I read something that made me laugh: Is it the letter s or c that is silent in the word “scent”? Of course I had to check it out.

It is derived from Latin “sentire” meaning to feel, through Old French “sentir” meaning perceive or smell, to Middle English “sent,” which is the spelling Shakespeare used in Taming of the Shrew even though he is considered “modern” English. (Pronunciation changed after “The Great Vowel Shift” sometime in the 1400’s.) According to an online dictionary, the “c” in “scent” was added in the 17th Century for unknown reasons.

Is it any wonder that I love the English language….

Happy July 4th! We did the party last night at a friend’s house and get to relax and putter around the house today. Then back to work tomorrow.

Welcome Roscoe! So happy you were able to move in with Wolfie’s Mom and cheer Gus up. Sounds like a win/win to us.

Kat, I’m confused. Aren’t you and Rio Jr a couple? Why would you be on a date with another fellow? Just because Jr is having to work or the glacier this summer does not give you the excuse to look elsewhere. Just saying……

    Happy Independence Day!

BStover: So…it’s the “c” that is silent. Yes, I see why you love the English language and Ladyslippers are orchids.

Kat: Your mom disapproves of this “blind date” dude. He looks suspicious and so does that 2 legged who is with him.

If it stops raining I will go cut the scapes off my onions.

I earlier posted that the Canadian Postal employees were going on strike. They are still negotiating.

The Hobbit has landed! I bet Sadie, Mr. Big and a couple foster cats are very happy.

Roscoe: Not wanting to be on the big bed?—this does not compute. As far as being a good dog, well, when one is born alongside the Thieves and the likes of Wyatt, being good isn’t a priority.

BooBear: that is the same question of my heart. Maybe it is because of my missing eyebrows. Sniff.

  13. B.Stover
    2:13 pm on July 4th, 2016

Dawson: Except the “c” can also sound like “s”…as in “cent,” making the question even funnier. The “c” can also sound like “k” sometimes. “Knight,” for example, was derived from Old English “cniht” and the c was pronounced k. Of course, we have since dropped the k sound from knight….

    I’ll stop now.

BStover: Have I told you how much I love the book called “Albion’s Seed”? It is about how four geographical groups from the UK migrated to areas of the US and how one can see that from language, customs, and other characteristics. The book has led me to wonder and research about language and history.
Anyway, happy fourth, all. I have now used up all my available brain cells for today. My knee (nee) continues to progress nicely.

Martha: I know that Albion is the historical name for Great Britain. (We have a town by that name with a college using the name also.) Interesting. I’ll check out that book. And I’m laughing a “nee.” Hope you’re feeling well.

We love the things we learn on this here blog. Never knew about the Albion thing. Is that related in any way to the Avalon name? (we know, we should look it up ourselves, but it’s too hard to see the tiny stuff on the phone.

  17. B.Stover

Avalon is apparently from the Welsh for “apple.” Glastonbury was once called the Isle of Avalon and the monks there claimed to find the bones of Arthur. Geoffrey on Monmouth set his stories of Arthur and Merlin on the isle of “fruit trees” or isle of apples. There is an interesting article on Wikipedia about “Avalon.”

“Albion” may refer to the color white, as in the White Cliffs of Dover which may be the area that the ancient people saw from their boats. (At this point, I can’t remember where I read that. “Albino” may have a similar derivation.)

    Happy Birthday, America!

Hope that everyone is having an enjoyable and safe July 4th!

CHobbbitz: Be it ever so humble…Can’t wait to hear about your adventures!

Grizz and I went to the movies this afternoon. We saw a small picture called “Maggie’s Plan” with Ethan Hawke and Julianne Moore. It was okay…at least we got out of the heat for awhile.

My interest had been piqued so I tried to peek at the tall peak but I was piqued because of the fog.
Yeep! Let’s see if Rio can beat that…LOL

Rio Jr, I think Kat is expecting way too much from you (little prima donna!) After all, there you are, up on a glacier working to better yourself as a sled dog, and instead of supporting you, she is going on blind dates and ENJOYING the attention! Eyebrows or not, you deserve better!!! Perhaps a pretty kitty?

Hello Everyone–I hope your 4th was wonderful (no one hid under a bed or was frightened in any way by the noises, so we’re happy here).
A belated greeting to the handsome Roscoe (which I just typed as “Rosecoe”) and a delightful 5th (however you wish to interpret that) to all of you. The Republic still stands. (Although Edgar and Ms. Pretty are still recumbent).

OFA is missing in action? Not on the beach? Or in the salt mines?
Do we know someone who specializes in missing persons? I have more questions than answers.

    Staff – consider it done.

Mama says thanks! Gramp took her out for breakfast this morning. Eggs Benedict. Did we get any? No, we did not.
Tonight the Storyteller is taking her to a local clam shack for fried fish and onion rings. Then to the ice cream stand for their famous mascarpone ice cream with blueberries. Yum!

( then tomorrow, it’s back to her restricted foods)
