Honky Tonk Parrot

Cap’n Crunch, the parrot who says, “Make it a double,” plays a role in Dog On It, the first Chet and Bernie novel. That’s the remote connection to today’s post – with many thanks to my friend Bob.

What fun! Mom had a parrot 🦜 that looked like that one. She also loved to scream and sing off key.
Thank you Spencer for the memories.

I love it. The parrot is having a great time and the humans are delighted. And what a well-behaved bird too. I notice there was a plate of cookies and they were left completely alone.

We have only had budgies and they were characters. We had one that used to drop his toys off of the top of the TV, watch them fall and then to get another. Then when they were all dropped, he would scream at us to come and pick them all up and put them in his dish so he could start all over again. They were jingle bells and curtain rings and shiny pennies and he would love to watch them fall and then bounce. He would have spaghetti with us and nibble from our plates. He was a great bird. We never had one as good as him. Chipper.

Wow! Synchronicity! As a child, I wasn’t allowed a dog, so I had Budgies, all named Chipper. My first husband said I was too busy teaching so couldn’t have a dog. Got another Budgie an suggested he choose a name. Car Food, Godzilla and Bruce were his suggestions. I chose “Bruce” because he thought it would be a weak bird. Bruce parted his hair more than once.

I had two parakeets once and a friend mentioned to never leave them alone without music. In nature, silence is danger…so I tested many radio stations: opera, folk, classical music, soft rock …and nothing. I hit on a country music station and the birds loved it!

Mr. Big gets on my bed in the wee hours of the morning to cuddle. I don’t mind but recently he started settling on the adjoining pillow and kneading my pillow millimeters from my eye. Last night he decided to groom my face. He has never, ever groomed me. I woke this morning with sandpaper red marks all over my face. I then remembered that I am allergic to his saliva (or anything that drips from his nose and mouth). He concentrated on my forehead so even wearing a mask didn’t help much. And no, I won’t post a photo.

Tyler!…The Cockatiel!…snort!…My friend has fond memories of Tyler who actually turned out to be a female when he produced one single egg one day…heh!…She was the best bird. She would eat pizza, spaghetti and chili with my friend and her sister when they rented a house together. Tyler hated my friends sister but she loved my friend and was constantly sitting on her shoulder and would unclip her hair clips ….gruffle!…My friend macramed little nests she could sit on around the house….snort!…Tyler did not like being in a cage and was let free most of the time. Sadly my friends sister married and moved away after much ADO and took Tyler with her. Then shortly after one day Tyler just died. Of course Tyler waited till my friend’s sister came home and then died in front of her…Just because…sniff!sniff!
