Hymns At Heaven’s Gate
“Back from Tucson?” Admin says.
“Yup,” says Spence.
“You’re up early.”
“Early Eastern time. Can’t sleep in.”
“That’s because you’re a lark.”
“Huh?”
“Like to the lark at break of day arising.”
“Not following you.”
“Proves my point. Care to discuss the festival?”
“How about tomorrow?”
Welcome Fergie from Michigan, seen here:

Good Morning, Chet, Spence & Admin!
Happy St. Paddy’s Day!
7:27 am on March 17th, 2013
Happy St. patrick’s Day everyone. Mom is having her favorite,: corned beef and cabbage, today. And she will probably down a couple pints of Guinness, if we know her.
Leave it to Admin to quote a Brit on this Day of the Irish.
Anyway, welcome home to the East Coast, Spence. And thank you both for all you do for this here internet reading club.
7:39 am on March 17th, 2013
Faith n’ Begorrah! This iPaw made us disrespect St. Patrick.

Thanks, Masquers. Whats up with the no-longer-live stream on Insiders?
8:22 am on March 17th, 2013
This is from Bear:

8:25 am on March 17th, 2013
Thanks, O’Howlers!
It’s the Luck of the Irish Pug!
8:27 am on March 17th, 2013
We’re not sure about corned beef and cabbage but mom said something about green eggs and ham this morning. Glad Spence is in his heaven and all is right in the world.
8:33 am on March 17th, 2013
Howlers: Looking at the chatter on the live stream, they say the video fizzled out for the last 2 mushers in. Audio came through for Bob Chlupach just now, but no video. Supposedly they were working on the problem, but my screen shows the live event has ended.
Too bad for these last mushers.
Good morning HOH!
Congrats on the Newfie puppy…hope to see photos soon!
8:34 am on March 17th, 2013
Now the live stream is back!
8:35 am on March 17th, 2013
Welcome back Spence. And welcome Fergie in Michigan snow.
Good morning all.
8:40 am on March 17th, 2013
Looks to us that Rio celebrated a bit much last night.
8:45 am on March 17th, 2013
Shakespeare was not of an age but for all time (to quote another Englishman) and not only English but worldly (to quote me).
8:45 am on March 17th, 2013
About the books youse guys mentioned: Mom said she read many of them. As a little girl, she read The Bobsey Twins, then graduated to Nancy Drew. She is sure shee read every one. There was another series called Cherry Ames. Mom read some, but her sister read all of those. Her sis had a lifelong aspiration of nursing.
Early adult books included The Hobbit and GWTW.
8:52 am on March 17th, 2013
Oh! She just remembered anothe kid series: Little Maid…as in Little Maid of Nantucket, etc. Did youse read any of those? They were set during the American Revolution, and told stories of young girls who did heroic deeds.
8:56 am on March 17th, 2013
Here is a link to those stories.
http://c.web.umkc.edu/crossonm/alittlemaidin.htm
8:56 am on March 17th, 2013
Okay. Brain Fog this morning.
What is GWTW?
O’Howlers: Nana said she read some American Revolution stories, with a Young Boy as the Hero, but can’t remember the name.
9:02 am on March 17th, 2013
Gone With the Wind!
9:02 am on March 17th, 2013
Gone …….
9:04 am on March 17th, 2013
Bear: I’m guessing Gone With the Wind.
9:04 am on March 17th, 2013
Also liked biographies in grade school with black silohuette (?)
drawings.
9:05 am on March 17th, 2013
Gone With the Wind. Mom stayed all up night reading it.
She also loved the Sue Barton series, the Claudia series and anything by DE Stevenson.
PS Top of the Morning to you! And I hope Rio isn’t too hung over today. You know how he is.
9:11 am on March 17th, 2013
When I was younger, I used to read books by author. It was also such a sad moment when I read the last page of the last book.
You can imagine my disappointment when I read Dog On It and realized that it was the first book of the series and I had to WAIT for the next book to be published.
9:19 am on March 17th, 2013
Mom read a wonderful book yesterday, Until I Say Goodbye: My Year of Living in Joy. Highly recommended.
9:28 am on March 17th, 2013
Wolfie, We saw something on the Today show about the author of that book. Didn’t she have ALS? She was amazing in the interviews they did with her before her passing. So possitive.
Happy St. Patty’s Day. Wre here love corned beef and cabbage too. May even have some for lunch again.
9:34 am on March 17th, 2013
The first Agatha Christie book I read was “At Bertram’s Hotel.” Excellent. Of Christie’s “The Murder of Roger Acroyd,” Dorothy Sayers wrote, “Fooled you!”
The House Finches are back.
9:42 am on March 17th, 2013
The author, Susan Spencer-Wendell, does have ALS. She wrote the book in the notes section of her iPhone, using her right thumb.
9:44 am on March 17th, 2013
I hope Rebecca and AJ are starting to recover. I think the banquet is tonight.
9:47 am on March 17th, 2013
Wolfie: We, too, have heard that Book is Excellent.
btw: Your mom must be a Fast Reader if she finished Gone With the Wind so quickly!
Sadly No Corned Beef & Cabbage for here because Someone has NOT been to the store for supplies. She claims other things took priority. What pray tell is More Important than Food?
I can SMELL the Wonderful Aromas coming out of your kitchens all the way over here. (((Sigh)))
The Red Lantern Musher will be in time for the Banquet this year.
9:51 am on March 17th, 2013
Wolfie, Maybe we are wrong. Is she still living? In the last interview they did with her, her husband had to repeat what she was saying, as it was hard to understand. We saw her using her iPhone to record her thoughts. What a strong person not to give in to self pity!
9:55 am on March 17th, 2013
Barb&Magpie: It is So Inspiring to hear about people with this Kind of Strength. Makes one think twice about complaining.
Fergie! We just realized the reference to the Title of Today’s Post. You are a fine looking member of the nation within.
10:13 am on March 17th, 2013
Good Morning. I have read some of the other series mentioned. I was telling Zoe and she said that Sue Barton, Student Nurse was a favorite.
She also received an Elsie Dinsmore book when she was small. She told me I needed to read it, I was in my 20s, that book was one of the ways people thought about how young ladies should behave. To me? It was a book about how young ladies were abused.
10:15 am on March 17th, 2013
Yes, she is still alive.
And welcome, Fergie. You are a cutie!
Can someone explain the reference to todays title? Mom is obtuse.
10:16 am on March 17th, 2013
Methinks Spence read Shakespeare as a young lad.
Hello Fergie from Michigan.
Happy St.Patrick’s Day.
10:17 am on March 17th, 2013
It took mom a few days to read Gone With the Wind. She just couldn’t put it down.
10:25 am on March 17th, 2013
Wolfie:

10:27 am on March 17th, 2013
All sorts of things to learn today.
10:30 am on March 17th, 2013
Wolfie: Tell your mom to Click on Fergie’s Photo and she will see the title.
10:30 am on March 17th, 2013
Good day to you all. We are not eating corned beef either. Mama says we aren’t Irish. Who woulda known?
Besides – she and Daddy are committed ( and that is a wildly appropriate word) to spending the day with their surrogate daughter and two- count ’em TWO- little ones. Sorry, but Mama just doesn’t get this whole baby thing. She says she is missing a gene somewhere. Now if they were baby PUPPIES…..
sigh
See ya all later.
10:32 am on March 17th, 2013
Chet!….Here’s me thinking Sundays were going to be Chet’s day to post…grunt!…Aw well, it’s St. Patricks day and no snow here so I can’t think of anything to grumble about…sniff!
11:20 am on March 17th, 2013
Winter remains here in our neck of the woods. We love it.

11:33 am on March 17th, 2013
Mom is getting caught up on everything she didn’t do last week.
Go ahead, Felow Sibers, rub it in.
Sharon, Congratulations on the new addition to your family! Take lots of pictures. Newf puppies are so cute.
T&G Mom is missing the same gene your mom is, but mom thinks it is good women are starting to admit it.
11:46 am on March 17th, 2013
Our mom says ditto for her, T&G and Siber-H. But we don’t see it. We all think she is the most motherly mom there is.
11:52 am on March 17th, 2013
Howlers, yeah, but we are dogs. Mom says there is a big difference between dogs and kids.
12:12 pm on March 17th, 2013
Barb loved being a mom years ago, but now whispering here, she enjoys dogs more than two legged little ones. Times have changed I guess.
Barb gave a Tacy and Betsy set to Baye and she didn’t care for it at all, so now Barb has it back to read. Baye said they don’t do anything, well that was what life was like at the turn of the century. They hung out with friends and made their own fun. Not like today, with kids and all their little hand held devices. I understand what Baye is saying tho. She loved the Ingrid books, but there was alway some action in those.
12:22 pm on March 17th, 2013
From the Herd of Hounds.
“Dara and the Old Fart” . .
12:27 pm on March 17th, 2013
Barb&Magpie: The Tacy and Betsy books are…Quaint is the word we’re looking for.
Life was Much Slower in those By-Gone Days.
12:27 pm on March 17th, 2013
My Teacher Sister was here today. She has 3 book clubs she belongs to, but nothing like ours! Anywoof . . These were recommended and Zoe and I are getting them.
“Harry Truman’s Excellent Adventure the True Story of a Great American Road Trip” by Matthew Algeo
“The Snow Child: A Novel” by Eowyn Ivey
She is almost done with the Harry Truman book and says its wonderful. She has not started “Snow Child”. That takes place in AK in the 1920s. Based on a Russian fairy tale.
12:31 pm on March 17th, 2013
Melanie: More Books to Read! Great titles too.
Hounds: Dara is a Cutie! Old Fart..Snicker.

Mel: TY
12:51 pm on March 17th, 2013
They are both cute, Sharon!
12:57 pm on March 17th, 2013
There is nothing cuter on this earth than a Newfie puppy!
1:15 pm on March 17th, 2013
Good Lord, that’s a puppy? Wowza.
I slept on and off yesterday and thought I’d have trouble sleeping at night. But 9 hours later I am rested and ready to resume responsibilities in life.
1:23 pm on March 17th, 2013
Cute puppy and cute handler.
I’m glad you’re back east safely, Spence, and thanks for posting during the race.
Melanie – Mom read Snow Child a few months ago and liked it and sent it on to Rebecca, who has met the author.
Is the final banquet tonight, and then Rebecca and AJ can go home to the puppies? Siber-H?
Happy wearin’ of the green to all.
1:26 pm on March 17th, 2013
OHHH!…Melanie! Check your SDD when you wake up….snort!
1:38 pm on March 17th, 2013
Rio, checked and responded.
BlueKat, thanks. I will transfer it to the iPaw.
C.Hobbit, back you are ready for life again. snicker. I remember when some one came to pick out their puppy at 6 weeks old and then came back 3 weeks later. LOL
They had a small little bed for a puppy who could carry it on her back.
Just finished my walk. Using the poles is a big help because they keep my back straight. Also? The exercise ball is really helping. Who’d a thunk that?
1:38 pm on March 17th, 2013
C. Hobbit. I did not mean to sound like Yoda.
1:51 pm on March 17th, 2013
The musher’s banquet is tonight and lasts at least 4 hours. Sometime today is a mushers’ meeting which lasts 2-3 hours. The race is debriefed by the officials and bt the mushers. So…another long day.
Tomorrow AJ visits the elementary school and speaks to a classroom. Later they do fly home.
Melanie: I love Yoda 😉 I just posted a message on my facebook site and used “there” instead of “their.” As an educator, I was mortified. I’m imagining all my teacher friends reading it much less the relatives (((sigh)))
2:06 pm on March 17th, 2013
Has the last musher come in?
2:08 pm on March 17th, 2013
Looks like she left Safety 40 min ago.
2:14 pm on March 17th, 2013
CHarris: You can edit comments on FB.
2:54 pm on March 17th, 2013
I did ask the Trail Committee if they were going to videotape the Banquet. They are and then will cut and edit, then put the highlights on the web page.
I just went through my email account, put things in folders and then erased a bunch. I went from over 500 messages to 21.
3:03 pm on March 17th, 2013
Melanie!….Where in the world did all those email messages come from??…snort!snort!
3:07 pm on March 17th, 2013
Melanie: Now THAT is impressive.
Mom could do with some cyber-organizing herself I think.
HOH: Christine is at about mile 925…going over the Mound…and almost to the stretch of beach that runs into town.
3:19 pm on March 17th, 2013
Ten more miles. It’s very kool we will have live stream plus audio for the Red Lantern arrival.
The Insider did good this year.
3:35 pm on March 17th, 2013
Masquers, TY.
3:53 pm on March 17th, 2013
B.Stover, I meant to tell you that I like your stone lantern. Have you ever put bird seed in it?
GLAD wrote that they had put out their bird feeders and bird houses. Sigh. Still 18 inches of snow here, with another storm coming this week. Or so they say.
When we do begin to see the ground, it will be time take the bird feeder down. The bears help themselves. They don’t bother the feed if we put it on the ground. That’s what we did last year.
3:59 pm on March 17th, 2013
Slowing down again…she’s going to be so happy to reach Front Street.
It will be interesting to hear her trail story.
4:05 pm on March 17th, 2013
Melanie: Thank you. I don’t put seed in the lantern (I put it on the storm drain thingy and also throw it in the pine tree) but the birds sometimes take seed and sit under it while eating.
4:36 pm on March 17th, 2013
The last musher, Christine Roalofs, is into Nome!
Let the banquet begin.
4:39 pm on March 17th, 2013
Last!….WoooooHooooo!….I got to see the last musher arrive live on the insider…snort!snort!…What a deal. Yes, let the banquet begin!….Wooooooo!…The 2013 Iditarod is finished.
4:43 pm on March 17th, 2013
There is a female squirrel that comes up to my doorwall around this time every day and looks in until I throw out more sunflower seeds for her.
4:44 pm on March 17th, 2013
Here the robins have been back for a few weeks. We also have a pair of cardinals that come to the feeder. The other day the male came and got a seed, then flew over to a tree branch and gave it to his mate. It was so sweet!
4:45 pm on March 17th, 2013
She just turned off the red lantern.
Now it is official.
4:53 pm on March 17th, 2013
Whew – home from seeing surrogate daughter and company. Her husband is very shy and reserved, which is about as far away from our Jen as you can get. But he is an excellent daddy, and today he was pretty talkative. The little ones are cute but wearing – they move non-stop, and emotions run the gamut from hysterical giggles to hysterical tears in milliseconds.
But home now, and all is quiet and calm. Thank dog!
And so glad to hear the last musher is in, and every one is safe.
4:55 pm on March 17th, 2013
OK Bee – we’ll bite – how do you know it is a female squirrel? And we won’t even sink to the level of doing “nut” jokes.
5:00 pm on March 17th, 2013
Before we went visiting today, we treated ourselves to breakfast at the sugar house again. Thought you might enjoy seeing the music men

T&G, snort!
Every one is in. Fantastic. One more evening and day our intrepid pair will be home with thei doggies.
Zoe and I are trying “Life” on Netfix streaming. Best one liner . .
Why did you say the Universe was laughing at us?
Maybe it’s insecure.
Snicker. Tuesday we get the next DVD of “New Tricks”.
5:03 pm on March 17th, 2013
Barb: I’ve seen cardinals do that in the spring. (I have a pair of cardinals here all year long.)
5:07 pm on March 17th, 2013
T&G: It’s easy to tell if a squirrel is male or female. The male’s “parts” show under the hind legs. This squirrel puts her front paws up and I can see her underside–nipples.
5:10 pm on March 17th, 2013
Melanie: You may have inspired someone here to tidy up her gazillion emails. Either delete, delete, delete or put them neatly into file folders.
What a concept!
5:12 pm on March 17th, 2013
T & G, Sorry, but I think the answer has something to do with nuts!
I know what you mean about the hystronics of little ones. Jack, almost 4, can go into a complete meltdown in a matter of seconds. I think when you start with a newborn you sort of ease into it and get used to it. Plus Barb says she was not in her 60s when she had to deal with those issues fuu time.
We were discussing how cute baby pups and kittens are. The other day someone on tv said human newborns look a little like earth worms. Barb thought that was true.
5:16 pm on March 17th, 2013
The rents just got home from the restaurant where they went for corned beef and cabbage and Guinness. They missed the Red Lantern, and so did we because we were playing in the snow. Drat!
What time is the banquet?
5:17 pm on March 17th, 2013
Pups!…I wonder how that pug puppy is doing that Mollys Mom posted a photo of a while back…grunt!
5:32 pm on March 17th, 2013
Hope the mushers banquet is good. Glad they are all in.
Soon they will be back at home, getting some needed rest.
6:02 pm on March 17th, 2013
Rio, here’s my cousin Maya’s picture.

6:08 pm on March 17th, 2013
Awwww!…Geeze! I cannot let my friend see the photo of Maya or I will have a sister soon…grump!
6:10 pm on March 17th, 2013
Maya is adorable!
Oleys, the out building your mama showed would make a nice chicken coop. It could be fenced, and husky-proofed.
6:41 pm on March 17th, 2013
husky proofed…hee, hee ,hee
The newf puppy is adorable and so is Maya.
7:02 pm on March 17th, 2013
Masquers, I always wanted to be a role model . .
Royals, love the video. What a variety of instruments. They also nodded a the downbeat.
Patsy tells me it is that time again. But before I go upstairs . . YSAS’s SO is starting her new job tomorrow. Zoe and I made a video and sang her “For she’s a jolly good lawyer”. The only thing good about the video is it lasted only 18 seconds. Snicker. We hope it made her smile.
7:14 pm on March 17th, 2013
Jut heard from the New Yorkers. They liked the video and threatened to put it on YouTube. Yikes!
7:17 pm on March 17th, 2013
Lawyer!…Now she can keep Clarkson living in the manner he is accustomed to….snort!
7:20 pm on March 17th, 2013
Barb&Maggie, That is the pump house. It has a hand-pump, which was Mom’s version of an emergency generator until last year when she finally gave in and got a for-real generator. Our well is under that building as well.
7:41 pm on March 17th, 2013
Sammie: Cousin Maya is very Cute and Cuddly Looking.
Everyone is getting little Rio Look-A-Likes.
Pugs seem to be the “In Dog” these days.

IN!…snort!…I’m IN most of the damned time…heh!heh!…Sometimes I need to go Out!Out!Out! but only after I’ve held it forever…heh!
8:22 pm on March 17th, 2013
On second thought, the pump house might be a little small for chickens. Not to mention the other little problem you might have!
Pugs are very popular, also pugles. They are a beagle-pug cross. Anyone have any pics of them?
We must say good night all. See you tomorrow a.m.
8:27 pm on March 17th, 2013
Banquet!…I wonder what The Giants are eating at the Banquet tonight…snort!…Seems so long ago that our Rose was sitting down to sup with the Giants at another banquet…wuffle!
8:34 pm on March 17th, 2013
Iditarod.com is posting the menu of the banquet…prime rib, shrimp, cod, pasta salad, chocolate covered strawberries, all kinds of yummy things!
8:35 pm on March 17th, 2013
I hope neither of them live the manner they have grown accustomed to . . snicker
Umm she will be a newbie lawyer or one that works 60 hours or more a week for not much. But it’s a start!

8:58 pm on March 17th, 2013
Yuji!…snort!…I hope that magic hat makes itself disappear and gives you your dignity back..grunt!
Conway!…Seavey sings!…heh!…I foresee him showing up on American Idol soon…chuffle!…That takes GUTS getting up in front of that tough crowd of mushers…woooooo!
11:21 pm on March 17th, 2013
My sister is going back home tomorrow. I will miss her and her daughter. It was wonderful to have her here. I will have to catch up on all the blog happenings tomorrow.
Nighty noodle you all.
11:33 pm on March 17th, 2013
We hope AJ is able to eat something and have it stay with him.
We thing the drinking pug must be from Texas because he was drinking Shiners. Nightly noodles
12:08 am on March 18th, 2013
I wonder if the banquet is still going?
Macy, Shiners?
