Hawaiian Pants
As readers of the Chet and Bernie series know, Hawaiian pants play a highly negative role in the fortunes of C&B. Here’s a pertinent email from Ellen, a very entertaining reader. (If anyone has relevant photo evidence, please send.)
Hello. I’m a big fan of your Chet and Bernie books. As a sharp eyed reader, I just wanted to alert you to the fact that there is a fashion trend out there that is alarmingly like Bernie’s beloved Hawaiian pants. It is the male romper. I just saw a young man, seemingly normal, in a pink floral romper at a waterfront restaurant on the Chesapeake Bay. Every older woman dining on the deck followed him with their eyes. Men averted their eyes and mumbled things like, “Did he lose a bet to have to wear that?”. His party walked to a pavilion bar at the end of the pier. I didn’t get a great look at his outfit, not having my glasses on, so I walked down the pier to take a look at the bar & the onesie wearer. The romper wearer was with a group of 20-somethings, part of a pre wedding get together. His friend was leaning into him and I heard this snatch of a conversation. “…attention. You just had to wear that f***ing…..”. Very close to those Hawaiian pants, very close.

At some point in the future we feel Hawaiian print pants and possibly onesies will become very popular.
That is when Chet and Bernie will no longer have financial issues!

HOH: Bernie doesn’t read about fashion on FB or social media. He will sell those Hawaiian pants in storage for pennies on the dollar just to get rid of them and stop paying the monthly storage fees. He will figure the years in storage have not been good for the fabric and make what he considers is a good deal. Later he will start seeing them appear and be told it is a new fashion trend. Bernice is always going to be doomed to financial problems. No new Porshe for him and Chet!

I agree Hobbit.
Something negative to Bernie’s finances will happen with those pants.
The storage place will burn down, taking the pants with it.
He’ll find he’s been paying rental to store them when rats or rain or something got in there and they’re all moldy or eaten to shreds or something.
Or as you say, he’ll decide to sell them for pennies on the dollar just to get rid of them and save his storage fees, only to find it’s just ahead of a huge fashion trend among surfers or skate boards and those Hawaiian pants are selling for four times what he paid. He’ll see his pants advertised on the internet (or maybe his boy wil be wearing some his parents bought him), the exact same pants he owned, but his $10 pants are selling for $125+.
Whatever the situation, you can be sure Bernie will be on the losing end.
I just hope Bernie has one or two pair in the back of the closet to either wear or give to his son.
That onesie fashion trend will never take off. I seem to remember it started at least a year or two ago and so far, nothing. Why? For the same reason women don’t wear jumpsuits any more. The overall problem (see what I did there) is going to the bathroom. It is a PITA.
Meanwhile, I have just purchased a collar and bandana set for my sister’s dog’s birthday that is palm trees and flamingoes.
Franklin has discovered the fun of the hose and the wading pool. Lucky Franklin. Just wait until his Mom attaches the sprinkler head to the hose and turns it on the lawn. Franklin is going to be in heaven. He won the doggy lottery and is living his best life.
Picked up two bags of sand today. Coarse for a base and fine to sweep in after the bricks are laid. It’s still 77 so I may not get the weedcloth down and the sand laid before dark. I’ll work on getting the printer working instead. Maybe some stuff moved around in the kitchen in case the refrigerator arrives.
Tomorrow it will be 89 and nothing will get done outside. More work inside the kitchen. Plus some water-walking at the Kroc Center pool I have a 2pm reservation which will be during peak heat. I think I’ll get a spot for Thursday too if I can. And maybe Friday. It’s going to stay in the 80s until at least Monday.
Has anyone tried to take their recycling in lately? The place at the Windmill Farms parking lot is gone and I have bottles and bags of aluminum cans in my car. I’m going to have to go to the landfill to see if their recycler is still there. If I can’t find anyplace I’ll have to start putting them in the blue bin which I do not want to do. That is just throwing away money when I paid a fee when I bought them. I want to get my fee back for turning them in, not just give it to the city. I’m wondering…is this a conspiracy for the city (and state) to collect money that we can’t get back because all of the recycling centers have closed?

Recyling!…My friend is still able to take all of our bottles and cans to a recycling center here…snort!…She needs to go soon as we have a big load of bags filled up plus she gets the library’s bottles too…wheeze!

Here is a secret. Mr. Fireslippers has a pair of pajama bottoms that he has worn for a few years. They are a stretchy blue cotton with a palm tree design. Hawaiian pants? 😉 You tell me.
