Happy Patriots’ Day, Everybody!

“But most of our readers are saying, ‘Huh?'” says Spence.

“They don’t have Patriots’ Day?” says Admin.

“No – except for in Maine, where it’s Patriot’s Day. But the point is it’s in memory of the start of the Revolutionary War at the battles of Lexington Green and the Old North Bridge in Concord. That’s what Emerson was referencing here:

By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April’s breeze unfurled,
Here once the embattled farmers stood,
And fired the shot heard round the world.”

“Embattled farmers,” Admin says. “That’s good stuff.”

“And now we have embattled marathoners every Patriots’ Day, as well as a morning game at Fenway Park featuring embattled Red Sox. It’s a nice partial sort of holiday.”

“More holidays!”

Thanks for all that good stuff, Spence!

Had a nice day yesterday at Kelly’s. Good food, and then all the 7 kids there (ages 10-17) went out into the backyard and played like old fashioned kids. Tree swing, playing catch, giant solar balloon) No electronics for over an hour. A sight to behold!

Very interesting. Thank you Spence. (According to the Wikipedia article, Emerson’s grandfather and father–who was a young boy at the time–witnessed the battle because they lived near North Bridge in their home known as the Old Manse.)

    Good morning all.

Good morning! That was interesting. Mom remembered the phrase “shot heard around the world” but could not have told you from what author or referencing what war.

Thank you Spence for the interesting post.

I can’t even imagine the traffic nightmare in Boston today!

Grizz and I recently watched the movie “Patriots Day.” Very good film.

    Good day to all!

    I am here! :^)

I am planning a day trip for tomorrow. I am a big Frank Lloyd Wright fan, so I am heading to the upper East Side to photograph the Guggenheim Museum, which is Wright’s design. I own the LEGO set of the museum.

Getting ready to watch the Yankee game!

Hello everyone. I started the morning with the whole day gloriously stretching in front of me. Then a couple of cat-related phone calls and I am just now settling in for a quiet evening at home. Ugh.

Spring has sprung and I might even put away the snow shovels. I cleaned up the dog yard yesterday. With all the snow, picking up poop got delayed and then covered with layers of snow. On the down side, with everything melting, Sadie is tracking in a lot of mud these days. Yes, it is mud not poop.
