Here’s To Patrick

“I just don’t understand,” Bernie says. He and Suzie are out on the patio drinking coffee. It’s early: mist is rising from the canyon, a very pretty sight, with the sun just poking up and making gold streaks in the mist here and there.

Bernie tosses the paper aside. “It’s this horribly abused pit bull found at the bottom of a trash chute in New Jersey. According to the vet where he’s being treated – they named him Patrick – the doctors at the clinic thought he’d be dead within the hour, he was in such awful shape. Starved and emaciated, curled up in a ball, couldn’t walk. What’s in some people?”

Suzie takes Bernie’s hand. I kind of squeeze in between them.

Welcome dude with orange toy.

And here’s a thought for Wookie’s grandpa; and another for C. Harris and father.

    First?? Really?
Bernie, there are some dogs, as well as some people who just won’t give up, or give in.
And there are some people who really need to be horsewhipped!

We just read about him this morning. We considered posting it on our blog but ran out of time. We are so hoping that he continues to make a full recovery so he can go to a great home. Like Tivi did. Have you read Tivi’s Tumbr blog? He was burned and abused and almost dead and now he’s living a great life in Oregon with his best friend, Jonathan.

Well folks, I read the blog from last night and started crying. This is NOT how I want to start my morning. Reading Riö’s synopsis of the members in this blog, then Rebecca’s reply was great. But I’m shaking my head here . . .

Stepping out of the virtual reality of our world here, Riö is a character with a grumpy disposition. THAT does not mean his FRIEND is. ALL of US who are using our dogs or Kats or pigs or whatever as our avatars are doing it from THEIR point of view.

As C.Harris said we have plenty of troubles of our own.

We have learned not to talk about politics, we can get through this. I thought we supported each other here.

But I’m crying, and I don’t like it.

Chet, that’s good of you to give yourself to give hugs. That poor dog.

Signing off for most of the day. Melanie

I think Patrick sounds like a Plunderer. Chet, Bernie, Spence and Admin are wonderful and balanced and keep this blog a fun spot. Thank you. And in addition to that they give us novels with great stories and adventures! Thank you again.

Best wishes to Wookie’s grandpa and to CHarris’ father.

Dawson: I love your comment from this morning (on yesterday’s post).

No need to cry Melanie. We’ll keep plundering on.

Good morning, y’all! It’s such a beautiful morning here — I hope all of you are having a beautiful spring day!

CHarris: I was so sorry to hear about your father. I hope he’s doing well.

Wookie: I hope you get to see your grandpa this weekend. Tummies are great!

My best to each and every dog, kat and two-legged on the blog. Have a great, great day!!!

    C. Harris, Human and doggie prayers going out to you and your father today. Also to Wookie’s Grandpa. Get some tummies, Wookie!

I went back and read Dawson’s earlier entry and I can’t add much to that. Melanie, as usual, has a heart of gold and a forgiving nature, but we tend to side with Dawson on this one.

Barb speaking here – I get the grumpy pug persona, and Rio is quite humorous and funny MOST of the time. When his humor spills over into biting cruelty, and yes, rudeness, that is uncomfortable for me and others, and doesn’t have a place on the blog.

Last week, Maggie made a comment, funny I thought, that she aspires to be like Natasha. Rio said Barb and Natasha’s intelligence were as far apart as the Grand Canyon, and Barb could only reach that height by pack mule. No one came to my defense, so I thought maybe I was being too sensitive. But you know what? I was hurt and offended. I realize that I am not the creative writer that some here are, but I feel that I have as much right to be here as anyone else. And I do add positive things to the blog, in my own way.

I also totallly enjoy the dialogue with other blog members and feel that this experience has enriched my life. I don’t feel that I, or anyone else, deserves to by bullied. We don’t have many rules here, and we are a pretty liberal group, so I don’t think it is too much to ask to refrain from meaness.

If Rio and friend are having troubles, just come out with it, and everyone will be more than supportive. We are a good group!

What we do know is that we all care about each other. We will get through this. And why? Because we are the Plunderers and that is what we do. We Plunder on, through good times and bad.

    10:26 am on April 8th, 2011

B&M: I was going to go back and look at that, but I couldn’t remember when it was. I thought it was the other way around, that Natasha couldn’t reach that height. Cuz Barb knows all about tin futures, but Natasha gets everything wrong! I hope that’s what Rio meant!!!

I don’t want to beat a dead horse or a dead pack mule….but the first part of his comment was that our intelligence was as far apart as the Grand Canyon.Funny so far. The 2nd part said Barb could only reach that height by pack mule. That was the part that stung! Good analogy, I guess, but I took it as mean-spirited.

Well said, Barb. I apologize for not coming to your defense. I almost did, but sometimes i can be a coward.

You know, I think that now is a good time to address this issue in an honest and loving manner.

    This is where I stand:

Rio…I am so amazed by your brilliant creativity. In so many ways, you are the heart of our blog. You have the best ideas, the best prayers, and you are so special. You make me laugh in ways that no one else can. I love you, even though we have never met.

When I first started following the blog, I lurked for serveral months before I started posting. It was such fun trying to figure out who everyone was. I finally jumped in, and immediately felt welcomed. Until you told me that I had overstepped my bounds. You were rude to me.

    I cried.

Here’s what you don’t know about me. I don’t cry. The last time I cried was in 2004 when my little brother died of pancreatic cancer. The last time I cried before that was in 1993, when my nephew died. He had survived cancer, was in a car accident, was in a coma, and then died six weeks later. He wa seventeen.

I haven’t cried throughout this ordeal with my sons. Not when they were arrested. Not when they were sent to rehab as part of their probation. Not when they have been stoned and called me every name in the book. Not when we went to court and petitioned for a restraining order. Not when they told me that I was no longer their mother.

Nor did I cry yesterday during the emails that I sent to our drug agency at the sheriff’s office where I turned my sons in for being drug dealers.

But you made me cry. I was in St George at the time, visiting my sons. I was shocked and hurt. I would have quit the blog then and there had it not been for Melanie. She stood up for me, and so did others. It took me a long time to feel safe.

Rio, life is so hard. This blog MUST be a place of safety. For the record, I am not a baseball fan. I don’t need to hear the score of every Rockies game. I don’t. But I know it’s important to you, so I hold my peace. I respect you.

Remember, this is Chet’s blog. Not Rio’s blog. We don’t have rules. If we want to post one word or one hundred, who cares? And why does it matter to you? I love the days when we have lots of postings. I love going to the dark side.

If you are hurting, tell us you are having a bad day. But don’t take it out on us.
Especially the newcomers. DEFINATELY not the newcomers. They don’t deserve it. Actually, none of us do.

I’d like to share a story with you. Last winter, I was going through hell with my sons. Christmas was coming and I needed to do something to make the holidays fun. Quite frankly, I needed some oooohs and ahhhhhhhs. And who did I turn to? The Plunderers. And you didn’t let me down. I had a need to give and a need to feel appreciated and a need to make some toffee. Honestly, sending out the toffee was the best part of Christmas for me. You came through. You met that need. You were awesome. Thank you so much,

You know, sometimes our families let us down. I recently made my niece a very cute diaper bag and filled it with baby clothes and clothes for her two year old. That was back in February. I still haven’t heard back from her. And yes, my feelings are hurt.

But the Plunderers loved my toffee and told me so. That is what is so wonderful about us – we support each other.

So we must, at all costs, keep this site sacred. We must be kind and loving and positive and honest.

Rio, please, please, don’t quit the blog. But please recognize that many of us are fragile and meanness has no place here.

    Mary

Wolfie/Mary: You are kindness itself and deserve nothing but warmth and kindness in return. Hopefully your boys will come to realize that. (And you make the best toffee I’ve ever tasted!)

B&M: I also thought the comment was directed against Natasha who came back with a vise and vonderfully sassy reply. You are one of the smartest people I know and please never think otherwise. (I’ve been having fun with “nitpicker” by the way and wrote about it today on my blog.)

  20. Kirby T. Penworthy
    11:38 am on April 8th, 2011

Mary: You’re right. I try to make allowances for Rio because he’s just a grumpy kind of guy, but he has hurt my feelings on more than one occasion. But then he says something funny or inspirational and all is forgiven. I just wish there were more of the latter and less of the former.

Barb: I’m truly sorry I read the post wrong the other day. I thought he was “dissing” Natasha, and since Natasha is kind of a mystery element, it didn’t bother me. I think you bring a lot to the blog!

  21. Barb & Maggie
    12:12 pm on April 8th, 2011

One more Natasha vs. Barb comment then we are finished with that topic. It’s ok to say we are different, because we are. Natasha is far more imaginative and funny than Barb. Barb could not write Natasha’s reports (even if they are slightly off base). We love the diversity. But to imply that one is less than, that is something that we find offensive. Both elements add to the blog. OK, finished!

Thank you for the support everyone, and Bee, coming from a college professor, that was quite a compliment! Barb is going to be feeling good all day. And she will try not to nitpick!

Did anyone see Hop? Big box office success this week, and very cute. Worth watching, even without the kiddies.

Our Decorah eagles made the Today show this morning! They are famous.

Funny story about the eagle cam – Barb’s s-i-l Chad, (who is quite intelligent), said to Kelly “Those look just like Bald Eagles”. She said, “They are Bald Eagles”. So he said “Then why are they calling them Decorah Eagles?”

We have a Facebook friend who updates on Patrick every day for quite awhile now. There is a facebook page for “The Patrick Miracle”. He has been improving but still only weighs 20 lbs. His owner has been found and charged.
The latest we read says that “Some groups and out-of-state shelters are cashing in by using Patrick’s image to lead donors to believe their contributions will go toward the rescued pit bull” so be careful.
This friend is always posting horrible stories about abused and neglected dogs. Thats too much for us to comprehend. Mom says she can only make sure that all dogs in her care are happy and healthy, but we wish we could somehow help all those that are sad and unhealthy and scared.

This morning’s post reminded us of another NBC Chicago News story about dog abuse this week. Some woman, in her 50s threw her dog out her moving car window, and then tried to run it over. The dog was several years old, and was a cute little cocker spaniel type. She got a little bitty fine and a misdemeanor charge against her. The dog survived and is up for adoption.

I haven’t seen Hop yet but plan to. It looks cute. (I still want to see Jane Eyre but it isn’t around here yet.)

After running errands I walked around one of the lakes and came upon one of the Canada geese sitting on a nest. I didn’t see her until she hissed at me. She was very big and the nest was made of loose twigs on the ground. It was off the path and in some brush. First time I’ve seen one. I’m going to try to keep checking on the nest. Did anyone know that Canada geese have red tongues?

B.Stover – Our Dad was a Park Ranger for many years and had to deal with herds of Canada geese (we know they are flocks, but we ARE Corgis, so herding just comes naturally). He had to shoo them off fields, off the playgrounds – here’s a visual, Canada geese on a seesaw – yup it really happened – and out of picnic sites when city folks were intimidated by the “giant bird” that they thought might be an eagle. (Really….Park Rangers do see it all)
But with all his experience, even HE didn’t know that they had red tongues. Now, he wants to go back to the park and see if he can get a hiss out of one of them.

    7:58 pm on April 8th, 2011

From what I can make out you guys are having trouble distinguishing between a character on a blog and reality. That’s the best I can get out of a certain Pug here who is very upset with many of you.

Now Bear, whom many (the same many from up above) of you so righteously stood up for, is okay with everything, and asking for Rio to come back to the blog. So, as far as I can see if you had stayed out of it everything would be okay. It was between those two and nobody else.

Rio wants to come back to the blog only to be able to talk to his friends. And after last night and today, he knows exactly who those guys are. He will be back on a limited basis though, because he thinks he has given his heart and soul to this blog only to find out many of you despise him. So be it. He is not an easy dog to live, but I still love him and if he wants to go back to that environment, I will let him.

Dawson please, do not be heart broken. Rio would never ever wish that upon you or anyone on Chet’s Blog. Believe me, I know.

Rio will be outrageously mad at Pepper for something stupid, like squeaking a toy non-stop, and start barking madly and intensely in Pepper’s face. Well, Pepper just looks at Rio and lifts one of her big ole dusty paws and pushes down on Rio’s head. He either goes down on the ground under the weight or gets away. It’s serious fun. I hope to video it one day. Maybe you guys should take a lesson from Pepper. Just Paw-Down if he gets out of control. That’s my advice anyway.

I am inclined not to get into the fight on the blog. I know fights like this can ruin blogs and it makes me very sad to see people unhappy with each other on the blog. It is different from any other group I have ever been on.

We do things together. Quilts and Snowhook are two examples. I have only been on one other group this diverse that did things together.

I hope we can all be nice to each other and understand that the blog is important to each one of us in a way that we probably can’t even start to understand.

It is not that we don’t have real friends. It is not that we all agree on anything except that dogs rule (although those kats don’t believe it). Somehow this blog just seems to touch a chord in each of us. I would like for us all to try to be more understanding of the other dog or cats point of view. Play nice with each other.

I love you all. And Dawson, you honorary nitwit, you have to stay on the blog. This is how we keep in touch!

So if you are tempted to take sides or say something hurtful to another one on the blog think about this first. Would I say this to my dog??? If you would then go ahead.

    Love you guys

    Please.

We have forty-two dogs with our most recent addition of Zebbe. In the kennel you’ll find clowns who never have a bad day, two who can be best be described as their brother’s keeper, a tender-hearted infamous wanderer. We have a rescue that ranks low on any totem pole, lower than pups. We have the tough guy that could hold his own in any prison yard who secretly is a love and beyond loyal. There is the matriarch—no one messes with mama. Some need protecting and others are the protector. Dogs who are still figuring out what it means to be them, and dogs that need a little extra love when their mates aren’t looking.

Do they always get along? No, not always. Different as they might be each with their own personalities, likes and dislikes, friends and preferred running mates, they have core elements in common. They are loved, treasured, make Snowhook, Snowhook, and exist within a bond difficult to describe.

I consider myself very much a newbie on Chet’s blog, the community so tight knit and also existing within a bond difficult to describe, but ask two things of you: 1) remember that two dogs, sworn enemies in the morning having fought over a bone, can often be found snuggled next to each other napping in the afternoon, and 2) your forgiveness if I’m overstepping any bounds.

Wow. We seemed to have gone from total harmony arising from Rio’s wonderful recounting of the story of the Plunderers to total disharmony in a blink of an eye. How could that possibly have happened? I wish I knew. There are a couple of truths I do know. First, that every relationship, whether marital, fraternal or familial (like what we have here on this wonderful blog) is extraordinarily fragile and requires hard work to make it work every day. Anything less, and it can so easily disintegrate. Second, irrespective of anything else, Rio has the biggest heart of anyone on the blog, and while that can be a blessing at times, it can also be an overwhelming burden to bear as well. At bottom, I am a rather simple creature who simply loves to greet each new day as a great adventure, with smells to be smelled, butts to be sniffed, and tails to be wagged. I love my mom and dad and grandpa and everyone on the blog. We just need to find a way to put it back together again. Wookie

Whoa, guys, I have no idea how that post got here. That home office is very clever, no? I’m glad we got that water supply straightened out. This was a most distressful day. I am glad it’s almost over.

Rebecca, you are very wise. Thank you for your input. Tell us….is the matriarch Luna?

Mom just sent me an email that she is looking at Mt Shasta right this very second. She says that it is amazing, so white and majestic! Her and Dad are on their way to Whidbey Island, and all us get to stay home with our favorite petsitter, Carol.

We’re a bit confused. Rio wants to come back but only to talk to SiberH and Wookie. We all take his grumpiness and today, perhaps, let feelings be known that have previously been tucked away. We didn’t hear ANYONE say that they didn’t love Rio and think he is an important part of the plunderers. But now he wants to punish those who spoke up by excluding them from his parts of the conversation. We weren’t going to post our feelings but maybe we should. He has made Mom cry too. She is often too sensitive so thought that perhaps she was overacting. Mostly, he has made her (and us by extension) feel unimportant. When she made the map, he posted “What are we supposed to do with this?” It was just something we thought would be of interest to everyone.

Reading Mary’s and Barb’s posts today made us realize that sometimes Mom isn’t overacting. Rio certainly has no qualms about telling us how he feels, so he should allow us the same right. Again NO ONE said they didn’t like Rio, didn’t appreciate his originality and his compassion when one of us needs support and all of this during one’s of his friend’s toughest years. But sometimes his posting has become hurtful and mean. It makes us cringe when he lashes out at a newcomer. We aren’t all writers or scholars or poets. But we ALL matter.

Rio, we hope you don’t quit or exclude us from your postings. If you chose to do so, we’re sorry that you make that decision. But you will miss your friends and family here and we will miss you. Families, even cyber families, argue and hurt each other. But in the long run, we’re family. We all forgive and plunder on.

Of course, after today, Chet may shut this thing down!

Exhausted! Yesterday Mom traveled to the east side of the mitten and had a long, long, long, day. She got home at 8:30p and was in bed by 9 and asleep by 9:30 so we missed the dinner. Mom drank a protein shake and went to sleep. She won’t tell me what’s going on at her busy place, she just shakes her head, mumbles something that sounds like “shenanigans,” then she says, “Stupid, stupid, stupid people.” I don’t mention too much after that.

Mom finished the newest C.J. Box–Cold Wind. Murder mystery involving those big ass wind turbines. You ever seen one of those? Monster huge! Mom’s also finished up the latest J.D. Robb–Treachery in Death, and is working on the latest Patterson–she has forgotten the title and is refusing to get up to go in the bedroom to look at the front of the book.

She’s watching the NASCAR race on ESPN right now, and thinking about turning it all off and going to read instead. Me? I’ve been quietly napping on her lap and the arm of her chair. What a life for a rescue poodle. It doesn’t get any better than this!

Jasper – Mama is always looking for new mystery writers to read. The one about the wind turbine sounds interesting, but we confess, Mama is kind of a wuss – she has a hard time with graphic violence or really super tense nail biters. People like JA Jance are undoubtably good writers, but Mama has yet to be able to finish one of her books.

Wow! What can I say? I’m relatively new to the blog and I don’t know all of you as well as I’d like to. Not meaning to sound like Pollyanna, I have to say I like everybody, I’ve met on the blog. Yes, I felt intimidated early on, when I got a few barbs sent my way, but sticking with it and getting to know everyone better, I felt that none of the “hard stuff” was really hard. There was always someone to support me when I needed it. I truly feel that there is a rapport here that is worth sustaining.
I hope I don’t upset you Rio, by saying that I think you are sometimes gruff and that you can be abrasive, but I think it’s all in an attempt to live up to your “Evil Pug” image. Underneath you’re a kind, caring, intelligent, kind of guy that sometimes thinks he has to come on tough. At times we accept your fire and at other times we have a day when we’re a bit more sensitive than usual and take offense at what’s said.
Each of us is entitled to a bad day now and then. Fortunately we don’t all have them at the same time. This week, however, I think there were too many bad days at the same time and the results weren’t pleasant.
I sincerely hope that the wounds heal and that everyone survives. I would hate to see anybody leave the group.
I had an email from a friend today that said, “No matter how good a friend is, he’s going to hurt you from time to time, and you have to forgive him for that.” We are all friends and should remember that.

    Oh dear, Rio,
I am sorry your team lost tonight. For once this season, well really twice the Twins won. Hopefully they will keep on winning for a while. I am tired of being in the cellar.

Barb I should have told you that my little tiny tomato plants were up the end of last week and now they are growing like mad. I only planted the mortgage lifter and the purple cherokee’s.
I am also going to get a couple of Early Girl plants from Gurneys because they are only 52 days!!!

I also learned, finally, the difference between determinate and indeterminate tomatoes. Thanks to the Gurney’s catalog I now know that determinate tomatoes ripen all at once. Indeterminate ones ripen all year long.

See you all tomorrow. And, as Scarlett says. “Tomorrow is another day”

    Good night all.

Folks and furry folks, you won’t hear from me today.

NYC! Leaving in just a few minutes. I spent a great deal of yesterday sewing pockets back in my vest. Zoë had left treats in them. I was able to save one pocket.

I’m taking treats to YSAS. We’re going to “stoop sit” and Chinatown and the park if there’s time.

I won’t be back until VERY late! I hear tour buses are good to sleep in.

    Love you all. . .
