Hercules: Great Name, Great Member of the Nation Within

“Believe in karma?” Spence says.

“Nope,” says Admin.

“Not even a little bit?”

“Not even a smidgen.”

“Maybe this will change your mind. This couple rescued a dog who was facing a grim future and very quickly had their reward.”

“There’s anecdote,” says Admin. “And then there’s proof.”

Today at New England Crime Bake: Spence is on a panel, but the conference is sold out so forget about this.

    Good Saturday Morning All:

The Prof and I are off to do some Christmas shopping at the mall. Thankfully, we do not have many gifts to get.

    Hercules, that is some dog!

    (singing) Hercules,
    softness in eyes
    iron in his thighs
    virtue in his heart
    fire in every part
    of the mighty

    Good luck, Spence!

Good on ya, Hercules! (Can you tell I’m thinking of LizF this morning?)
    G’day Liz and everyone.
I have had a lesson on how to make oatmeal, Dad’s way. Who knew there were so many steps?
Staff and I are off to a class on how to freeze water. Heh. Should be interesting.

Well, we made it through the storm with only a 8 hour loss of power beginning around 5 pm last night. On Bear’s list of preparations should have been a reminder to replace the flashlight batteries. Mom was trying to read, but her flashlight started dimming out and she had to turn it off. At one point we woke up to the sound of thundering rain. Then, this morning, saw the remnants of hail on the patio chairs & wooden deck, along with the last minutes of the night’s still full moon, halo-like, hanging in the western sky.

Dawson, we just saw a rating on oatmeal, and Trader Joe’s was rated the best. We are going to get some and try it.

    Dad’s Hot Cereal
Bring to boil 1.5 cups of filtered water, 1/4 tsp. salt and 1/2 handful of raisins (approx. 1/4 cup)
Put salt container back exactly where you found it.
Put raisins back exactly where you found them.
Measure .25 cup of oatmeal and .25 cup of 10 grain cereal.
Put both cereal containers back exactly where you found them.
    Add cereals to boiling water.
    Turn flame to very low.
While it is cooking, put hot water in your cereal bowl to preheat.
Put two thicknesses of paper towel on stove to put the bowl on.
Dump the hot water out of the bowl.
Put the bowl on the paper towels.
After 2.5 (approx) minutes, take cover off and stir until you can feel the cereal is thick enough.
When it is thick enough, turn the flame off, put the cover back on and wait for the alarm.
When the alarm goes off, push the button to silence it.
Stir 1 Tbsp. butter into the hot oatmeal until it is all melted.
Pour the hot cereal into the bowl and move it to the table.
Serve with 1/2 and 1/2 cream.
All measurements must be exact, except the raisins.

Rio: It was not too long ago that you were worried that your friend’s cards wouldn’t sell. We all knew better…

Anyone get the feeling that Wolfie has been busy helping his mom make the jelly to pay off his credit card debit? That’s a lot of jelly…of course, it was a lot of beer.

Dawson: lol. Thanks for sharing your dad’s oatmeal recipe (could you also send it to Dishlickers when you have a chance so it can be added to the cookbook?) However, we are not familiar with the 10 grain cereal – is it in a oatmeal type consistency? What is the brand name?

At our house, for a quick and easy breakfast on a cold winter’s morning, Bear recommends Three Bear’s Hot Porridge: Add a half cup of oats to 1 cup of boiling water with a dash salt…return to a boil…cover for five minutes…stir, add a pat of butter, top with cinnamon, brown sugar & roasted pecans. Add cream and enjoy!

    Hello everybody,

We have been too busy to post anything on the blog. We are training the Pipsqueak. Well, mostly Meashka and Sasha are training her. They have shown her the entire perimeter of the property and Kat is very confident that she knows all the good places to go and be safe.

We finally read Melanie’s essay for the Living Legend award. That was beautiful! and we are all choked up too.

Bear, glad you survived that terrible storm. We still don’t have our generator but after reading about others’ power outages, we want one for sure.

Is that 10 grain cereal another cooked cereal like Malt-O-Meal? Loved your recipe, Dawson. Must be given with Dad standing behind you or in the same room at least!

We received our Dream Catcher also. It is beautiful. Ben is going to to so thrilled! Barb can’t wait for Christmas, so she is going to take it with her on Monday when she meets up with Kelly in Rockford. That way she can really study it without the craziness of Christmas morning gift opening.

Supper!…Because of this guy every one skipped lunch for some reason so now she has been tasked with making supper early tonight….grunt!… Baked chicken and yadda yadda…sniff!… Does anyone know that Helmans mayonnaise recipe for coating chicken???…wuffle!…She just needs to google it perhaps….heh!

Way nicer than she ever has been to me…wuffle! …I don’t like that at all..sneeze! …I’m not letting him near my friend….growl!…He can just go sit in the corner for all I care…sniff!

Barb just went out and picked arugula again to add to her salad. That stuff loves the cold weather. 26 degrees the other night, and the stuff is still going strong. Michele O had a good idea when she suggested growing it. Very dark green, so it’s got to have lots of vitamins.

I bet by the time I’ve written this we’re already on the dark side.

Okay, Dawson: Zoe wouldn’t even let me finish the recipe! She was laughing too hard.

Rio: The Pack feels your pain.

Bella: Take my advice . . . That’s a gem. That could be written for teenage boys. As Zoe put it earlier, thank Dog there’s no teenagers in the family right now.

A disguise for Rio’s friend. Hmmm. Pondering.

Had a great time today. Turns out that “Shape Note Singing” is “Sacred Harp Singing”.
My sister used to be a member of a group and was having a fine time singing. I had no idea what the note shapes meant, but near the end was figuring parts of it out. When they finally did a slower song as I was able to join in. Comes from Appalachian singing in the early years of our country. Most people couldn’t read music so the shaped notes told them what to do. The harmonies are unreal. About 100 people singing. Very nice.

Lunch was also great. Eggs Benedict made for gluten free people!

To bed now. . . It’s nice to know that we have nine dogs the size of Hercules that live with us.

Hi, guys! We received our bear fetish that we purchased in the MMCS!! It is totally awesome (as we knew it would be) and are very excited to have it watching over our house. And Mom went to the post office and mailed our items to the people who purchased them. The guy at the post office said they should be delivered on Monday! Wow, that’s fast since we mailed them this afternoon. We say don’t look for them until Tuesday.

Rio, do you know FOR SURE that the person who dropped off Bo is coming back? Many sneaky people pretend to be just going off for a little while and then…BAM…they never come back. You may have a little brother, after all.

Melanie, we read AJ’s story yesterday and don’t remember if we told you how great it is. Be sure to give us the heads up when we need to start voting. It goes without saying that it will be one of the finalists.

Hey everyone – quick check in after a very busy day. So glad to hear that packages have been arriving safely – no Marauding Goats. Siber – poor puppy – sounds like you have to wait til Monday, but never fear – patience will be your reward.

Dawson – love the oatmeal recipe. Our Dad and our Gramp don’t ever mess with Mama when she’s cooking. They are both as terrified of getting lost in the kitchen as if it was a Greek mythological labyrinth – complete with minataur. But then once dinner is served, Gramp starts with – “well, what would happen if”…and starts making recipe suggestions. And most of them make about as much sense as adding a marshmellow to a glass of champagne. sigh….

Glad Melanie had a fun day.

Rio, I think she is just making up the rules as she goes along.

    Time’s up!
It’s Rio’s birthday on April 15th but he is grumpy because he is not eligible for a bonus…AND because he has a visitor who is probably trying to get into his nice soft bed right about now.
    Good night all.

He tried to come downstairs and I let him have it with my most fierce bitching-out gruff!gruffle!….sniff!… My friend was not very happy with me, but it doesn’t matter because he high-tailed it back upstairs…wheeze!…Now I have my friend all to myself down here in the basement. All to myself if I don’t count all those little bits of paper…heh!

Rio: I don’t know about getting the quilt. We don’t know the torture and teasing and the untold amount of zingers withheld that Dawson had to endure due to her little sister status. She may have well earned that beautiful dance of purple. Perhaps Dawson has an honorable mention prize for you knowing your birthday. 🙂

We just watched the most remarkable movie, “Dean Spanley”, in which the dean recalls his previous life as a dog. It was heartwarming, sad, joyous, and intriguing. Sam Niell was the Dean/dog and Peter O’tool was his master.

Macy that movie sounds very interesting. I have never heard of it. I have liked Sam Neill since he was in Reilly, Ace of Spies on PBS. And Peter O’Toole of course.

The music from Reilly Ace of Spies is the Romance movement from Dmitri Shostakovich’s The Gadfly Suite. I love it.
