Human Speech (1): From To Fetch A Thief
We parked and went into the office, a very small office but full of interesting smells. I’d forgotten all about Mexican air and what’s in it. This is a big subject that I promise to get to later, but for now let’s just say Mexico’s a great place if you’re interested in smells.
A woman with gray hair in a long ponytail sat in a lumpy old chair, watching TV and smoking a thin cigar. Bernie said something in that way he did when we were down in Mexico. The woman said, “Three hundred pesos for a single, or twenty U.S.”
Bernie took out his wallet. “Your English is great.”
“Should be,” said the woman. “It’s my first language.”
“Yeah?” said Bernie.
“Graduated from New Trier High back in the day. Plus a year at Central Illinois.”
“Hey,” said Bernie.
“Now I’m back down here.”
“Oh?”
“Papers,” said the woman.
“Ah,” said Bernie.
Human speech could be very easy sometimes – yeah, hey, oh, ah. Bernie was a master. As for what they were talking about, that was anybody’s guess. I didn’t dwell on it; in fact, the whole thing vanished from my mind right away, because all of a sudden a mouse popped out of nowhere, ran right by me – smelling strongly of butter, by the way – and disappeared into a tiny hole in the wall. I looked up. Bernie and the woman seemed to have missed it all.

Hey!
I do that thing Chet does where whole things vanish from my mind right away with a single distraction. And sometimes, I imagine, I’m on the side that misses the distraction completely…
Yippee!
A day off. Work around the house then go to the movies.

Papers!… The next chance for illegal immigrant students to get citizenship through The Dream Act won’t be until at least the 2012 election if it passes….snort!…At least that’s what I heard…sniff!… Unless of course she is talking about other kinds of papers – probably not the kinds that are laid on the floor for puppy pugs….grunt!
Dawson!…Which movie are you going to go see?…cough!sneeze!
10:25 am on January 10th, 2011
Good morning Dawson. Just finished Wailing Wind by Tony Hillerman. Very good, just 3 more of the Leaphorn/Chee left to read. May go back and read a few of the prior ones, too.
There was a bit toward the end, without giving away the ending, that I thought the bloggers would enjoy. Leaphorn talks about an old Zuni ledgend (the Zunis are the tribe that gave Dan his Raven sign), where 2 young warriors find a dragonfly stuck in the mud. They free it and save its life, so it offers them each a wish. The first warrior ask to be the smartest man on the earth. The dragonfly says “So you will be”. Then the 2nd young warrior is asked his wish, and he says he wants to be smarter than the smartest man on earth. So the dragonfly turns him into a woman!
Boy, those Native Amrericans were way ahead of their times!

Good morning to you too, Rio.
Snow is on the way here.
10:39 am on January 10th, 2011
Barb and Maggie: That is a wonderful (and so realistic) story.
Rio: Narnia in 3D.
10:42 am on January 10th, 2011
Laughing here Barb and MagPie!
Dawson: What movie? Inquiring minds want to know.
Good morning, Riö (said with a lift of my eyebrow) . . .
Hmmm. I hate to tell you and G&T that my “going to meeting” hat is now toast.

10:43 am on January 10th, 2011
Morning!…Nothing good about mornings…grunt!….The crappy snowstorm is moving out finally leaving us with below zero temps and a lot of snow and ice….growl!….I wonder if my friend made it to the not-so-busy place this morning…sniff!….She didn’t whine about the weather like she usually does. It seems like she just doesn’t care anymore….sniff!
10:48 am on January 10th, 2011
Hat!…Melanie Miranda don’t worry your hat will grow back!…snort!
10:51 am on January 10th, 2011
Rio: She is distracted by other things right now. Don’t worry, she’ll start whining again at some point.
Melanie: It didn’t take very long to make “toast”.

Melanie, Not sure if this is still true, but years ago you had to have blueberry bushes planted in a separate area, because they need a different soil type. Maybe then newer varieties are easier to grow. Gooseberries are another bush that you might want to consider if you like gooseberry pie or jam.
11:01 am on January 10th, 2011
Barb and Maggie,
Blueberry plants still need soil amendments as they need more acid in the soil. Now if you have naturally acidic soil you are OK, otherwise miracid can be used. Some people have been known to put a few nails in the hole with the plant. I don’t know if that works but I have heard it talked about.
Traveling to ND in the snow today to see 3 doctors tomorrow. Should be no problem as it is light snow and we are used to it. Unlike some parts of the country who find one inch a challenge.
Shutting down now. I hope Dawson has a fun day off and the movie is good. I am also picking some items up for her tomorrow at the post office at home.
11:02 am on January 10th, 2011
Hmm. Will look into that Barb and MagPie. I’m looking for fruit to eat, not much on making jam. I like to throw things in the freezer.
Dawson: Cool on the movie. I agree with you and Chet. There are times when someone is talking to me and my mind gets involved with some little thing going on. Like an jet making a vapor trail and where is the plane going, and what happens to the stuff in the vapor trail and does it create rain or snow, and are the people on the plane looking down and . . .
Hmmm, and I wonder where YSAS gets his ADHD from. snicker

Interjections have such a variety of meaning that they have to be heard to be understood.
Good morning everyone.

C&B4!… Last night someone told me that Spencer had posted on Facebook a couple times about C&B4….snort!… As far as I can gather Chet and Bernier were in the toughest spot ever!…yeep!… Another post said Chet was in a difficult situation because he was on his own. Also, he was confused because there is a guy named “Guy” involved…..heh!… And finally the really surprising post from Spencer was that he had just written the longest paragraph ever! Considering that he is an awful typist, this is an amazing feat for ole pointy head!….snort!
Stover!… Have I left anything out?,…grunt!
11:15 am on January 10th, 2011
Rio: Thanks for keeping us non-facebook posters informed. That is all very interesting information. Darn! I get anxious when Chet and Bernie are separated.
11:22 am on January 10th, 2011
Chet is now on Dogbook on FB. Click on Spencer Quinn, go to his wall and scroll down to “recent activity.”
Melanie: You can make freezer jam you know. I’m wondering if one can freeze fruit.
11:24 am on January 10th, 2011
We’re supposed to get anxious when Chet and Bernie are separated. At least with a book you can keep turning the pages to avoid cliffhangers.
11:24 am on January 10th, 2011
Staff: when you get back, I take it you are talking about regular nails and not aluminum?
Good Morning B.Stover! This week it’s you and me for tests and stuff. Hope all your things go well.
Hmm. Must go to Facebook.
11:44 am on January 10th, 2011
B.Stover: Friends have frozen blueberries by washing them, mixing them with honey and putting them in the freezer. Yum.
11:53 am on January 10th, 2011
DogBook!…yeep!…I’ll have to let someone know about that…grunt!…I’m not allowed to leave Chet’s blog. She says I would cause too much trouble…snuff!
12:03 pm on January 10th, 2011
Melanie: Now I remember that my brother froze blueberries. I’ve dried them…to me they have more flavor that way. I hope your knee problem is completely solved on Friday. My thing is on Wednesday but it’s just to meet with the lung specialist about the CAT Scan. I’m assuming she’ll then set up a time for the bronchoscopy.
Rio…cause trouble…?? Never.

Barb and Maggie: Snow making a return engagement in New York too…
12:18 pm on January 10th, 2011
Stover!… That’s what I thought too. Never!….snort!…I would never cause any trouble for Spencer out on Facebookie!…heh!…I wouldn’t badger him about his slow typing, or the size and shape of his head. I’d just ask him a few innocent questions perhaps… sniff!
12:19 pm on January 10th, 2011
I’ve frozen blueberries and raspberries on cookie sheets then into freezer bags once they are frozen so they remain individual and not clumped.
12:29 pm on January 10th, 2011
Good idea Dawson.
YSAS has a big audition tomorrow. Think positive thoughts!
12:37 pm on January 10th, 2011
Clarkson!…Woooo!… What is he auditioning for? A play? A movie? A TV show? ….grunt!….My itchy paws are crossed for him!…snuffle!
12:53 pm on January 10th, 2011
I freeze strawberries like Dawson does. I cut off the stems first.
Thanks for the excerpt Chet. What does he mean when he says Bernie talks that way in Mexico? Spanish?
It is sunny here today. It was 30 degrees last night & we think that is cold. We are spoiled I guess. I wouldn’t know what to do if we ever had snow.
1:13 pm on January 10th, 2011
My mom has had great luck freezing blueberries the same way (on cookie sheets and then freezer bags); don’t know if she has tried other berries or not. We go through a lot of black raspberries in the summer, because she uses them to make really yummy preserves (her apricot preserves are also quite yummy, and she also puts up peach halves with lemon zest — we then have those as a special treat on Thanksgiving and Christmas and other holidays like Valentines Day). She also sometimes will freeze some of the preserves as an alternative to more formal canning (no boiling jars etc.) and that has worked well too. Wookie the taster

Riö: He’s auditioning for Louis CK. He would be the 1987 version of the comedian.

Melanie!…Do you mean he is auditioning for a part on the tv show? He could pass for a much younger Louie! … snort!
2:05 pm on January 10th, 2011
Blueberries freeze and keep well right off the bush. I’ve put them in zip lock bags, rolled the bag to get most of the air out and popped them in the freezer. They are great when you just pour the frozen berries onto your cereal and add milk. The berries become coated with frozen milk and they taste great.
3:09 pm on January 10th, 2011
Yes, Riö.
Thanks all about the berries. I think a lot of us are ready for Spring already.
3:13 pm on January 10th, 2011
Peaches!… I wonder if Debbie freezes the peaches on the cookie sheet too?,,,,snort!… How does she get the lemon zest in there with them?….sniff!….Canning is such a mystery to my friend. I doubt she will ever attempt it…grunt!….Year before last she was all set to put up dill pickles, but that was the year the hail destroyed practically every dill pickle around here…heh!…The one farmer who miraculously did not get hailed out had a waiting list for pickles a mile long….grunt!….She couldn’t be bothered with that sort of rubbish…heh!
3:20 pm on January 10th, 2011
Hey y’all! It looks like the snow has finally finished falling — we ended up with about 5 inches, which is a lot around here. We had a little freezing rain on top of that, but not too bad so far. Mom found out last night that she was going to have the day off based on the forecast. Dad kept watching the tv to see if his school was canceled — even though it’s a boarding school, the teachers still have to be able to get in. When there was no word about his school, he grumbled a lot but he drove in. He got to his classroom and someone walked in to say the headmaster had just decided not to have class — fifteen minutes before it was supposed to start! Several of the teachers had already driven in — some from 30 miles away! They told Dad that if he wanted to he could stay and watch over the boys in the gym or the recreation building. He said no thanks and came home. He figures he spends enough extra time with the boys with all the coaching he does!!!
3:26 pm on January 10th, 2011
Rio, It sounds like Debbie is canning the peaches rather than freezing. Lemon zest is really just lemon peel that is grated, so it would be easy to grate a little into the jars or into the canning liquid.
Canning isn’t hard, but it is very time consuming.
3:40 pm on January 10th, 2011
Snow! …Kirby, that is a lot of snow for down south….snort!… That Headmaster needs a good chomp on the leg!…growl!
3:41 pm on January 10th, 2011
Sorry if my past post was confusing, the peaches are justcanned (which is a funny term for putting them in jars, but so be it) and the lemon zest in included in with the juice (she may add a bit of lemon juice as well as the zest, not sure on that). But in any event, it is quite yummy. For a lot of this stuff, she uses the old Ball Jar booklet on canning, which is just further confirmation that sometimes the old-fashioned tried and true methods are still the best. Not high tech at all, but works well. The key for canning is to get the mixture to the right temperature, which does require a good cooking thermometer, but other than that, it is fairly straightforward (at least for her, but without opposable thumbs, it would be a bit harder for me). Well, I guess the deadmaster learned his lesson. Dad just got a phone call that they won’t be having class tomorrow until after lunch. Now if someone would just let Mom know about the library…
3:46 pm on January 10th, 2011
Oops! That was supposed to be headmaster…Freudian slip, I guess!

Lemon in fruit or avocado helps the fruit keep its color.

Thumbs!… What are opposable thumbs?….grunt!… I get the Deadmaster slip, but the thumbs are a mystery…heh!

Ooooh! Mom says all this snow is putting her in a baking mood. Luckily she stocked up on chocolate and butterscotch chips and butter yesterday, so she’s going to make some cookies! Think she’ll give me one?
4:12 pm on January 10th, 2011
Cookies!…OMG! Kirby get two for me…yeep!yeep!….I love cookies! Cookies! Cookies!….yeep!… I will beg all day long for cookies….sniff!

Rio. Opposable thumbs are very important for certain human-like skills that may not matter too much to us non-primates. Everything you wanted to know about opposable thumbs can be found at the following Wikipedia link on thumbs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thumb. Also, the possible significance of opposable thumbs was recently highlighted in the book The Art of Racing in the Rain, where Enzo (the protagonist dog) believed that the lack of opposable thumbs was one of the shortcomings that dogs had relative to human beings. Great book if you haven’t read it.
Jasper’s mon. I hope the little guy is feeling better today. We were very concerned based on yesterday’s report.

Kirby, No cookies with chocolate. Others would be ok.
Rio, Chest always says he can’t open door knobs, only latches, cause he doesn’t have opposable thumbs, or maybe he just says thumbs. You have to be able to put pad to pad, thumb to fingers, for them to be called opposable.
4:48 pm on January 10th, 2011
Wookie, You are right, Enzo was the one that talked about opposable thumbs, but Chet did mention not having thumbs, which he thought was a drawback for opening some kinds of doors.
4:52 pm on January 10th, 2011
Wookie, The Art of Racing in the Rain was very good, but sort of sad at times too.
5:09 pm on January 10th, 2011
Wookie!…That website had a lot of big words I did not understand ….grunt!…So I will never really know what opposable thumbs are and what I could do if I had them…snuffle! .. . Oh wait MagPie explained it rather well…snort! … Even if I did have opposable thumbs, I still couldn’t reach the door-knobbie thing and leave my house and then my yard….wheeze!… Now I’m just pissed off…grunt!
5:21 pm on January 10th, 2011
Mom just took advantage of a lazy snow day and read a book called Katie Up and Down the Hall by Glenn Plaskin. It’s about a dog that “adopted” five people living on the same floor of an apartment building, and made them all like a family. Also a good book, but sad at times, also.
Another book Mom read recently answered the “Should Michael Vick get another dog?” question. Oogy: the dog only a family could love by Larry Levin is about a family that adopts a puppy that had been used as a bait dog for a dog fighting ring. It had been attacked by another dog and left for dead. The police found it during a raid and took it to the vet. Although the puppy was incredibly injured, people at the vet’s office fell in love with him and were determined to save him. Reading about everything Oogy went through makes Mom say, “No way!” to Michael Vick.
6:01 pm on January 10th, 2011
Bakery Report: Sorry, Rio! Mom baked Chocolate-Butterscotch Chip Cookies, and she won’t let us have any! She says chocolate isn’t good for dogs. I think she’s just greedy and wants them all for herself!
By the way, how do you stand going out in the snow all the time? I guess that’s why you’re always so grumpy! It’s making me pretty grumpy! Dad just took me out, but even with my coat on I got verrrry chilled! When he brought me back in he called me over to take my coat off, but I wouldn’t go near him until he promised he wasn’t taking me back outside!!!
6:09 pm on January 10th, 2011
Kirby!… I’m tellin’ ya it’s the bane of my existence. Going outside is for the birds and Kats…grump!…I’ve tried everything to not go outside when there’s snow on the ground….snort!… Every time it’s the same story, I just can’t hold it any longer. Then it’s yeep! yeep!! YEEP! I have to go out NOW! NOW! NOW!….wheeze! … I almost always make it in the nick of time…cough!
6:16 pm on January 10th, 2011
Rio: Have you seen those ads for the indoor dog potty? It’s like an artificial grass mat that holds pitchers of water — don’t know why they’d pour water in there! But they also show dogs doing their business on it — not sure how I feel about that, though. What do you think?

Hi everyone, it’s me, Jasper, and I’m feeling tip top! Thanks for your crossed paws, licks and tail wags. It was the only thing that helped me pull through the horridness that was yesterday.
6:47 pm on January 10th, 2011
Thanks BlueCat.
Riö and Kirby T. I know this will be very foreign to you . . . but Newfs and dogs like Sibero-H don’t want to come in out of the cold.

6:48 pm on January 10th, 2011
Jasper: I’m so glad you’re feeling better!
6:50 pm on January 10th, 2011
Melanie: Maybe it’s because I’m short and have short hair. Plus I live in the South — I’m just not used to these temperatures, not to mention all that cold, wet stuff on the ground. Of course, Rio’s around that stuff a lot more than I am, and he doesn’t seem to like it anymore than I do!
6:57 pm on January 10th, 2011
Jasper,
Thanks for letting us know that you’re back up to snuff. That’s good news. I’m glad.

7:17 pm on January 10th, 2011
Ooooh! I didn’t get any cookies, but my luck is about to change. I just heard the sweet sound of a cheese wrapper crinkling — I can hear that sound from a thousand feet! Yummy cheese! Mom and Dad are more inclined to give me a little bit of that stuff — I’m outta here!!!
7:37 pm on January 10th, 2011
Glad you’re feeling better, Jasper. That must have been an awful day for you. Hopefully, B. and Melanie will be feeling a whole lot better after their medical procedures.
Mom spent the weekend finishing the un-decorating. Then she decided it was time to just read. She finished the book she was in the middle of and then ordered one of the Laura Levine books. Several of you had mentioned they are laugh out loud books and boy, were you right. She read the entire thing and finished it before bed time. Dad kept looking at her like she was crazy.
Cold here (in the low 40’s and supposed to freeze later)but no snow…not even flurries. Has anyone heard from C.Harris lately?
7:42 pm on January 10th, 2011
We have had a busy day…a large bird flew into one of the windows in our house this morning. The bird survived, but the window did not. My folks have been fixing the window today. I told them they didn’t need to on my account.
Jasper, I’m very glad you reported in to let us know you are okay. We were thinking about you today.
To add to what Melanie has already said, Kirby and Rio, there are dogs that don’t mind pooping in the snow…like Newfs and Sibero-H. It is such fun to make yellow snow!!

Hello all, MrStaff and I are safe in North Dakota. We saw 4 cars in the ditch. Most of them were close to the middle of the state. Once we got past that we didn’t see any more. We didn’t see any ambulances, just tow trucks.
When we got into the house we found six dead mice. Ish. It was nasty upstairs as 3 of them died in the toilet. There was mouse poop everywhere, even in the refrigerator which had been sparkling clean when we left. (SOB)
We are not alone. This article was in the StarTrib a few days ago.

Indoors!….There is no way she would stand for me going inside on a puppy pad or whatever you call those things…grunt!…Plus, it would be too much like being a Kat for me! There is no way in hell I would want to do that…heh!…Those Kats are not here tonight so I can diss them all I want….snort!…Probably hiding under the beds or behind the couch like the scardy Kats they are!…chorkel!

Staff!….Is there no way to find where those pesky mice are getting into your house?….snort!
8:41 pm on January 10th, 2011
Staff, I would be happy to help out if we could find a way to get me there. It’s getting boring here, because I think the rats might be all gone. I have nailed a couple of mice, but they are pretty lame compared to a big fiesty rat. Barb looked at the mouse site you had on your post, and she says she thinks we had a deer mouse this fall. It was really pretty, sort of a carmel top and white underneath. Also, mice floating in the toilet sounds pretty gross! Did you flush them?
8:43 pm on January 10th, 2011
Staff: I am sorry for your furry little problems. The article was great. Does Rocky and the Hill Billy Gang do mice?
We had a problem with rats one year. YUCK! No rats now!
The mice we had were weird. I swear they looked like someone’s pet mice, white and brown coloring. That is when we had Kats. The mice were soon history.
When OTAS was living with us while going to college, he had a mouse. One. He tried everything to get rid of it. Nothing worked. For a present I gave him a rubber mouse on which I had placed fake fur to look like A. Einstein’s hair.
Snicker. The mouse left on his own in the Spring.
I’m off to bed now. So TTFN

My boy is watching a National Championship football between Auburn & Oregon. We have to hope Oregon wins as Mom is from Portland. The Oregon players have bright yellow socks on that look like they would glow in the dark. Maybe that’s why they are called Oregon Ducks.
Did anyone watch “Downton Abbey” on PBS? I thought it was really good. I love those costumes.
8:56 pm on January 10th, 2011
Mr Staff had to remove them from the toilet. We were afraid that they would clog the drain and that would be worse! He said they smelled gross. My smeller doesn’t work very well which often times is a blessing.
I am sure Alice is out getting pets and Abbie the Kitty is begging for treats. Abbie only hides when strangers come. I think she is smart, but Alice doesn’t. Alice is alive because she came out of the woods to talk to a stranger. (Me) She told me to take her home and feed her, she was starving. So I did. She has had good luck talking to strangers and I doubt she will stop now.

It’s a double feature of Lie to Me tonight. I’m watching the second one.
Mollie ABP: I watched Downton Abbey. It was good. How many episodes are there?

In my part of the country, it is the deer mice that carry the hantavirus. Deer mice are rather cute. The house mouse is not.

Mouses!…. I venture a guess that Siberh (aka SombreroH during summer months) does not have it in him to kill mice, especially the cute infected ones….grunt!

B. There are 4 episodes. It does remind me of Upstairs Downstairs. Thanks, I forgot about Lie To Me. I can still watch it as it comes on 8pm here & it is only 6:54 now. When I started to type, the Blog Bug took me back to the beginning for some reason and deleted my post. You never know where you will go I guess on this blog.

Mollie!….We never know who The Blog Bug will strike next!… yeep!
10:06 pm on January 10th, 2011
Thanks Mollie. Did you see Gosford Park? Julian Fellows wrote that as well as Downton Abbey.
Good night all.

Ironic!….The first episode of Lie To Me ended with a close-up of an old fashioned mouse trap with a neat little square piece of cheese as the bait!…heh!….Watch for it Mollie!…snort!

Rio: I hope you get better weather soon as you are becoming a bit whiney on the subject. 🙂
Sad day today as I had to make arrangements to put my 18-year old cat to sleep. She just was eating/drinking less and less and had stopped eating this weekend–why do these crises always happen on the weekend? $350 in vet bills this last month didn’t show any “red flags.” I was eye dropping water to her yesterday to make sure she lived so that she could go to the vet today to be put to sleep. Ironic.
In 18 years she trained 5 dogs to have good manners around her. There was the dog who for six weeks when commanded to ‘go get your toy,’ would 50% of the time head for a toy and 50% of the time head for the cat. Then there was the over-eager dog where the cat spent six weeks living above the 4′ level in the house so the dog couldn’t get at her. When I brought home my last new dog 3 years ago, she gave me such a look of exasperation that I burst out laughing and promised her that this would be the last dog she’d have to train. She was also the last pet my mother knew before she died 8 years ago. Such a history in 18 years!

CHarris!… Awful sorry to hear about the loss of your very old Kat. …sniff!…She sounds like a Kat I would have liked very much and believe me there are not that many. Just a handful, well if you count AbbieTheKat, a wheel barrowful…sniff!… Please except my deepest sympathy in the loss of a very dear old friend whom I know you will miss everyday from now on….snuffle!

I’m sorry about your cat C.Harris. It sounds like she had a good life training those dogs.

Stover!…I thought you were in bed my dear!…snort!…Go! Get! You need your sleep before all those tests…dammit!
10:35 pm on January 10th, 2011
Stover!…Lightman’s partner just said “Pug” with such disdain!…grump! …I don’t want to watch this show anymore….sniff!….Do you remember that part? Where she is playing a part and talking about dogs, she says “…he has a little Pug named Isabella…”, in a make-fun-of-Pugs voice!…dammit!…Mollie, watch for it!…snuff!

C Harris, Sorry to hear about your kitty. It’s never easy, even when you know you did all you could for her.
10:46 pm on January 10th, 2011
Good night all.

C, Harris
I want to extend my sincerest sympathy to you on the loss of your cat. Eighteen years is a long life for a pet and I’m sure you made them good ones. There isn’t much one can say to take away the hurt; I hope it helps, even in a small way, to know that we’re thinking of you. Last year when my friend lost Blou, his dog of dogs, he kept telling himself that though he hurt like hell, Blou didn’t. Know that you were a good Mom and that the kitty doesn’t hurt anymore.

C.Harris: Rest in peace to your dear old dog-training cat friend.
My sympathies to you.

Hi everyone that is still awake. Mama has been gone all day long and has just now turned on the computer for us.
Siber H! -there are hantavirus mice near you??? Are you by chance in – gulp – New Mexico? Mama’s beloved, badly missed New Mexico? Where waitresses ask “red or green” and you can say “Christmas” and they understand the secret code?
Oh, Mama is so very very homesick…..

C.Harris, We are very sorry for the loss of your cat. You were good friends for a long time and we know you will miss her.

Hey T&G, Yes, I am in NM. Your mom is from NM? She is a long way from the High Desert and red and green chili. Wookie’s dad is also from NM.

Gus and BooBear. So glad your mom liked Laura Levine so much; we just discovered here fairlly recently (she wrote a novella that was in the same book as a Joanna Fluke mystery–one of my mom’s favorites). Only problem is that when my dad reads her stuff to my mom at night, my mom laughs so loud that it keeps me from my beauty sleep.
C. Harris — very sorry about your loss. But it sounds as though your cat had a wonderful 18 years with you (definitely a very full 9 lives!).
We also enjoyed Downton Abbey a lot and are looking forward to the next three episodes.
Wookie

I am just outside of Albuquerque. No hantavirus or plague has been found yet right where I live, but they are not that far away either.
If the NM Tourist Board reads this, they will probably be after me.

Hi Siber- yes she is from NM – Mescalero. So she was used to snow, but slush … not one of her favorite things. She goes home every summer, but life without Hatch chilis just isn’t the same. They won’t grow out here, and TSA staff at the airports just don’t understand that you HAVE to carry chilis when you go east.
11:21 pm on January 10th, 2011
Hi Siber. No worries about the NM tourist board – they don’t ever do anything about anything
11:25 pm on January 10th, 2011
T&G, Maybe she could ship the chili home? Wookie’s mom had some red chili shipped back east from Santa Fe for a Christmas party.
Where I live, we don’t get enough snow. sigh
11:31 pm on January 10th, 2011
Good Night Friends!
11:32 pm on January 10th, 2011
Siber – yes, she does ship it now and then. But our Papa is from Canada and doesn’t eat hot stuff – its pretty funny when they go home to see him trying to handle the food that everyone else says is “mild” tee hee. We have really good friends in Gallup. They had too much snow last year and don’t want to have a repeat of that. Get your people to take you up to Taos, or down to Mescalero so you can play in the snow!
11:36 pm on January 10th, 2011
Grunt!…Oh brother!… sniff!… Those who have snow stand to this side of the room. Those without snow stand to the other side…grunt!…Now everyone with snow throw snowballs at the ones with no snow really hard so it gets up their noses!….wheeze! …Good night all!…gruffle! …CHarris, you will be in my Pug prayers tonight….sniff!

C. Harris: I’m so sorry about your cat. Mom had a Siamese cat who lived to be more than 20. The day he died she had to call into work because she couldn’t leave him. It’s so hard to lose an animal who has been a part of your family for so long.

Good night all – peaceful dreams
