Love that version of the song. I think it is almost as old as Barb!

She was invited out for a late dinner with both Kelly and Josh’s groups, but is going to stay home and avoid the crazies.

Going to buy some appys and watch the new year count down, at least in NYC.

Any special foods you have for good luck? I think Howlers have pork and sauerkraut. We have to have some pickled herring.

Barb, mom makes Hoppin’ John (with smoked turkey instead of pork) over rice with greens. Traditional southern dish for health and prosperity.

We have heard of eating Hoppin John or black eyed peas, also collard greens.

Howlers, is the pork and sauerkraut supposed to be for New Year’s Day?

  12. O'Howlers
    10:56 am on December 31st, 2014

We get the old dry kibble too, but the ‘rents have pork and sauerkraut. It is what everyone in this area eats on New Years. Mom makes black eyed peas as a side dish. That is not a tradition here, but Mom loves beans, and her favorite beans book has a New Years recipe for black eyed peas, so she jumped on that tradition a few years ago.

Here is a recipe for Hoppin John from Pioneer Woman. http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2011/12/hoppin-john/

We do not make Hoppin John. The recipe we use for our black eyed New Years peas uses bell peppers, garlic, onions, parsley, thyme, and of course black eyed peas. Also, lots of hot sauce.

That works, Dawson. May work best for all of us. Some of the things we will be burning have to do with pain we experienced, but we struggle with wording if we share them in public, because we do not want to let go of the joyful parts, nor disrespect anyone, 2-legged or 4-legged.

Macy, write down a bad memory of 2014 on each scrap. In your case, we think one scrap will do. It will make for a good size fire.
For each scrap, say it aloud, and think on it. Then toss it in the fire and Look Ahead.
2015 will be a better year.

Happy New Year, All–For some reason I was betting the Frank Loesser song would be “Standin’ on the Corner Watchin’ All the Girls Go By”. This was a favorite of mine when I was a small child but today would probably be considered vagrancy, or loitering with intent, or quasi-stalker behavior. chet’s choice is much more approrpiate.
sinc most of what I eat all the time closely resembles Hopping John it’s probably going to be some kindof dressed-up noodles with broccoli, spinach, carrots, and whatever else I can think of.
It is icy here (go ahead and laugh you guys in the Frozen North) 54 degrees F and the dogs STILL want to go outside. Maybe after I bundle up…

    Where is Siber-H, anyway?
Brrrr (from Mom). She just got off Annie, after riding in these 20 mph COLD winds, that made for wind chills of 15 degrees. Annie says this is Sibe weather, but most definitely NOT Arab weather. Still, she was her angelic self. Who’s a good horse?

  35. Siber-H
    3:38 pm on December 31st, 2014

Yes, Yes, Yes, I am waiting for the snow that is suppose to arrive tonight. The moisture comes from Diane and the cold air comes from Canada with Rio wishing very hard for it to leave him and move on down here.
After saying all that, I will believe in the storm’s existence after I actually see the white stuff on the ground.
How will we spend New Yeas Eve? Mom will try to sleep through it, and I will wake her up several times to see if we have snow.

Mom doesn’t think she has ever heard the song that Spence posted the link to.

    Happy New Years Eve Everyone!!

We found our post from last year. It made us sniffle a little thinking about the good things that had happened. And it made us sniffle for other reasons. But we are doing this again this year. And our friends of this here blog go on the good side of the list. From last year:

“We also have another tradition. We spend the day making two lists. One is all the bad things of this past year. The other is the things we are grateful for. We draw a heavy black line through the bad things, and decorate the list of good things with doodles of anything pretty. When we do our 9 o’clock prayer, we will burn both of those lists with sage, and let the smoke take both away the pain, and raise our grateful thoughts to the Creator.

This year, our Grateful list will start with “Leonard can walk again, and is free of pain”. It will also include “We have a wonderful family of friends on the blog” and “Nana came back to us” and so many other things. Guess we better get started writing.”

  37. Staff
    4:13 pm on December 31st, 2014

I Like the idea of two lists. When I started to make my list I kept remembering the good things that happened this year. I realize that the bad things are either worry or sadness about people I love.

It took me a long time to make up the bad list but at the end there are only 5 things I want to burn up. And when I sat down to write them out it only took me a minute.

I wonder if I can burn up a list for Alice. Will it count? I know what she wants to burn up…

I believe the good list will be much longer.

    4:15 pm on December 31st, 2014

Amalia, will your ceremony be at the regular blog prayer time? If so we can all do it at once. I wonder if it will work if I put some dried sage in my luminarie? That is where I intend to burn my list.

Hello everyone. For the first time in recorded history, 2014 marked the year that Anchorage had no sub zero temperatures. And it is raining today the last day of the year. We want/need our arctic weather back.

Kittens are doing super well after 3 days of medicine–4 more to go. They never got really sick (still playful and eating) but now they are zooming around and snarfing down bigger portions of food. Three of the litter of 6 are already spoken for and tomorrow a couple of people are going to visit for a look see. I will keep the mama once again through the spaying and recovery process. I do love fostering….However, I’ve added up my food and litter bills over the last 3 months and they total $706! The foster organization can supply the food and litter but I’ve opted to buy my own and mark it off on my taxes. I may have to rethink this for 2015.

I’ve decided to put laminate wood or tile in the small downstairs bedroom rather than carpet. Does anyone have any advice about flooring options? Is real hardwood better or real tile?

I am thinking of my list…

  52. Barb, Maggie and Lucy
    5:48 pm on December 31st, 2014

I will be quietly celebrating with you tonight and will join you at 9:00 Eastern. I did not have any personal sorrows or losses this year, but many of my friends did, so I will be sending up prayers for 2015 to be a good year for all of us.

I have very positive feeling about 2015 being a good year. 5 is my favorite number, and also I will turn 70 during the year, which I feel is a major achievement.

I am all set with my pickled herring for tonight and the pork, sauerkraut and Hoppin John for tomorrow. I found out today, when looking up Hoppin’ John, that the same food served on Jan 2nd is called Skippin’ Jenny.

  53. Barb, Maggie and Lucy
    5:52 pm on December 31st, 2014

I love the look of real hardwood, but I have found from past experience that a good grade of laminate holds up better. Hardwood can be refinished, laminate can not; however, laminate is harder and holds up better to doggy nails. Also cleaner than carpet if there are messes. I have laminate and area rugs which I think are easy to keep clean.

  54. Herd of Hounds
    6:01 pm on December 31st, 2014

Hobbit, we have hardwood and tile. Tile is cold, hard to stand on and cleans up very easily. The hardwood needs to be refinished periodically. Carpet is a dirt magnet.

Barb, Maggie & Lucy: I’ll bring some salmon bon bons and brie with some fresh fruit. I just burnt a few slips of paper.

Howdy! The ‘rents are back home from their beer and dinner pairing. They said the food was delish. The 90-minute IPA was by far their fave, along with the crustini and brisket course it was paired with.
Pop started up a fire in the outdoor firepit, and each slip was read and pause was given. The bad followed by the good. All feels right with the world, and we are all feeling very good about 2015.

Rio: You could lovingly fold the piece of paper, seal it with a lick and hold it close to your heart forever and ever.

Doc helped our Lady burn tiny pieces of paper earlier. Now, one of them is napping.

Staff: We meant to tell you thank you from the bottom of our outlaw hearts for championing the Shake the Bootie compaign. It means the world to us. What color will the booties be? We have it on good authority that the Giant ordered green booties.

Rio, They have sung together before. They have an album out and are doing a concert. Believe it or not, they sound wonderful together. She is far out at time, but very talented.

    Dear Rio,
I am sorry about the pillow. It was a personal request from Alice and right now she needs all the cheering up she can get. She said if you had the pillow she would laugh for a week.

She has only been growling lately so I just had to give in.

After the Turtleman and his wife left (after skunking us at cards) I went out and took pictures of the luminaries. I did interupt the card game at 8 (our time) and burn up 2014.

I also added some sage to the luminaries and hope that helps with clearing out 2014.

You guys are high up on my list of good things from 2014.

Andrea, Thanks for the pictures of River with his family. What a cute kid he is.

My those pillows look nice by the tree. I hope nothing happens to them tonight. Maybe Rio’s friend should put them up on a shelf or someplace safe…not that anything would happen. Cough cough.

    Just saying!

Still raining here. So the neighborhood street and sidewalks have water on top of ice. It will freeze tonight into one big skating rink. Arrgh! Will probably stay home tomorrow.

Let’s hope and plan and make 2015 bigger and better…Take care.

B, M and L–thanks for posting the encouraging note to prepare for “our” year. also agree with you and HOH about l) laminate; and 2) tile (although cleaning the grout is a pain).
I did burn, but fell asleep watching Dr. Who. Now preparing to meditate, then leave for an attempt at Mt. Hollywood (no–the sign is on Mt. Lee, but adjacent, as the realtors say).
