Quite an early post for Chet. We love this photo. It has changed the life of the photographer also.
Going to be a busy day today with the family. All us girls and sister-in-law (E) are going to IKEA. Dawson has never been.
8:56 am on August 9th, 2012
Good Morning Staff!
I love this picture! The story makes my eyes blurry.
Greetings to All Plunderers, near and far!
9:16 am on August 9th, 2012
Good morning Rose. It is very nice here in Minnesota. A little breeze and sun, but temps in the 60’s so far. Great day.
9:27 am on August 9th, 2012
We are wishing for days like that here in NY. It is a bad hair day….hot, humid, and sticky. Yuck!
9:30 am on August 9th, 2012
T&G: The small details….
Will you be at the fair with your mum and dad?
This is a doable drive for the Prof and I, and we would both be honored to meet the Royal Family.
What are the start and end dates of the fair?
I’m very excited!
9:36 am on August 9th, 2012
The photo and story were on Facebook.
Good morning all.
9:40 am on August 9th, 2012
Morning All!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DIMA! ( a little late)
Wose, understand the bad hair day. My hair is in braids today. Hope you and the Prof can meet the Golinka and Storyteller.
I love that story. Makes me tear up.
9:46 am on August 9th, 2012
Story!…Didn’t we read that story yesterday….grump!
10:03 am on August 9th, 2012
Good morning all!
Rose – REALLY??? Maybe you could come to the Fair?? Oh, Mama is twirling with that idea!
Details – the Fair is August 21-26, 10 am to 10 pm. Mama will have a booth in the exhibition building. But the Fair has rules about member of the NAtion Within. We are not allowed. Period. Oh sure, you can have sheep and cows and rabbits and ducks and chicken and horses, but loyal, gentle, happy dogs are forbidden. grrrrrrrr.
Hope the Gang of Sisters has a good time at IKEA – that store will never be the same.
And now off to the laying under the work table – someone has to supervise, and if we can do that job, it takes some of the pressure off Mama. Aren’t we GOOD Doggies!?
10:10 am on August 9th, 2012
T&G, that Fair place isn’t fair at all!
10:12 am on August 9th, 2012
Rose!…Just how far can you and the Prof travel anyways?…grunt!
10:15 am on August 9th, 2012
Sammie!…heh!snort!heh!….good one…chorkel!
10:18 am on August 9th, 2012
Good morning all. That is a fantastic picture, and the amazing thing is that Schoep is 19 years old! Not too many doogies make it that far. You can see that John has a real bond with him.
We got a little rain yesterday, but not nearly enough. Hoping for more today, but no damaging wind, please.
Back to work. BBL
10:32 am on August 9th, 2012
That is a beautiful photo. sniff
Rose! GO!!!
High of 95 here today…no rain. It has to be 96 degrees or above before mom considers it hot. She is not sane.
10:39 am on August 9th, 2012
Fair!…I wanna go to the Fair…sniff!…It looks pretty amazing from the website…grunt!
10:44 am on August 9th, 2012
T&G, yes, the Prof and I are making plans to visit. I can’t wait to meet your mum and dad, but grrrrrrrrr, I’m not happy that you will not be there.
And, Sammie, yes, that was a good one!!!
Rio! We have traveled as far as Boston and Philadelphia by car. By plane we have traveled to Chicago and Puerto Rico. The Prof has been to Utah and Florida by himself for school conferences.
Dutchess County is about an hour’s drive from where we live.
There may be the possibility that I will be traveling somewhere very cold next February……
10:49 am on August 9th, 2012
Gus&BooBear:
The first short story I downloaded was the one by Lee Child.
The second short story I downloaded was about the 1924 British Expedition to Mt. Everest. It is fiction, but based on true events during that expedition. It turns into a not too scary horror story.
We liked both stories very much and they were good practice for “A Cat Was Involved”.
Melanie, Mom says to tell Zoe that when reading on the Kindle One Touch you cannot swipe a dog hair off the screen. It has to be blown off.
10:59 am on August 9th, 2012
Kindle!…Try getting Pug slobbers off of it…heh!heh!…Or Beau’s snot…snort!
11:01 am on August 9th, 2012
Rose!…Somewhere very cold!??…wheeze!…Are you coming here!here!here!?…snort!
11:08 am on August 9th, 2012
I realty liked the first Reacher story, the second story, notso much.
Love the photo.
11:11 am on August 9th, 2012
Laughing here Siber-H, I will make sure to tell her.
The Awesome Dawson in IKEA. The mind boggles.
11:12 am on August 9th, 2012
sniff, Rose won’t be coming to see me.
This was brought up yesterday and mom found the answer in the Kindel Users Guide. Yes, the battery will last longer if you keep the WI-FI turned off except when you are using it.
11:41 am on August 9th, 2012
Rio: Do you like the Kindle?
I think Rose may be going to Alaska.
Meeting a friend for lunch.
11:42 am on August 9th, 2012
IKEA!… I can see Dawson bumping into something and the whole store collapsing…snort!
11:45 am on August 9th, 2012
Stover!…We have not had too much time to play with the Kindle…sniff!…She was trying to look through a crockpot cookbook she ordered and it was frustrating going one page at a time through each recipe…grunt!…We need to improve our “Search” skills or something…snuffle!
12:02 pm on August 9th, 2012
Rio, I haven’t got the search features figured out either.
12:59 pm on August 9th, 2012
Nook!…Beau still hasn’t figured out how to get his little Nook gift card loaded…heh!…He keeps trying to swipe it against the side of the device…snort!
1:33 pm on August 9th, 2012
SiberH, I would love to come and see you!
Nothing definite yet, but I think B may be right….
Rio, do I have an open invitation?
1:37 pm on August 9th, 2012
Rio, which Nook does Beau have? I posted instructions a couple of nights ago for the color Nook, which I have, but it should be pretty much the same.
1:43 pm on August 9th, 2012
Lunchbreak is coming along with a thunderstorm, so we can’t stay online. But we have to say WOOOOO HOOOOOO – Mama is gonna get to meet Rose!!! Twirling, twirling, twirling……DUCK….thunderclaps! Yikes….later, gators
2:07 pm on August 9th, 2012
Invitation!…Open invitation to what?…grunt!…I’m not sure what kind of Nook Beau has. I think it is first generation – whatever that means…sniff!
2:09 pm on August 9th, 2012
Wolfie, Blasphemy!!! SiberH, both short stories are excellent. The one just released where Reacher is in the Army is interesting because there isn’t alot of typical Reacher being super tough, but more the thinking and figuring out the bad guy. Like Wolfie, we really like the story of Reacher and his brother as youngsters. Siber, be sure and get both stories. Both can be read in one sitting.
2:19 pm on August 9th, 2012
Okay, I need to reread the second Reacher story. I read it late at night, and it didn’t seem to have a definite ending. I trust you guys.
I am also reading The Reader. So far, it’s very good. Mom likes it too.
2:20 pm on August 9th, 2012
Oh Dog, Gus&BooBear
I did not know there were two Jack Reacher short stories. Thanks, I will get the second one.
2:27 pm on August 9th, 2012
Thunderstorms down the hills? I thought I heard thunder when I was in the pool but figured it was the trucks making noise on the highway.
Need to look at the radar!
2:29 pm on August 9th, 2012
Wow, they have a honker of a storm down there. Sunny skies for the moment up here!
Can’t wait to hear what happened in IKEA.
2:41 pm on August 9th, 2012
On the Kindle Fire, when you first turn it on, at the bottom there are symbols. The one that looks like a page with lines will take you to a choice of going to the cover, table of contents, beginning, location…, sync to furthest page. If you have something like that Rio, you may be able to find things in the cookbook more easily.
Also, regarding searching: At the home page there is a search box. Tap it and the keyboard appears. You can find specific locations of words in a text, or, if you are on the web, you can search just as you do on the computer. You can also go to the app store.
You can make notes by holding your finger on a word. My Kindles first and second generations had built-in dictionaries but I haven’t found that on the Kindle Fire yet.
2:46 pm on August 9th, 2012
We had heavy rain and thunderstorms this morning. Now we have what I consider an English rain: a light misting.
2:51 pm on August 9th, 2012
I just went to the Amazon site and looked on the Kindle Fire support page for looking up words in the dictionary. It’s easy: tap the word and a short definition appears. You can also tap on full definition in the box and get the longer version. Excellent!
2:56 pm on August 9th, 2012
Rio, do I have an open invitation to come visit you anytime? Maybe someday I can talk the Prof into a trip to your great state.
Beau, I have a first geneartion Nook. I’ll let you know how to load your gift card when I get home.
T&G, I’m twirling here too! Can’t wait to meet your mum and dad!
2:56 pm on August 9th, 2012
Wose! Please check your SDD. I’ve got my sparkly, pink collar ready and have plans drafted to kick my two legged and the Bearded One out of my bed if, nay, when you come north to Alaska. I share my big bed with them all year round. Surely, they can share Tenzing’s pillow for a few nights.
2:59 pm on August 9th, 2012
Belle Starr: Will do!
SiberH, look at you uploaded books onto your Kindle! TechnoSibe has arrived!!!!!! 🙂
2:59 pm on August 9th, 2012
Ahem…Belle Starr’s ‘bed’ that she is kind enough to share with us is actually our bed. Rose, mi spare room es su spare room.
3:07 pm on August 9th, 2012
Sadie, my misdiagnosed “lab” who hates water, fell into the lake trying to take a drink this morning. We had been walking 90 minutes and she and Lady had been chasing ravens and geese. She struggled a bit but I walked the shore calling her name and she found her way out. I’m kind of afraid of water myself so I understand. Lady, the sled dog, loves swimming and jumps in at every opportunity. Last winter she fell through the ice and I went towards her on instinct until the ice started cracking under my feet. Fortunately, I just kept encouraging her and she was able to get out.
Weather is lovely today–it was awful yesterday so I didn’t make it to the fair. I am leaving today in 5 minutes. BBL
3:40 pm on August 9th, 2012
Rose!..If you ever came to visit here we would need at least a month to get ready…grunt! …What with all the cleaning and grocery shopping and us getting baths…sniff!…Maybe you better give us 2 months warning…grunt!
4:07 pm on August 9th, 2012
Wose: If you ever visit Rio without advance notice, it is best not to be disguised as a car or bunny. It doesn’t matter how many slim Jim’s you have in your sparkly pink backpack, he will bark at you. My four- legged mama and I learned the hard way.
4:09 pm on August 9th, 2012
Cat! Not car. Either way, it is best to arrive as yourself with your CTD ID.
4:09 pm on August 9th, 2012
Yeep!..CHobbit you sure have a lot of close-calls living out there in the Alaskan Wilds…wheeze!…You better pack up and come live with one of the Plunderers down here where its safe…sniff!…Just watch out for all the fires in Montana and Idaho on your way down…grunt!
4:40 pm on August 9th, 2012
Visitors!…And never come during baseball season…grunt!
4:50 pm on August 9th, 2012
Barb says she feels like a manby pamby after listening to CHobbit’s stories. We get scared of the Illinois winters out here by ourselves. Babies that’s what we are!
The title company decided they needed yet another document today, so we were gone for a couple of hours getting what they needed. Almost over!
T & G, your mama is very lucky to get to meet all these Plunderers. She will hold the record for meeting the most, I am sure. That woman gets around!
Bee, Were you kidding when you said “Who is Randy Travis?”
4:54 pm on August 9th, 2012
B&M: I was just think about you and wondering how closing was progressing. It will be over soon.
CHH is tough as nails. I have suspected all along.
5:06 pm on August 9th, 2012
Barb!…Did you see the photo of Randy Travis on the news last night…snort!…Thats not the guy I remember. He was all beat-up and narly looking…sniff!…What happened to that guy anyways?
5:18 pm on August 9th, 2012
Dog lovers often adopt dogs to do something for them. Companionship, alert to strangers. Whatever.
But soon the tables are turned and you spend your life doing whatever you can FOR you dog. And more so the older they get. You go from enjoying their puppyhood and taking their presence for granted to indulging them. The older they get, the more you realize their time on this earth is way too short. You want to make sure they have the best life possible in the time they have left. So you’ll play squeaky or throw that ball as long as they ask you, because it is the least you can do for them. Such a small request to make them happy.
John Unger understand this. It is awesome he has been loved by his dog Schoep for 19 years. I would do anything for my dog too.
5:18 pm on August 9th, 2012
Barb: I wasn’t kidding about asking who Randy Travis is. Sorry….
5:49 pm on August 9th, 2012
Rio, I may have my C.W. singers mixed up, but isn’t Randy Travis the one that was married to an older woman for years and years and lived in Hawaii? I think they got divorced a couple of years ago. Maybe he needed someone to keep him on the straight and narrow.
Bee, We need to get you out more!
5:56 pm on August 9th, 2012
Barb: In this case the problem may be that I don’t like country western music.
6:45 pm on August 9th, 2012
Bee, You mean you don’t put on your s**t kickers and go out two-steppin?
7:00 pm on August 9th, 2012
Kickin’!….Speaking of kickin’…snort!…Tonight is the first Broncos game with Payton Manning…heh!heh!…We shall see, we shall see…sniff!
7:06 pm on August 9th, 2012
Barb: Never!
7:13 pm on August 9th, 2012
Staff: Isn’t today’s story the same link you posted the other day? Well, it’s a good one and we don’t mind reading it twice.
Mlaiuppa: You said it. The Nation Within deserves the very Best. Interesting name…what is the origin?
C.Hobbit-Harris: Dad saw a video demonstration last winter showing how our kind use our dew claws (the fifth claw) to climb out after falling through the ice. It was advised not to remove them like some owners do – trim only – they do have a purpose.
7:40 pm on August 9th, 2012
Trigger, A lot of puppies of my breed (English Shepherd) have hind dew claws. Normally those are removed but not the front ones. What is the purpose of the hind ones?
7:43 pm on August 9th, 2012
Melanie, Forgot to mention, we are baking some chicken breast tonight, using this bar-b-que sauce we just received. It is gluten free, and was rated #1 in the country. We got a jar from Barb’s bro in Raleigh, N.C. where it is made. It is called Bone Suckin’ Sauce. Will let you know if it is really that good.
7:45 pm on August 9th, 2012
Hi Mlaiuppa! Our dogs have us well trained here. We’d do anything for them. And quite frequently do so.
Cracking ice. Not good. Seems every year some one around here falls through. Our neighbor’s dog fell through once and couldn’t get out. “G” went on his belly across the ice and pulled his dog free. Whew.
No rain yet.
14.5 hours until Zoe and I get some time away!!!!!!!!!!!!!
8:38 pm on August 9th, 2012
Time for me to check into bed.
Rereading Louise Penny’s series. Very good. Can’t wait for the 14th though. I wonder if I can slow down to one word for every 10 seconds to make AKWI last longer.
TTFN
8:59 pm on August 9th, 2012
Barb & Maggie: The front dewclaws are our “Dog’s Thumbs” – no opposable thumbs darn it, but nifty for holding our bones. In many countries it is illegal to remove them. Not all breeds have the rear dewclaws. For some dogs where the dewclaw touches the ground it can be an aid in running. In some, such as the Great Pyrenees, removal is detrimental to the breed.
9:01 pm on August 9th, 2012
We are saying good night right behind Melanie. TTFN
9:11 pm on August 9th, 2012
Home!…From our walk and we missed the first half hour of the football game…grunt!…Someone here is worried she missed seeing Payton play for the first time as a Bronco…grump!…Its advertising – we hate that about watching football games. Too much advertising time compared to baseball games…sniff!
HOT!…Because we went earlier it was hotter out than usual…gasp!wheeze!sneeze! …Peyton better be worth it, if we even get to see him play…grump!…Damned walk.
9:54 pm on August 9th, 2012
Turning in for the night. Looking again at the beautiful picture of John and Schoep in Lake Superior. Two Dear Friends enjoying each other’s company.
The family returns tomorrow!
Sweet dreams – Bear
10:20 pm on August 9th, 2012
Missing!…Where is everybody tonight…grunt!…One would think it was a Friday night or sumthing…sniff!…Well, we missed out on Mannings short little excursion onto the field tonight…gruffle!…So back to the Olympics for now…heh!
10:22 pm on August 9th, 2012
Bear!…What? Did they leave Bear Home Alone?…heh!…I bet he cleaned out the fridgerator and the freezer while they were gone…snort!
11:03 pm on August 9th, 2012
I think Bear’s assignment was to guard the house and I am sure he ate very well.
Everytime I look at the photo of Unger and his dog, I sniff.
night Rio and everyone
11:56 pm on August 9th, 2012
Well we had a great time at IKEA. Dawson was worried that we would take her into a large busy place (Which she doesn’t like) and she wouldn’t buy anything. What a fear.
She managed to buy a few things and even bought a few extra IKEA bags for her spouse. She thinks he will like them lots.
I had to take a nap after the store. Whew that place is exhausting!
11:58 pm on August 9th, 2012
It was 108 at 6:30 this evening. Macy will not be leaving the cool bathroom floor until the temperature reaches 80.
–Macy’s administrative assistant
12:01 am on August 10th, 2012
Dawson showed us her prize today. We are in awe. Looks even more amazing in person!

Elliot the massage kat is making A Catty Librarian very happy right now. You should hear the sounds he makes her utter. Snicker.
2:07 am on August 10th, 2012
The sisters three and the quilt are beautiful!
Wose is going to meet Golinka and Leonard, the Storyteller not the dog. She is in for a treat. They are two of my favorite people in this whole wide world.
Down from the roof. Night all!
8:23 am on August 10th, 2012
Rio! I forgot….The Prof and I have traveled to Washington, DC, Niagara Falls, and Toronto by car as well.
The three sisters and the quilt are gorgeous!
