American tin futures? (I really can’t believe that I’m discussing tin futures…..)

  18. Melanie
    11:52 am on March 25th, 2011

Barb and MagPie, you are much too much awake for our do-nothing day. How on earth did you catch that?

My teeth comment: At the end of Dog On It , Bernie has a chipped tooth.

B.Stover that looks like fun. There’s a group up here somewhere that does that near us in the late or early summer. I will have to watch out for it!

  19. Barb & Maggie
    12:00 pm on March 25th, 2011

Barb says she thinks tin futures are usually traded on the LME. Price is quoted for a contract in tons. Might be 5 tons per contract, not sure.

  20. Barb & Maggie
    12:06 pm on March 25th, 2011

Any way you cut it, Bernie, et al, should stay away from tin futures. RISKY BUSINESS, and it will mess up his finances! Only for the very rich and those with nerves of steel!

Mary Lou, stay positive and know that we are here for you!

Rio! Anxiously awaiting response from Snowhook. Thank you for representing us. We are going for the sponser a dog at $500, right? How many of us at last count? Snowhook gets only a brief rest before gearing up for 2012.

    12:18 pm on March 25th, 2011

Oh no!!! Don’t tell my physics prof friend that I used “astrology” when I meant “astronomy.” There is a logical reason for it: “astrology” means study of stars which is what astronomy does and “astronomy” means names of stars which is what astrology does. That’s my defense.

Mom says thanks for all the positive thoughts.

Annie had a hard time getting to sleep last night. She is used to Biddie and Holly being in the kennels beside her. 12:56 pm on March 25th, 2011

Yes, I am sure that the $36,000,000 has something to do with tin futures and 3 months. Chet, Do not let Bernie or Admin. mention Snowhook and tin futures in the same breath. That scares me

Thanks for contacting Snowhook for us, Rio.

Beautiful video Melanie, thank you. Dog mushers were commenting on how beautiful the northern lights were this year.

Macy, tell your mom to always remember that we are here for her and that is a beautiful prayer.

I’m thinking about what the entry fee for the Iditarod is and I will do some research. I thought it was $4,000 this year, but I could be wrong…answers.com could be correct. I wonder if they will raise the entry fee for 2012. Their costs to put on the Iditarod would be rising just like our daily living costs keep going up.

  33. Siber-H
    1:11 pm on March 25th, 2011

This is from the Iditarod’s website:

The entry fee for 2010 was $4,000. A meeting of the Iditarod Race Committe was held on May 29, 2009, and that is when this amount was decided upon…no change from the previous year.
This news was posted on the Iditarod’s website on June 12, 2009.

We may not know till June what the entry fee for 2012 is.

  35. Siber-H
    1:25 pm on March 25th, 2011

The above information was from two years ago, but I finally found last year’s info on their website. The entry fee remained at $4,000 for the 2011 race. It had to be paid by Nov. 30, 2010

  36. Riö - The Evil Pug
    1:45 pm on March 25th, 2011

SiberH!…Thank you for your well informed information ….snort!… Do you think this year they will have longer than June to raise the entry fee?….snuffle!… I hope so. June is so close already….huffle!

  37. Siber-H
    2:09 pm on March 25th, 2011

Rio, I think Snowhook will have until Nov. 30, 2011 to get the entry fee in.

I am guessing that the idea of June came from that $36,000 and the three months and tin futures. Somehow in Chet’s post this subject and Snowhook got mixed up together. I think June (the 3 months) and Snowhook are two totally seperate subjects.
Rio, think about this and let me know what you think. I’m having a hard time explaining this. lol

  38. Melanie
    2:12 pm on March 25th, 2011

    Siber-H: this is from Snowhooks Facebook . . .

The saving and fund raising for the 2012 entrance fee to be paid in June has begun…

  39. Siber-H
    2:19 pm on March 25th, 2011

Oh dear…this gets more confusing. Melanie said that on Facebook, Snowhook says that they need to get their entry fee and application in by June. The Iditarod must have really changed the way they do things and I don’t think they have. June is too early for an entry fee and application.

  40. Siber-H
    2:21 pm on March 25th, 2011

Melanie, Snowhook must know what they are talking about, so I guess we should take them at their word. This is strange…June is strange.

  41. Riö - The Evil Pug
    2:21 pm on March 25th, 2011

SiberH!… On Facebookie, where you do not go thank goodness, Rebbecca of Snowhook wrote, “The saving and fund raising for the 2012 entrance fee to be paid in June has begun…”…snort!….This is where I suspect Melanie got the 3 month thing. Then Chet’s post about “3 months at $31,600.00” made Melanie think that Spence was talking about Snowhook and the entry fee….grunt! …Those two!…heh!

  42. Riö - The Evil Pug
    2:32 pm on March 25th, 2011

Deadline!… I made mention of the June date in the email I wrote Snowhook this morning….snort!….Maybe if they write back, they will set us straight on the deadline for the entry….grunt!….June is way too early it seems to me….sniff!

  43. Siber-H
    2:57 pm on March 25th, 2011

Thanks, Rio. I think it is going to take Snowhook to set us straight.

  44. Melanie
    3:21 pm on March 25th, 2011

Could be an early entrance fee where it costs less?

  45. Siber-H
    3:50 pm on March 25th, 2011

Can our question be asked on Snowhooks facebook page?

  46. BARB & MAGGIE
    3:59 pm on March 25th, 2011

Siber, Just to reiterate, incase you are still confused, Spences’s comment about $31,600 and 3 months totally refers to tin futures, not the entry fee.

Are we thinking that everyone will donate whatever they are comfortable with, or are we going to try to agree on a set amount?

  47. Wölfie
    4:03 pm on March 25th, 2011

    Good afternoon, everyone!

I thought that the majority of us had agreed to sponsor a doggie, but we didn’t take a formal vote. So maybe we need to do that. Or something. This is someone confusing, or maybe life is confusing.

At any rate, I’m glad you can take a rest day, Melanie! My mom is at the busy place, but we have a quiet weekend planned. They may go to the city to see Lord of the Dance in 3D. Or not.

We have had lots of weather here. Snow and rain and the majority of Oakhurst has been without power since Monday morning. We live far enough away so that we were not affected by the power loss.

Campaign!… I say we all come up with ways to raise more money for them, real and imagined….heh!… I’m still liking the parachute idea big time…snort!… I wonder what has happened to those Kats anyways. Last we heard they had gotten their new computer system, not a word from them since…huffle!

Meltdown! The snow and ice is finally melting. WhoooHooo! The wind is blowing rivers of brown water down the streets. A week, maybe two and these dirt-filled snowbanks will be history. Then the dust season starts until the street sweepers come along. Of course, there will have to be one more snowstorm before it’s all over, being Mother Nature’s way of showing us who’s boss.

Hi everyone. We are in on the Snowhook thing of course. We will be watching to see what info Rio and Siber are able to gather.

Meanwhile, we had another idea on a different subject to put out there. In the past few days there have been a lot of posts about what people are eating, and what some people can’t eat. Melanie can’t have gluten, and Dawson and Rio have to watch salt. We are sure that other people have other allergies or food restrictions or just stuff they hate.
But Mama wants to invite all the Plunderers (and Chet, Bernie, Spence, Admin and even Lois) to “Dinner with the Corgis”. She loves to cook, and has done cooking for people with dietary restrictions. So, she thought it would be fun to create a soup to nuts dinner party that everyone could enjoy. There would be appetizers, a first course, main course, side dishes and desserts. Maybe there could be alternate selections for people who don’t like some things. And the “dinner party” might actually be strung out for a couple of weeks, with different courses on different days, and recipes for those who want them. We can do potluck too if anyone else wants to “bring” anything.
All we need is to have all of you tell us about things you can’t have, or things you don’t like, or even things that you especially love.
Don’t think we can do duck jerky or beaver tail, but who knows, we may be able to come up with a low salt, gluten free salmon ball. And there’s always cottage cheese with green onions.
    Whaddy-ya think?

No complaining about free food from me…snort!…I love everything except Dry Kibble, Fish, Liver n’ Onions, Cows tongue, anything from China, and Sausage….grunt!…Mostly I love hot wings and beer. But I’ve been banned from beer and now I can’t remember why…grump!

  65. Siber-H
    9:36 pm on March 25th, 2011

The ice on the Yukon will be breaking up soon. I would love to hear that. It would be fun to see what Dawson is seeing, and C.Harris will be having the meltdown next. What I usually see in the Spring is sand from Arizona blowing over my head on its way to Texas.

T&G FOOD!!!! Mom and I will eat anything except she hates raisins. lemon pie, and bananas, and I hate jello.
We can bring cakes since our neighbor is taking that cake decorating class.
It is so nice of you to come up with this FOOD idea. That is truly the way to a dog’s heart.

Some dogs can’t have gluten just like some people can’t. Mom read that a few days ago in a Dog Journal.

The fun is beginning! We have one appetizer and one dessert on the menu so far.
Dawson – is it just lobster, or all shellfish? Certainly don’t want to have anything on the table that can cause an allergic reaction.
Siber – we may have a way to sneak some sausage in that even Rio would like. But the liver idea is definatly out – Mama won’t even touch it to cook it….ick.

T&G. Thanks to your mom for a wonderful idea. For me it’s very simple. Prime rib, grilled lamb chops, roasted sweet potatoes and, of course, frosty paws for dessert. Wild caught king salmon from Alaska is mighty delish too. I’m also partial to aged cheddar and parmegiana regiano (the last is from my mom’s Italian roots). And I’m with Rio on no dried kibble. Not that I am a picky eater or anything. Wookiet

OK I finally got up from my nap. First one this week I have been feeling so chipper and full of iron. Then I had to answer my email and then I got stuck on the video of the northern lights WOW was that great. And now finally I am here.

I think it is hilarious how the rumor of the amount of money and what we are sponsoring for Snowhook just sort of took off today.
Heh heh. I think we should just say we are sponsoring and let Snowhook tell us what we qualify for when we get the final amount.
I don’t feel we should limit ourselves.

I am thinking of what I would love to eat. I think that we should get to eat what we want and not what we need, but I would love to get some ideas of good recipes for my multiple food challenges.

Now I have to let Alice Johnson on so she can go check her facebook page.

Rio. What you are remembering are the Australian shirazes that my mom and dad like — stuff like Two Hands, Mollydooker and E&E. Their motto is life is too short to drink plunk (LizF will understand that, even if no one else does). Me — I’ll stick with martinis, shaken not stirred (you know why) although they are particularly yummy accompanied by some Swedish meatballs. Wookie

Rio – don’t worry, Gilly is right here beside me. She is just spending time trying to think up her next stunt since the ice path is gone out back, and its too early in the season to start herding the racer snakes in the back yard. (She did escape the other day – found a hole in the fence, took off and scared Mama to death. The fence is fixed now, and Gilly sits where the hole used to be and just stares at it)

Agree with Wookie on the Prime rib, and grilled lamb chops. Crab cakes (with real lump crab) as an app. would be outstanding. Fresh baby green beans with dill and butter and fresh lima beans. Sorry, but we love limas. Also grilled brussel sprouts with olive oil and garlic. Fresh beet and goat cheese salad with arugula, mixed spring greens and red onions, and caesar salad with homemade croutons. Sliced mozzarella and heirloom tomato salad, with basil, drizzeled with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Yum!

Ok, so far we need gluten free, low salt, non icky food with no fish, lamb or eggplant. No raisins (not good for doggies anyway) or bananas or lemon pie. We may need to go heavy on the chocolate, so we will have other desserts for doggies, since chocolate is not good for us either.
Wolfie – sounds like you are kind of a conservative in the food department. If we stay away from icky, will you try some new kinds of things? For example – have you ever had a cold cucumber soup?

  101. Siber-H
    11:26 pm on March 25th, 2011

Wolfie…about naming puppies. Snowhook might appreciate your idea because mushers say that it is very hard to think up names for the pups.
For example, Martin Buser has a lead dog named Celine Dion. My own personal opinion is that Martin is running out of ideas for dog names.

And lima beans – in any way shape or form. And all the salads – oh my…Mama is now thinking of dinner here tomorrow night….guess we won’t be getting lots of meaty leftovers.

Rio – Gilly would be proud to be your BFF. As long as you understand that she is completely head over heels in love with Jake. But then again…you and Natasha have quite the little thing going on, don’t you? What is it with short dogs and Borzois?

Sheesh – a dog named Celine Dion?? Really? Heck, just naming puppies after the cast of the Plunderers could take care of at least a batch or two. Can you imagine a team running the Iditarod led by Chet the Jet, assisted by Siber, Rio, Wookie, Wolfie, Maggie, Macy, Tupper, Gilly, Sam, Jasper and Kirby?
then the next team could be Alice Johnson, Abbie, Gus, BooBear. Basil etc, and lead by the most incredible leader of all time -SAGE THE MAGE!!!!

You know how Chet’s Friends are featured on the right hand side of the page, between Recent Post’s and the facebook stuff? I think it would be really swell to have pictures of the New Guys posted there as “Chet’s New Friends.” I always forget to look.

If you thickened the cold cucumber soup with some high iron cream of wheat would it still be edible? I like the sound of cold cream of cucumber soup in the summer along with fresh tomatoes out of the garden.

How about bruschetta with fresh, not canned, tomatoes and a light dressing and something for iron. Not liver…steak tips?

Oh yeah. Steamed artichokes with home made lemon mayo?????

Rio, I think you are jealous ’cause Gilly had a hole. I like the image of him sitting there staring at the place it used to be. “Maybe it will return, where DID it GO?” says the little balloon over his head.

It reminds me of Abbiethekitty waiting at the door of the screened in porch after the first snow.

Mr.Staff opens the door. Abbie looks out and sees snow and feels cold. Abbie leaves the door. 2 minutes later Abbie is staring at the door. Mr.Staff opens the door…Abbie looks out and sees snow and feels the cold. Abbie makes a frustrated sound and leaves the door. (repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat till you are sick of it.

Abbie wants the door to summer you knitwit, not that %&*#(@# door to winter.

Someone tell the spug to be nice to Wolfie, he is under the weather.

You better not plan food based on what mom won’t eat or there will be a mighty limited menu. Nearly everything listed so far falls under mom’s definition of icky. Her gag reflex is very strong, and many textures set it off. Strangely enough, though, she loves liver, but only at restaurants, since 35 years ago she was going to cook some and it had gone bad, and, well, some smells stay with you a long time.

I will eat anything, including the tips of fingers that are attached to the food.
