Help!!!

“What’s your rule again for handling embarrassing situations?” Spence says.

“Transparency,” says Admin. “Let it rip.”

“OK, here we go. A Plunderer* sent a very nice Xmas gift, namely a Snowhook Kennel** mug. There was also a card featuring Snoopy, a card with a warm and much appreciated note. But – unsigned! And the box it came in must have gotten thrown out with a bunch of other boxes. So would the sender please self-identify at spence.quinn@gmail.com? Much appreciated.”

* A wonderful sub-group here at the blog.

Good morning, All! Spence and Admin, we remember someone on here saying they got you that mug. It was not us.
Now we have to hurry outside for a trail ride. After that, we’ve been promised a hike!

Good morning all. It was also not our group that sent the gift. We just sent a card.

HOH, That was Diane that named the day.

Here it is a Soggy Saturday. Warm temps again, but a big drop starts by the end of the day. It is scary warm here in northern Illinois.

Does anyone like to read Jodi Picoult? I have read most of her books (refuse to read 19 Minutes). Currently reading Leaving Time, and LOVE it so far. If you like animals- doubt if there is anyone on this here blog that doesn’t- I think you will like this book.

Rio, I wish I was there to make a trail for you and Beau in the snow.
Sun is out here but only a high of 35 degrees. Mom thinks she is cold…gah

Mom tried a Jodi Picoult book. About every third paragraph, some character in the book started crying. Mom thought this was too much false high drama, didn’t finish the book, and will never read another one.

When I queried the blog about Pot Pie last night I should have said what spices would you use? I know what I use for the Chicken Pot Pie, but I don’t cook that way with beef usually so I was looking for some spice guidance.

There is a cool video on you tube about 8 ways your cat is a dog. I have two more.

*If they turn over and then dig in the garbage
*If they ‘clean up’ any food scraps that land on the floor.
*If they eat anything (except carrots for Thing One)

I am beginning to think Thing One and Thing Two spent their first 7 weeks being fostered by a dog

The beef soup will be done as soon as the wild rice pilaf mix finished cooking…about 45 more minutes. I don’t seem to be able to cook a small amount of soup. I had to move up to the bigger pot. There is probably 1.5 gallons in the big pot right now. But the fridge is a lot emptier.

Staff – when in doubt about spices, use tarragon and white wine for chicken and turkey….marjoram and red wine or sherry for beef. Rosemary and sherry for pork and garlic, rosemary and strong coffee for lamb.

When I roast meat I usuallly keep it pretty simple. Love garlic with pork roast. My go to spice for roast chicken or even chicken on the grill, is Herbs De Provence. I do a heavy sprinkling over a whole roast chicken, throw a peeled onion in the cavity and use a little butter to keep it moist. I also use fresh ground pepper and course kosher salt on everything.

I didn’t remember that MPM liked elephants, so my memory must not be like theirs.

Barb, Maggie & Lucy: I found some chocolate with lavender in it at the Farmer’s Market in Minneapolis. It was delish! There is a bottle of lavender in the spice cupboard with which I didn’t know what to do. I used my leftover egg whites to make meringue, folding in minced pecans, lavender and dark cocoa. It also is delish. I may finish it off by frosting with chocolate buttercream and topping with whipped cream but they may not make it that far.

I have officially caught “the crud”. I slept fitfully and finally, tired of tossing and turning I got up and into a hot bath. Then back to bed. I’m up to get some food and water, then back under the quilt.

Pure serenity Howlers! Can you walk to that view from your property or is it a drive?

That book title does sound like something in the C & B series. Didn’t someone suggest that once?

One of the main characters in Leaving Time is Jenna, a 13 year old girl who is smart, witty and determined. She reminds me a lot of Ingrid in P.A.’s series. Each of the main characters narrates in his or her chapters. Interesting technique.

The lavender you mentioned is a main ingredient in Herbs de Provence. You can find it in most specialty stores, and even Home Goods and T J Maxx carry it in their gourmet food section. I get a jar for about $5-$6 and it lasts a year. It is also good on grilled pork chops.

    Feel better, Dawson!

Yesterday I made turkey/veggie/noodle soup. Used juice from the Christmas turkey (and commercial chicken broth) with bay leaves, minced onions, carrots and potatoes. Cooked broccoli and cauliflower separately because supposedly they would make the soup taste icky if cooked in it. Added the turkey and noodles and voila! Delish if I say so myself. Gave some to the other buddy’s sister to take to her daughter in Minneapolis (whose husband is fighting non-Hodgkins lymphoma and blood cancer) and thought Auntie’s soup might boost the appetite.

B,M,&L, we have never seen Herbs de Provence, but we will keep looking.
We are not within walking distance of that photo. We had to drive about 30 minutes, to a ski resort area. The same trail that Mom and Pop bike on often, has its northern part starting at that resort. Neither they, nor we, had seen this part before, but we will be returning for sure.

We haven’t made those around here in ages and ages. Mama and her mother used to get together and make golumpkies and pierogis from scratch. Oh my….

Dawson – next time you make yourself a cup of tea with loose tea leaves, throw some of that lavender in there. It tastes cozy. It makes very good iced tea too, for those of you not suffering from winter blasts.

Rio – gee, thanks for the mental image of a Pug freezing his kabobs off. We may need therapy to get over that one.

Rio, the elephant sanctuary started when Carol Buckley rescued Baby Tarra from a circus. They got together with Scott Blais, got 2700 acres and about 30 more elephants, all from captivity. But then came the dreaded board of directors. They didn’t like Carol and fired her, separating her from Terra. She was basically Tarra’s Momma. I cried for weeks. How could they do such a thing if they really cared for elephants?
