Happy Columbus Day
Even if we’re not totally happy with Columbus himself. But a holiday is always nice! Even though Spence will be working away.
Still no uploading to the Friends gallery at this time. Once upon a time we went to the moon.

Greetings!
I know I will not be the first, since HOH holds the record.
I have my own opinions on Columbus, and what it is supposed to be his day, but since I did not sleep well last night, I will not step up on my soapbox.
It is head shrinking day today. I have a feeling many Kleenex will be used. Kleenex were used last night at bedtime. It is also laundry day.
Staff: You, the real Sparkles, and the embroidery were all lovely. You still are lovely.
I am reading “The Beast,” by Faye Kellerman. It is part of the Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus series. Has anyone else read them?
Good day to all!
I hope Nanasan makes it safely home.
8:57 am on October 13th, 2014
Good morning Rose. How did you beat HOH for the first post?
Happy holiday to all. However, this is a work day for Barb. She is filling in for Nicole who has kids off school today. Going to be stormy here this afternoon, so it is an indoor day anyway.
Diane, yes those were beets on my plate last night. They are from my organic garden and are delicious. I boil them, skin on. That keeps all the color in, and then I peel them and add butter and a little salt. They are wonderful that way. Pickled beets – yuck!
9:07 am on October 13th, 2014
Good morning Wose and B M and L:
I love pickled beets. Can’t help it. My grandma, mom, and I would do the whole process together, so I suppose it brings back good memories. The smell? Gah.
Wose: Just imagine one of us sitting and holding your hand today. Maybe that would help.
Dianne checked in. She has been busy.
Hope MPM is sprung from the Minneapolis airport soon.
Rainy here today.
9:07 am on October 13th, 2014
Good morning Wose, B&M&L and everyone. Good to hear from DianeC and great news about Conan. Mom signed Darah Thea up for a pawaitive behavior class. No choke chain and pawsitive reinforcement (does that meat treats?). They start in 2 weeks.
Columbus day???? Never celebrated it in CA and now every day is a holiday š
Have a Columbus Monday.
9:09 am on October 13th, 2014
B’sB, we must be twins, poosting at the same time š
9:15 am on October 13th, 2014
HOH: We’re Twins!
9:20 am on October 13th, 2014
Yes, we were happy to hear about Conan too. Dogs usually are better for groomers than they are for the people that live with them.
Rose, we hope you make it through the day sans tears, or if not, then hope no one throws a box of tissues at you.
Now, off for a day at the office. John doesn’t come in on Mondays (or Fridays), so Barb will be sitting there all alone. This week he is taking Thursday off too, to go golfing. What a tough job he has! BBML

Perhaps the technology for fixing the problem with blog pictures is more difficult than the technology for landing on the moon.
Good morning all.
9:35 am on October 13th, 2014
We are amazed that mom can even turn the ipaw on so she NADA, zip, zilch about things technical. Like she says, it might be rocket surgery or brain science.
10:36 am on October 13th, 2014
Columbus!…He does not look like a happy-camper…grunt!…Maybe he just ate some pickled beets…gag!
10:49 am on October 13th, 2014
Our blog software is from 2006 or earlier. A few years ago Mike Baker gave us a new facebooklike software that wasn’t sequential like the way we use the blog. We complained loudly so he put us back on the older version. That’s why the blog still uses the old dates for daylight saving time.
It looks like some operating system upgrade is now rendering our FOC non-functional.
10:57 am on October 13th, 2014
Outdated!…The blog software is probably not compatible with the newer browsers…sniff!…I feel a complete over-haul coming down the pipe…grunt!
11:02 am on October 13th, 2014
Good morning all–However we feel about Signor Columbus, nice to have a holiday, although my employers won’t be observing it. 1 hr 45 in, 1 hr 35 teaching, 1 hr 45 back (I guess I could drive, since there should be less traffic, but then I can’t sit on the train and feel all cosmopolitan and read the paper).
Wose–I wish you a tearless session today and all days to come. The husband was a big fan of the Decker/Lazarus series, and I enjoyed the couple that I read.
Barb–Sorry you don’t like pickled beets–I’ll eat them any way BUT Harvard (truly yuck). Ditto for Rio (but I’m impressed that you’ve tried them–the four-leggeds around here often won’t even try vegetables).
HOH–I hope Darah Thea enjoys her training. Does she get treats or a certificate to serve as an incentive for completion?
I don’t really understand most of the discussions about technology, but I do love it when people get passionate about food (I once had a roommate who would get apoplectic about poor, blameless oatmeal! Called it “bloatmeal”)
Have a wonderful day, all–I’m off to disseminate wisdom and knowledge just in case anyone’s listening…
11:07 am on October 13th, 2014
WAy to go Conan. Who’s a good boy!
A Catty sent me a pumpkin cookie recipe to try with my butternut squash. That is my goal for today.
Maybe some quilting too. But first I must check snowhookshakeyourbootie.com to see if there are any donations sent in…
BBL
PS There is up to 215 bootie bucks available for matching. Whatever amount you send in will be doubled! Whoo HOOO. So check your treatie monies and see if any are free to bootie a paw or two. Each dollar buys one bootie. 2 dollars, matched, will bootie one dog for one leg of the Iditarod.

In the name of all Indigenous Nations, I hereby claim this land as belonging to the People.
And I did it not by being wrong, getting lost, and thinking I am in another country, nor whilst doing in all on someone else’s dime.
So I wish you all a Happy Native Americans Are Still Here Day!

Rio is correct! Happy Thanksgiving, Dawson!
11:32 am on October 13th, 2014
Tupper’s Mama, thank you for that link. Oh, oh, Blondie is on mom’s shiitake list this morning. She opened the lovely wolf/minkee pillowcase that Staff made and shredded the pillow. Thank dog the case survived. Mom cannot post fotos since the 8.0 update š Looked like an explosion!

We wonder if the Shake Your Bootie passed its test?
(See, Bee – we DO get the “its vs. it’s” thing…….right?)
11:49 am on October 13th, 2014
Hey, Jem fans!!! Philip posted this on facebook!
“Beautiful training run today! It was pretty muddy, so the dogs were having to work hard to pull through the muck, but they did a great job! AND… Another dog had his first shot at lead! Jem, an Iditarod veteran, led the team for the very first time today. He did a very solid job and can expect to have more time in lead soon!!”
11:50 am on October 13th, 2014
This wasn’t mentioned on the blog but I saw it on Facebookie and thought you might like to see it too. Snowhook vaccinates a few dogs…

Happy Thanksgiving!
If I have a Columbus Monday, does that mean I may get lost?
DianeC: Hoorah for Conan and the Batherian!
T&G: Woof!

WOOF!
12:17 pm on October 13th, 2014
Sharon, How about this…

Who’s a BAD doggie?
12:48 pm on October 13th, 2014
Stover, Oh, lol, That is a good one about technology.
I agree with what Tupper’s mum said about Columbus Day.
Diane, Good to hear from you and glad Conan is less stressed now about the groomer. (whispering) Conan, I recommend kicking the heck out of the groomer.
Happy Canadian Thanksgiving Day to Dawson! Since I am a citizen of both Canada and the USA mom should be cooking me a Thanksgiving dinner today. She isn’t.
1:14 pm on October 13th, 2014
Dawson! Conan and the Batherian! Snort!
I am a Jem fan! Who’s a lead boy, Jem? You are.
1:15 pm on October 13th, 2014
Starvin’!…All this talk of Thanksgiving dinner is making me hungry as Bear!…snort!…Now I am wondering how Nanason is doing. She has not sent me any messages on my little go-phone today…sniff!
1:18 pm on October 13th, 2014
I hope Nana still isn’t stranded in that city that I can’t spell without looking it up.
1:31 pm on October 13th, 2014
Way to go, Jem of the big nose. Mom is so proud of that boy! He is one of her favorites.
Barb, mom cannot believe that some folk don’t eat shrimp! Yum! That and crawfish are some of our favorites. And your plating looked great.
1:37 pm on October 13th, 2014
Dawson!…My friend is having technical difficulties at the busy-place and wants to know if you received her emails…snort!…She should use SDD’s like we do and then she would have no problems….grunt!
1:37 pm on October 13th, 2014
We are still drooling over Barb’s dinner plate. Mom is too.
Dawson is always the funniest person we know! Conan and the Batherian is a classic. Heh! Speaking of which: Good job, Conan! Who’s a good dog?
Staff! Who did that destruction?
1:45 pm on October 13th, 2014
I love beets, pickled or fresh, but my favorite is beet greens! Agree with BooBear on the delish dish last night. I love shrimp, too.
Yeep! If Nana is stranded, she should call 800-Turtleman!
Jem!
Congratulations to Jem on moving up in the team!
1:45 pm on October 13th, 2014
Destruction!…That mess definitely has Alice’s signature all over it…snort!
2:09 pm on October 13th, 2014
Rio, no blaming Alice for that. Mom sent a foto of complete anihilation (?) of a pillow to Staff. Blondie took the pillow out of the case Staff made (wolf and soft stuff pattern) then shredded the pillow. Since than she has decimated 2 kitchen towels and mom’s nighty. Someone here is having quite the destructive puppy day, yes she is!
NOTICE: Small blonde mixed breed puppy desperately seeking an understanding home…quick before mom gets really put out! She says I an the 2nd or 3rd best chewer she has ever had. High praise indeed.
2:11 pm on October 13th, 2014
Staff, thank you for the evidence. Mom has purchased replacement pillow, sheets and bedspread. Silly she didn’t know about the tea towels and nighty when she went shoipping. Perhaps she should puppy sit (on) for a while.
2:14 pm on October 13th, 2014
Siber H. We think you are referring to the “no place” cities: Indian no place, Ann no place and Minnie and no place. If there are other no places, we’d like to know (place)!
2:32 pm on October 13th, 2014
HOH, I can’t spell any of them.
2:39 pm on October 13th, 2014

3:20 pm on October 13th, 2014
Checkpoints! This is fantastic! We are doing so good!
3:24 pm on October 13th, 2014
(Blondie, the pup with a bad reputation) Oops, I think I may have overstepped something today. The pillow was delish, the nighty so silky, the tea towels, a great chaser! Mom seemd smoked though when I grabbed the wolf throw and headed for the yard. She made the awful buzzer noise and rattled a bottle of rocks at me. I’m just having a fun day. Why can’t 2 leggers understand that. Cripes, I’m just gnawing on things. Puppes gotta teathe.
3:26 pm on October 13th, 2014
Sharon the evil, vicious dog mom here: if she teathes on too much more in one day, I’m going to loose it. Perhaps the rotten Kats can find a Blondie size box and we can ship her to Timbuktu…C.O.D.
4:15 pm on October 13th, 2014
Checkpoint Opportunity!
A certain curly-tailed member of the Nation Within A Nation (NWAN), or two, do not want me to rest today. They have offered matching funds, then somebody matched the matchers, then another somebody half matched the matcher of the matchers…oh dog, I’m confused. Point is, there are matching funds available right now…and several of the checkpoints are very close to being fully funded!
SiberH: Checkpoint Central say we are in excellent shape! A-1!
4:21 pm on October 13th, 2014
Making pumpkin soup and grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner with our vegetarian friend, Bill the Drummer.
Blondie – tell your mom to get you a kong, stuff it with peanut butter and freeze it. That will help your little puppy teething teeth.
4:21 pm on October 13th, 2014
Wowser, mom just went outside to feed the sushi and the wind is gusting so strongly (note the -ly adverb) she almost got blown over! Front coming this way…STORM. We need to guard the mommy dog. Hope dinner happens before the boomers. Those can put us right off our food, oh yes they can.
4:25 pm on October 13th, 2014
Oh, Bill the Drummer, you are in for a treat. Wish we could join you. Dinner at your house sounds great…WAIT, Spongetta just said turkey rice soup and grilled cheese. We are living the high life!
4:34 pm on October 13th, 2014
Slurp, slobber, belch, glug!
4:47 pm on October 13th, 2014
Sheesh!
HOH: I washungry… until 4:34, gulp!
4:48 pm on October 13th, 2014
For those of you not facebookie types….Rebecca has just announced on fb that the dog truck has now crossed the Rainbow Bridge….
4:50 pm on October 13th, 2014
Truck!…OH NO!…gasp!
4:55 pm on October 13th, 2014
Whatever will we do? Truckie fund?
5:14 pm on October 13th, 2014
That poor truck has been back and forth over the bridge on an annual basis for several years now. So this time it’s final, is it?
5:22 pm on October 13th, 2014
The truck issue is seerious. Snowhook want to put 2 teams into the race this year. We need to strategize. We need to think. We need a brain!
5:23 pm on October 13th, 2014
R.I.P. Dog Truck
You served Snowhook well and faithfully.
sob
5:25 pm on October 13th, 2014
Poor truck. Sob
HOH, Your uncouth post reminded Barb of a restaurant/bar near where she lived in the country. It was called The Slurp and Burp. Barb refused to go there. She is much too dignified. LOL
5:28 pm on October 13th, 2014
Well, the DDD had friends who had a restaurant called the G&H. Obviously initials but we idjits called it the gag and heave.
5:29 pm on October 13th, 2014
Unbelievable!…They have to have a truck to haul the team to the race…grunt!….This is really bad news…sniffle!
5:43 pm on October 13th, 2014
Stover!…FYI… The M-an B-oo-ker awards will be streamed live by BBC Arts online http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts from 9.45pm….snort!…London is 7 hours ahead of my time so 6 hours your time.
5:44 pm on October 13th, 2014
It sounds like the truck has used up all of its nine lives and more. Strategies? Should I sell pretzels on the street corner? Oh, my.
5:45 pm on October 13th, 2014
Drat!…I don’t think we here in the US will be able to watch it though…sniff!
5:46 pm on October 13th, 2014
It is our theory that the best thing we can do about the truck at this time is to get all checkpoints funded, booties paid for, and then start sponsoring dogs. More on that after the checkpoint and bootie fund drives have been completed.
6:00 pm on October 13th, 2014
O’Howlers: Agreed!
7:02 pm on October 13th, 2014
Thank you Rio.
7:43 pm on October 13th, 2014

Rohn checkpoint is fully funded for Cherokee!</em
This mahogany headed Siber will be bringing lots of experience to the race!
Go Snowhook!
So now there are 4 checkpoints open for donations: Yentna for Zoe & Family, Iditarod for Kats Rule!, Anvik for Rick and Truman, and Nome for Giant and Pixie.
And 5 checkpoints that are available: Finger Lake, Takotna, Graying, Kaltag and Golovin (pending the choice of one of the 5 for Spencer Quinn).
WhoooHoooo! Go Snowhook!

Happy Thanksgiving, Dawson!
Tupper’s Mama–Your menu sounds perfect to me–in fact I’m now thinking of quesadillas with avocado for my dinner(and I’m admiring the necklaces right this second).
Blondie–Um, your Mom might not be thinking that was as much fun as you did. Maybe you should consider being a very very good girl for the rest of the evening.
Siber-H–I think Conan really really likes Mr. Larry who is now his stylist. Maybe all he needed was a stylist all along.
8:46 pm on October 13th, 2014
Wow!…Wow!Wow!Wow!…WoooooHooooo!….Everything helps, every little bit. Remember even small donations are going to get matched and become substantial donations!…snort!snort!
Prizes!…What great prizes!…Wow!Wow!
8:58 pm on October 13th, 2014
I know Rio. I want that necklace so bad, but I know the secret numbers.
Amalia, I would like to buy a necklace like that one. I LOVE those colors. Ahem. Could you SDD me a price please??? I am begging you here. sniffle snort.
9:20 pm on October 13th, 2014
Those are beautiful prizes. They would do well in an auction.
9:23 pm on October 13th, 2014
So….what would it cost to replace the engine in the truck vs a whole new or used truck? If everything else is ok (frame, bed, seats), perhaps just focusing on replacing the engine is more doable. Expensive, yes but less than an entire truck????
9:27 pm on October 13th, 2014
Wow, we are hot tonight! We love all of the necklaces. The silver on the one Staff likes so much is similar to part of the key chain that we use. It was sent by A & L in honor of Sasha and Moonman when AJ was running the Iditarod. Was it 2 years ago?
9:30 pm on October 13th, 2014
Siber – there may be a few surprises at auction time.
Just sayin’
And we will be getting our act together and mailing out the first two prizes tomorrow. Promise. Now, if someone should win a prize tonight, it could be in the mail then too….
Staff – the just might be an SDD in your mailbox soon too.
9:36 pm on October 13th, 2014
SiberH!…Did the game get rained out or sumthing?…grunt!…I can’t find it anywhere…sniff!
9:44 pm on October 13th, 2014
Rose, I have read and enjoyed the series of which you spoke. I just read a stand-alone Faye Kellerman, “Moon Music” not so much. Too strange.
9:48 pm on October 13th, 2014
I’m watching an old Yankees/Red Sox game, currently tied 4 – 4 in the 12th.
9:53 pm on October 13th, 2014
I see that my moderated post (8:38)is now up. Sorry for the Double Dawson but I replaced it after it was moderated (because I put a photo and a link in it).
Obviously Mike Baker noticed a loyal poster was being moderated and he corrected it ASAP!
9:53 pm on October 13th, 2014
Rio is right, Columbus does look a bit like he is experiencing heartburn in the portrait.
We are saying good night. Another day of work tomorrow. Barb is not used to two days back to back, so we are turning in early.
Wish we had a good book to read in bed. Has anyone read the new Grisham, Grey Mountain, or Jodi Picoult’s Leaving Time?
9:54 pm on October 13th, 2014
Rio, There is no game tonight. Tomorrow I will let you know the time and channel.
10:01 pm on October 13th, 2014
Hmmmm!…On the schedule someone printed out says there is a game tonight…grump!…I swear.
Dawson!…How many matching dollars do you still have for the checkpoint fund?…grunt!
10:08 pm on October 13th, 2014
Rio, Tomorrow’s game will be at 2 pm our time on FS1.
My newspaper actually listed this game in advance.
10:11 pm on October 13th, 2014
Checkpoint Update!
Anvikcheckpoint for Rick and Truman is now fully funded! Thanks to many generous donations, Rick and Truman now have a front row seat to Iditarod 2015!
Due to matching funds donors out donating regular donors we still have almost 200. in matching funds! You guys are amazing! Thanks to all of you!
10:23 pm on October 13th, 2014
I love those matching donors. Due to them we can announce a winner of Golinka’s beautiful necklace. A plucky plunderer donated an amount that was then matched by some already promised matching funds. This time is was the matcher whose money hit the magic number which was….
ta-da!!!Number 654.
A notice will go out the winner and to Golinka. If the winner allows me to annouce the name I will. Or the smart and savvy winner could just announce it herself.
The Bootie fund now stands at 675.00 AND we have 165 left available to match any donations coming in.
SDD’s going out…
10:25 pm on October 13th, 2014
Oh yeah…

Exciting!…This is all so exciting!…Woooooo!…Yeeeee!Haaaaa!
11:12 pm on October 13th, 2014

Like Dawson said, our dog truck has been crossing back and forth across the Bridge for quite some time. AJ has avoided trucking to train as much as he would like because the truck is unreliable. It is one thing to have car problems when it is just you, but it is completely different to be broken down with a dog team on paw. Last year we spent more on repairs than we did to buy the truck in the first place.
After calls to a pawful of mechanics today, it was clear that the cost of repairs is more than the truck is worth. The dog truck is worth a few thousand. To get it running is estimated to be $3k-$5k, and to replace the engine is $9k. Our Lady says it is never a good sign when mechanics laugh or are get really quiet.
More on our Lady. She hasn’t been feeling tip nor top lately, but has been thinking of each of youse. She drove to work today stressed about the dog truck. Yet, she paused chewing the insides of her cheeks from stress and replaced the knot in her stomach with gratitude for your friendship. The Giant feels the same way. As they were talking tonight, he jumped on this here blog. He became really silent and then said, “I know it’s just a dog truck, but I’m touched.” He got silent again. You make our stresses less with your laughter, your friendship and support. Thank youse.
As we figure out our dog truck situation, one thing is clear—we will plunder on!
