“I believe some readers who download A Cat Was Involved or The Iggy Chronicles, Volume 1 think they’re getting a novel,” Spence says.
“But doesn’t it say right on them that they’re short stories?” Admin says. “And isn’t the price – 99 cents – a dead giveaway?”
“Nevertheless – a gentle reminder that they are short stories, somewhere between 7500 and 10500 words as I recall.”
Welcome Sophie.

Goood morning, everyone! Short stories are our friends. Aren’t they what we learned to read with? AND isn’t today something about conjuers?
Let’s have a super scintillating, sparkling Saturday!
9:11 am on October 12th, 2013
I enjoyed both short stories and I’m enjoying “Sound.” Thank you Spence.
Good morning all.
9:25 am on October 12th, 2013
Good morning. The rain has finally ended. Hurray!
Bee, how far along are you?
9:29 am on October 12th, 2013
Whoa, OH: When mom was a younger woman, that phrase had to do with pregnancy, not OFA’s book!
9:34 am on October 12th, 2013
Basil & Sage: Ponder this…taco cat backward is…………………….
taco cat!
9:36 am on October 12th, 2013
Good morning all. Anyone who follows Spence’s writing even a little bit should know that those are both short stories! Gee whiz!
Gloomy and cloudy here today in northern Illinois.
The younger generation shares everything on F.B. Jack got a hair cut yesterday at 2:00. By 3:00 mama had posted 6 pictures of it, and by 4:00 about 30 of her friends had commented! Amazing!
9:37 am on October 12th, 2013
Apologies to masquers, bluekat, t.c., tech-no-kat and??? (whom ever else we have insulted).
9:45 am on October 12th, 2013
This morning there are over 50 comments on Jack’s hair cut. How is that even possible!
Off to do some yard stuff before rain comes in. BBL

Howlers: I’m to chapter twenty-five. (Chapter twenty-four was excellent.)
I’ve never had sweet potato pie. I assume that it’s similar to pumpkin pie.
Staff: That poem was about her dog Percy, named after the Romantic poet Shelley.
HOH: I think the taco cat thing is neat.
9:58 am on October 12th, 2013
By the way, the “taco cat” thing is a palindrome.
10:09 am on October 12th, 2013
HOH,ha ha! Glad Bee didn’t take it that way.
Chapter 24 was good, especially the end.
10:38 am on October 12th, 2013
B.Stover, Thanks for the information about Mary Oliver’s poetry. Her book sounds enticing.
I make half sweet potato and half pumpkin pie. Sweet potato pie is much richer in flavor than pumpkin. I heard an interview on NPR one Thanksgiving a few years ago and they were talking to people about which was their favorite. Among people who had tasted both, Sweet Potato was the winner. There is a pretty strong correlation between race and pumpkin or sweet potato pie being eaten. I started making mine because one Thanksgiving I had only one can of pumpkin and I needed two. There was a can of sweet potato’s in a dry pack in the cupboard. The rest is history.
Today it is impossible to find dry pack sweet potatoes. All I can find are potatoes in a syrup pack. Drat it all. I have to bake my own sweet potatoes for the pie.
10:40 am on October 12th, 2013
Oh Bee – you must try a sweet potato pie. The consistency is similar to a pumpkin pie, but creamier. It’s a pie that can be a side dish, a dessert or a breakfast treat. It is sweeter than pumpkin, and rich with the wonderful flavor of the potato itself instead of the cinnamon, clove and nutmeg of pumpkin pie.
Maybe you could experiment and perfect your recipe before the dreaded (shudder) World Series.
10:45 am on October 12th, 2013
We love sweet potato pie. Pumpkin pie? Only Pop loves that.
10:54 am on October 12th, 2013
Mom’s pumpkin pie has more spices than you can imagine…it is interseting.
11:03 am on October 12th, 2013
Sweet potatoes are so good for you. Barb wraps them in foil with a little olive oil on top and bakes on the grill. Then she tops with butter and sour cream, just like a regular baked potato. So much better! A few chopped chives make it look really festive.
BTW, did you know potatoes are one of the Dirty Dozen? That is a list of the 12 veggies and fruits that you should buy organic (or grow your own) whenever possible. Evidently, since potatoes grow underground, they absorb more chemicals from the soil.
11:22 am on October 12th, 2013
Pie!…Are we talking pie or baseball?…snort!…Someone is feeling stuffed up and grumpy this morning. So that means she is going to work on a complicated project to take her mind off her misery…heh!heh!
11:22 am on October 12th, 2013
Link!…Off!…dammit!
11:42 am on October 12th, 2013
Rio: Has your friend ever used Claritin D? It has to be the D (which stands for “decongestion”) and not the regular Claritin. You can’t buy it directly off the shelf but have to sign for it and show your driver’s license. I get it at the pharmacy at KMart but you don’t need a doctor’s prescription. I think I’ve also found it at drug stores.
I will definitely have to try sweet potato pie.
11:44 am on October 12th, 2013
Rio: I posted a comment that is awaiting moderation. I’m going to send you an email message–it’s about something to help allergies.
I will definitely have to try sweet potato pie.
11:59 am on October 12th, 2013
Spence: Those that thought they were getting a novel must’ve been reading every third word. I love short stories.
Alice Munro was a short story writer.
Barb and Maggie: What are the other 11 of the dirty dozen?
Rio: Echinacea! Or airborne, if you insist.
Another sunny day.
12:06 pm on October 12th, 2013
Greetings!
Grizz loves both pumpkin and sweet potato pie! I am a cherry pie kind girl myself.
Melanie: Deep breath and concentrate on kicking that nasty cancer way out to the curb. How dare it come to live in your body.
RIO! Since there is pie and baseball talk any predictions on who will win the World Series?
Lovely day here in Westchester! Hope everyone enjoys their Saturday!
12:35 pm on October 12th, 2013
Hmmm.
I wonder if Bernie would like to place a little wager on the Detroit Tigers versus Boston Red Sox series coming up.
12:48 pm on October 12th, 2013
Those two short stories are a steal at 99 cents.
I agree with Barb…if people don’t know those are short stories, well, sigh.
Stover? Could you please send my mom whatever you are sending Rio about allergies? Mom, the non-scientist, thinks her allergy problem is worse this year because of all the extra rain we had right before the official beginning of Fall.
12:48 pm on October 12th, 2013
We are picking the Dallas Cowboys for the World Series.
Or the Toronto Maple Leafs. ( and why are they not the Maple LEAVES?)
12:52 pm on October 12th, 2013
My guys and LLL are on the road! Hurrah!
Zoë’s Cake is beautiful!
I love all kinds of pie!
Need a nap . . .

Don’t take the World Serious!
Anything that can be read is GOOD.
Pie is our friend (the life of pie?)
NO..stuffing or grumping or splorting or…….
1:32 pm on October 12th, 2013
Siber-H: I’ve sent you an email message.
Rio: I forgot to say that I use the twelve hour kind rather than the twenty-four hour version. One tablet seems to last twenty-four hours for me.
1:32 pm on October 12th, 2013
I’m testing something for moderation: drug store.
1:35 pm on October 12th, 2013
“Drug store” was not the problem.
T&G are cracking me up again.
1:43 pm on October 12th, 2013
Dawson: Detroit Tigers….was Magnum an idol? Was for me. His folks lives around the corner a million years ago.
2:02 pm on October 12th, 2013
Stover, Thank you. We got your SDD and will try it. Mom says she has never tried any of the stuff that one has to sign for.
Benadryl does work for her but it puts her out like a light and it takes that light a long time to come back on.
2:05 pm on October 12th, 2013
HOH: No. What is the connection ‘tween the Tigers and Magnum?
T&G: That is a good question re: Maple Leafs. I don’t know the answer.
2:14 pm on October 12th, 2013
Siber-H: This product will not make your mom sleepy.
Maple Leafs: Each hockey player is a leaf and the name refers to all of them? Have to see if I can find out why the “f” becomes “v”….”loaf” becomes “loaves” for example.
2:16 pm on October 12th, 2013
I haven’t attempted a link in ages:
Uh…that is not the link I wanted.

Interesting stuff, some of it about leaves.
2:23 pm on October 12th, 2013
Dawson, Here is the Dirty Dozen list. These are fruits and veggies that contain the most pesticides according to the EPA and EWG.
Apples
Strawberries
Grapes
Celery
Peaches
Spinach
Peppers, hot
Peppers, sweet bell
Nectarines
Cherry tomatoes
Cucumbers
Potatoes

If Maple leaves for the Beech
Will Oak Pine?
2:34 pm on October 12th, 2013
If a noun ends in “f” or “fe” the “f” is replaced by a “v” to make it plural: life/lives; loaf/loaves; leaf/leaves. (Since it’s English there are exceptions: dwarf, roof.) But I thought of something interesting: the verb form does not do this.
“He loafs around all day in his pjs.”
“He leafs through the book one page at a time.”
2:37 pm on October 12th, 2013
HRH B, please let me know aboit the allergy stuff.
And now for something completely different . . Wish I knew who took it.
The best double for Samuel L . Jackson

2:38 pm on October 12th, 2013
Thanks Barb, I did look that up. Now I wonder if water washes off pesticides? Or soap and water? I will google it.
The man in this house is determined to take me to the local fast food place for lunch so he can take my picture with the rootbeer bear. (Perhaps frying potatoes removes pesticides.) Personally, I think this man has entered his second childhood.
2:47 pm on October 12th, 2013
Melanie: I’ve sent the info to your gmail address.
2:52 pm on October 12th, 2013
Melanie: That dog really does look like Samuel L. Jackson.
2:54 pm on October 12th, 2013
Dawson, We just read that washing removes some of the pesticides, but about 67% remains. Not sure how much is removed by peeling.
Barb got the rest of the mulch spread, and now we have had a nice rain. The landscaper calls the mulch “moo-ulch”.
2:56 pm on October 12th, 2013
Melanie, funny one. Never realized how much Samuel Jackson resembles a Boxer with glasses and a beret.
Time for a nappy….
3:06 pm on October 12th, 2013
Dawson: Magnum always wore a D T hat.
3:06 pm on October 12th, 2013
B&M: Oh and Emma P resembles that remark
3:15 pm on October 12th, 2013
Turn your head sideways and voila! SLJ.
3:56 pm on October 12th, 2013
Medicine!….My friend swears she does not have a cold, but she took some cold medicine anyway to help the congestion….sniff!…That helped, so she took some more and was able to work on a project for about 3 hours straight with no coughing or sneezing….heh!….She has not had a cold in so long maybe she forgot what they feel like…snuffle!….She says it is allergies and that’s that….grunt!
4:05 pm on October 12th, 2013
Barb is heading to the library to pick up Bone Yard, a Raine Stockton book. She found out that they have the new Anne Hillerman book, Spider Woman, and has requested a hold on it. She is 3rd on the waiting list.
Siber, have you read it yet?
4:06 pm on October 12th, 2013
World-Series!….I’m thinking it will be the Dodgers vs Red Sox….grunt!
4:18 pm on October 12th, 2013
The Giant picked up my Lady last night at the airport. They did recognize each other even after all this time. My Lady’s sinus infection is really bothering her teeth and her stomach. The Giant bought her a frozen yogurt at the airport. That made her happy. I am sure she was also happy that I took such good care of our side of the bed while she was away.
We here have been talking and we have decided one thing: DOWN WITH CANCER. Case closed.
4:20 pm on October 12th, 2013
Barb, Mom has not read the Anne Hillerman book yet. IMHO Mom is deep down afraid it won’t measure up to Tony’s books. Without admitting it, I think she is waiting on you or TeddyRR’s dad to read it first.
umm How long will you have to wait to borrow it from your library?
I am thinking the some thing Rio is about the World Series.
4:26 pm on October 12th, 2013
I just re-read every word of Barb’s post instead of every other word. She is third on the waiting list for the Hillerman book. That shouldn’t take too long.
4:36 pm on October 12th, 2013
THEY ARE HERE!
The three of them are well slobbered, and have gone out to explore the river. The Pack, Zoë and I are resting for when they get back.
Tonight’s dinner is crockpot chicken with carrots and potatos (both grown on a farm near here) with peas.
4:40 pm on October 12th, 2013
Also down with sinus infections . .
4:40 pm on October 12th, 2013
Sounds delish, Wish we had more pie to send…oh wait can we blur a pie over?
4:46 pm on October 12th, 2013
Gah!…Someone here finally took the time to put in new cartridges in my printer…sniff!….Finally! Finally! Finally!….While she was doing it she found a letter from BluKat…heh!
Blu-Kat!…Remember that article you sent about Breaking Bad? Well, we finally got around to reading it. Did not want to know anything about the ending at the time you sent it to us, so she hid it and luckily found it again today….snort!
4:48 pm on October 12th, 2013
Melanie!…Please tell Clarkson I am sending him a great big kat-poopie smelling, slobbery Pug kiss!….slurp!!
4:50 pm on October 12th, 2013
We can’t help lovin’
that pug o’ mine
5:06 pm on October 12th, 2013
Siber, The book can be checked out for two weeks, with no renewals if there is a waiting list. It is currently out, then 2 people in front of us, so it should be in the 4-5 week range, but could be less.
Melanie’s dinner sounds delish!
5:09 pm on October 12th, 2013

Pumpkin!…Is someone making pumpkin pie?…sniff!sniff!…Is that what I heard?….chuffle!….Are the Dodgers behind, also a Yes….grunt!
6:41 pm on October 12th, 2013
I’ve been told that I got so excited that I splorted when I visited CHobbit. I don’t recall splorting, but I do recall getting very excited. I love that little Hobbit that I can’t help but get excited.
6:49 pm on October 12th, 2013
Bellie!….You and I can never be in the same room together. What with you splorting and me well, being me, it could get noxious….sniff!
6:56 pm on October 12th, 2013
Rio: We just need proper ventilation.
7:02 pm on October 12th, 2013
When the Giant told my Two-legged about me splorting at CHobbit’s house, my Two-legged said, “Oh, no. Was she upset?” Of course I wasn’t upset—I felt better almost immediately. Chet knows what I mean.
7:04 pm on October 12th, 2013
Bellie!…These two have been trying to figure out the ventilation problem for a long time now…sniff!…It seems to be one of those unsolvable problems….heh!
7:05 pm on October 12th, 2013
Splorting!….That is one thing I never do….snort!…I never part with my food, ever….chuffle!
7:10 pm on October 12th, 2013
Rio: You were brought up right.
7:54 pm on October 12th, 2013
Mr. Tenzing!….Really, it is just Pug-Nature….snort!…We all love our food, especially me, boy howdy!…heh!
7:56 pm on October 12th, 2013
Samuel!…I cannot get over how much that Boxer looks like Samuel Jackson…heh!heh!…That is amazing.
Walk!…Hey! Since we went on our walk, and it was a long walk, this afternoon, we do not have to go on our after supper walk….Wooooo!…What a great thing.
7:57 pm on October 12th, 2013
Rio: You have to have some good habits.
7:57 pm on October 12th, 2013
Dawson!….Let me think………….hmmm.
8:00 pm on October 12th, 2013
Dawson!…Oh! You mean the No-Splorting…sniff!…Well, as I just explained, that is simply Pug-Nature…heh!heh!…No parting with food once it is consumed. Taking a poop does not count because that just happens and I have no control over that whole business….grunt!
8:03 pm on October 12th, 2013
Tenzing: Get your lady to the V e t.
8:04 pm on October 12th, 2013
Weird!….Somehow I just posted on last nights blog…heh!heh!…Don’t ask me how that happened…grunt!
8:04 pm on October 12th, 2013
Boston!….”Who Knew!”….grunt!….The announcer just opened with that bit…heh!….We are watching the Red Sox vs Tigers game. Dawson are you going to watch this game tonight?? I bet ole Spencer is glued to the TV….chuffle!….Pretty exciting, your Tigers in the play-offs!…Wooooo!
8:06 pm on October 12th, 2013
Rio: Why are your kisses kat-poopie smelling? Wait!
Don’t answer that.
8:08 pm on October 12th, 2013
Kats!….Beau does his best to chase all the Kats out of my back yard, but every now and then he gets caught sleeping at crucial moments…sniff!sniff!
8:12 pm on October 12th, 2013
Yeep!
Thank you Rio. I’m watching it now.
8:24 pm on October 12th, 2013
Exciting!….Tigers ahead 2 ta Nuthing in the first…heh!heh!… Boston fans are so fickle. They BOO their pitcher if he throws a dud in the first inning…sniff!
8:32 pm on October 12th, 2013
Beards!….Sox are all sporting beards…heh!…”Fear the Beard!”. Pedroia has a really nice beard…chuffle!
8:39 pm on October 12th, 2013
QUESTION!….Here is a question for either Spencer or Clarkson – both Red Sox fans…cough!…How come the players do not have their names on their jerseys?…sniff!
8:52 pm on October 12th, 2013
Score!….Hmmm, well I guess there is no score yet…sniff!…For some reason I thought the Tigers were ahead by 2…grunt!…Wishful thinking on my part I guess!…heh!heh!
Alone!…Also, I guess I am all alone on a Saturday Night!…grump!…’Cause Saturday night’s the night I like
Saturday night’s alright, alright, alright’
8:53 pm on October 12th, 2013
I’m here. The team just returned home from training.
9:00 pm on October 12th, 2013
We are saying good night all. See you in the morning and sweet dreams.
9:06 pm on October 12th, 2013
RIO! The Yankees do not have numbers on their uniforms either, the myth being that a real fan can identify the player by his number.
9:08 pm on October 12th, 2013
Tenzing: Make sure the Giant takes your Lady to the doctor. She has been sick for a long time. Make sure the quilt is nice and snug around her.
9:10 pm on October 12th, 2013
Belle Starr: You did not splort when you met me, me, me! I guess you were not that excited to see me.
9:16 pm on October 12th, 2013
Job!…Did you guys know that Beau got a job with Verizon…heh!…Yep, he is appearing on one of their Horrible Holloween commercials…sniff!…He knows I think he is shallow for doing it, but apparently that is the only way he could get the Beaus-Mobile out of hock…grunt!…Sad but true.
9:18 pm on October 12th, 2013
Rose!…That is one of the Dumbest things I have ever heard…grunt!….Dumb vs Arrogance. Hard to tell which is the winner…sniff!
9:19 pm on October 12th, 2013
Rose!…I mean the baseball teams, not you my dear – just to be clear…heh!
9:20 pm on October 12th, 2013
Wose: Not true. I was so excited that I splorted time and again just thinking about you come to live with me, me, me.
9:22 pm on October 12th, 2013
RIO! Not my decision, but 24/ Cano, 42/Mariano/, 13/ Rodriquez, 2/ Jeter/, 36/Cone, 20/Posada……
9:23 pm on October 12th, 2013
RIO! No offense taken. You know I love you.
9:29 pm on October 12th, 2013
Rose!…Check your SDD but stop to smell the Roses first!…heh!
9:32 pm on October 12th, 2013
My teams are the Yankees, the Buffalo Sabres, and oh dear, the Buffalo Bills. Help me here please!
9:34 pm on October 12th, 2013
Sammie!…heh!heh!…I feel your pain, but at least we here got the Broncos this year…snort!…Beau is reminding me that they are “His” team…grump!
9:38 pm on October 12th, 2013
I thought Mickey Mantle wore #7 on his uniform.
9:45 pm on October 12th, 2013
SiberH!…You are still up!….heh!…It is only 7:42pm here, but I thought you were long gone…snort!….I think Rose meant to say they wear numbers on their jerseys, but not their names because true fans know the names of the numbers and do not need to see them SPELLED OUT…grunt!…Dumb. Because what about when the play-offs happen and the rest of the world gets to watch them play? “Who the hell is that up to bat? I dunno, there is no name on his jersey…burp!”…heh!heh!
9:53 pm on October 12th, 2013
Thought for the night. Does Rose have to stop and smell the roses, because a certain Pug’s emails are kat poop smelling?
Riö, delivered message. “Okkkaaayyy, thanks, I think.” Was the response.
Dinner was great. We watched the second episode of Sleepy Hollow. Still not sure if I will continue to watch.
Tomorrow is celebration day! Woo Hoo! We will be down two in the family count. My SinL had the flu shot and the pneumonia shot the same day.ended up in the ER with a temp of 103 and splorting. She still has a temp of 101.
I have had no trouble with the flu shot. I don’t think I’ll get the other.
SnowBella, get yourself to a doctor!
TTFN
10:02 pm on October 12th, 2013
RIO! The roses have been smelled, SDD has been read and responded to.
Off to bed. Good night, sleep tight.
G’Day, Liz .
Belle Starr : You know you are my VBFF. Tummies to you.
10:05 pm on October 12th, 2013
Shots!…My friend had her flu shot and she felt like crap for about a week afterwards…sniff!…That has never happened before. So beware of the Shot!…snort!
10:06 pm on October 12th, 2013
Rio, My body is still up but the brain is fading fast.
Mom won’t let a dog have more than once type of vaccination at a time. We didn’t know they would give humans the flu shot and pneumonia shot at the same time.
10:13 pm on October 12th, 2013
SiberH!…Yep! My friend has gotten the flu and the P. shot at the same time before and has had no problems in the past…sniff!….After her reaction over the flu shot this year I doubt she will ever do that again..grunt!.. It’s bad enough having allergies that want to kill her off…sniff!
.
10:19 pm on October 12th, 2013
Rio, Mom hasn’t gotten her flu shot yet. You are scaring her.
Are you sure your friend does not have a sinus infection that began with allergies? We are seeing a lot of that here.
Rebecca, Go to the doctor!
10:25 pm on October 12th, 2013
SiberH!…She is sure….heh!…But thanks for askin’. Her problem is her lungs and breathing. Sometimes it’s hard – lots of coughing and snot…gah!…Fall is tough. Trees and their leaves seem to attack her respiratory system….gasp!
10:28 pm on October 12th, 2013
Later!….Someone here will probably want to live in New Mexico or Alaska (no leafy trees)…heh!heh!…But this will be later after much ado. …grunt!
10:30 pm on October 12th, 2013
yeah, My mom’s allergies are worse in the Fall, but it is sneezing, snot, and stuff…not coughing. Evergreens do their thing in the Fall, but who knows if they cause these problems.
10:42 pm on October 12th, 2013
WOW!…Detroit’s Sanchez keeps Boston from scoring when the bases were loaded down with those smelly Sox…heh!heh!…What a good game!
10:58 pm on October 12th, 2013
I like Anibal Sanchez.
11:01 pm on October 12th, 2013
Dawson!…So why did Leland take Sanchez out of the game? No hits through six innings and he pulls him out…grunt!…Why?
11:08 pm on October 12th, 2013
Saving Sanchez’s arm and body for the games to come?
I am checking out now.
Good Night All
11:11 pm on October 12th, 2013
SiberH!…Maybe, plus he replacement is doing A-Ok so far…heh!heh!…Dunno who he is, but he was striking out the Sox…snort!…Score is still Tigers One, Sox None….chuffle!
11:38 pm on October 12th, 2013
Rio: I think, like SiberH, they are saving Sanchez’s arm for future games.
11:48 pm on October 12th, 2013
Unbelievable!….Drama! The Red Sox’ amazing Closer keeps the wily Tigers from scoring….wheeze!…Now what will happen in the bottom of the 9th?….gasp!
11:50 pm on October 12th, 2013
Boston!….Is up to bat and they only need 2 runs to winnit!…gah!…Who is pitching for the Tigers? I do not know, but all the Red Sox fans look very chilly….heh!heh!
11:55 pm on October 12th, 2013
Announcers!…For this game are really bad compared to “our” guys…sniff!…Just my Puggish opinion…grunt!
