History Class: From Robbie Forester and the Outlaws of Sherwood Street

“The robber barons,” said Mr. Stinecki in history class the next day, “is the name given to a group of industrialists and financiers in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Can we name some of them?”

“Rockefeller.”

“Carnegie.”

“Morgan.”

“Vanderbilt.”

“Duke.”

“Gould.”

“Flagler.”

“Flagler?” said Signe Stone. “I think I’m related to him.”

“Does the development office know?” said Mr. Stinecki.

Maybe that was a joke; if so, no one laughed. Mr. Stinecki was in his second year at Thatcher. There were rumors that he wasn’t being asked back for a third.

We spent the rest of the period on the robber barons. We learned that Morgan swatted photographers with his gold-tipped cane, that Gould tried to kidnap a Scottish lord named Gordon-Gordon, almost starting a war between the U.S. and Canada, and that Rockefeller once said, “God gave me the money.”

“Any questions?” said Mr. Stinecki.

Welcome happy dude, dude and human companion, Alicia, Blue.

Congratulations to AJ and the Snowhook team on yesterday’s victory up in Alaska! Is there a picture we can post tomorrow? Probably a good time to post a whole reminder about Snowhook, the Iditarod, sled dog racing, everything.

Thanks Chet, Spence and Admin! I loved The Giant’s words on Facebook. home. won race. sleep now.

Zoë has now finished Robbie! She loves it! That’s two of us. I’m visiting Dan today and bringing home his iPad and will put Robbie on that.

It was great to come down and read about The Giant and all’s WIN!

I found something for them that I will have Franklin blur over, I wish it could be for real, but hey, our intrepid Snowhook clan can get virtually toasted.

It only weighs 150 lbs (without the water) and is heated by wood!

Stay warm and toasty today for those of you are cold! I am going up into the attic to find a box. I am allergic to the attic. 🙁

I will be wearing a scarf over my nose and mouth and get take a shower immediately. THEN start the washing machine. Yup, you can teach an old dog tricks. Especially when our water is REALLY cold.

We won! We won! We are wonderful!

MacyMinPin: Happy 3rd birthday to Annie and Biddie.

Melanie: I love that tub. Snowhook won’t mind if I use it.

I was laying in bed this morning thinking about how long I was going to sleep in when I realized it was Sunday, not Monday and I’d better get up right now to go to work.

    Enjoy Sundays with Robbie.

    Good morning all.

Congrats to A J and the whole team. Job well done. Rebecca, are you felling better? Are you sure it’s the flu? Tee Hee!

Rockefeller thought God gave him the money? Origin of the entitlement syndrome?

Cold here today, but going up to the 40s by mid week.

Split pea soup on the stove. Smells really good!

Is there anything better than a gentle, modest, hard working and victorious Giant.

    Nope. Can’t think of anything.

(well, there IS a huge t-bone, gnawed while laying in the soft green grass with the sun shining all around. But that’s kind of a whole different category)

Off to the Mud Room. Congrats again Snowhook – you RULE!

Never did get into the attic. 🙂

Had some bad news. A woman I know, not close but we got in touch every year, also has HCV. She now has IV stage cirrhosis with complications. Whew, Thank the Creator for steering me to the right people, the right choices, and having a family who supports me. Though we have had the infection the same amount of time, as my regular doc says, I’m pretty healthy for having all these problems!

Thinking of her today. Hope she makes the transplant list.

That’s so sad, Melanie. As Dad’s mom used to say “there but by the grace of God go I”. You are blessed with a fantastic family.

Way to go, AJ, Rebecca and all Snowhook dogs and persons. Fun to run a race, even more fun to WIN the race. Everytime Mom and Dad look at the race pictures, they wonder how in the world they EVER thought they could live in Alaska!!

Happy BDay and Frosty Paws to Annie and Biddie (and to the bitch that had them, you should get more than your fair share, Macy! We’ve seen pictures of those girls and don’t know how you did it(you being so small and dainty). You must have gotten swept off your feet by some big brute!

SiberH, Mom is headed to the Iditarod site to see what’s up. Hope all shows up as it should today.

I had a wonderful time yesterday helping my Girl study. There I was, just like a regular college student. Studying is done by texting on the iPhone and having friends drop in. Who knew?

Then Daddy showed up to take me home and I said I lived at college now. Well, soon I was zooming on the I-90 again.

Another -52 and where I used to live years ago is at -62. Need to go into town again today. There is not enough face cream in the world to keep my skin “dewey fresh” at these temps. I use three kinds of chapsticks just to keep my lips from cracking. If the ice fog is bad, I may give up and stay put; this driving 20 miles below the speed limit trying to see is exhausting.

I hope Rebecca and AJ are warm, safe and happy at their place. I wonder if the dogs realized they won the race as opposed to just finishing.

Happy Sunday! Happy Snowhook Day !
Pop had to get up at 5:00 am and go to work, so breakfast for the ‘rents waited until he got back home at 12:30 ! Thankfully, we ate right on time.
Kat is to limit her activity, so we are helping her limit by showing her how to lie about in the sun with us.
Rebecca, hope your tummy is better and that your aches go away, especially your hand which you should not have been using for you-know-what after your fall.

And the winner is…….AJ & SNOWHOOK!!!
AJ and the team won. We knew they would. Bear says it was in the stars or the cards or something like that. After seeing the unusually aspicious numbers at the start of the race, he predicted victory. We didn’t say anything because we didn’t want to jinx it.
Will be back tomorrow. Until then fellow Plunderers. Plunder on!

Once we returned home from the finish line last night, there was still much to be done like dog chores—the priority of the to-do list. Once we settled in the house last night it was clear that neither of us would be awake for long. When I returned to the living room after turning the light off in the kitchen, there was AJ on the couch slumped to the side, using Tenzing as a pillow. I tried to get him to come to bed. He shook his head. I lifted his feet to the couch and turned off the lamp. He didn’t take off his mushing gear until he finally came to bed at 5 a.m.

Elim, a very good boy, keeps me awake throughout the night every time he sleeps in the house so we now have an understading. Run 50 miles and you can sleep in the house. Last night he followed me in the house as I brought in the last armful of firewood. Elim found a spot near the fire and slept, only waking when Tenzing came in for the night. The latter welcomed the former with a lick on each side of the mouth and a tail wag. Elim returned the gesture and then returned to his sleep. Until AJ came inside—calling for Tenzing to focus his attention on the musher—Tenzing curled up next to Elim.

Thank you to each of you again for all your support. I read your comments to AJ this morning when we finally woke up. He said thank you and laughed several times.

    We ate cheesecake for breakfast.

CHarris: Our temperatures are warmer than your temps by about 15 degrees. My hands sting from the dryness; I burnt the tops of my hands on Friday evening—a story for another time—so, the cracks and burns are very tender. I have found that body butter works better than any type of lotion I’ve tried. I can’t remember the name of the brand, but Costco sells body butter of different flavors; someone gave them to me years ago as a gift and I was so disappointed when I ran out, but I believe they still sell them. As for chapstick, above all that I’ve tried, Lip Smacker Naturals seem to work the best for me. They come in little brown colored packaging; I’ve found them near the regular Lip Smacker section at the grocery store. This seems to work best for my dry lips; I have cracks in the corners of my mouth that sting from the dryness and this seems to help, too.

Back from visiting Dan. He had all these things he wanted me to do. I had to call him when I got to a certain point. I had to bring Patsy in (as if I wouldn’t) and on and on.

Turns out he wanted to sit in the front waiting room to show off Patsy! Heck with me! He had been complaining that everyone was older than he was and not fun to talk to … so I met about 10 people he knew by name. All younger than he was and all loved Patsy. One woman cried because she missed her dogs. I think she was my age.

All in all a good visit, but I’m totally exhausted. Going to “shut my eyes” just for a second!

Winner!… Am I too late to congratulate AJ and the Junior A-Team on their big win last night?….Wooooo!… I hope not! Congratulations AJ and Team and Rebecca and Jeremy! What a great job by all involved. That was all very exciting and exhausting for sure….wheeze!

Dizzy!… We’ve been very busy all day and even now she has a list of things to try and get done before Monday morning rolls around…snort! … But before I take off again to parts unknown I just want to say some things that have been on my flat head for a while now….grunt!

Expensive!… I know Rebecca will never ask us because she says we Plunderers and Lurkers have done more than enough in regards to helping her and AJ get to this years Iditarod….snort!… I respect that but I am still going to bring it up. The Last Great Race is a very, very expensive race to run. This fact alone keeps many a musher and his team from entering the race. I’ve learned that it costs at least $27,000.00 to run the race. And that is bare-boning it. To do it right would cost a whole lot more….grunt!

Needs!…Rebecca has told me in confidence (which I am breaking on purpose, sorry Rebecca) that they still need to pay for the teams food and meat for the race, the shipping of the Drop Bags, AJ’s food, other odds and ends which always arise as the race draws near. I think she said the Shipping cost for the drop bags alone was $1000.00. So then add in all the food and other stuff. It’s quite a lot of expense yet….wheeze!

Donations!….So I’m not sure if you guys are up to the task of stocking another store, maybe a Valentines Boutique or what….sniff!… I just hope and wish we could all do more right now when the need is becoming the greatest. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions please say so….wuffle!… We all love Snowhook and we all want AJ and the A-Team to have the best possible chance of doing the best they can in the Last Great Race!…snort! ….I have to leave again for a while, but I hope you guys are with me for the last big push to the Start Line!….Woooooo!

Rio, Mom has a couple of items she can donate to the boutique and she is planning to include a check in the envelope with the picture of us to go on the ride. And if we have another sale in the boutique, she will be shopping (for sure).

SiberH, our Insider page is still blank. We clicked on the technical help, but that didn’t give us any information that you hadn’t already provided. Perhaps later, Mollypop’s Mom can give us some guidance. She probably been busy skiing this weekend.

Hope to see some great pictures of the race tomorrow.

I have an announcement to make!! WOO WOO

Mom and Dad are going to sponsor a checkpoint in my name!!! How cool is that!

As Rio has said, the Iditarod is very expensive to take part in.
Snowhook has many more expenses. Whatever you guys can do to help them out would be greatly appreciated. We want to give Snowhook every chance to run a great race. Rebecca knows nothing about this appeal.

Perhaps a buddy system could be one way of making donations. Plunderers could go together and sponsor a checkpoint, or meat and food for the dogs, or people food for AJ. Shipping the drop bags cost $1000. The dogs need a lot of quality food and a lot of calories.

This is a critical time for Snowhook. They need our help!

Instead of buying items or having another auction, I think it would be much easier if we contribute whatever we can to Snowhook. That’s what I’m going to do.

SH: How much is it to sponsor a checkpoint?

  30. Barb & Maggie
    5:21 pm on January 29th, 2012

It’s funny that you brought it up today. We spent the morning working on taxes, and Barb was adding up her donations that she did last year. Snowhook came up, and she was thinking that it was time send them another check, along with my photo. Will try to do that this week.

We think that would be the easiest and fastest way, not necessarily the most fun. How much is the checkpoint? If hard on one’s budget, maybe several could go together to sponsor one.

Siber, that is wonderful and such an honor, that your folks are doing that in your name.

Barb ias heading out for a late company holiday party. Be back tomorrow. Have a great and relaxing evening.

Stover and Barb, It is $250 to sponsor a checkpoint.

Hey, y’all! Mom and Dad are back from the basketball game — the Lady Gamecocks kicked…well, anyway, they beat the Lady Bulldogs (the Bulldogettes?). But then Mom and Dad went out to eat — without me! What were they thinking?! Dad brought home a box of food, but he won’t give me any. He says it’s chili verde and it would burn the roof of my mouth clear off. Mom says Dad was practically crying when he was eating it!

As for Snowhook, Mom says we’re planning to send a check with my picture so I can run the Iditarod with AJ. As Rio says, there goes my treat budget! But that’s OK. I’m willing to give up treats for AJ and the gang!

Store!….Don’t get me wrong!…wheeze!… I love love love The Store. And there will definitely be another re-stocking of the Store this year. Several re-stockings I hope. Hi everyone – we will keep in mind that the Iditarod is coming up and we will see what we can do to help.

This has been a happy day here. This is the 8th anniversary of good news. 8 years ago today, Dad’s doctor pronounced him clear of cancer.
It was a scary time for a while. Dad had a rare kind of prostate cancer – the tumor was very fast growing and they didn’t want to risk treatment with chemo and radiation. He had to have surgery, and that went extremely well- thank Dog we had a WONDERFUL surgeon.
So, we celebrate every January 29. Another year of health. Another year of LIFE!

    Happy Day to Everyone!

Happy!…. It has been a Happy Day around here too…heh!…Not for the same reasons as Tupper’s Paw of course. That is wonderful news by the way! …snort!. Today would have been her Dad’s 82nd birthday. Her mother decided she wanted to visit his grave site and plant a flower or a flower pot. She had this cement mixture she took with her….sniff!… She also wanted to visit her dad’s only living family member, the infamous Aunt Lilly…heh!…So that meant we had the house all to ourselves this morning and into the afternoon….Woooo!…It was quiet and peaceful. Beau and I did not argue, we snoozed and she baked Banana Bread. Stover’s Recipe!….snort!… She said it is the best Banana Bread she has ever made. One small difference she added to the recipe was ½ cup of chocolate chips….heh!…Best Ever morning and afternoon….wooo!…Even when she was gone shopping, Beau did not do anything bad…heh!…What a great day!

What can I say, I am speechless, honored, amazed and grateful. Our dog dish runneth over once again. I’m sure that twirling will commence at Snowhook soon, but right now I am in a state of shock at your kindness and support. AJ and I put everything we have and then some into the dogs and running the race, and your committment to our small kennel is overwhelming. I take my promise to AJ to do everything I can to get him to the starting line very seriously…Thank you.

We are filing our taxes soon and hope to get money back; whatever money we receive back from taxes will go towards the race. I have been saving my airline miles to buy my airfare to Nome/finish line. I’ve also reached out to a couple of potential corporate sponsors; one has said they will do something but no details, yet. A group made a few hundred dog booties for us which we’ve added to the couple hundred we are able to reuse from last year’s race. All of these things are listed in my positive column.

Now for housekeeping: Some questions have been asked or topics brought to the surface; I will do my best to address each.

I haven’t invested in Hawaiian pants, but it seems like our puggy bank has been emptied more than it has been filled. There were a few times since this summer that I’ve had funds saved for buying materials to make booties, but we’ve had to put the money towards something else: dog food. In the race season we increase the amount and quality of the kibble and this year we have more dogs in our race pool than every before which has left their stomachs full, but our bank account empty. The dogs will always, always eat before we do.

I once heard someone say it takes anywhere from $60k – $100k to do the race right. We calculated the cost to run this year’s race to be $27k. Rio is correct—this is bare bones. We only purchase new items/gear that shouldn’t be reused or can’t be repaired, but I do my best to repair the soft goods like dog jackets and AJ’s gear. A few years ago I bought some used dog jackets for $5 a piece and repaired and reinforced them—I say Snowhook won’t be winning any best dressed contests any time soon which is fine—we’re focusing on personality.

AJ went to the feed store last week to buy our regular amount of kibble for the next week and many mushers were there buying large amounts of lard and meat for the race. Once it’s gone it’s gone and may not be available again by the time we need it so AJ muscled and elbowed his way in order to get some of the meat and lard we needed—this purchase, while necessary wasn’t planned for this week which is why AJ decided to run the 200 mile race rather than the 300. The race’s purse will probably cover our entrance fee for the 200 mile race which is a relief.

What does AJ eat on the race? Last year I ordered 10 naked burritos (burrito fixings in a bowl) and sealed and froze them for AJ’s food. The previous year that fine dinning establishment gave the food to us as a in kind sponsorship, but the marketing person has since left. After a while on the trail, AJ starts to crave citrus. I peeled several dozen Clementine’s last year and froze them. He also eats caramelo candy bars like they’re going out of style on the trail—he says they freeze and taste great. Personally, my trail vice is frozen gummy bears—delish! This weekend’s race was peanut butter and honey sammiches.

Does that cover it? I think so, but if not, I’m happy to answer questions that I forgot.

I want to stress, please do not go without in order to sponsor Snowhook. It would make me sick to think that someone stretched their budget too far for us to chase this dream.

Also, before I forget and Chicken Lady Barb reminded me, sponsorships to Snowhook aren’t tax deductible. Although it feels like it, we’re not a nonprofit or charitable organization.

I’ve received a couple of emails asking for a list of checkpoints. I will include them in a separate post.

Rio mentioned that I’ve been planning something of my own. As usual, he and his flat head are correct. I was going to announce it on Facebookie, but you’ll now be the first to know. Snowhook will host a drawing for a second quilt that AJs sister had made for our fund raising efforts. Tickets will sell for $15 per entrance or $25 for two. The quilt is different than the one that was auctioned off for Christmas. The window will open on February 1st and the winner will be chosen on February 16th, the day Snowhook’s drop bags are due. Maybe I can borrow Chet’s random number generator.

I also have another idea that I haven’t completely v-e-t-ted, yet. I’ve been thinking about doing another drawing for a Snowhook Swag Bag (logo sweatshirt, calendar, etc) for all of our fans on facebookie if we are able to reach 500 fans by the start of the race. Still pondering this one…

Takotna, Ruby and Safety have already been sponsored earlier this season. Takotna was sponsored by an anonymous Plunderer in honor of Mollypop. The same anonymous Plunderer sponsored Safety in honor of my dear Howard.

Food!…. Me and my friend really want to Feed The Giant On the 2012 Iditarod Trail this year. Can anyone else help me with this mighty mission? …heh! …Rebecca, bless her heart, never did give an amount, so if some of you want to partner up with us we can privately discuss the amount….heh!

Rebecca, Mom said I could pick out my own checkpoint to sponsor. Could I please have Rainy Pass? It is in the Alaska Range and it is beautiful.
I need to stay as far away from Norton Sound as possible because in the summertime it isn’t frozen and water freaks me out.

Mom will cover my latest expense tomorrow and pay it online.

Rio: we calculate that AJs people food will be $200. It is a very specialized diet of naked burritos, clementines, caramels, snickers, beef jerky and Gatorade. Feeding a giant is not for the faint of heart.

Diet!….Pardon me Rebecca, but $200.00 does not seem like enough to feed a Giant a properly balanced dietl on a rugged trail for up to two weeks…grunt!… What about adding more Carbs and Protein and Fruit to his diet…sniff!…. I hope I can get some guys to join me in this endeavor and we can up his Giant Diet Budget….gruffle!

Rio, Mom says we can send another check for 1/4 of the budget amount for AJ’s food. If we can get a couple more folks to chip in we can cover that expense. Do you want Mom to email you at riotheevilpug@yahoo.com to firm up plans? (We think that is your SDD address.)

The number of dogs we have in the house tonight seems to be increasing. Six, count ’em, six sleepind dogs are all around me. I love it.

Melanie: I meant to tell you that Franklin blurred over this afternoon, did a lap in the fire heated hot tub, ate a slice of cheesecake and blurred back home. I did send him with an extra slice to take back to you, but my guess is that, er, things happened along the way.

I would imagine that the musher’s diet is primarily determined by what the musher wants? I guess that taking the picnic basket, china and silver is optional.

Hey, y’all! Mom fell asleep on the couch, but when she woke up there was a movie on the television all about newspapers, like where she used to work, so she had to watch it. And now she’s wide awake. She says she’ll be happy to join Rio and Gus & BooBear in Feeding the Giant on the trip to Nome. So Rio, check your SDD when you get a chance! (‘Cuz I assume you’re sleeping right about now!)

Mollypop’s Mom: I hope you’re not reading this right now, either, because you should be sleeping! I hope you feel tiptop and perky real soon!!!

Macy: Happy day-after-your-girls’-birthday! (I don’t think I said it anytime before midnight!)

T&G: All happiness and many more years of good health to your dad!

    I hope I haven’t forgotten anybody, but if I have: feel better/congratulations/Happy Birthday/Happy Anniversary/Happy Whatever!!!

    G’night, y’all!

    Staff: Checked and responded.

Macy: AJ keeps a close eye on what goes into the dogs’ stomach (and also what comes out). He is much more concerned with their diet than his diet. We try to send things out on the trail that are easy to heat up if it requires it at all, can provided quick energy like the candy bars, helps him stay hydrated and that he can eat with one hand while he holds onto the sled with the other. Many of the checkpoints will have food for the mushers, but it’s on the trail that he sticks to his special diet.

KirbyT: I’m so glad to see your floppy-eared self on the blog again.
