Hill Country

“Back from your trip?” says Admin. “Anything interesting to report?”

“When I was in Austin for the Texas Library Association Conference,” says Spence, “I had time for a quick swing into Hill Country. I saw bluebonnets.”

“That’s it?”

“They’re very nice.”

Good morning, everyone! Welcome home, OFA. Beautiful, those bluebonnets.
What, Wednesday, already? Celebrate Earth Day!

The bluebonnets are very pretty during this time of year. They don’t bloom long, but a lot of people drive to the hill country to see the fields and fields of wild flowers.

Mom only has 3 more days at her old job, then starts the new one on Monday! She feels very sentimental about the old job since she has worked there FOREVER, but is excited about the new job too. She has been training her replacement this week. Very competent lady, but it is impossible to show her everything. Some things just happen and you can’t train for them.

I sure hope Mom does good at her new job. I very much like my kibble and my canned food. She keeps talking about having to do better with the budget, but I think that means she could just get rid of that chicken eating dog myself!!

I had to look up Julian Onderdonk. Impressionist painter from Texas. His work is lovely. (Thank you Spence.) Here’s a link:

Rio: NBC has cancelled Allegiance so I’m hesitant to watch any more episodes. (I still get angry about Rubicon.) Do you think the story will be completed by the final episode or will we be left hanging on the cliff?

    Good morning all.

Good morning. We would love to go to Hill Country and see those bluebonnets. Thank you for the pretty picture, Spence.
This site has an awesome time-lapse video of Manhattan island from 1515 to the present.

The bluebonnets are beautiful. Have seen them on tv but never in person.

Howlers, that time lapse video is amazing. May have to watch it a few times more.

Just went outside and there were some strange frozen things falling from the sky. Not snowflakes, more like frozen rain. This is end of April folks! Mother Nature, this is not funny!

They are talking about putting a woman’s face on the $20 bill. Eleanor Roosevelt got the most votes in an opinion poll.

Bluebells are indeed a beautiful gift of nature.

Ok, we need to climb up on our soapbox just for a minute or two. We must weigh in on the controversy of the $20 bill.

Please realize that this is not just an issue of having a woman honored and remembered by history. It also has to do with the removal of one of the most hated figures of Native American history, and exposing Jackson for the racist leader he was – one who is arguably one of the reasons Native American tribes were decimated.
During Jackson’s reign, he signed the Indian Removal Act,(May 1830) thereby throwing the so-called Five Civilized Tribes off the land they had inhabited, farmed and settled into communities for hundreds of years. Said land was coveted by the anglo colonists, and many future cotton plantations were developed by the theft of these lands from which the Natives were forcibly removed.
The Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, Seminole were forced to leave their homes, and walk to the newly proclaimed Indian Territory, know known as Oklahoma. This forced migration under army guard is known as The Trail of Tears, where one of every 10 people dies of exhaustion, starvation or exposure. Oklahoma was supposed to belong to the Native people for the rest of time – and we all know how that worked out once oil was discovered, and land hungry settlers needed more space to claim.
Jackson is no less a the author of genocide to Native people than Hitler is to the Jewish population. Can you imagine a German bill with his picture on it?
Many Native people, especially those of the tribes most affected by Jackson, refuse to carry $20 bills for this reason. Why is this man held up as an icon of history? It is time his image is replaced by one of ANYONE, man, woman or child, who does not have such evil in their history, no matter what the cost. How often does the US Mint already change bills? Within the last few years, most bills have been changed to include more anti-forgery devices. No one complained about the cost of those changes. Is it not worth the cost of removing the portrait of one of the authors of American genocide to a more positive role model?
Ok, got that off our chests. Getting down off the soapbox.

I wouldn’t mind changes in money. I do wish the Treasury would finally give up on the dollar coin. The two women introduced on the dollar coins were huge, costly failures. The coins are heavy and not very usable though ironically the local car wash dispenses change in dollar coins. I also think we should give up the penny since it costs 3+ cents to make each one and they clutter up my change purse. The only place the $2 bill seems to be used a lot is in Oregon (and that might have changed since it has been a long time since I’ve visited).

I appreciate most of the historical figures on our paper money but would like to see current presidents on half dollar coins as an ongoing historical feature.

Here is another reason why Jackson shouldn’t be on the $20 bill (from Wikipeadia) “The placement of Jackson on the $20 bill may be a historical irony; as president, he vehemently opposed both the National Bank and paper money and made the goal of his administration the destruction of the National Bank.”

  14. Barb, Maggie and Lucy
    2:19 pm on April 22nd, 2015

OK, we are 150% for removing him from the bill. I never realized how personally involved Jackson was in these atrocities. Yes, get rid of him. Fitting that Wilma Mankiller is one of the women being considered. I think Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman are the other two.

I have another difficult rescue cat. (I can hear T&G saying, “Is there any other kind?”) Her owner died and none of the adult children wanted her. She was given away and then ran away and ended up at the shelter. After a week she failed her “personality evaluation” so we were called. She hisses at me (not ready to make friends yet). I set her up in the small bedroom and go in everyday to take a 30-minute nap so she can get used to me. She is at least enjoying her food and some peace and quiet.

I am full up with adult rescue cats and am hoping that a couple get adopted soon as the kitten season is about to hit. Once the kittens arrive, it is much harder to get the adults adopted.

Rosa Parks comes to mind, as does a Suffragette.

I agree with you guys about Jackson and his place in history. He should be removed from the $20 bill. I don’t care who they replace him with as long as it is someone worthy of being on the bill.

Thanks Howlers. I clicked on Read More for each candidate. There was a lot of good information on each woman. Eleanor has a large majority of the vote, but perhaps partially because she is so well known. Her info was a little misleading in saying that despite FDR’s infidelities she steadfastly supported him. I guess she did on some level, but she also moved into her own residence and had a limited relationship with him.

Hello All–Not a great instructional day–I wonder if I’m actually doing anyone any good…(sigh).
I was intrigued by yesterday’s hippie chick discussion (and I agree with bell bottoms, bell sleeves, paisley, but also minis and–I think–boots). A few years ago I gave a paper discussing cultural differences (reflective of their times) in Star Trek Classic v. Star Trek TNG and tried to honor the spirit of the original by wearing an A-line paisley tunic (which makes a perfect minidress on a short woman) with thigh-high purple boots.
Don’t know if the audience got it or not, but I enjoyed playing dress-up.
Is T and G’s Mom dressing the Corgis up as hippies? Will photos be forthcoming?

Since it is going to get down into the 20’s tonight she would like to get it out of the car and into the warm house. sniff.

But right now she is going to ice her swollen knee. sob sob sob.

BTW the little kittens were very nice on the trip once Keiko freed them from the kat karrier. I think that kat’s name should really be Houdini. She cried extremely loudly until she was out. Then Henry cried because he was lonely without her. I had to open the zipper more for him because, unlike his sister, he doesn’t do zippers.

I candled the house for me and my sisters and it was very emotional. Then I called Dad and thanked him for the wonderful safe childhood. Then we left. Hopefully with my little computer safe in the car.

Dawson emailed me and she and son Paul arrived in Bellingham today. She says they will not be unpacking until tomorrow. I wonder how the canoe fared after all the supporting stuff of A Catty Librarian and the other grand children was removed from the truck? The canoe rode on top of it all.

We are in Bellingham after having traveled about 1800 miles and dropping off items at A Catty’s, her daughter’s house and my eldest son’s house in Montana. Now I will unload everything else here at my younger son’s house and then pack everything I can possibly fit into my enormous suitcase before I head across the border.
