Here’s To Gina
“Hmm,” says Bernie. He’s reading the paper. Sometimes humans say hmm. What does it mean? I’m not sure. Humans – this is just a guess on my part – can get very wrapped up in their own minds sometimes.
“Seems there’s this German shepherd named Gina,” he goes on. “She went to Iraq as a bomb-sniffer, witnessed a lot of hairy stuff including bomb explosions and flash-bang grenades going off, and came back with what the vet is calling post-traumatic stress disorder. Other vets don’t like that diagnosis because – whoa! – they think it demeans service men and women.” He turns the page. “Don’t get that at all. But the good news is Gina’s now going on long walks with friendly people and she’s doing much better.”
Walks? Something about walks?
“What are you barking about, big guy?”
I go over, give him a nudge.
Hat tip to Melanie

I was getting worried about you Chet, Bernie, Spence, Admin. I certainly hope that Gina does not have to go back to Iraq. Yes, hat tip to Melanie.
5:47 am on August 3rd, 2010
Wow, Melanie got a hat tip!
I just suckered Staff. I came in and spoke very loudly to her and she thought I wanted a lap. So with great effort she moved from the office chair to the rocker and had staff bring the little table in from the spare bedroom so she would have room for all her things. Got a pillow. Water.
Once she was settled I jumped into the office chair. (Love that office chair) It twirled around about 6 times before it stopped and I had to hold on tight, but I am happy now.

Hey Mr Husky, there is a whole list of AL-Can highway sites both east and west! Huh, I thought it was north and south myself. This link came in my ISP's monthly newsletter. Dog Friendly sites all over the world.
What about the CATS!!!!

Hat Tip!?…. Hey! What did I miss? Why does Melanie get a Hat Tip?….snort!
6:00 am on August 3rd, 2010
Tee-Hee! snicker!
6:02 am on August 3rd, 2010
Melanie, did you get the hat tip because of your very powerful comment yesterday about the editorial?
6:16 am on August 3rd, 2010
HatTip!…. Maybe she got it for all the tons of poop she is always cleaning up… heh!
6:20 am on August 3rd, 2010
Maybe she send Spence the info about Gina. I always think the hat tips are related to the post.

Joke!…A man was driving down the road and ran out of gas. Just at that moment, a bee flew in his window.
The bee said, 'What seems to be the problem?'
'I'm out of gas,' the man replied.
The bee told the man to wait right there and flew away. Minutes later, the man watched as an entire swarm of bees flew to his car and into his gas tank. After a few minutes, the bees flew out.
'Try it now,' said one bee.
The man turned the ignition key and the car started right up. 'Wow!' the man exclaimed, 'what did you put in my gas tank'?
The bee answered,
“BP”…. snort!
6:37 am on August 3rd, 2010
The alternative fuel. Perhaps they should try it instead of drilling wells.
6:50 am on August 3rd, 2010
Love the joke Riö, wish it were true.
I found Gina on many of the websites I visit in the morning. By the way, for those of us in the Northeast, not sure about upper Midwest, there is a chance of the Northern Lights tonight and tomorrow. Best viewing? The Cape and Western Hills!
YIPPEE! Hope Chet gets a good view. Usually when something stupendous is happening here, at night in the heavens, it clouds up.
I've always wanted to see them. Dan decided to marry Zoë when they were on a walk in Chicago (many years ago) and the Northern Lights were shining above Lake Michigan.
6:55 am on August 3rd, 2010
So!… It was Melanie who stopped Chet from continuing with the Col. Bob Blog mystery. Drat it all!…grunt!
7:07 am on August 3rd, 2010
LOL…sorry Melanie but I was thinking the same thing Rio included in his ll:55AM post.
7:17 am on August 3rd, 2010
Now you don't ACTUALLY know he would have continued with CB and all . .
And isn't Gina worth it?
Did you google her? She is an awesome dog.
Dan has decided he's coming home Friday. This is not true as of right now.
This is going to be interesting.

Gina!… I already heard about Gina The Traumatized… snort!… I wanted to find out what was so Funny about Tulips motel room… grunt!

Chet (or Spence) has enough distractions as it is.
7:33 am on August 3rd, 2010
Concentrate! ….I second that! Quit distracting Chet!… grunt!… We will never find out about Astrid at this rate for gosh sakes….grumble.
Melanie!… If you want to do something constructive….snort!… Throw up a few puppy pictures… sniff!…Then I might forgive you, maybe….cough!

Dan: Speaking from experience. Do not go home too early from Rehab. The chances of you having to go back into rehab go way up if you leave too early. Make sure you are ready and listen to the input from your rehab professionals. Do they do a home visit first? By the way, your on-line book is keeping me from getting my chores done.
Gina: Gina should not be sent for another tour in Iraq. She should be allowed to live a normal happy dog's life.
Colonel Bob? Astrid?: I've forgotten who they are. Vague memories.
Audio THAT: Thought I'd order audio Thereby Hangs a Tail to improve my reading style for the inmates when TFAT comes out. $90+! What's up with that? Are they socking it to the blind? And they don't even have Dog On It in audio, dagnabit.
7:47 am on August 3rd, 2010

That should be a question mark. Sorry, things are a bit weird right now.

Wolfie: What a handsome guy you are. I like the 3rd picture down best. I hope Gina does not go back to Iraq. The dogs over there are so brave and intelligent. I hate it when I read that one of them has been killed.

Dawson: Here is the address for the audio cd of DOI from amazon. It's $23. I have both on audio.
Melanie: Love the puppy.

Melanie!… You are completely forgiven….sniff!… What a smart looking little guy!…grunt!… He would make an excellent Quilt Square, don’t you think??…sneeze!

Dawson: I have a message to you with addresses for both books on cd but it is awaiting moderation.
8:07 am on August 3rd, 2010
Thanks B. Stover: I will wait patiently.
Melanie: I love the picture of the big puppy. I will cry too when you give them up, though I know they all go to great homes.
8:20 am on August 3rd, 2010
Dawson: Just go to amazon.com and click on "books" rather than "all departments." The type in Spencer Quinn and go to DOI and THAT. They will show audio cd as one of the editions. Click on it and order (you have to set up an account if you don't already have one).
8:33 am on August 3rd, 2010
Cute, cute, cute, Melanie. I guess they will leaving for their forever homes in a few days. Did they all go through their cardio testing?
8:42 am on August 3rd, 2010
Peeople can be so dumb! How can they say it is demeaning to say Gina suffers from PTSD? She was doing a dangerous job to help save human lives, and she did her job well. Hope she gets to stay here and do something less dangerous when she recovers.
9:35 am on August 3rd, 2010
Yikes!…. Here is what the Village Voice is reporting…sniff!
The AP is reporting that 9 people have died in a shooting at Hartford Distributors, a Manchester, Connecticut, beer distribution warehouse, this morning. According to a company executive, a warehouse driver was asked to resign, refused, and then opened fire. The New York Times confirms that at least 8 are dead, among them the suspected shooter, identified as Omar Thornton, who may have turned the gun on himself.
Grunt!…Talk about crazy people!

Pups go Thursday for the heart check ups. Dan has sort of "misled" the professionals at the rehab place. They told him he could go home Monday. He told them all the pups would be gone by then and he had to see them. AND there were only around 6 stairs he had to go up and down.
Actually some of the pups will be around until after the 12th, depends on people's vacations, and there are 13 very steep stairs. Zoë called and talked to the case manager. The thing is if Dan passes the stairs, if he wants to come home, they have to let him.
Even if he could use more work. . .
And it turns out Dan decided he didn't need some one to come in and do his rehab for the first week or two. He decided we were going to drive him 15 miles away everyday for an hour or two.
I don't think he is realizing what we are doing to get the puppies to their homes, the stud owner to pick one AND getting the house safe enough for Dan to be here.
Zoë has told the case manager, that someone had to come here, no matter when Dan comes home. At least for the first two weeks. That they are not to listen to Dan when he says he can do something, unless he proves he can do it.
Unfortunately, we've been through this before with Dan ending back into the hospital.
Dawson, Zoë says thanks, she feels better about talking to the case manager after reading your post.
My sister and I are going to see him tomorrow. Wish us luck.

Fret!… My friend just emailed me and said my package has been put in the mail to Staff!…snort!… Now I will fret and worry until she tells me she has received it… crap!… What if it gets lost in the mail?…sniffle!
10:46 am on August 3rd, 2010
Melanie, We think you and Zoe have to stand united and make decisions that are best for everyone, even if Dan gets a little huffy about it.
Rio, your package will be fine, meaning the one you mailed.
10:52 am on August 3rd, 2010
Melanie and Zoe: Good luck with Dan. I can see that he doesn't want anyone telling him what he should do (just like Sam in his on-line book "Sightings"). He's a feisty one, isn't he? Zoe I'm proud of you for sticking up for yourself on this. Your goals are the same: to get Dan home and to not go back. To help take care of him you have to take care of yourself first. Don't spread yourself too thin.

Not sure if anyone cares, but Barb is doing some research on tomato seed saving. She has done a lot of veggie growing in the past, but not too much with the seed saving. Since she has several people from this blog, plus a couple of other friends who have expressed interest, she is going to try to do it "by the books".
Boy, who knew! Won't bore you with all the details, but it is an 8 step process and takes about 2 weeks to complete.
Should be a fun learning experience, and you guys are the guinea pigs.

Musings from Wolfies mom:
I think that dogs (and KATS!) are some of our greatest treasures in life, and I find it unbearable that some people are willing to abuse them. If I were really rich, I would adopt lots of doggies and give them a forever home. Or at the very least, help people pay their vet bills. To think that some people find it acceptable to hurt animals for profit, or testing, or "fun" is well….my mind can't even go there. I can't understand why anyone would want to hurt the innocents…children, critters, all creatures great and small.
This particulary hits home with us because our children were born drug addicted, and for six years endured unthinkable abuse.
We met them when Chad was 8. They were separated from each other at the time, for two years, which is still upsets me, because I think that twins should grow up together.
We reunited them when they were 10, and have spent the last many years trying to help them heal. It has been an uphill battle, but we are fighting the good fight.
Wolfie is a warrior for the boys. He sleeps with them at night and chases away the nightmares. Literally.
There are many brave members of the Nation within the nation who serve our country well. They are heros. I read that many of the dogs who did search and rescue for nine eleven became depressed because they felt they had failed their duties. I wish more people carried that same sense of responsiblity.

Melanie – that puppy is CUTE!!! Almost as cute as me, Wolfie Wigglebutt. I think I'm in love!

I just read that BP is trying to plug up the well with mud and cement.
Static Kill. I wonder if they pay someone to make up these names?
Geeze!!!
11:43 am on August 3rd, 2010
Barb….mom wants some tomato seeds!! Please??
And Maggie, don't feel bad. My roommate Teddie has accidents every day because she is and old girl. It happens, no big deal.
11:48 am on August 3rd, 2010
Wolfie, Your mom made Barb cry with that touching testimonial.
We think BP must have an ad company that thinks up those names. They must think the names will have a calming and trusting effect on us.
11:54 am on August 3rd, 2010
Wolfie, Melanie and Staff have asked for seeds (but not Rio), so we will add you to the list. She will be saving the seed this next month, to be stored for spring 2011 planting (indoors about 8 weeks before outside planting).
We will figure out a way to mail without you having to put your address on a public blog.
12:19 pm on August 3rd, 2010
Tomato!… I think I related my one tomato story a while back … snort!… Needless to say those two plants are long gone… heh!… I can speak for my friend when I say sending seeds our way will result in a long slow death for any seeds that actually do sprout…. grunt!

Making a Difference
An old man was strolling along a beach one day. In the distance he saw a young boy and girl reach down, pick something up and throw it back into the sea.
Drawing nearer, he saw that the sand was littered with thousands of small stranded sand dollars. The children were patiently picking them up, one at a time, and returning them to safety below the water.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"Saving sand dollars," replied the children as they continued about the job at hand.
The old man, somewhat jaded by age, thought the children's actions were futile.
"But the beach is littered with dying sand dollars. What possible difference can you make by doing this?"
The young girl bent over, picked up another, and threw it with all her might. With a plop the sand dollar sank safely below the water. Then, turning to the old man, she said with all the wisdom of a child:
"I made a difference for that one."
Each of you has made a difference in your own way with your families, with your animals, and with your caring hearts. It just seems like the kind of day to remind you. And we thank Chet for keeping us laughing!
12:45 pm on August 3rd, 2010
Alot of profound writing going on today.
Rio, Don't worry, we will not send you a single tomato. Don't want to rub salt into the wound, but Barb has a couple of plants that are about 6 feet tall, and still growing. She says growing and tending things nourishes her soul.
12:47 pm on August 3rd, 2010
Interesting!…. Someone tends to all my needs and it doesn’t seem to nourish her soul at all… snort!
12:57 pm on August 3rd, 2010
Joke!…snort!
An Old Italian man lived alone in the country. He wanted to dig his tomato garden, but it was very hard work as the ground was hard. His only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament.
Dear Vincent,
I am feeling pretty badly because it looks like I won't be able to plant my tomato garden this year. I'm just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. I know if you were here my troubles would be over. I know you would be happy to dig the plot for me.
Love, Dad
A few days later he received a letter from his son.
Dear Dad,
Don't dig up that garden. That's where I buried the bodies.
Love, Vinnie
At 4 a.m. the next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the old man and left. That same day the old man received another letter from his son.
Dear Dad,
Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That's the best I could do under the circumstances.
Love you, Vinnie
1:03 pm on August 3rd, 2010
Rio, That tomato garden joke has me LMAO. That is really funny. Is your friend hearing these at her busy season place?
And I bet she loves nourishing and tending you. When Barb said "things" she was refering more to plants. She would never call me a thing!
1:46 pm on August 3rd, 2010
That's really funny Vinnie, I mean Riö.
Wölfie's Mom and Dad, you are amazing. So are you Wölfie. (by the way, you are very handsome, and didn't blur
More power to you Staff!
EIGHT STEPS? I just thought you dried them out.
Zoë and I decided the heck with the rest of the day and had puppy time.
They had gotten hot, so we had water time with pups! Here are three pics.

Hey, got some pup pics up at 6:46, but they are "awaiting moderation."
1:49 pm on August 3rd, 2010
Thanks for the link on the Al-Can Highway, Alice. Mom and I can dream about it. I think cats don't get a mention because, to quote my mom once again, "Cats are not as much trouble as you dogs". My mom has never had a cat, so how does she know.
Mom has friends that travel with their two cats all the time. In fact, every winter they go to snowbird country in southern Arizona. Chet and Bernie must sometimes drive past all these thousands of RVs parked and partying for the winter.
That is really neat, Bluecat. Thank you. That is Husky Rescue motto, "Saving Siberians One Life At a Time".
I like for Chet to post different stuff, like about Gina. I hope, I pray, that they do not send her back to Iraq.
2:05 pm on August 3rd, 2010
Tomatoes…All the tomato plants around here last year got a virus and croaked. The same thing has happened this year. The virus must flourish in NM.
2:30 pm on August 3rd, 2010
Still awaiting moderation on the pics. Jeez.
I'm off to go upstairs and read. Looking forward to a bit of Nigel.
Take care everyone!

Thanks to Bluecat and Wolfie's mom for reminding us all that our caring actions are never wasted – they do make a difference.

Staff went out to the quilt shop and had pizza with the Tuesday night quilters that she hangs out with. She got hugs from everyone. She feels really good, but wants a nap. I guess we can let her do that.
Alice Johnson
Melanie that puppy is so darn cute. I don't know if I could resist one, or three. At this size anyway.
Rio I will report the instant I get the blocks. Tomorrow we have to go in for a poke and for Chapter two. Chapter one was 9 pages. I hope we have that many for Chapter two (or more)
could you all say a little prayer that my creatinine level goes down just a little tomorrow? They are threatening tests if it doesn't.
Staff
3:50 pm on August 3rd, 2010
Dogs on this blog, check out that website, dogfriendly, that Alice made a link to earlier today. It is an excellent site, full of useful dog information.
Alice, another reason may be that cats are not mentioned on that website is because you guys have staff to take care of things for you. Us dogs don't have staff. I still think I could use a couple of staff.
3:58 pm on August 3rd, 2010
Staff, we will say a prayer that your creatinine level goes down , and another one for Dan, that he cooperates with those that know best.
4:10 pm on August 3rd, 2010
Hmmmphf!…Our computer is being very fickle tonight!…snort!… Not the same one I thought we had last night…sigh…. So posting tonight will be torturous and time consuming…grunt!… Luckily there is baseball to keep us entertained! …Wooooo!
Rockies!…Against our division Giants!…snort! … It is Very important to WIN it all this series…sneeze!…We have to catch up after all those loses right after the All Star Break…dammit!…
OMG!…. Giants are already up by 4 runs bottom of the 1st inning!… grrrr!…What the hell – we had one phone call to make and this happens… sniff!… It was to her mother so I had to be there to hear everything. Those two are always planning things that don’t include me and it’s starting to tick me off!…grunt!
Prayers!…We can do prayers later for Staff and Dan and anyone else who has a request!!…snort!
4:31 pm on August 3rd, 2010
I have composed a prayer for Staff. I imagine it being sung slowly over and over again by a gospel choir:
Oooooh creatinine
Lordy Lordy creatinine
Oooooh creatinine
Go on down.
Yawwwwn. I am so creative. I will do another:
This is the same choir, but they're stomping and clapping while they sing for Dan:
Y'gotta stay! stay! stay!
Y'gotta stay! stay! stay!
Y'gotta stay! stay! stay!
So you'll never go back no more.
The Librarian is trying to sing them. ACK! They sound much better in my head.
4:36 pm on August 3rd, 2010
Wow!… A Librarian and a gospel song-writer!…sniff!
4:50 pm on August 3rd, 2010
Ugly!…This game is lookin’ ugly right now…snuff!… 6 – 0 Giants in the 4th inning… grunt!…We are NOT giving up because we (she) has seen some very amazing things happen late in the game for the Rockies!…heh!heh!… Hope springs eternal here at our house…sneeze!
4:56 pm on August 3rd, 2010
All the puppies are ADORABLE!! Cute beyond words!
4:59 pm on August 3rd, 2010
I won't make it to the end of the game tonight, but I will still have that hope when I open the sports section of the paper in the morning. There has been more than one morning when I have been happily surprised at the outcome of the Rockies game.
5:05 pm on August 3rd, 2010
SiberH!… Its like 8:07 here right now…snort!… and you are talking beddy bye time?…heh!…What have you been doing all day long to be so tired pal?…grunt!

OMG!… My friend just caught a glimpse of the puppy pictures before I could close the screen…great!… Now she is ogling the puppy pictures… snort!… Mercy! I asked for puppy photos but these are just too much! … cough!… Who wouldn’t pay 2 plus grand for one of these babies if they don’t mind the drool and the shedding later?…. Who, I ask, Who?…heh!… I’m surprised Spencer hasn’t bought one yet!…snort!… Audrey needs some real company, not just a ‘Now and Then’ Secret Agent type….heh!
5:18 pm on August 3rd, 2010
We love the gospel songs for Staff and Dan, and know Rio will not disappoint later with his outstanding prayers. You guys are the best.
5:38 pm on August 3rd, 2010
Yeah, we are kinda wiped out, Rio. The router on my computer conked out. We had to buy a new one and install it, and ended up having to call technical support (Pakistan) twice in order to get it up and working. Having to deal with technical support is one of my mom's worst nightmares.
Skunk smell alert…I'll be going out on a leash tonight.
5:40 pm on August 3rd, 2010
Chet: Gina's story was interesting, BUT WHAT WAS FUNNY?!?!?!?!? I surely hope you get back to Tulip and the Troublesome Tidings tomorrow!
Fatty Kitty: Great songs! Mom got her copy of DTRH today, but she's saving it for her vacation. I hope the librarian gets hers soon. Then she'll be reading instead of singing!
5:48 pm on August 3rd, 2010
SiberH!… Oh my! That sucks big time buddy!…snort!… Thank goodness your friend was able to deal with it all. And I am so glad she speaks Pakistani… whew!.. We here are still having problems with our old computer and discussing the fact of possibly buying a new computer with all the upgrades, bells and whistles.. sigh!…She really needs to save for a new car in case that goes bye-bye, but it is a Subaru and I keep telling her it will last forever and the computer is the MOST important thing…heh!heh!.. She is waffling about the whole thing. …
6:07 pm on August 3rd, 2010
Rio: Sorry your team isn't doing so well, but just remember some of the fantastic rallies they've had this season — cross your paws!
Unfortunately all the crossed paws in the world can't help the Angels. Mom's team lost to Dad's team today — that bums Mom. Dad's been bragging that his team is the "best of the worst," since they're totally in the cellar. And now the Angels can't even beat them!!! What's this world coming to?
6:09 pm on August 3rd, 2010
Sucks! …Gosh! This game is still at 7- 0 giants in the bottom of the 7th….grump!… We need some major league action here! …sniff!…the Rockies are up to bat now… so maybe…snuffle?
Kirby!…That whole DISTRACTION was unnecessary in my opinion!… snort!.. I was so ready for the motel Funny business to be revealed….grump!…But NO! One of our own had to distract Chet and his telling of tails…growl!… Maybe tomorrow we will learn more? …sniff!sniff!
6:12 pm on August 3rd, 2010
Okay, mom is telling me that it is lights out and computer off if I want her to get me to the dog park in the morning.
Goodnight Friends!
Go Rockies!!!

Rio: Since today's post was so late, it makes me wonder if "someone" was having a little case of writer's block, when "someone else" fortuitously emailed a little doggy story to "someone." Voila! Today's post! If that's the case, I hope "someone" gets over his writer's block real soon, and gets back to that danged motel room!

Fatty Kitty: Nice gospel songs for Staff and Dan but does the Librarian really have to sing them? I can hear her all the way up here – ouch!
Chet: Now focus on one thing for tomorrow. What's going on in Tulip's room and where is Astrid?

Tonight… a prayer or two.
Lord of All Creation all Creatures Great and Small, you know how weak I am and how mislead I get over unimportant things. Please Lord, hear me now as I tell you my heart felt desires for others. Dan is still in need of more therapy, he wants so badly to go home. Lord is there a way he can see the puppies without having to be there in person? He needs way more care and will not do well at home right now. Please settle his heart and soul and somehow let him see the puppies before they leave his home. I know he will miss them terribly. Lord, please let him somehow be able to say ‘goodbye’ to them.
Lord, we have Nancy on our hearts so heavily tonight. You have given her a new kidney and please let it be a kidney her body can respond to and work with to make her feel so much better. She is so important to us all, we love her Lord and we pray that you will give her body the strength and desire to accept this new kidney with a passion! Nancy is a passionate woman who lives to create things of beauty everyday. We need her so much Lord, please take special care of her and give her the strength to get through all the poking and prodding. We all say "Amen".

sniff, sniff, snorkle, (I really like to snorkle)
Thank you Rio, FattyKitty/Librarian and everyone else. You guys are making me feel loved. I will send all that love to the new kidney. And give it some more water and some more rest.
Night all
