Happy Columbus Day
“What to make of this guy?” says Spence.
“Could have been better,” says Admin. “Could have been worse. Weren’t Cortes and Pizarro worse? Most of it’s just historical inevitability.”
“Those twin conquistador obsessions – gold and conversions – are off-putting,” Spence says.
“Now you’re sounding like Bernie.”
“Is that a surprise?”
Welcome Dooly, Sparky, Dude (maybe Dooly again?) and cat buddy, Bella.

I am not surprised and probably sound like Bernie, myself!
So showing some ignorance . . .
For quite awhile on Columbus Day I would notice parades. Pulaski Parades . . .
For years I would just wonder what group was putting on the Columbus Day Parade because I had never heard of a group called the Pulaskies.
Driving down to the Royals’ Mum’s (*&&$%%& Art Show, I asked my sister, “What do the Pulaskies have to do with Columbus?”
She said, “Dog, am I glad you asked me and not someone else because I didn’t know either and was given a lecture on the whole thing and why I should know and how terrible it was that I didn’t.”
Now should I tell you guys? Or does someone already know?
Good morning All!
9:16 am on October 10th, 2011
Good morning, y’all! It’s funny that Samantha has a dog she’s trying to return home — so do we! When we went for our walk in the park Saturday night, there was another dog who followed us home (we just live across the street). He’s a little skinny, so Dad got him some food and water and put a blanket down for him. He was still here yesterday, so Dad put up a couple of signs, but nobody called. He’s wearing a collar, but there aren’t any tags on it, so we don’t know if he’s missing from home, or if somebody dropped him off in the park. (Missy and Buford joined our family when Dad and my boy found them in a plastic bag in the park.) He’s a cute little fella — about my size, but still kind of puppyish — I played with him yesterday. Maggie likes him, too, but Addison just keeps growling at him.
Mom’s going to take his picture to the animal shelter and maybe some v-e-t’s offices (although Dad says since he doesn’t have a rabies tag and he’s still intact — whatever that means — he may not have visited the v-e-t). She keeps telling Dad and my girl not to get too attached to him, but my girl has already named him Jack. Sigh. I don’t know if I’ll ever get to be an only pup again!
9:30 am on October 10th, 2011
KirbyT: AJ has said the same thing to me before: Don’t get attached. Snort. My response is always the same: Too late.
Melanie: I snigglefritzed quite a bit last night when I thought of the art show, too.
9:34 am on October 10th, 2011
I know in Chicago they have Roman Pulaski Day and have streets named after him. Wasn’t he a Polish General? Clue us in Melanie.
Hope Royal’s Mum has a better day. With those entry fees she would have to sell 3 pieces just to cover the booth expense. Wow! Some of the comments she repeated yesterday were awful.
Kirby, Jack landed in a happy place! Your folks are good people!
Maybe his people dropped him at the dog park because they “wanted to travel”.
9:37 am on October 10th, 2011
Kirby, you may really like to have Jack around – not like Those Girls. Maybe Jack could stay with you and not be in the laundry room. You two could rule the house.
9:54 am on October 10th, 2011
I wonder how the conquistadors condoned such opposite obsessions.
Good morning all. Off to school.
9:55 am on October 10th, 2011
KO we have our facts mixed up. Casimir Pulaski was the Polish general who served under George Washington. Roman Pulanski is the film producer. Jeeze!
9:56 am on October 10th, 2011
KO should have been OK. We should proof better before sending!
9:59 am on October 10th, 2011
Columbus!… My friend says Columbus Day always brings back grade school memories of being in plays about Columbus discovering America and The Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock. …sniff!….She usually played the Rock. ….wuffle!
9:59 am on October 10th, 2011
Good Morning Liz!
Happy Thanksgiving Dawson!
Happy Columbus Day Everyone!
BBL after reading last posts.
9:59 am on October 10th, 2011
Melanie: I think you’re going to have to tell us — just don’t lecture!!!
10:02 am on October 10th, 2011
Today!…. I think today should be Golinka Day!….wooooo!…. And all the Plunderers should have a great big party. Who wants to bring food?….heh!
10:23 am on October 10th, 2011
Gold!….The conversation between Admin and Spence reminded me of the ending of Dog Who….heh!…What a great ending. On one paw it was very frustrating, but on the other paw it was very very entertaining….chorkel!
10:33 am on October 10th, 2011
Golinka Day!!! We are in!
Royals’ Mum: Our heart is breaking over your posts of yesterday. All we can say is, those incredibly crass, stupid people that came to that art show DO NOT DESERVE to own your beautiful, one of a kind pieces! All of the talented, creative artists at that show must be wondering where this flock of idiots came from.
Sending big hugs your way and hoping for a better day.
10:44 am on October 10th, 2011
Melanie – We also liked your photo of Amalia at work. She’s left handed.
10:53 am on October 10th, 2011
We didn’t notice that till you pointed it out Molly. Barb is left handed too. Are you?
We are in for the party. Maybe it should be a surprise party for the Royals when they arrive home. They will need some cheering up after dealing with all the goofuses out there. What should we bring?
10:54 am on October 10th, 2011
Barb and MagPie are correct!
And here’s more information than you ever wanted to know about him!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casimir_Pulaski
10:55 am on October 10th, 2011
Maybe Wolfie can blurr by, or Dawson can pick us up in the private plane!
11:14 am on October 10th, 2011
We can add Coronado to the list of conquistadors behaving very badly in the Americas. We live not very far from where he and his troops and followers had a winter camp.
We are in for Golinka Day. Food? Did someone mention food?
Kirby, The little doggy sounds like a nice guy. You may have a new little brother. Keep us posted.
11:29 am on October 10th, 2011
I just called The Royals’ Mum and told her about Golinka Day! She said, “Bless, Riö’s little heart!”
Also we were trying to figure out how to get people to buy.
1. Franklin sitting in the booth. If you want to pet the big dog you got to pay the big bucks!
2. Bella bringing down the puppies. That will soften these idiots up!
11:32 am on October 10th, 2011
We won’t be here for much of Golinka Day — Mom just ran some errands, and now she has to leave for work — but we’re up for it! Stupid people anyway! Especially the one who bragged about making the beautiful poster — matching her couch, no less!
Mom thinks she’s in trouble. When she left just now to do her errands, Jack was sitting in the backyard looking at her — with his left ear standing straight up and his right ear flopped over. She says he’s like a mirror image of me (only brown instead of black) almost like he was watching me and practicing. Pondering here. Did I let it slip that Mom fell in love with me when I did that?
12:03 pm on October 10th, 2011
I’m up for a party!
12:22 pm on October 10th, 2011
Good Afternoon!
First day at my new job and cubicle. I have my Iditarod Patch in a place of honor. I smile whenever I look at it, and it reminds me of youse guys!
RM: You art is beautiful. It just can’t be helped that some people has no class, or an eye for art.
Rio: Your friends gift tags are gorgeous. I’d buy some (only I wouldn’t give them away!).
HAPPY GOLINKA DAY!!!!
12:31 pm on October 10th, 2011
Hey all! Golinka Day party is a great idea! Mom & Pop are at work, but we Howlers and Buddy and T.C. have unlimited access to the kitchen and the iPaw. Those people at the Art Show sound like people who are rich but not wealthy. Rich can’t buy class.
Lets try for American food (not conquistador or columbus food) to celebrate our day. We think our land would be nicer if those people had left it alone.
Kirby, congratulations on your new addition! Smooches to Jack from us!
12:36 pm on October 10th, 2011
The Pack is bringing salmon bon bons for both Kats and Dogs.
I’m bringing Chocolate bon bond because any reader of Harry Potter knows that Chocolate helps with Dementors.
12:41 pm on October 10th, 2011
HAPPY GOLINKA DAY!!!
Celebrating Our Talented Friend.
We wish we could buy Everything!
What Wonderful Gifts! Only problem
is…we would want to keep it all!!
Lots of Hugs coming your way today.
12:52 pm on October 10th, 2011
To finish up . . . I will do four now and three later.
Another Wisdom Keeper

12:56 pm on October 10th, 2011
I will bring Wild Alaskan Salmon Steaks & Twice Baked Potatoes for the Royal Mum’s Party tonight.
12:57 pm on October 10th, 2011
A different Kachina Mask and another Wisdom Keeper.

12:58 pm on October 10th, 2011
Birch Bark Woman
12:59 pm on October 10th, 2011
Four Direction Medicine Shield

1:01 pm on October 10th, 2011
I had to take a break to begin with because five of the nuts got out the door. Zo¨e used the whistle and they got into the van. She then took them for a ride down the street. When she came back Rose wouldn’t get out of the van because she wanted to be at the camp!
1:12 pm on October 10th, 2011
Woman!….My friend says she Really Really wants the Birch Bark Woman!….wooooo!….I wonder how many chew sticks it costs….wuffle!
1:26 pm on October 10th, 2011
Good morning!
Melanie: I have no idea who Pulanski is, or was.
Barb and Maggie: I do know who Roman Polanski is. Heh.
Rose: Congratulations on a new beginning.
Happy Golinka Day! I like Gus and Boo Bear’s idea of you having an online store. Give many more people a chance to see your art and buy it without having to listen to their inane remarks. I love, love, love the Wisdom Keepers.
Kirby T. You will always be one of my favorites (you all are!) but…oh…Jack needs a home (maybe).
Party?! Well, I do have to visit with the in-laws on their last day here but I think I can fly back and forth in Claude’s new plane, with the help of Dan the experienced Pilot.
30 pound turkey: Never Again. The turkey took way too long to cook, the dinner was late which upset the cook. The stuffing got burnt. The young lads were starving and went for the pecan tarts as an appetizer, which upset the diabetic (she wanted some) and led to some high-spirited conversation as to how many tarts each person had eaten. “I had negative 2”, said the one who had a possible 7! The pumpkin pie got rave reviews and after everyone was full we decided to do it again next year. But not with a 30 pounder.
1:37 pm on October 10th, 2011
We really, really like the Four Direction Medicine Shield.
I’ll bring Arctic Paws Yummy Chummies for dogs and cats and green chili stew because the Royals’ mum likes it.
Stover can bring pies!!
1:47 pm on October 10th, 2011
G&BooBear I too like your idea of an online store for the Royals’ Mum.
I think all Plunderers of the feline variety should get together and guard her booth today. I know the big dogs are on the job, but we kats can do our part too.
1:47 pm on October 10th, 2011
We are bringing corn pie, which is a PA Dutch recipe but was probably taught to them by the Native Americans who welcomed them here.
2:04 pm on October 10th, 2011
Hi everyone.
You all bring tears to our eyes and smiles to our hearts with your support. And a PARTY?!?! And a day named for us? We are so very honored.
The party sounds great. We won’t be home to do a lot of cooking for it but we can certainly bring some Crimea Liver pate. …. get it?
(sorry folks – Gilly came up with that one and she and Sage are just rolling on the floor giggling. Basil And I are just rolling our eyes)
Two more hours of show time- then begins the great fun of packing out.
We may be late to the party, but we will be there-with bells on!
(whispering- Rio, if Birch Bark Woman is still around, maybe she will wander up to the MMS later this month)
2:10 pm on October 10th, 2011
T&G Tell your mom she is the guest of honor so she isn’t suppose to bring anything…she is just suppose to go home and relax.
2:17 pm on October 10th, 2011
Tupper&Gilly: Tell that wonderful mum of yours she need not worry about cooking on this her day! Just enjoy being waited on for a change. We are adding T-Bones to the menu. Something 4-leggeds and 2 can enjoy. And a big tossed green salad.
2:28 pm on October 10th, 2011
Birch bark woman has a whole lot of character. The medicine wheel is wow! Out-of-this-world wonderful.
I’m bring some left over turkey. Heh. Can’t be wasteful, after all.
I’m going to bring some elk jerky too. The elk was harvested right in the area where I took that picture from the airplane.
2:36 pm on October 10th, 2011
Gulper and Gilly, we are serious about wanting a bear fetish. Mom probably can’t afford a big one like Melanie’s picture showed, but would love to see what u have available. Maybe u could have Melanie take some pictures and email Mom with the pictures, size and cost. And our cat sitter is buying a retirement home in Busbee, Arizonia and one of those would be a perfect Christmas gift.
We’ll come to the party, but Mom really can’t cook. We wouldn’t want anyone to get sick!
2:48 pm on October 10th, 2011
That’s Bisbee, Arizona!
2:52 pm on October 10th, 2011
Blasted iPhone! We typed Tupper, not Gulper!!!
3:02 pm on October 10th, 2011
Gus and Boo – Gilly here. Sometimes “gulper” is a PERFECT name for you know who. When we try to type it, our ipaw keeps changing it to “tipper”.
(whispering-Mama does have other sizes of bears. She will send you some pics later when she gets home. )
3:03 pm on October 10th, 2011
Gulper!….I think Gulper is the perfect name for that Corgi…heh!…Gulper and Gilly!…snort!
3:17 pm on October 10th, 2011
Tupper&Gilly: Bear Fetishes! We are very interested also. That would be fantastic to have one of your mum’s wonderful creations!
3:53 pm on October 10th, 2011
We don’t get the joke, can someone explain it to us?
Let’s see, you have beef and salmon, so maybe we should bring some fried chicken, mashed potatoes and old fashioned creamy chicken gravy, like they make down home. Mr. Redbone would like that! Oh, and some corn & bean suchtash.
3:54 pm on October 10th, 2011
I think we got it – is is Cry Me a River pate?
4:17 pm on October 10th, 2011
Thanks for figuring that out for us Maggie!
4:19 pm on October 10th, 2011
Game!…. The Tigers vs Rangers game is just about to start….woooooo!… I’m hoping I can hear it today…sniff!….So far so good!….yippee!…Go Tigers!
4:22 pm on October 10th, 2011
Well, I was hoping that the only thing the Royal’s Mum had to pack was a boatload of cash, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Dang!
I can blur by and pick anyone and everyone up! I can bring pizza!
4:34 pm on October 10th, 2011
Happy Golinka Day! Count me in for the party. I’ll be a bit late, but I’ll bring cheesecake—one for the Royals’ mum and one for the rest of us. I’ll have to leave it to Sara Lee—Golinka Day snuck up on me this year—has that ever happened to you?
Below is my Golinka Day to-do list in honor of our resident list making artist mama:
1. Buy Happy Golinka Day greeting card.
2. Write a strongly worded letter to Hallmark for not having said greeting card.
3. Clear Pancho and Lefty’s training schedule so they can take the babies to the art show and serve as added muscle for the snobby look-i-lous—if anything, they can pick some pockets just for the honor of looking at Stinky Mama’s artwork.
4. Instruct Pancho and Lefty that the pups aren’t chew toys as they pick each up by the scruff.
5. Think better of number 4.
6. Put the pups in Belle Starr’s pink backpack.
7. Convince Rose to taken in Belle Starr and Luna a bit early. The cost of blurring from AK to NY is expensive.
8. Ask Wolfie if he will accompany our first time blurrers.
9. Party with the Plunderers!
4:34 pm on October 10th, 2011
I’ve been cooking this afternoon. I made Fried Green Tomatoes!
The Chocolate Bon Bons to bring back your energy from the dementors at the show . . .
I took 12 oz of semisweet chocolate pieces and combined that with 1/3 cup whipping cream and heated it (stirring the whole time) until the chocolate was melted. Then I cooled it a bit and stirred in 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. I beat that with an electric mixer and dropped globs of it on a baking pan. Chilled it for 20 minutes, made them into balls and then rolled in Confectioners sugar. This is an adaption from “Better Home and Gardens”.
For the Salmon Bon Bons . . . I took a beaten egg combined it with 1/4 milk, added 14 ounces of salmon (bones removed) and 1/4 cup bread crumbs. Then I made balls out of that. I drizzled a bit of butter on them and baked them until they were slightly warm knowing that our four footed guests will not need them cooked.
(Not recommended for two footed).
I’m ready for tonight!
4:38 pm on October 10th, 2011
I’ll bring three pecan pies and three apple and three chocolate cream.
T&G: I would buy either of the Kachina Masks.
4:44 pm on October 10th, 2011
Wolfie: Pizza’s good. We all like the crusts! We will wait for you to pick us up!
4:55 pm on October 10th, 2011
If Alice can pick me up in her plane, I can stuff the plane full of those chips that the Royals’ mum likes and can’t buy in MA.
5:07 pm on October 10th, 2011
Freetos!…Do you mean Chili Freetos?…heh!…I can’t believe she can’t get those things in MA…sniff!
Dammit!…Texas is ahead by two already…grunt!
5:14 pm on October 10th, 2011
That’s it, Rio…chili freetos
5:29 pm on October 10th, 2011
I’m coming to the party and I’ll bring some kibble, ‘cuz that’s all that’s here – I’m at Sam’s.
The ride to get here should have been beautiful with lots of leaf colors. Last year there was an 18-mile stretch just north of Springville that was so spectacular that Mom made me drive so she could just look. (“Officer, my dog is driving the car but she hasn’t been off the leash, not even once.”) Well, I didn’t get to drive this year because the colors were all brownish and disappointing.
5:29 pm on October 10th, 2011
Luckily I just got in from an afternoon in the yard. Staff was really freaked out. She was not at all sure I would be available for jetting over to pick up Mr.Husky, but I am ready to go.
Well, maybe just a short nap and a little snack.
I hope you don’t mind that I have burrs and seeds in my lovely coat (and tail). No time to brush up.
We are bringing some canned tuna in oil. It is our fav. Delish.
Urp…Pardon me a moment……
Ahhhh, I feel much better now. I guess I shouldn’t have nibbled on that green stuff in the yard.
5:32 pm on October 10th, 2011
HOMER!….Tigers are ahead 3 ta 2!….Woooooo!
5:34 pm on October 10th, 2011
Ugh!…Alice that’s disgusting…grunt!
5:47 pm on October 10th, 2011
Well at least I didn’t fart!
5:47 pm on October 10th, 2011
The Royals’ Mum sent me these from her iPhone.
One of her turtles.

5:47 pm on October 10th, 2011
The Copper Horse

5:48 pm on October 10th, 2011
Northern Lights Bear.

5:50 pm on October 10th, 2011
Siber-H: is there an art magazine of the Southwest that might be interested in RM work?
5:54 pm on October 10th, 2011
Turtle!…Staff should buy that turtle for Turtleman Fred for Christmas…heh!
6:05 pm on October 10th, 2011
Staff was just thinking that very thing. Unfortunately the TurtleMan has put a moratorium on any new turtle decor. He claims that 257 are enough. ? Why is all I ask.
6:12 pm on October 10th, 2011
I am going to feed the parents. Then about 6:30 I should pick up Mr.Husky and his chips. I think I will bring some Queso from Pepito’s Restaurant. It is yummy to dip chips in. That and tuna ought to be good.
6:16 pm on October 10th, 2011
MOM WANTS THAT COPPER HORSE. So bad she put the caps lock on!
Wolfie, can you blur us to the party? Mom and Pop have to go to a township supervisor meeting, so they will be late. We aren’ quite sure we could handle a plane ride.
Melanie, tell us how to make fried green tomatoes. Mom loves them but never made them.
Chet posted this link on facebook. There are 100 dog books, and you can vote for your fav. We are pretty sure which will be the favorite of all the Plunderers…but there are 2 Chet & Bernie books in this list. Which one should we all pick? We can’t believe there are 100 on this list, and we have not read most of them. We need advice on which to read, in priority order.

6:19 pm on October 10th, 2011
What time does the party start?
6:30 pm on October 10th, 2011
I am looking out the window during the gloaming. It’s beautiful. There is a full moon coming over our hills. The colors are muted . . .
So I was going to put a link to “Full Moon Rising” by CCR except that is “Bad Moon Rising” and when I played it was not something that fit my mood at all.
So think this as a Full Moon Rising Song. . .

6:32 pm on October 10th, 2011
Melanie, I don’t know. I will have mom look at art magazines the next time she is in Barnes and Nobel and Hastings. Hastings is a regional chain with lots of magazines. Mom will ask around also. There is a glossy New Mexico magazine and Arizona Highways that sometimes features artists.
We do know in our hearts that the RM’s art would sell in Santa Fe, Sedonia, and places like that.
That turtle is beautiful!! Love the Northern Lights Bear! I don’t think many “animal” people attended that art show. Horsey people around here (we have lots of them) would buy that horse.
6:37 pm on October 10th, 2011
I love the turtle. I knew OleyHowler’s would want the Copper Horse. Who wouldn’t? I want all her pieces but if I had to choose just one it would be….arrrgh! Impossible!
AliceJohnson: Isn’t it fun to chase the Fall leaves around? Did you scare any fuzz-butts?
Detroit is winning but Texas is threatening. Dang Texans.
6:39 pm on October 10th, 2011
Melanie!! Amazon shows that there is a Southwest Art magazine and right beside it is an American Indian Art magazine.
6:41 pm on October 10th, 2011
Ooooooh The Northern Lights Bear!!!
O.Howlers: Besides the Chet & Bernie Mysteries, two of our favorites from that list are The Art of Racing in the Rain and Watchers.
6:57 pm on October 10th, 2011
Fellow Sibers, The Chet and Bernie mysteries, Watchers by Dean Koontz, and the two books there by Patricia B. McConnell. Patricia’s are non-fiction.
Alice, I will be at the airport at 6:30 with my mom’s truck loaded with chips.
BTW You aren’t suppose to go outside.
7:02 pm on October 10th, 2011
I WANT THE NORTHERN LIGHTS BEAR!!!
Rebecca: Can Belle, Luna, and the pups come tomorrow????
Dawson: Thanks for the congrats! First day was great!
7:15 pm on October 10th, 2011
Hey!
Where is this party anyways? In Rio’s front yard?
Me too!
I want the Northern Lights Bear!
7:22 pm on October 10th, 2011
Hey Dawson, do I see a bidding war coming? 😉
7:23 pm on October 10th, 2011
Rose: Happy to hear your first day at the new job was great. Being so close perhaps, as B.Stover has suggested, you will be able to get together for lunch with your friends.
See you at the party!
7:31 pm on October 10th, 2011
Rose: Congratulations on your first day!
7:36 pm on October 10th, 2011
Rose: I wish I’d been more fiscally responsible earlier in the year.
7:45 pm on October 10th, 2011
Rose: I’m glad your first day went well.
7:48 pm on October 10th, 2011
This ball game is getting serious. Bases loaded, 2 outs top of the 9th inning…Ohhhhhhhh! Almost fumbled the fly but (carpola!) he hung on. Still tied.
7:51 pm on October 10th, 2011
Hi Masquers, you and B. are right. In fact, a lot of people stopped by to see me, and I walked over to the cafeteria with my friend, just like every day. I have to skip thee party, because it will keep me up way past my bedtime, but I will be there in spirit.
Melanie: Thanks!
Dawson: I’m going to bust open my piggy bank right now!
Party Hardy All!!!!
7:55 pm on October 10th, 2011
B: Thanks! Enjoy your evening!
8:14 pm on October 10th, 2011
Thanks Rose. Actually I’m exhausted so I think I’ll go read and then sleep.
Good night all.
8:48 pm on October 10th, 2011
Nelson Cruz!!!!! Walk-of home run. Rangers!!!!!!
8:49 pm on October 10th, 2011
Rangers Win!!! 11th inning walk off Grand Slam Home Run!
WOO WOO Macy and Gus&Boobear where are you!!!!
8:51 pm on October 10th, 2011
WOO HOO There you are Macy!!
8:57 pm on October 10th, 2011
Gah!….I can’t believe the Rangers are up two games….sniff!….Tigers, what happened?….sob!
Party!… I can’t go to the party because I can’t leave my yard unless I have my little halter and leash on….sniff!….Oh, and she has to be with me to carry my tags…wuffle!…I really wanted to Hot Wings. Was anybody going to make Hot Wings….snort!
8:59 pm on October 10th, 2011
Cardinals!…At least the Cardinals are winning by 4 ta Zero!…heh!….We are loving that!….Woooooo!
9:07 pm on October 10th, 2011
Party Party Party!!!!
Wahooooo – the show is over, we are all packed out, we (finally) made enough sales to at least recover our booth fee AND we made a whole $15 profit….except that Mama got take out food for the past couple of nights, and they got a snack at the show, and….
oh well. As Mama says, they didn’t loose their shirts, but they are definatly sleeveless.
So now, we are here to party and dance and EAT!!! Someone throw one of those steaks on the grill for us. We’re gonna dig into the chili fritos and queso…mmmmmmm! Alice may not be the only one “urping” tonight.
When we get to the entertainment part of the evening, Mama collected some real doozies of comments from people today…
9:13 pm on October 10th, 2011
The Pack has arrived and have dragged me along. Literally . . .
I sure wish we had all gone around that tree instead of Franklin going around one way and everyone around the other. I’m okay though! Sort of! Okay, my two black eyes should go down soon. Where’s that steak? Raw, please and just let me slap it on my face.
Oh, Here are the two kinds of bon bons. And I brought sleeveless tee shirts for us all!

(Mac picked them out)

Melanie, Mom has a friend who moved to New Mexico to edit a magazine. She thinks its an art magazine. She will see if she can make contact with her.

Thank you to the Patchwork Plunderers who made the Iditarod patches not only a thing of beauty, but a reality.
Milk Carton Pups
“Anything?” I asked already knowing the answer. He had come back empty handed and was not followed by our dog Coach as I had hoped.
He shook his head. I had alerted him not more than thirty minutes earlier, at the beginning of my evening chores of the problem. Coach, a two year-old yearling named for my father and our five puppies were missing. The gate to the puppy pen had been pushed open, and the pen sat empty. The pups were just eight weeks old, already a handful and adept at causing joy, havoc and now worry.
We arrived home from our day jobs and I doffed my city clothes, slacks and high heels for the uniform of my second full-time job. The insulated bibs and bunny boots along with heavy parka were donned every night before I tended to my evening dog chores. I made my way to the kennel to feed, water, scoop and love, the same routine AJ performed in the morning. I knew something was wrong.
Once the population of our kennel increased beyond 1.5 sled dogs—Tenzing being my first sled-dog and Luna, a reluctant sled dog at best—I had the practice of making mental count of dogs and pups each time I entered the kennel. We were down one dog and five pups.
Our plan was simple: find the dogs and find the pups. AJ took to the snowmachine, standing on one runner with his left leg, his right leg resting on the seat. He could see better from this height, rather than sitting. As I remained in the kennel, calling for Coach and looking in each of the dog houses, I could hear AJ’s calls for the same from a distance. With hope I had asked my simple question, “Anything?” and with the candid manner he took to addressing any problem, he shook his head.
“We’ll continue to look, but first, let’s get the rest of the dogs fed.” He knew my panic was tipping a toe over the edge of heartache. He was practical with his instructions; not only would the dogs get fed, a must-do twice a day, but it would distract me and force my focus elsewhere. “Bella,” an endearment he bestowed upon me shortly after our first date and shortly before proposing, “It will be alright. We’ll find them.” Despite the dropping temperatures, and the darkening ink of the early evening winter skies, I believed him. It isn’t in his nature to give me false hope and delay disappointment that he believe is bound to come.
Without asking, I knew he would help me with my evening chores. Tending to the dogs would distract us both, even for a short while. While I made my way to the dog barn to fill the feed bucket, only pausing to stroke the head of dogs that lined my path, AJ made his way to the house to fetch warm water. “Coach! Coach!” his low voice bellowed.
The heads of Tenzing, Natty, Willie, Bishop, Savannah had been stroked and soft words spoken to each, “Have you seen our bud? The pups?” No comment. The pups and Coach held my heart at the moment just as they always did, and the worry increased. I couldn’t bear the thought of the pups and Coach alone and away. I stepped into the dog barn. I had to believe AJ—It will be alright. We’ll find them.
Entering the dog barn in nothing but darkness, by instinct and practice, my right mittened hand found the light switch in the dog barn, and with it my heart found relief. “AJ! AJ!”
“What? What is it?” I heard him place the buckets filled with forty pounds of water in the snow and step behind me. I pointed with my left hand, clad in a bright colored knit glove—few things match when you have a dog team. The laugh growled in his throat, “I told you it would be alright.”
As if to quiet us, Coach looked up from where he lay in the blue sled bag in my first dog sled. Shhh. I just got them down. Curled around him, and he around them lay the five milk carton pups. Sleeping.
Each evening of the next several nights an empty dog house and an even emptier puppy pen greeted us upon our arrival home. The sled bag of my first dog sled, however was not empty.

I’ll have one of those salmon bon bons, please.
Melanie: Those sleeveless shirts are quite festive!
Nice poem, Rio.

Wow . . . Now my eyes really hurt!
9:39 pm on October 10th, 2011
Rebecca, hold on i have to wipe away the steak juice. I give up on that. I’ll just have swollen eyes. More so because of your beautiful story.
Having pups disappear is heart in your throat time. I’m so glad you had Coach (though he led them astray) and AJ.
9:40 pm on October 10th, 2011
SnowBella: Your wonderful story brought tears to my eyes.
9:40 pm on October 10th, 2011
Awww!…snuffle!…I knew those pups would be okay. I knew it all along…sniffle!
9:42 pm on October 10th, 2011
Tupper & Gilly please tell your Mom that those silly people don’t know great art when they see it! My Mom had a disappointing sales day at one place and then went on to sell her quilts for high prices at other places. Tell you Mom not to give up and do what she loves. Wookie the Official Quilt Tester
9:44 pm on October 10th, 2011
That’s a beautiful story, Rebecca. Thank You. I can just picture Coach and the puppies curled up together in the sled bag.
9:45 pm on October 10th, 2011
Throw some more steaks on the fire. There will be plenty of bones to share later.
9:47 pm on October 10th, 2011
Thank Dog, this had a happy ending. Franklin had disappeared, Gracie and Rose were crying, Patsy was licking faces and the rest were howling. Puppies are very important to All Packs!
9:48 pm on October 10th, 2011
Awwww Bella – sniff, snnnniffff – that was so lovely.
Melanie – the really big Wisdom Keeper with the moose antler, the Leather Dress Woman, a few feathers and other smaller Wisdom Keepers. Now – hand over one of them there bon bon thingies!
Barb and Maggie – you got it! Kind of a whining artist joke…
Siber – oooo – green chili stew! yippeee!!!
Youse guys are all great – we appreciate your thinking we are good enough for magazines, but …. yikes!!!! When we see some of the work in those magazines, we kind of feel like fifth graders in a college class. Maybe someday – we are still trying to grow and get better and better.
Hey MollyPop – back away from that kibble – Bee brought PIES!!!
9:49 pm on October 10th, 2011
The salmon bonbons are delish as always. Those are one of my and Alice’s favorites. You are right on the mark, Bear. I could use another steak and then some pie.
9:59 pm on October 10th, 2011
Liked the poem Rio, and so true!
Rebecca, Great story, and glad the ending was happy.
Welcome home Royals. At least you made your entry fees. Maybe the Plunderers have the right idea about putting your works in a high quality magazine, or doing an art show out west. Have you ever contacted some of the galleries out there? Your work is beautiful and you should have sold much more.
Can’t wait to hear more of the absurd comments.
10:00 pm on October 10th, 2011
Song!… Lets sing a song!….woooo!
Happy Golinka Day! Happy Golinka Day!
Happy Happy Happy Golinka Day!
Words!…I don’t know the rest of the words….sniff!
10:01 pm on October 10th, 2011
Glad you like the story. I wrote the story in the middle of the night; I couldn’t sleep. It isn’t ready, but I wanted to post something for Golinka Day. I’m signed up for another writing class this weekend—I can’t wait.
I realized what I left off my list: get the permission slip signed for Rio to leave his yard. If that didn’t work, plan B (no relation to Stover) was to have Belle Starr distract Rio’s friend so he could make his get away.
Royals’ Mum: You may not be as tall as AJ, but don’t sell yourself short. You are talented! I have to save up for a little thing called Iditarod, but once AJ wins you bet I’ll be first in line for my own piece of Golinka artwork—until then, please count me as a card carrying member of your fan club.
Melanie: Black eyes? There’s a story there…
Cheesecake anyone? I brought fruit topping for the sake of our thighs.
10:04 pm on October 10th, 2011
Coach has always loved puppies and they love him.
T&G: Coach, the father not the dog and Bev live in southern Utah near an artists’ village. Who said we’ve been planning your future while you’ve been away…
10:05 pm on October 10th, 2011
Siber-H: B’s pies do look delish don’t they. The crust is so perfect. Thank dog she was able to send them over. I believe I’ll have some of the chocolate cream. And, now how about a dish of your green chili stew.
10:11 pm on October 10th, 2011
Rio – we know the words to the song:
Hap-py Golinka Day
Happy Happy Golinka Day
When Friends gather round
Making smiles out of frowns
When steaks are grillin
And cheesecake is chillin
When silliness reigns
Removing all pains
You can make a sure bet
That all Friends of Chet
Are Honorary Golinkas
Today!

This food is great and Rebecca’s story so touching. But now Mom says we must all go back home. Bedtime is calling. Zzzzzzzzz
10:14 pm on October 10th, 2011
SnowBella: Cheese Cake? Well….maybe just a bite.
Tupper&Gilly: You tell your mum for us that her artwork is more than good enough to compete with the best of them! We think she should have her very own showing at a gallery. I’ll bet if she advertized in one of those art magazines she would see her sales sky rocket.
10:15 pm on October 10th, 2011
Oh snigglefritz, look at the time. T&G? Want the remarks from the rude idiots! I need to go to sleep!
10:16 pm on October 10th, 2011
Bella – methinks the Plunderers are a powerful lot when it comes to gathering together for the benefit of one of their own.
We seem to remember hearing about a small kennel of sled dogs in the outreaches of Alaska who now have a whole herd of supporters and cheerers and encouragers.
We have a feeling that Mama may be in for a bit of a ride herself. We call Shotgun!
10:18 pm on October 10th, 2011
Jeez Louise! Will you guys stop making me cry? Sniff, snuffle . . .
It’s allergies, I tell you! Allergies!
Oh, to celebrate Golinka day, YSAS has work tomorrow through Friday!!
It’s background for a film.
Give the Stories Mum!
10:21 pm on October 10th, 2011
Rio started the song and Tupper&Gilly sang it through to the end. What an evening! Good food, good friends and song. We can’t go wrong with a combination like that!
10:23 pm on October 10th, 2011
Wiping the cheesecake drool from Franklin’s jowls, “Um, sorry about that. He really didn’t mean to eat your plate, I mean off your plate.”
10:24 pm on October 10th, 2011
Ok the best of the rude remarks:
“Oh, I DO collect Indian art, but ONLY in the form of silver and turquoise jewelry – that is the only REAL Native artform”
(Really? But Indians didn’t make silver jewelry until they were enslaved and forced to by the Spaniards. They were however creating beautiful rugs and pottery and quillwork….)
“You couldn’t have made all the things in this booth. Its not possible! No one person could do all this! I’m going to complain to the producer!”
(said very loud by a customer who was told that I was the artist)
And my very favorite of the day, of the show, of the year.
“What??? You’re Indian??? Why do you want to tell anyone? You could easily pass for White.”
(exactly how does one respond to this one??)
Ok – goodnight Melanie
Come on Rio – sing it LOUD!
10:27 pm on October 10th, 2011
An honorary Golinka…wants a piece of the chocolate cream pie. B.Stover: your pie crusts are heavenly. My first attempt was good but not as good as yours. More practice is needed.
Yikes!
Melanie: What the….you got in a knock-down-drag-out fight with who…? Sheesh! I thought we were sending the dogs in to take care of things. Daddy always told me to put some blood suckers on those things and they won’t swell. Wouldn’t that look great for Halloween?
Ah! There’s our Golinka. Here’s to Golinka! She survived the weekend! You can’t keep her down!
10:32 pm on October 10th, 2011
Alice Johnson! What happened to you? Were you in the fight too? Oh no! Your tail, your usually beautiful tail is matted with burrs.
10:36 pm on October 10th, 2011
Ahhhh – Dawson? No turkey for us, thank you very much. We had plenty of them this weekend. And some of them weighed WAY more than 30 pounds!
10:37 pm on October 10th, 2011
Honorary… We’ve got a party going on over there!….Woooo!
HAPPY GOLINKA DAY! HAPPY GOLINKA DAY!
HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY GOLINKA DAY!….wheeze!
When Friends gather round
Making snorkels out of frowns
When steaks are grillin
And cheesecake is chillin
When wuffles reign
Removing all our pain
You can make a sure bet
That all Friends of Chet
Are Honorary Golinkas
TOOO-DAAAYY!…snort!

I hope everyone likes my t-shirt. It has a picture of a group of strong Indian men on the front with the caption, “Fighting Terrorism since 1492”.
10:40 pm on October 10th, 2011
Please (blush) do not mention the tail. but it was worth it because I had lots of fun in the side yard and under the porch. That Staff was beside herself and I wouldn’t come no matter how much food she shook at me.

Till I was good and ready!
Could you put some of that tuna on my cheesecake please?
10:42 pm on October 10th, 2011
Dawson!
What a great tee-shirt. I think I might need one of those. And bro Chris too. A chris-mas present maybe…..heh

10:46 pm on October 10th, 2011
Dog, I love you guys! Love the second verse Riö EXCELLENT!
Dawson, I was in a fight with a tree. Honest.
I CAN’T BELIEVE SOME FREAKING PEOPLE!
Golinka? More power to you for not losing your temper! Those people would not have stood! They would have been shriveled down to as small as their hearts!
You guys party on! Someone please send the Pack home when they get annoying. Patsy and I are headed to bed!
TTFN
HAPPY GOLINKA DAY!!
10:47 pm on October 10th, 2011
Hmmmm Looks like Rio took a tumble. He must be a little dizzy with all that twirling. He squashed Alice like a bug. I sure hope that he doesn’t get any of her burrs and stuff on his thin little coat. It might prickle him a bit.
10:49 pm on October 10th, 2011
Wow!
The rudeness of Golinka’s “customers” is mind boggling. I’d better have some more chocolate!
10:49 pm on October 10th, 2011
Barb’s mouth and jaw flew open and won’t close. She is dumb-struck over those comments and is speechless, which is very uncommon. People never cease to amaze us. That is why Barb likes dawgs (and Kats) way better. Nuff said.
Food was delish and company the best.
If Barb regains the power of speech, she is going to sing the Happy Golinka song!
Night all!
10:51 pm on October 10th, 2011
Arrgghhh…cough, cough, spit. My goodness who knew that Pug weighed that much! I feel flat as a pancake.
Sure glad I broke your fall Rio. You might have hurt something falling over like that. cough…
10:52 pm on October 10th, 2011
The only explanation I have for all those STUPID comments is that these people were flown in from another planet. They need to return to where they came from as soon as possible. We don’t want them here.
It was a lovely party. Alice and I will help with the clean up as soon as I take a nice nap.
How come Alice doesn’t get rushed off to the spa when she gets in a mess.
night all
10:55 pm on October 10th, 2011

10:58 pm on October 10th, 2011
Goodnight Melanie and Patsy. Thanks for the chocolate yum-yums.
Hey there’s Rio: Let me pat his flat head…Ouch! What the… Alice has been waving her tail in your face, hasn’t she.
10:59 pm on October 10th, 2011
How very sad. My last comment went of into cyber-space without even a hey. Grump. Now I can’t remember what I said so I am going to bed.
Great second verse Rio. Happy Golinka Day Everyone! Party on! I’ll just take a small doggie bag and be off – Bear
11:03 pm on October 10th, 2011
Goodnight Rio. Goodnight all you Honorary Golinkas. Happy Golinka Day!
11:08 pm on October 10th, 2011
night all
Alice, Abbie and Mr.Husky are going to clean up. We can’t leave this place in this condition. The Newfs will wash up and Siber and I will pick up. Alice has a great tail for dusting!
Alice leave Staff alone and get to work!
11:09 pm on October 10th, 2011
We really like Melanie’s explanation that the “customers” were actually Dementors in disguise.
The chocolate is helping a lot!
It is so nice to end the day with a laugh and a smile. We want you to know that one of the other artists saw Mama writing stuff down and asked about it. She told them that she was collecting memorable stupid comments rather than letting them get to her, and that she would be sharing them with her friends tonight. The other artist thought that was a great idea, and she also started making notes. She then told HER neighbor artist, who also thought it was a funny way to deal, and soon the idea was spreading around the big tent. During pack out – artists were comparing notes on “Stupid Things That Paradise City Customers Said”. And laughing. Lots of laughing. Which is better than complaining and whining.
See?!? PLUNDERERS RULE – Customers drool. Cuz they’re fools. And need to be schooled. And have their thoughts retooled.
Oh dear – we’ve fallen into a pun, and can’t get out!
11:16 pm on October 10th, 2011
I think the word cruel will fit in that pun. Some of those customers sound downright cruel.
goodnight now dear Royals. and Happy Golinka day (night)
Sage and Basil where strangely good tonight. Hope they get over it.
Whoo EEE Nicky Punto. Those Cardinals are cruisin’. 11 to 2
11:32 pm on October 10th, 2011
Hey Abbie –
We were banished from the party. Unfairly and unjustly accused of Corgi baiting.
We have a deal with Mama – we catch and kill the mousies in the house and turn them over in one piece to her and she gives us yummy kitty goodies in exchange.
Only Sage has been hoarding a few treats. When Mama got home from the show today, Sage had the treats in the way back of a big box, and he was teasing the Corgis – telling them how good the treats were. Sure enough, Silly Gilly was already in the box, Tupper was on her way, and Sage had the packing tape and label ready to go – where IS Patagonia anyway? Mama was not amused. And I, the innocent and purrfect Basil have been incarcerated with that reprobate Sage – far away from the salmon balls and grilled steaks.
Dam Sage.
He should have started packing WAY earlier.
11:38 pm on October 10th, 2011
Sorry that we didn’t make it to the Golinka Day party, but the Rangers needed our undivided support tonight.
First walk-off GRAND SLAM….in playoff history!!!!!We must rest up, as tomorrow is another day…of baseball!
11:40 pm on October 10th, 2011
Hello Friends! Amalia here. Thanking every one of you for the support and encouragement and laughter.
Rio – thanks for Golinka Day. I think my Poppop is getting a kick out of that wherever he is. Especially since it replaced That Italian Guy Who Got Lost, Found The Wrong Place And Did It All On Someone Else’s Money-Day
That was one GREAT party – snd the best way I know to end the day.
Goodnight to you all – and wishing you Chocolate Cream Pie Dreams!
11:42 pm on October 10th, 2011
Hey Macy – Happy for your Rangers. Did you actually get RAIN in Texas too??
Yaawwwnnn- – gotta go to sleep NOW! Goodnight for real this time.
12:19 am on October 11th, 2011
On my way home, one of my tires ended up flatter than Rio’s head. Luckily, a nice man who drove by twice stopped and helped me.
Happy Golinka Day and to all a Golinka night.

Dang, my blurring is rusty from neglect, and I was able to blur only as far as Chicago. I am embarrassed. I did order 22 pizzas for delivery and hope that they all made it intact.
Where is Oprah when I need her. Grumble.
