Happy Presidents Day

“Let’s wish everyone a happy Presidents Day,” Spence says.

“But it’s actually Washington’s birthday, or close,” says Admin. “What happened to Lincoln’s birthday? It used to get its own holiday.”

“So you’re for more public holidays?” Spence says.

“I didn’t say that.”

“But I’m happy to,” says Spence. “More holidays! Life shouldn’t be work and nothing but.”

“Heard of globalization?” Admin says. “You’re too late.”

“Maybe and maybe not.”

Good morning everyone. We remember when holidays had a date and not a close Monday.

I much prefer retirement to work.

According to my calendar, Lincoln’s birthday was February 12 and Washington’s birthday is February 22.

    Good morning all.

Happy Presidents Day. Momma told me that there used to be holidays for both Washington’s and Lincoln’s birthdays, but then the greedy employers got them consolidated so that they only had to give their workers one holiday.
Bee, I agree with you: retirement is so much better than work. I get all of my momma and dad’s time. And they are so darn happy and relaxed. Zeus, on the other paw, worries constantly that the money will run out and he will go hungry.

Rio, sorry for my post-and-run last evening. Momma decided to invite neighbors over for beer at the fire pit at the last minute. I had to help host you know. It’s a hard life, but someone has to keep up appearances.

Chet, Spence, Admin: We Remember that too! Lincoln had His Own Holiday back in the day.
At least Johnson gave us a 3 Day Weekend…always a plus.

I think I remember getting a day off from school for Lincoln’s birthday and also one for Washington’s birthday back when I was young and it really was Happy Presidents Days.

Howlers: Yes, someone here remembers 2 presidential holidays in February once-upon-a-time.

    Fried/poached steak? Gag.

Masquers, I totally agree with your steak comment. Great way to ruin a good steak.

    And Dawson, ditto!

Staff, we have had hundreds of cranes flying over for the last 3 days. Big migration. Where are they headed?

Hey BMALS, did you know that cranes fly with their necks stretched out and herons pull their heads back and fly with their necks curved.

Some of those cranes will eventually end up close to here.

More holidays! I soooo agree. Americans are working themselves to death. An 8-hour workday is a joke. By the time you factor in transportation time and an unpaid lunch hour, it is easily10 hours from leaving home to arriving home again. It was in the 1920s that Americans got a 40-hour work week. I think almost 100 years later we can do better. Plus families can use more holidays and 3-day weekends. I also think that if people have to work on a federal holiday, they should get overtime pay. Getting off my soapbox.

HOH, I did not know that about their flying techniques.

My cat rescue has been offered a 36-pound Norwegian Forest Cat to foster. I was very tempted but it doesn’t get along with dogs…plus Sadie and Mr. Big might run away if I brought home another cat.

I have been shoveling for days and it is still snowing. Today I was sweeping the 18 steps down into the dog yard. As I was shoveling the dog yard, I noticed that Mr. Big had followed me half way down the stairs. He turned to go back up and Sadie was blocking the top of the stairs. Payback for Mr. Big as he does that daily to Sadie on the house stairs

BMALS, it’s a clue to use when birding or working on a migration bird count.

(Sigh) Nearly the end of President’s Day weekend. I neglected to mention that out here in the Lower Left Hand Corner yesterday marked a sad and shameful anniversary–that of Executive Order 9066, 75 years ago.
HOH–which are the big white ones–I saw one eating a lizard a few days ago (and I wish nature could be less red in tooth and claw).

DianeC, sounds like Egrets, could be Snowy or Common depending on size. One has yellow feet. They are related to Herons.

Your mention of FDR’s order reminded us of a Japanese-American mom taught with in Vista, CA. She always said her parents met at camp. She was 35 before she realized it was internment camp. The land her dad farmed is now the poinsettia fields in Encinitas.

From the paper: 125,000 chickens were imported to Alaska last year compared to 39,000 the year before. Here is to all the backyard chicken farmers out there.

We saw Canada Geese here yesterday!

    “I’m melting, I’m melting”
Flood warnings up in parts of the state. I am worrit that my expensive parrot tulips will come up and FREEZE. The back yard and the front yard look like ponds.
    It feels like late March.
