Happy Birthday, Zimmie!

“Can you believe he’s 70?” says Spence.

“The times they are a’changin’,” says Admin. “Better head over to BEA.”

“Bye.”

    Good Morning, All,
It’s been a too long since my last visit, not because we’ve lost interest, but because life has been in kind of a turmoil since our return from Florida. Since my dad retired for the 4th time and is working only a few days a week, all of his friends think that he has nothing to do, and they try to help out by keeping him busy. He has been filling in various ways for friends who for one reason or another can’t be where they are supposed to be. We enjoy doing it and have been meeting a lot of new people, but are guilty of not doing some of the things that we should do (clean the attic and cellar) and/or want to do (keep in touch with friends). We did make a short trip to Kentucky last week which was fun. We went to help friends celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. The celebrants are dog people; as a matter of fact they used to breed borzois and my dad got two from them about 45 years ago. He named the dogs Tasha and Czar. We aren’t party people but we like this couple more than we dislike parties. It was a long trip for a 3 hour open house. We had a good time though and are glad we made the trip.
I see that there is a cookbook being planned to help Snowhook and I’d like
to share a couple of recipes. How do I do that? Do I just post them here on the blog or
is there a better way of getting them to the editor of the book. For the other list I want
to report that I live northwest Pennsylvania about 4 miles from the New York state line and 26 miles from Mollypop’s ski country where we used to have a gallery and a frame shop.
By the way, Rio, I like your philosophy from yesterday.

    Dear Plunderers,

Before we were married, AJ held his large and calloused hands in front of me as he explained he didn’t have much to offer, but would give me everything that his hands could provide. He has lived up to this promise, and so it was without hesitation that I made my own promise a few years ago when he said he wanted to race the Iditarod. I promised I would do everything in my power to get the team to the starting line. I come to you today with my hat in my hand at the thought of a favor I must ask.

The cache of cash I’ve stored away for the entrance fee was quickly depleted by a transmission, our dog truck transmission to be specific. Reviewing our finances following the repairs of the dog truck and with June 25th, the first day to enter the race only one month away, I’ve come to the uncomfortable realization that it will be a battle of living expenses vs. entrance fee in the month of June—I can’t do both. As we understand it, mushers who are signed up (and paid in full) on June 25th will have their names put into a drawing where, if their name is pulled will essentially win their entrance fee — freeing up the funds for other race expenses.

I’ve been sick to my stomach trying to figure out how to make the entrance fee. I hate to ask—I’m embarrassed to ask especially after all that the support the Plunderers have shown: Would you be willing to move the silent auction to June 4th rather than July?

If so, a lot needs to happen between now and then. I’ve spoken with Rio’s friend who is drafting the auction rules and the formatting guidelines for item descriptions. Those submitting auction items would need to have final photos and descriptions sent in by June 2nd.

I know I am asking a lot, yet I made a promise to AJ. He hasn’t faltered on his promise and I don’t want to falter on mine. Can we make it happen?

    Humbly,
    Rebecca

I don’t know what to say…except I think it may have been YOUR birthday yesterday, Liz, yes? (the reference to morning birthday tea) If so – a Very Happy B-lated to you! And a happy 70th to you Zimmie! You always tell it like it is.

    Good Morning Fellow Plunderers!

Happy birthday, Liz, if it was your b-day and we didn’t know.

Good Grief! That last comment sounded like I don’t know what to say about what you said Rebecca. That’s not the case, as I was seemly first on the blog and was typing away when you and Kirby sneaked in on me. I say YES! If the auction can be moved up we are certainly willing to do our part. We are behind you, AJ and Snowhook 100%!

    Good morning all.

Rebecca: You should never feel humble. June 4 is fine with me.

Tyb: Could you give me a bit more for the list?

I’ve titled our list “Plunderers’ Who’s Who” and have posted it on dishlickers twice, the first time as an attachment which I could not open. So I posted it as an email. The problem with that is I couldn’t put double spaces between entries so it may be hard to read. If someone could tell me what I need to do to post it as an attachment please do so. (I’m afraid if I send it as an attachment to Spence, he won’t be able to open it.) I wrote it as a “Word Processor” document. Perhaps I should have made it a Microsoft Office Word document (I have Office 3 but not the most current one.) I could easily copy and paste if so.

If anyone wants changes to his/her entry let me know.

Auction!….Rebecca and AJ need our help….snort!… I’m up for it if everyone else is. This will mean all who have Auction Items need to get their photos to Melanie ASAP!! if you think she can enhance them for you. ….grunt!…. She will be sending them back to you after she finishes “fixing” them. Keep them safe. …sneeze!… Today or tonight at the latest, I will have the Official Description format everyone will use to Name and describe their auction item. We want them to be in a standard format so that potential bidders know where to look for the info they need. (i.e., size, starting Bid, minimum bid, color, etc)….wheeze!

Dates!… Is everyone is on board to help these guys reach their goal of entering the race by June 25th??…snort!snort!….If so here are the new Auction deadline dates.

This week : Send photos of your Item(s) to Melanie.

    May24th: Description format revealed….heh!

June 2: All enhanced photos with their descriptions need to be sent to Rebecca. If you have more than one item, please send each item in a separate email.

June 3: We will be doing some dry-run testing Friday night on Snowhook’s blog which you guys can watch if you want.

June 4th: Time To Be Determined. When Rebecca feels all is good with each item, she will post the Items on her blog along with the rules and regulations. Let the Bidding Begin!….woooooo!

    Fun!…It will be Loads of Fun!…snort!….Yes indeed!….wooooo!

Concern!… My only concern is if we let the auction run through June 12th, will Rebecca receive all the monies in time for the entry deadline?…sniff!…This is what I worry about.

Nice to hear from TYB, and we know he will have some auction items. Do you think anyone would be interested in bidding on heirloom tomato seeds? We gave thme away last fall, so feel funny about charging for them.

Just planted some basil and green beans. Having fun playing out in the garden and enjoying the sunny, quiet day.

Have to work this afternoon, but a friend is dropping by the office and bringing some home grown organic asparagus. She is also picking up the first 2 C & B books to read. She is a total dog person and an avid reader, so she will love them.

Is simply sending more donations right now a better option than trying to do the silent auction so quickly?

Rebecca, I know this is not what you asked, but I am throwing it out on the blog as another idea. I don’t know how much you need to raise right now for the entry fee, but I’m sure that the transmission for the dog truck was costly.

  17. Siber-H
    11:31 am on May 24th, 2011

Barb, I think the heirloom tomato seds would be a good auction item. The people you gave them away to last year will know that it is for a good cause this year.

  18. Siber-H
    11:46 am on May 24th, 2011

Rio said that he is concerned about Rebecca receiving the money in time…so am I. Another concern of mine is that the auction would bring in more money if it was allowed to go on longer.

Here is another idea (and these are only ideas for you to think about) What if those of us that could advanced Snowhook some money from the silent auction…I guess you could call it a loan to be paid back from the silent auction.

These are the options I can come up with so far.

Move the date of the silent auction up
    Donations
    Loan

    11:46 am on May 24th, 2011

Tyb: You should send recipes to Barb and Maggie. You can use the dishlickers site or Mollypop may have Barb’s email address. Any pictures should be sent to Melanie.

    11:56 am on May 24th, 2011

I will be available to help in any way I can and will be at Sam’s house this Thursday and Friday.

I agree with Siber-H that we may be rushing the auction and donations may be better. We could donate what we would have spent on the auction and then hold the auction in July.

    12:02 pm on May 24th, 2011

SiberH!… From what I’ve seen and heard, I think most everyone is ready for the Auction….snort!…Except for my friend. She still has to finish her project…grump!… She assures me she will do that this week…huffle!

Loans!… I know you are also worried about them missing the June 25th deadline SiberH….snort!….Remember, even if they miss this deadline, they will still have plenty of time to enter the race. They just will not be eligible for the drawing to win back the entry fee. Taking loans from some of you is something Rebecca and AJ would have to address….snuff!

Donations!… Of course everyone can still send in their individual checks plus bid on the auction…snort!….If you got the cash and want to do that, by all means GO FOR IT!….Wooooo! ….We here can only do so much, sadly….snuffle! …My treat fund has been depleted before the end of the month got here…grump!

Rio: Do you miss Justified? Great scene with Mags in the final show.

I am glad to see Rebecca on the blog & even A.J. I love to hear about the dogs & the Iditerod.
Rebecca, I am sure the blog will figure out something for you.

July!….The thing is, Rebecca will be on vacation down here in the lower 48 the week I had initially planned to do the auction. July 4th – July 12th….grunt!…. Her access to a computer was iffy…sniffy!

Ready!….Tell me now, who is not ready with their Item(s) besides my friend?….grunt! … Remember, we have all this week and next week to prepare for this….wheeze!

Reservations!….If there are those with strong reservations about holding the auction in June – please speak your mind….sniff! …But remember not all of us can send Snowhook a lot of cash and bid on the auction later. (Well, we can’t anyways)….snort!

  30. Riö - The Evil Pug

Length!…. Eight days should be plenty of time for everyone to bid on what they want. When I asked this question before, hardly anyone responded. So I am not ready to open it up for discussion again at this point in the game….growl!… Plus, those of us working behind the scenes to keep the bidding updated cannot (will not!) put our lives on hold for 2 weeks or more waiting on slow bidders.….grunt!

  31. Siber-H
    12:28 pm on May 24th, 2011

okay, well, that is what I said…I don’t really know how auctions work. I’m all for doing now if that is what we need to do.

  32. Riö - The Evil Pug
    12:29 pm on May 24th, 2011

SiberH!….If Rebecca thought she could come up with the money another way, do you think she would be asking us to hold the auction sooner??….snort!

Miracle!…If there are those out there that can come up with enough cash to cover the entrance fee before June 4th arrives, then we can post-pone the Silent Auction….gruff!…. All you rich guys get together and decide what you want to do, but it has to be before June 4th!….Woooo! That would be a blessed miracle!….Wooooo!

Tom, the guy on the machine, told me a rescue story today. His driveway alarm kept going off in the middle of the night, so he sat on his porch with a big flashlight and waited. The alarm went off! He was expecting a deer, raccoon or bear, but there was a very skinny gray cat with white paws and a white mustache and no tail.

He said the little guy didn’t weigh 7 pounds and you could see every rib. Tom and his wife enticed him with a bowl of milk. He drank 1/2 a quart. The cat went into the house and found Cinnamon, Tom’s 15 year old Chow, and curled right up and went to sleep.

Tom’s wife wanted to name him Mittens because of the white paws, but Tom put his foot down. This was a manly cat. He had lived in the woods. So he named him after his Uncle. Frank.

I saw Frank this morning. He is sleek and happy. Cinnamon has gone to the Rainbow Bridge (16!) and Tom and his wife have Frank to keep them company.

Siber-H: ARE YOU OKAY? A great deal of NM has red flag warnings. Not sure what those are, but OK is NOT doing okay.

  86. Siber-H
    7:24 pm on May 24th, 2011

I’m ok, thanks, Melanie. Red flags warnings mean that the fire danger is at the highest level. It means we have nasty wind today…gusts of 50 mph where I live and very low humidity. Sigh, we have had many days of red flag warnings this spring. I am not in any danger where I live of forest or grassland wildfires. I don’t even think that there are any wildland fires of a serious nature burning in the state right now.
The red flag warnings are to caution the humans to be very careful with any kind of fire on days like today.

Does anyone else have Dish Network? We have been unable to get Fox for the last 2 weeks, and they put up a message saying don’t call they are working on it. We like House and Chicago Code, so missed the last 2 weeks (including Season Finale) of both. Does anyone know what is going on, before we call and waste an hour waiting on the phone?

Good Evening to everybody. Mom was at the office all day, so this is the first time we were able to get on the computer. My my what a day we were missing. Rebecca had us heartbroken about her finances. We were worried that transmission was going to break her and A.J. So as we are thinking should we beg Mom to let us put still more money on our credit card, we read that an anonymous doner came up with all the registration money. That is unbelievable and indeed its a miracle. Thank you to whomever.

Mom is so busy keeping up with the farm and horses and cats and Pop while he is on crutches. Good thing we Sibes are able to help her out. But she says to apologize that when she is not working at home, she can’t let us on the computer.

B: sponsoring Charlie does seem like a good idea.

Siber, with all that dry heat, we are wondering if you ever grow a winter undercoat like we do. Mom just started brushing us and says we are way behind in blowing our coat. That made us think that you maybe don’t have to go thru that.

  97. Siber-H
    8:24 pm on May 24th, 2011

I do put on a winter coat, but I am sure it is not as thick as yours. I am blowing my coat now. There were a couple of huskies with Husky Rescue that blew their coats last Feb. and some are doing it now. My two best Husky friends at the dog park haven’t really started blowing their coats yet.
The hair comes out in gobs, doesn’t it. I wonder if the Newfs shed like that.

When its time to blow our coats, Mom sheds us under this big Maple tree every evening, and the birds clean up the fur, using it for their nests. But we think maybe we are too late this year for the birds to use in their nests. Our house is filled with Husky tumbleweeds during shedding time.

  100. Riö - The Evil Pug

Rebecca is, I think, 3 hours earlier than you and I are Rio. They are probably still at work and then they have to come home and do chores.

They birds are lucky to have such luxury as Husky hair. I’ve seen the birds picking it up in my yard.

  102. Melanie
    8:39 pm on May 24th, 2011

Once when Ellie was blowing her coat we decided to wash and then dry her to get a lot of the fur off.

    Snicker . . .

Well, we learned on that one! Our dryer is a llama dryer (two motors) and fur started flying! We quickly closed the door to the rest of the house. Fur was hanging in the air! It attached to the ceiling and the walls and the floor!

Now when blowing coats, The Pack is brushed out, then washed, then brushed and THEN the dryer is used.

When OTAS went away to school, Zoë took a whole mess of fur and mailed it to him. She didn’t want him to be lonesome.

    I’m off to bed. Long day . . .

But certainly blessed! Thanks again Amon!

Sitting in a seminar today, I thought I would sneak a peek at Chet’s blog—an addictive habit. Keeping my cell phone low to my lap, I scanned the rallying comments, the different options voiced, the words of support, and then I saw a special announcement from Rio. The words beyond the first few lines of Rio’s post were made illegible with the tears that began to flow. I started to shake. The tears were not those of embarrassment—I lost my pride long ago when I realized I had little coordination—the tears cried were those of overwhelming gratitude and relief. Sitting next to my dear friend in the meeting, I showed her the screen on my fancy work cell phone—her reaction was the same, but a muted version of mine.

In the middle of the large room with many people, I didn’t have the chance to read the entire blog and the email from the anonymous donor until I was I was in the parking lot following the seminar. I called AJ. Silence. He was as stunned as I was, as grateful as I was, and merely replied, “So, we’ll be able to run after all?”

I left work as soon as possible, desperate to say thank you, but while I usually find peace in the hour and half drive between work and home, the drive seemed far too long today.

Words cannot express my gratitude for not only the anonymous donor, but for each of you who rose to the occasion, who were willing to make my troubles your own. I can’t stop crying and my words of gratitude will never be enough.

Anonymous Donor: I owe you an email, yet I wanted to check in with all the Plunderers before many of them turned in for the night.

Rebecca, it usually doesn’t last that long, even if it seems to be a long time. Those clouds with super cells in them will just move on by within a reasonable length of time. All of this reminds mom of her childhood because she grew up in Tornado Alley.

Macy – we know how scary this is – hang on just a while more. Do NOT go out to see how big the hail is – it is bigger than you little one, and can cause real damage.
Your mom is one brave woman!

SiberH: Thanks for the info. My experience with tornadoes is limited and includes a rare warning where I grew up in Southeast Idaho. I remember insisting that I sleep with my hiking boots on, and tying the apron strings of my life-size Raggedy-Ann doll around my waist, certain that if I was going to go the way of Dot and Toto, I wasn’t going alone.

    Macy: please keep us posted.

Good Dog! What a day this has been! Who needs TV! We have some storm stories of our own, but that can wait for another day.

Rebecca: Your post made us all teary eyed too. We are all so happy to see you so happy!

Now that we know Macy, her mom, Annie & Belle are safe we can breathe a big sigh of relief.

Blast, a new storm is on us now, but no tornado. Yes, powder room, just for “powdering your nose”. Usually the tornado threat is brief, but tonight the systems just kept coming. We are exhausted, but happy to read the good snowhook news. Mom plays a game where she has a husky dog named Snowhook.

I’m with Bear, I am exhausted
We are very thankful that Macy and family and Ft. Worth are safe and that all the plunderers are accounted for, like Mollie(ABP).
We are very happy that all of us can breath a sigh of relief about Snowhook and they can continue on with their Iditarod Dreams.
I am thankful that they are getting my air conditioner (swamp cooler) up and running tomorrow. It is about time.

Dang, we have had it all.
Thank dog Macy and company are ok.
Thank dog we have a generous hearted Plunderer who is keeping all our dreams up and running.
Thank dog for friends – even if we never meet face to face, we are thankful on a daily basis for the friends we have made here.
Thank dog those blasted Wrotten Kats are staying off the blog tonight!

    Wow, what a day!

So much to be grateful for! First, for the annon Donor who has restored our faith in the goodness of life, and who has given all of us a chance to see a miracle. And has given us a chance to help some dreams come true. We have all been blessed.

Second, I am grateful that we are all safe, especially Macy!!

    Whew!
I was having trouble connecting and decided to write up the words for my auction items. Finally went down and rebooted the router. For about the 4th time today and it finally took. Then when I try to read the blog I hear about Macy down there in Fort Worth cozied up in the powder room.
What a scary time. I would not want to have only a powder room to hide in. It sounds very scary. I hope it is better now Macy and Mom. I have just checked the noaa.gov site and it shows the thunderstorms just moving past Fort Worth now.

Rebecca – this blog is truly a discovery every day. The serendipitous things that happen…..
So Siber got interested in the Iditarod
And by him talking about it, the rest of the Plunderers got interested.
And you have Whitey-Lance,a dog who is quite the character.
And Whitey-Lance decided to do a side trip during the race.
And the Plunderers got more involved.
Then there is the picture of AJ and W-L at the Arch.
And that is exactly the kind of thing all of us here love.
And a new friendship and connection was born.
How cool is this whole thing?
Your first blog entry this morning was so much from the heart and just spoke of the love you and AJ have for each other and for your dogs. Every single one of us wished we had the money to give you. We are sending blessings and thanks to Anon, and we are so very happy for you and AJ.
Good people deserve to get their dreams – especially when they work so hard for them.

    Dear Tupper and Gilly,
You are so right. I know both Dawson and I were wishing we had a spare 3000 around that we could donate. I too was thinking that Mr Husky is the one to blame for this. He got Rio interested along with the rest of us. And once Rio is interested you just sort of get out of the way. He is sure a force to be reckoned with. What a pair. Mr. Husky and the pugbutt. Makes me laugh to think of them hatching this up. I am sure Mr.Husky is as surprised as anyone.
    Hugs to you all!

Oh Bella, You are so right. Several of us have tried explaining this blog and our fellowship to others. Some are relatives and some just friends. It can’t be explained. It must be experienced.

When I had my kidney transplant last summer I had a caring bridge site and I had this blog. My brother (turtlemanFred) wanted to know how I was doing and was told by one of my sister’s that if he wanted to know the latest he had to check ChettheDog. To say that he was confused is mild. “You mean some DOG on the COMPUTER knows more than I do about my SISTER???”
    He was very indignant.
It makes me laugh to think about it but I can’t explain it either. It just is.

I totally understand why Macy talks to us during a terrifying tornado warning. Who else would she talk to but us? We are her friends.

Well Alice is sitting here purring really loudly so I know she wants her supper. Got to go. See you all tomorrow.

I keep lurking in hopes of one last post from Macy. Perhaps all is well and she is asleep, safe and sound.

Rebecca – how well do you know the movie “Mary Poppins”? There is a line in there that I just love that applies to your question about Plunderers vs non-Plunderers.
Mary Poppins is being scolded by her employer for the bizarre happenings in his household and demands an explanation.
Mary Poppins says “First off – I NEVER explain”, and she turns and leaves the room.
So, when a non-Plunderer looks at me with that little cock to their head that clearly says they think I am a little off kilter, I just explain that I never explain.
They are usually so befuddled, they give up.

  179. Alice Johnson

Tupper and Gilly, Something tells me you let Basil and Sage in on your little never explaining line. Heh heh heh.

  180. Snowhook Bella
    12:41 am on May 25th, 2011

I might have to steal said line…it could come in handy in several situations like when one brings home a stray and the husband starts to make useless inquiries as to the reasonableness of such actions.

  181. Basil and Sage
    12:44 am on May 25th, 2011

Hello Alice – you got that right. When Mama comes home and finds shredded kleenex, icky hair balls and stuff knocked off all tables and other flat surfaces, we give her a look to remind her that we NEVER explain, and then we stalk off, tails held high, and a sassy swing to our butts.
    Drives her crazy.

  182. Basil and Sage
    12:47 am on May 25th, 2011

In the world of husbands and wives – women should absolutely take a lesson from us Kats. Face it – the men are really just wasting their breath, so ….
(the swing as you walk away is very effective too)

  183. Snowhook Bella
    12:47 am on May 25th, 2011

Luna and her dog have that same sassy walk thing mastered…it is usually put into play after convincing another dog to engage in some tom-foolery and then they back away just as the other dog gets caught.

  184. Snowhook Bella
    12:50 am on May 25th, 2011

Basil and Sage: the best piece of marriage advice I received was: you can’t nag a man across the room, but you can sweet talk him around the world.

Seems to work given we’re in AK with 40+ dogs…my idea.

  185. Gus & BooBear
    12:58 am on May 25th, 2011

Well, we’re here for our usual very late post! You guys are right…what a roller coaster of a day! Macy, we are very grateful that you, your mom and your girls are okay. How scary that must have been for you. And as someone posted earlier, who else would you “call”? We are and always will be your friends.

It is hard to explain the connection we all have here at Chet the Dog. How can people one has never met in person become some of the best friends one has? We’re sure Chet must wonder sometimes what in the world he has started!

Thank you, Anonymous Donor!! Your gift to Snowhook is a Godsend for them!! We wish we were in the position to be able to make that kind of donation, but aren’t quite that lucky. Thank goodness for your very generous heart. And we still have the auction to help raise more money for them. Rio, we are ready for either June or July. (We actually thought it was going to be June). SiberH, a shorter auction (2 weeks or so) is usually better because interest doesn’t lag and people get right on with the bidding. We do need to send our pictures to Melanie to see if she thinks they can be spruced up a bit. Having trouble getting the one with the model to forward from the phone camera to the computer so we can send it. Rio, as soon as you give us the format for the item description, we will get that done and posted for editing by those with better writing skills than our Mom.

We also thought that the plunderers were trying to sponsor Orion as well as Whitey-Lance. Have we already raised that money? We sent in our 2nd donation a couple of weeks ago to help with that. Did we skip him to move to Charlie or did we miss something?

B., if it’s not too late, please add to our bio that Mom and Dad are very active in giving rescued cats a good home…ours!!

  186. Basil and Sage
    1:05 am on May 25th, 2011

Yup – thats a good one.
Did you know that is basically how Melanie’s mother and father came to their current home. Dan asked Zoe what would make her happy – Newfs in the countryside, she said – and then there they were.
(and we still say the swing in the walk away is very important!)

Ok – so now we need to call it a night. Wish Macy had stopped by, but hopefully all the storms have moved away from her.

We are going to bed to dream of bulldozers, and benefactors and blogging friends.

  189. Gus & BooBear
    1:18 am on May 25th, 2011

Herbs, looks like Ishmael is going to stick. Sometimes, Mom and Dad start with a name and it morphs into another shorter/longer nickname so we’ll see what happens. He’s quite the happy-go-lucky kitten. Not intimidated by the big cats and seems to love both the company of cats and people.

Mom still misses Toes, though, alot.

Unquestionably believe that which you stated.
Your favorite reason seemed to be on the net the
simplest factor to take note of. I say to you, I definitely get irked even as folks consider worries that they just do not understand about.
You managed to hit the nail upon the top as smartly as outlined
out the entire thing without having side-effects , other people can take a signal.

Will probably be back to get more. Thank you
