Here’s That Rainy Day

“But I was supposed to play tennis,” Admin says.

“Not going to happen,” Spence says. “And I hear you’re wearing non-matching tennis shoes, one black, one white. What’s up with that?”

“Not talking about it.”

Welcome Gaya from Rio, Harley (with his interesting life story), Sammy.

Its gonna be a looooooong day

Not sure when YSAS and Hamlet are arriving. They better bring jackets!

Good morning, y’all! Mom’s getting ready to head into town — she’ll be working at her library’s booth at the state library’s Storyfest — Marc Brown (author of the Arthur books) and Denise Fleming are going to be there! She’ll be spending several hours signing people up for summer reading. Have all y’ll signed up for your summer reading programs at your local library?!

Question for those in the know. We have a ton of pea pods that are ready, and we only use them in stir-fry. Any other cooking ideas? Siber?

We also thought of freezing them in little bags. Should we try blanching for a minute or so, then freeze?

  30. Siber-H
    12:17 pm on June 2nd, 2012

Set down, Barb, I may know the answer to this because the guy across the street blanches. Yes, You should blance them for a minute then freeze.
You could have them in stir-fry all year long that way.

  31. Siber-H
    12:24 pm on June 2nd, 2012

If you don’t blanch the peas before freezing, the peas will be tough.

Fellow Sibers, you more or less win the bet. I know blanch means put them in hot or boiling water. That is all I know. I don’t know how to do it.

Glad your mom will be feeling better soon, Wolfie. She has been through a lot.

Oley, we are talking about edible pea pods, not English shell peas. I think snow pea is another name for them. Would love your recipe for the chicken salad.

Blanching basically is plunging them into boiling water for a minute, then puting them into ice cold water for a fast chill before freezing. The idea is to stop the enzimes that cause deterioration.

I think I remember that we’re not having an auction due to the amount of work it took last time. No auction, correct?

    2:24 pm on June 2nd, 2012

    Hi all.

Kirby – we here really like the Arthur books. Your mom is lucky to meet the author. Does she have a book recommendation for a blog summer reading program? After all, the Plunderers are an internet reading group.

Wookie – my attorney boy had driving to court clothes and in-court clothes. Once (or twice) he forgot to change into his in-court dress s h o e s and had to hurry back to the car trunk for proper attire.

Wish the new Friends of Chet would blog along with us. The more the merrier.

Instead of Oprah’s Book Club it would be The Plunderer’s Book Club.

I went to an estate sale and I blanched when I saw the prices they wanted for “designer clothes”. I also blanched when I tried on the Gucci heels then tried to stand. Blanching is fun if limited to extremely short periods (10 – 15 seconds).

Hi everyone – we are Happy Corgis! Why?, you may ask. Its cuz Mama’s home! (whispering – even if she is kinda cranky, at least she’s home)
So, they got up at 3 am, hit the road at 3:45, driving through blinding sheets of rain and high wind. “It will be better in Boston”, they kept telling themselves. And indeed, when they got to Boston at 6 am, it wasn’t raining.
They got their whole booth set up, when it started to drizzle. So they put plastic walls up on three sides. Then at 7:30am the wind hit. And the rain got serious. Soon they were watching the rain come down sideways, and they could see when the next gust of wind would hit because they could see it pushing the water down the street. They tied things down as best they could; its Boston, and the city won’t allow you to stake the tents down. Other tents were becoming airborne. Dad was standing at the front of the tent, pretending to be an anchor and holding the tent frame to keep it from blowing over. Another huge gust tore down the street and LIFTED DAD RIGHT OFF HIS FEET.
Thats when Mama said “To h-e-double toothpicks with this!” She started packing and Dad went to get the van. The show producer came over to ask them not to go, but just then the city engineer guy came over and said “No electricity for you!”. Then a couple of backhoes drove onto the show grounds – seems they were there under contract with the city to dig up a couple of places, one of which was directly where Mama’s booth was, to plant trees.
The show producer knew when he was beat – he officially closed the show and sent everyone home.
So, they drove home with everything wet – especially them. (don’t you just hate the smell of wet human?)They put the heat on full blast, and the 70’s radio station full blast, and sang bad disco songs all the way home.
Then they stopped at Costco and got asparagus and asiago cheese ravioli for dinner.
We tried to tell them – some days it just doesn’t pay to get out of bed.

Hello, hello, hello, hello . . . (that’s an echo)

We’ve been without electricity. For some reason the computer does not work with out it. Bummer.

It is now back and YSAS and Hamlet are arriving in a few minutes. Good thing the electricity came back or Hamlet would be sleeping on wet soapy sheets.

Wrestled with the screens in the west wing. They need help. I have held them together with duct tape. I opened on window (not used much) and the entire sill has been eaten away. sigh

Add it to the list. That list will be taken care of this summer. That go-to guy will be replacing clapboards, and now this window and then patching painting. Next summer it will be painting the entire house.

Yawn, Abbie wouldn’t stop keeping her ears back that day. I made her stay in the chair for a photo op and she was sort of grouchy. She has to put up with a lot sometimes.

    Night all.

    Rebecca, lock your doors.

Believe it or not, MAma is still up too – even after getting up at the crack of night, driving thru the rain, setting up a booth, breaking down a booth, and driving back in the slashing rain.
    Is she nuts?
